Rode the whole line today, a very peaceful and relaxing day was had. Surely not a high energy trip, so younger children may think it's a long ride. Lots of lovely scenery along the way.

It was an ordinary day when I was there and very quiet. Buying a full line return ticket enables you to get on and off the train at every station in both directions. Also you can visit their museum to make quite a nice full day all inclusive.

We loved it here! Great place for a family day out or train enthusiast. There's a cafe at the station and gift shop in an old train car. After looking around, we took a return trip down the line, pulled by a beautifully restored steam train. I CAN'T GIVE ENOUGH CREDIT TO ALL THE STAFF! Both at the station and aboard the trains. They turned a great day out into an amazing experience!

We had a superb dining experience (Sunday Lunch trip) on 07/05/23. The Station, steam locomotive and classic carriages are all beautifully maintained and run by very professional, super friendly staff. Our Sunday lunch was absolutely delicious. A special shout out to our carriage Steward Valen who made our trip extra enjoyable with his lovely personality and total professionalism. Gorgeous scenery along the route completed our unforgettable afternoon out.

The East Lancashire Railway is a heritage railway line in north-west England (with a steam engine), running between Heywood in Greater Manchester and Rawtenstall in Lancashire. It offers a range of unforgettable experiences such as dining with distinction. Food's good, staff very nice. Usually frequented by those interested in steam trains, so no late night raves going on. The railway is known for its effortless elegance, style and sophistication. It’s a popular choice for tourists as you get to see a bit of the northern countryside, while sitting back and eating nice food. The East Lancashire Railway is perfect for celebrating special occasions or treating yourself to a unique day out. Prices vary depending on which package you chose but it's good value for money generally. Must book beforehand on their website.

Working providing crafts for their bluey and bingo event, I met loads of families having a great day out. Train rides, animals, rides, facepainting and crafts as well as everything in the museum. Not forgetting meeting the stars of the event for a photo. "something for everyone" as one mum put it. A really interesting place with plenty to see and do, (besides the event activities)-transport geek heaven, well worth a visit. Dress up warm in winter.

Spent a sppomy halloween here with the little one, who loved it. Nice atmosphere going over the bridged and I was surprised the daughter wasn't freaking out because some of the scary clowns were bloody terrifying. The platform was full of characters and we had plenty of food and drink available. The train ride part of the experience was a bit of a let down for myself, but again, the kids seemed to really enjoy it and the train was nice and warm. Plenty of paid parking across the road and along the side of the station.

My partner and I visited the East Lancs Railway for the steam train experience and we were not disappointed. It is an amazing trip on an even more amazing steam train. We sat in the carriage nearest the engine for the first half of the trip and it was wonderful to hear and feel the pulse of the engine going full steam. Fabulous time sitting in the lovely old carriages wobbling along the track. Will be returning in the near future.

A window into the past! Walking into the station from the street you will immediately recognise where to purchase your ticket. There are several options depending on how far along the line you want to go, and whether you want access to the museum. Due to the whole thing being run by volunteers it is worth noting that there may be reduced service on the line, or the museum not open when it should. Walking down the steps into the platform put a smile on my face. It's like walking into a film set. The smells are different as well as the look of it, and there's plenty to see whilst waiting for your departure. Walk up and down the platform and you can see the works depot, signals, trackside signage, platform staff. Great fun!

We visited yesterday 26/11 forone of their Santa Specials journeys. When we booked we thought it was somewhat expensive (3 adults and one under 3) however, after visiting, I can 110% say that it was worth every penny. The event was well organised from start to finish and all the staff were extremely helpful. The beginning winter wonderland was wonderful - all characters stopped to interact with my six month old and there were plenty of photo opportunities. Whilst on the station there was a small cafe and a few stalls for a drink / snack and before boarding we were handed an adult goody bag (children goody bags were distributed on the train) There were carol sheets on board and a brass band. We had a visit from Santa and his elf (and we learnt how to say thank you Santa in makaton) A huge thanks to our steward in carriage B @ 15:20 (his vest said steward 22) he went above and beyond to ensure all of us in our carriage had a magical experience and gave us a helping hand at the end when we were leaving the train. Thank you so much for a wonderful experience for my daughter's first Christmas. I can get with to visit again next Christmas and potentially attend any other future events with yourselves.

I had the most incredible time at the music event held on the station platform of the steam railway. The unique setting added a nostalgic charm to the experience, with the steam trains chugging in the background. The friendly staff made the event even more enjoyable, ensuring everyone had a great time. The well-priced bar was a pleasant surprise, offering a variety of drinks to suit everyone's taste. The combination of live music, vintage ambiance, and attentive staff created a truly unforgettable afternoon that I can't wait to experience again.

This is such a brilliant place to visit. The experience of the steam train is great. The events that are put on are excellent. I have been to many of the events and the dinning with distinction meals which are a real must try. The cost of the train is nothing over the top.

Amazing railway with some amazing diesel locomotives! Great place for the family and has great spots where trains are and people aren't for photography. Fantastic time. If like my family you were going to visit the Bury Transport Museum ring in advance to see if its open as we found it to be closed.

We were staying at Burrs Country Park on the Caravan and Motorhome site. We managed two days on the railway made extra special as we had two for one tickets. This is a lovely railway with picturesque views both ways with the added bonus of being able to get off and on at various stations. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We stopped in Bury twice to visit the brilliant market which was the icing on the cake so to speak. It is a heritage railway and it was very nostalgic riding along on steam trains again. We would highly recommend this day out to everyone as it takes you away from the daily rush of life. Well done East Lancs Railway we will be back in the autumn. Thank You.

Absolutely amazing Christmas experience for children and adults alike. It was a seemless experience very slick, covid safe. Staff were amazing, so helpful and friendly. The Train experience cost £25 per ticket and I'd say well worth it. Santa visit on the train and a decent present for the kids. At the start they are given age appropriate badges which colour coordinates to the gifts they get being age suitable. Sing songs, music playing, funny elves, magician elves. Adults got a little Christmas tipple and mince pie, kids got a fruit shoot drink and a bag of chocolate coins. Children provided with a colouring book and colours by the elves. Facilities well stocked and clean. Shop, cafe, parking all available. Will definitely be going back ❤️

Great day out. The food was lovely, good portions of wholesome really nice food. We had Sunday dinner and it was the best beef I've had in a long time. Parking at the station is £1 all day, if you can't find a space there is another car park opposite and another round the corner. Also pay and display. Arrive early and get some pictures. You can take drinks on board at a corkage of about £8 check the website. Super friendly staff. Very happy with our day out.

We went to bury Bolton station for a steam train experience. From the first impression, it was clearly a near perfect representation of the old rail system. The station was set to look and feel the old days, the bags the weighing machines, trolleys.. signs. And noticed all the staff were senior citizens, who were very cheerful, caring and helpful. Felt they were enjoying serving the visitors every moment. Steam train experience was also very good. Real smell of the steam and smoke (we left the window open), the sound, the interiors, everything took me back to my childhood. I would recommend this place for those who likes it. Parking at the station may be tough on a mind day, but either transport museum parking or there is another council parking very close by. It is mentioned in their website or use Parkopedia/google. Enjoy the day 👍

Great day out for everyone. Kids to great grannies. Railway is well run and its great to see these huge steam locos working rather than rusting in a museum. Friendly staff. Food / drink/ beer all available. Buying a ticket really helps preserve the steam experience for future generations.

We stopped in at the Trackside Bar for a couple of hours. Drinks were a little expensive, but it's a free house, and most of the beers looked like they were from local breweries. While we were there a train was being chartered, and another train was moving some stock. There are timetables showing the heritage rail services for the year, including a guide to events.

Brilliant afternoon spent onboard the Flying Scotsman, absolutely awesome with added bonus of seeing the Union of South Africa on its final journey before being retired to Scotland, back to it's private owner. Great atmosphere, lots of people. Station staff friendly, polite, and extremely knowledgeable. Highly recommended. Also nice to see some young people involved in organising/steward work, everyone catered for. Worth more than 5star rating👮👩‍✈️🚂🚞🚃

Fantastic railway heritage recreated along this restored railway. Main stations, Bury Bolton St, Ramsbottom & Rawtenstall beautifully restored and preserved. The other, smaller stations, also preserved to give perfect sense of history. Food and drink available at the main stations including 2 brilliant real ale pubs at Bury & Rawtenstall, both selling various local cask ales. Mostly run by volunteers, this Fantastic preserved railway has an amazing wide-range of locomotives and coaches. Superb visit for adults & children alike

One of the best heritage railways in the country, with an impressive fleet of heritage diesels and guest locos, both steam & diesel. Have seen all the best known and famous locos operating on this line, which is unique in that it travels both through urban towns and rural countryside between Heywood & Rawtenstall. Special events throughout the year and superb diesel galas, luxury dining trains, Santa Specials, Halloween train etc. Highly recommended to visit!

  • 5/5 Abz S. 1 year ago on Google
We went for the Flying Scotsman centenary. For the amount of people that were there the station and carriages were amazing and in a good clean condition. The staff were very friendly and very helpful. The facilities on the platform were clean too. The cafe on the platform was also well stocked. Will definitely be visiting again.

Had a lovely day on and off the steam train from one end of the line to the other. Had lunch in Ramsbottom, drinks at trackside bar in Bury, then back to Burrs Country Park where we were staying in the caravan.

  • 5/5 Benji B. 1 year ago on Google
Had an absolute blast! The experience was great, especially with the one and only Flying Scotsman hauling our train! The transport museum was filled with transport history, including 60009 Union of South Africa. An overall great day trip which I'd definitely recommend to any transport enthusiasts alike.

  • 5/5 Paul E. 9 months ago on Google
This is one of the larger heritage railways in the country. Made a quick visit to see some of the smaller engines at the gala, and looking forward to visiting for one of the full diesel galas later in the year.

Booked the dining with distinction on 10th September for a 4 course meal behind a steam train for a special birthday . Could not fault the staff, all friendly and polite however there were a few issues. The welcome on board drink was a glass of fizz which had obviously been poured for some time being warm, you could see it on the table through the carriage window. It was also very sweet to the point of being sickly and was cheap. For the price of the tickets it should be cold and of a decent quality. The meal was fine with the exception of the soup that was thin and just about warm enough to eat not in any way hot.

  • 5/5 Jeevaka W. 11 months ago on Google
For a train nerd like myself and my wife this will be heaven for you. We were there for the centenary of the Flying Scotsman but there are a lot more options of things to do if you just love the idea of trains like us. There are regular train rides, dining rides and most importantly take your dog days. Have a look at their calendar for Thomas days for the kids. Best option is to get there early get on a train and ride them through the days getting off at each stations.

  • 5/5 Simon J. 1 year ago on Google
What a great day going back in time to your childhood memories of the old trains. Really nice just sitting back and watching the countryside go by. The trackside pub was buzzing with activity waiting for the luxury orient style train to leave. The Classic car gathering along the route was a nice extra to enjoy as well.

  • 5/5 Steven L. 2 years ago on Google
Great day was had! Can highly recommend to anyone. We had a steam train which was pleasing as I was worried that we would get a diesel. There was entertainment on board and of course the visit from Father Christmas which my little boy obviously loved. All set against a relaxing train ride through the Lancashire countryside. £25 each

  • 5/5 Nigelj V. 1 year ago on Google
Great atmosphere of times gone by. Superbly restored carriages and the sounds sounds, sight and smell of the magic of steam or perhaps a heritage diesel unit lovingly restored. Beautiful stations such as Ramsbottom as seen with the diesel unit

A great day out watching the Steam Trains running up and down the lines. All the volunteers are very passionate about the railway and are so interesting to talk to. Had a great time talking to Alan about all the work being done. There is also a great bar with superb ales on tap.

We had a lovely day using a day rover ticket for the East Lancashire Railway. Very friendly and informative staff welcomed you to the station. Lovely towns to explore on route and a great variety of trains. Our party aged from 3 to 70 all enjoyed the day.

Fantastic place. If you're in to heritage steam and/or diesel, it's the place to be ! Nice pubs, scenic railways and nice little cafes. The only problem is, parking. The car park isn't massive. I'd suggest getting there early, or get the train to Bury tram Station.

  • 5/5 Phillip J. 1 year ago on Google
Just a great place to visit. Plenty of things going on all year around I would Highly recommend the murder mystery evenings and the dining experience as well. Also if you just want a drink and a bite to eat the track side bar is excellent with a wide range of guest ales and good food with a view of the steam trains whisping by what a way to spend a few hours of your time. I would definitely recommend a visit

A little tip. If you plan to ride the whole route, start at either end. There's little to keep you long in either Heywood or Rawtenstall, but Bury has a lot to offer, not least the choice of ales in the Trackside bar.

Easy Lancashire Railway is definitely the place to go of you like stream locomotives and trains. The staff all dress in their uniform and look the part. They are very helpful and polite. Any member of staff is a fountain of knowledge about old stream locomotives. From time to time the Flying Scotsman stops for a visit. Have a trip on one of the trains through the beautiful countryside. You can have a meal and a glass of wine on the Dinning With Distinction train.

Great day out. Combine with lunch at a pub at one of the stops (e.g. hearth of the ram at Ramsbottom) for a good day out. Steam engines impress small children who will not have seen or heard one in reality. Staff are really friendly and helpful too.
