You can buy the ticket at the entrance, dont’t need to make reservation in advance. Heard that it’s one of three most beautiful garden in Japan, I went here on end of March. It’s nice that I can see a lot of plum flowers.

I've been here many times for the plum festival. This is a wonderful plum garden. Many of the plum trees are old, and their branches are so beautiful that they become picturesque. In recent years, due to global warming, the flowers are in full bloom from the end of February to the beginning of March, and are no longer around the vernal equinox. You can also enter Kobun-tei, the villa of Tokugawa Nariaki (extra charge). During the plum festival, there are stalls selling Mito specialties such as plum sweets, alcohol, and natto, as well as stalls selling boxed lunches and ekiben. A permanent store is located next to the main gate. If you have an admission ticket, you can come and go as many times as you like on the day, so you can easily visit the stalls, souvenir shops, and restaurants in front of the main gate.

Plum blossoms are not full on (10%) as of Feb 3rd, but it was nice day to walk around the park.

Visited Kairakuen Plum Festival at daytime and TeamLab Kairakuen Light Festival 2022 at night. It was cold in mid-March. Many kinds of plum blossoms were in bloom and they were beautiful. I was surprised to see many plums that look like cherry blossoms. To be honest, I was disappointed by TeamLab at night. I felt it was a normal night light up and don’t think there was much of TeamLab uniqueness.

Went on 5 March 2022 to see the teamLab exhibition but it was rather disappointing. Plum flowers were not in full bloom either (mostly buds).

Picturesque garden grounds, well maintained and varied areas. Small traditional house, natural spring rock, plenty of plum trees, and a luscious bamboo forest.

One of the top three gardens in Japan. The best parts are the bamboo grove, the historical home, and the plum blossoms. It's definitely worth visiting if you are in the area, but overall I prefer the other two famous gardens (Kenrokuen in Kanazawa, and Korakuen in Okayama)

Very lovely and well-kept garden. The grandpa who is working at the 3rd floor of Kobuntei was super kind and welcoming. He tried his best to assist us to the third floor and showed the view from it. I feel very grateful. I would love to come back again. Less people going in the garden even when it is Saturday, we came yesterday.

Weekend Getaway in Mito . Although there are many parks in Tokyo , this park was more serene and less crowded compared to others. The park is an amazing place to spend quality family time . Kids have fun, feeding the ducks and the pegions. Sometimes people do street performances here. There is provision for walking around the whole lake , and the breeze from the lake is gentle and nice. You will find many school children on a picnic at this place. Even Mito tower is visible from here, and decent cafes around this place.

Wonderful area to escape the frenetic pace of Tokyo. A great assortment of wide-open spaces, and small winding trails. Some elegant historical buildings and structures, and excellent views of the nearby lake. Convenient access along the provided paths, some of which are gravel. Even has a temporary train station located adjacent to the entrance, which is activated for special occasions.

It was a lovely park. 1-2 hours are kind of a rush through walk. Would recommend 3 hours and more. There are tea houses and panoramic areas. There is a restaurant inside and a gift shop too. Ume (plum) gift selection is not as many as I thought it would be. Lots of stalls selling food during ume festival. There are restaurants outside too.

The timing of the plum blossoms was a little off, but I was completely satisfied. I was surprised that a garden of this size was open to the public even back then.

Winter visiting less impressive than in full bloom during spring and summer but still beautiful and tranquil. Winter also sees less crowds a chance to enjoy in a Covid safe way.

A major historical and cultural landmark in Mito. A must see during the plum flowers season. There are different parking areas close to the park. Access is not difficult, price is 500 yens. Try to come before 9:00 because it's really crowded during the hanami season.

Kairakuen is one of Japan's three famous gardens. (The others are Kenrokuen in Ishikawa and Korakuen in Okayama) It was created in 1842 by Nariaki Tokugawa, the 9th lord of the Mito domain. Plum trees are said to have been planted because their beautiful flowers bloom and are used as material for poetry, and their fruit can be used as preserved food during battles and has excellent medicinal properties. Admission fee is 300 yen for adults, 150 yen for children. There are about 3,000 plum trees planted in the park, and I think you can see them all in about an hour. It might be best to visit when the plum trees are in full bloom.

I read on the internet that plum blossoms are in full bloom, so I brought my mother there. During the winter, the plants were all brown, but I was able to see some colored plants for the first time in a while, and I felt that spring was getting closer. I stayed for about 2 hours and returned to Tokyo, but I felt refreshed for the first time in a while. ☺️

I visited on March 10th during the Plum Festival. The early-blooming plums had dispersed, but the late-blooming plums still had buds, and the vast plum grove in full bloom was a sight to behold. However, there were many visitors and it was crowded.

It should be absolutely gorgeous during Sakura bloom time. We visited in November, it was interesting - bamboo forest, ivaki cut of pine trees etc. but I would expect more from "one of three greatest Japanese gardens". There is a traditional Japanese house in the garden (additional fee) with great view and interior paintings. Worth to visit. You can also get a coffee with sweets there. I was impressed with presentation of Tiramisu cake.

I love Kairskuen garden. It was my third visit. Today in the 1st of December it was very calm and I loved strolling through the park and have a coffee in the coffee shop. I have been here before during the plum blossom season, which is if course the absolutely highlight. But then the park is very crowded.

Very beautiful garden with gorgeous cedar trees and bamboo. As I visited in Nov, it isn’t the season for the plum garden, thus it was barren and sad. There was also pond washing on that day I went. Thus it was disappointing.

  • 5/5 Etan 4 months ago on Google • 14 reviews
Very beautiful garden. The bamboo and pine forest area were very peaceful, and beautiful. Being able to go inside and up to the 3rd floor of such a wonderful old style Japanese building was amazing. And it being up on a hill gave it such great views. Sadly I missed the peak autumn colours. But the amount of plum blossom trees there would be amazing in bloom or with autumn colour. If you walk from mito station you can go around the wonderful lake nearby as well for more beautiful scenery.

One of the top 3 gardens of Japan. I would say only when the plum (Ume) blossom is in flower early mid Feb to mid March depending on the weather. There is also a small bamboo forest and cedar garden. Well maintained.

Visiting here was a milestone, having now seen ‘The Three Great Gardens of Japan’. Admittedly, my favourite has been Kōraku-en in Okayama but Kairaku-en is definitely worth a visit. The ‘main garden’ was a bit tricky to navigate to as this marker for ‘Kairaku-en’ encompasses the area as a whole. If parking near the river set a marker at ‘偕楽園 表門’ instead which is one of the main entry gates. I enjoyed the elevated layout of the park, which includes a bamboo forest, an extensive plum tree area (although I was too late for these), a collection of Sakura trees and of course Kobuntei House (extra fee, but worth it!).

This is one of the top three parks in all of Japan. It is is rich in history and is extremely lively during the plum blossom festival held in early spring. During the festival there are many events including tea ceremonies, live music, plum wine tasting, stalls selling grilled chicken, squid and more, illuminations in the evening of the plum trees and bamboo forest and even a short display of fireworks one of the evenings. While early March is best for the plum blossom festival, it is a nice spot to go for a walk in every season.
