Used to love this museum as a kid and now uts even better. Could spend the whole day here learning about different cultures and far away nations. If you don't have the chance to travel but still want to learn about the world and its people come visit this museum. And I have to make a special mention of the big screens with the most beautiful photos projected on them, I almost felt guilty for not just sitting down and watch the whole sideshow.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. It's a wonderful museum to visit. I was here during the Aztec exposition which was a sheer delight. They have WiFi which is quite helpful if you're a tourist. There's a cloakroom with lockers where you leave your handbags and are provided tokens to lock them in. There's a lovely play place for the kids and a small cafe. Quite centrally located and right opposite the bus and train stations and central Rotterdam.

This museum of ethnology, located within walking distance from the Leiden central station, is so breathtaking that one finds it rather difficult to choose where to start! My advice is: take your time and walk through all the exhibits....and read the fascinating stories behind them. Come to Leiden and visit this magnificent museum! Highly recommended.

What a wonderful museum! We spend quite a few hours in the different rooms that bring you all around the world with items from every continent. I really enjoyed my stay there and found it absolutely not to be missed on my list. The staff at the entrance was also very kind and welcoming when explaining the different areas. If you are visiting Leiden I wholeheartedly recommend it!

While visiting Leiden and if one has an interest in ethnology, this is a very good museum to bring both yourselves and your children. Introduce them to cultures from all over the world.

I absolutely love this place. It has so many interesting pieces from different cultures. There are also two areas for the kids to learn and play. The cafe offers delicious pastries. Definitely a must see if visiting Leiden.

One of, if not the best museum I have visited. It’s modest in size but thanks to its perfect layout you will never notice. We actually had to leave (after 3-3.5hours) due to their closing time without making it through all the rooms. In a few days we’ll definitely finish our tour! Comprehensive floorplan, clear room divisions with each one containing a specific country or general area of the world, wide pathways, EXCELLENT (exhibition)pieces with informative written explanation that’s not too long and actually interesting. Lots of museums often fumble the ball on this aspect of the museum-experience somehow… Some objects seem to be ‘missing’ - these empty spaces used to display artifacts obtained through colonial wars and oppression. The museum gave them back to the rightful owners and use (a few) vacant places to emphasize the importance of returning artifacts to their home countries and peoples. LOTS of fun for kids as well with a numerous interactive ‘lessons’ on different animals, parts of the world and peoples. The educational activities and games are actually really fun to do - even for “older children” (29yo)

Excellent museum with collections from all around the world. The kid section could be improve or even integrate a more dynamic sections for them. Nonetheless, it is a very nice museum and a ‘must see’ if you go to Leiden.

(Translated by Google) You left this museum with a mixed feeling. Very nice exhibitions, but many pieces stated that they were stolen during the colonization. Images in which it is written that it was important / sacred to the people because it represented ancestors, for example ... And yet they are here. In addition, at the first nations exhibition very nicely described with, for example, the headdresses and Maori tattoos that these were seen as something spiritual / sacred, but a screen where you could put yourself in the picture for fun with a headdress on as a funny 'costume '. Or, for example, information about the fact that we called the Native Americans Indians, but that they absolutely do not want to use this name themselves, but use the word 'Indians' repeatedly in the exhibition. An incredibly beautiful, educational museum, but could all have been done with much more respect for the populations.

I spent >4 hours here and still missed a wing (the native American wing of all things...I wanted to see some Tlingit art). If you're as into Asian art as I am, you could easily spend a whole day here. Very impressive collection for a very reasonable price (at least compared to some of the art museums I visited or attempted to visit in Amsterdam a day or two prior). The Indonesian collection is especially extensive (though perhaps that shouldn't be surprising given their history with the Dutch). The quality and quantity of works from Southeast Asia made me realize my history knowledge is severely lacking in that part of the world. One word of caution: if the signage makes you think you're going to see Japanese woodblock prints, well, no, they have almost none of those. Most of their Japanese collection is comprised of daily use items like netsuke, woven bamboo works, inlaid furniture, etc. IMHO, the Korean section of the room was more informative despite occupying less space, but that might've been because I already knew quite a bit about Japan. Still worth seeing.

(Translated by Google) I've been here with my class. I think the exhibitions are beautiful, but less interactive for children than I expected. The tour was given by someone who did not seem to be in the mood, he could not deal with the enthusiasm of my students. The new exhibition about Oceania is beautiful, but the showpiece, a Maori work of art made from waste plastic, is largely made from new plastic. Something that I (and my students) really thought was a shame.

It is an ethnographic museum in the Netherlands located in the university city of Leiden. As of 2014, the museum, along with the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Africa Museum in Berg en Dal, together make up the National Museum of World Cultures. This isn't the best museum I have ever seen. The repertory isn't very big. But most temporary exhibition are interesting.

  • 2/5 Pablo P. 4 years ago on Google
The museum looks nice but the exhibitions are of the old lady posh shopping mall style. Exhibits are thrown together without a sense of history. The Moche culture, for example, comes 1000 years before the Incas but you would think that they're contemporary as they're shown together without any explanation in one single glass box.

(Translated by Google) A very interesting and beautifully set up museum. You will get to know just about all non-western peoples in the world in a nutshell. You can clearly see the parallels between the different cultures. The temporary exhibition on the culture of the Pacific Islands is very nice. Certainly the film that passes you by in a special way as a kind of moving parchment scroll. The only thing that was less pleasant was that there were not descriptions everywhere or that they hung on the other side of the room. Find it more pleasant if they stand / hang next to the object itself.

Well worth visiting. Not only is it interesting from an ethnological point of view, but many of the objects are also outstanding art objects. It´s all well presented, although some objects might be too dimly lit (I understand they need to be protected from light, but details were sometimes hard to see in the dark, behind reflective glass). The staff was friendly and nice to talk to. For me the size of the place was just perfect.

Managed to visit the museum just before the lockdown. It is located just near the Leiden central, 7 minutes walk from the station. Across the museum is the windmill, a beautiful touristic spot to take a picture at. The museum has 2 floors of a wide range of exhibits. I needed one and a half hour to explore the first floor. Decided to save the second floor’s exhibits for the next visit. Staffs in the reception were friendly, showing us which part to visit first. There’s a locker and hanger to save our coats and belongings which I find very important every time I go to a museum. Overall, great museum!

Museum full of probably stolen art from counties colonized by the Netherlands in the past with little to none background information about it, a lot in English as well but also some things in Dutch only. The day I was there it was nicely and respectful silent in the Indonesia area when suddenly a guy started playing a trompet really loud and for a long time, really didn’t feel appropriate in the setting and atmosphere. I hope there will adjust in different ways, comes over pretty lazy.

(Translated by Google) Recently been to the Oceania exhibition. Beautiful pieces and beautifully displayed, but the disclosure was very clumsy and illogically placed. In each room the plates were not placed next to the pieces, but were displayed together in a corner in small letters. Because of this, you have to walk back and forth for the information that goes with each piece and get close to it to read it. Very clumsy and not corona proof.

Went to this Museum with my wife and loved it. Very nice special exhibition on Aztecs, and the regular exhibition on various cultures around the world was so nicely done and explained. Bravo! Afterwards took a stroll through the old centre of Leiden. Parking at walking distance very convenient.

This is a great museum! Great variety of history about numerous religions. Loads of items and information from Australia, Korea, China, Indonesia, America and other African/Asian countries. 10/10 will go again.

😍😍😍 wow this place is great!!! So much to do and see, I don't even know where to start. So many different cultures, so many artifacts. It was displayed in a perfectly classy way. They really did justice to those that owned the items so long ago. Can't wait for the next visit.

Beautifully renovated museum. We had a great time. Kids friendly activities. Due to Covid online reservations needed. Not crowded. You will have seen most of the museum in 2,5 - 3 hours.

Excellent stuff. A good lot of artefacts that tell a story and really mean something. The Aztec exhibition was sensitive and broad. Cafe was good for lunch--spacious and the food was nice. Good for children. Played chess on the way in and out, too.

A must for all who want to learn more about the history of the world. We as 'Western World' are far from being the first civalitation. There is a lot to be learned from the art of lost civalitations. Not only history, but also for creating new art.

Very interesting museum, a sort of smaller version of the British Museum ;) the Aztec exposition currently showed is beautiful. The park around the museum is also nice for a stroll, the museum is very central and just across the canal is a big parking lot

I'd been here a (very) long time ago and didn't like it (as a child). However, this is actually quite a nice museum. You can easily spend a few hours here. There are screens that provide more information on the artifacts. Within the rooms it is sometimes a bit hard to navigate in the sense of finding a good route.

I love this place. You can feel the whole world here. They have artefacts from different parts of the world. You would love it.

It is good place to visit if you are interested in cultures of different parts of our planet. It is also a good place for children because you can find there not only expositions but some entertainment. Children can get some information about animals and have fun. Recommend to visit!

I had wanted to visit this museum for a long time and accordingly had high expectations. The special exhibition about maps was an additional incentive. The experience on site was then unfortunately sobering. Yes, the permanent exhibition consists of extraordinarily impressive objects, most of which are also very well presented. But even here, there were problems with poorly contrasted lettering or unhappily placed explanations that I would not expect in a very well curated museum. The special exhibition on maps is in principle very good, but spread over two non-contiguous rooms and unfortunately disappointingly small. The particular misfortune of my visit, however, was that a Djoser marketing event was taking place at the same time, turning the entire museum into a fairground. Really all areas of the museum had promotional videos of the travel company, one huge area was virtually a travel agency, and the noise of the events permeated the entire building. Probably this gave the museum a nice big donation check - we still had to pay admission - not too shabby at 15 euros. We expected excellence and what we got was a fair.

Ethno Museum in Leiden User Write a 250 word review for the ethnographic museum in leiden ChatGPT Review: Ethnographic Museum in Leiden The Ethnographic Museum in Leiden is a treasure trove of cultural exploration, offering visitors a captivating journey into the diverse tapestry of human civilizations. With its impressive collection and immersive exhibits, this museum stands out as a must-visit destination for anyone with an interest in anthropology and world cultures. Upon entering the museum, I was immediately struck by the vastness of the collection. Spanning continents and centuries, the exhibits are thoughtfully curated to showcase the rich traditions, customs, and artifacts of various indigenous peoples. The attention to detail and the level of research that has gone into each display is truly commendable. The museum succeeds in creating an immersive experience for visitors, transporting them to different corners of the world. From ancient Mayan artifacts to intricate African masks, each exhibit tells a story and offers insight into the unique cultural practices and beliefs of different societies. The interactive elements further enhance the experience, allowing visitors to engage with the exhibits on a deeper level. One aspect that particularly impressed me was the museum's commitment to ethical storytelling and representation. It is evident that extensive collaboration and consultation with indigenous communities have taken place. The museum actively involves these communities in the interpretation of their own cultural heritage, providing a more authentic and respectful portrayal. The Ethnographic Museum in Leiden also offers a range of educational programs, workshops, and lectures, making it an ideal destination for both individuals and groups interested in expanding their knowledge of global cultures. The staff is knowledgeable and approachable, always ready to answer questions and provide additional information.

I should lock my mini backpack with my wallet, my cell phone and a bottle of water for my little daughter in the depot. I'm definitely not doing that. So I left again.

Great museum to learn from other regions and cultures in the world. It’s certainly a place to go with kids, as there are questions in each room to earn a stamp and eventually a tattoo. The current exhibition on animals is also nice for kids.

Display was great, stories behind the collection was also great. Great experience overall. Five star if they return the Singosari statues to Indonesia. Edit: They're returning it, and here goes the five stars.

A fascinating collection of cultural artefacts from all over the world. Immerse yourself in this beautifully presented exhibition and you can spend half a day admiring the incredible variety of cultures and traditions past and present. The museum does not shy away from the negative impacts of colonialism on indigenous cultures and populations. Highly recommended

I often recommend this museum to people visiting Leiden. It has an impressive collection, professionally exhibited, and often special exhibits. The permanent exhibit is perhaps most impressive when it comes to the Indonesian region. There was a wonderful special exhibit on the Aztecs last year, which showed an amazing array of archaelogical exhibits and an in-depth portrayal of the culture as a whole. It was very impressive and aesthetically put together. The museum is always worth checking out, and if there is a special exhibit, all the more so.

It has a very nice collection and information of the several peoples on the world's continents. Art, artifacts and photography that makes you want to know more. Every now and then they have very insightful expositions, one of the best was the one about the Aztecs, and recently one about the history of maps and their ideological influence. Very much worth a visit.
