Beautiful museum that I visited during ‘Museum in Bloom’ exhibition. You can admire here various paintings from the Dutch Golden Age era as well as furniture, ceramics, glass and silver. The art and interior was looking amazing with live flowers arranged through the whole museum. Children really enjoyed watching the Doll House. The patio is very beautiful with many benches and tables. Also the cafe is a great addition (the terrace is a reall hidden gem, especially when it’s sunny). I’d not recommend visiting it with little children (up to 3-4 year old) as I was asked to hold my little one by hand at all times. It was fine, but not really easy or handy.

First we were a bit shocked by the huge entry cost of 16€. But with the 15min Film and very good audioguide the museum is it worth. Paintings and also the building itself are well described. It was a poor children home. Some Breugel and other dutch painters can be seen. We spend 2,5 hours. Very nice is also the inner yard. In summer is there a cafe.

Lovely old building, nothing grand! Pretty inner courtyard and garden. Hals is placed in historical/artistic context in first rooms. Some comparisons to modern works seem more followable than others... Big room full of Hals's group paintings and after his last paintings, those of the women and men (separate) who ran the old people's home that the building once was! Very enthusiastic mini-tour about the building's history by a talented young female guide. She took us back to look at some details of paintings we'd have missed otherwise... Thanks! Apparently Hals's later work was a big influence on the impressionists. Speedy approximate brushstrokes capturing character and movement... Only grumble that the staff selling entrance tickets are also manning the souvenir shop. We had to wait ages while some customer bought endless stamps for all his postcards. Is this a village shop or a modern museum in a major Dutch city?

A well maintained museum where they took the energy to make each room a unique experience. Fresh flowers are beautifully displayed in the rooms and the building has some interesting stained glass windows and designs. The garden is nice and quiet and a lovely place to recover some energy and of course the museum's paintings are of world class quality and worth a visit.

This is such a great museum. Its collection is not very big, but it’s very informative and the atmosphere is on point. It has a beautiful peaceful garden, room where your kids can draw, interactive elements and (!) real plush couches, to enjoy art with comfort.

Great deep dive in Frans Hals. Was pleasantly surprised that while he's the feature, there's lots of space devoted to his contemporaries and even a few modern artists as well. The galleries are well laid out and spacious. The historic building itself is very an apt setting. I'm sure the courtyard must be beautiful in the summer months.

Collection includes not only works of Halse but also painters who lived in Haarlem at the same period. Still lifes are marvelous. The interiors are restored in some rooms. I loved briefs about paintings. For all Ukrainians - the entrance for you is free. Just tell that you are from Ukraine. Grab a moment to visit museum.

For the high price paid, I was hoping it would be a bit bigger TBH. There are definitely lovely art pieces inside but I was only there for about an hour. Nice patio garden in the back. Photos allowed. Must book a ticket online. There is an audio guide included which I found very helpful to further illustrate the paintings’ histories, although there is English translation throughout.

(Translated by Google) Very nice museum in the historic center of Haarlem. The collection varies from paintings to silverware. Audio tours are available and there is a small souvenir shop. Here too, the corona measures are well taken into account. Time slots are used, there are disinfection points and there are signs at every room stating how many people are allowed to be there. And this is carefully watched. Worth to visit. Also in this Corona time.

I visited only one of the 2 locations of the Frans Hals museum. I visited Hof. It is a beautiful museum displaying the works of artists that operated (not necessarily born) in Haarlem during the 17th century, with the most famous one of which is Frans Hals upon whom the museum is named! The museum was established in 1862 and it is located in a former “Oude Mannenhuis” which is what could be referred to as a retirement home these days. The structure is well preserved with beautiful original blue-delft and beautiful halls. The exhibition is also further decorated with beautiful flower arrangements which absolutely adds to the unique atmosphere this museum offers.

I am sorry but that was a mistake to go there after the greatest museums in Amsterdam, the Hague, Rotterdam. Only for those who can appreciate the Dutch old masters who are not known for majority. In my opinion they can't handle any compare with Rembrandt or Bruegel. But there were some nice floristic composition during Tulipomania which made the space of museum more lively.

Not as big of a collection as I imagined, but also more diverse than I expected. Mostly on one floor around the courtyard space. Rather than being solely Frans Hals, the museum uses the themes of Hals with both Haarlem and the Dutch Golden Age to make connections among its collection. Excellent introductory video to the museum.

The place where Frans Hals lived and died when his debts got the better of him. A mixture of paintings from the 1600s and contemporary. Several portraits and civic pictures by Frans Hals. Nice audio guide. Lovely cafe. Friendly staff. Recommended

Superb museum. I was afraid it would be boring, but not at all. The archers paintings are amazingly beautiful, and I didn't know Hals had been a source of inspiration for Monet and Manet.

A really well presented museum with a great audio tour. The initial video introduction with AV wall was excellent. Compared to UK prices for a museum it is very expensive but it seems to be the same for all museums in the Netherlands.

Fantastic small museum! Audio tours in several languages explaining not only the art, but also the architecture and history of the building. Very cute and decently priced gift shop at the end. Every employee we interacted with was incredibly kind and accommodating. I would definitely recommend this to be on your must-see list if you are taking a day trip to Haarlem from Amsterdam. It’s also lovely to either do this before or after touring St. Bavo’s since it features very prominently in lots of the art and is not a far walk between the two.

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Frans Hals Museum. We were not familiar with his work, but were very much impressed. There are also other artists whose work is displayed and all were spectacular! It is a definite museum to visit when in Haarlem.

+ Stunning paintings by Frans Hals and contemporaries. + Beautiful location. + Polite staff. + Interesting short video at the beginning. - If possible it would be great to see more drawings. Maybe dedicated a part of the museum to Hals' working process. - The modern "art" that's placed in between the old pieces was not relevant or interesting to us. It seemed like a politically correct move, trying to signal virtue. - If you HAVE to present modern art (which you don't in a museum like this), at the very least show some work that has a relation to Frans Hals. Maybe something by contemporary figurative painters? - The worst example was the low quality photo of a bunch of guys wearing Osama Bin Laden t-shirts. - If it wasn't for the modern "art", this would have been a 5 star experience.

  • 5/5 Isabella D. 3 years ago on Google
Due to CoVID19, they were a bit more strict about reserved entrance time. We were a few hours late but luckily was let in. Your physical museum card is expected but they were fine with the scanned version. They have nice locker area at the entrance so you don't have carry them around. Beautiful paintings was organized in different topic.

Nice museum to highlight the contribution of Haarlem's native son, Frans Hals, and his contemporaries. Its collection was divided into two distinct areas: classic and modern. Despite its size, it does a good job depicting both eras quite well. A good walk between the two buildings. It is easy to spend 2 or 3 hours to cover both sites. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. Quite a good find in Haarlem.

Small and cozy museum in a small location. Some Frans Hals paintings and also from other artists. Not sure if it’s a must go location

  • 4/5 Sarah Jane S. 4 years ago on Google
My type of museum: unlike the Louvre or the Rijksmuseum, where seeing even a quarter of the collection can start to feel like a slog, this is a well sized museum that you can leisurely wander through in 2-3 hours. They have a lovely collection, thoughtfully interspersed with both fresh-cut florals arrangements and contemporary art. If I had a criticism (and it’s a small one), it’s that I wish their shop was bigger! I love a good museum shop and this one was underwhelming. The facility itself was beautiful however, and well worth the time.
