Completely enjoyed my visit to this museum. They had 9 galleries encompassing everything from history, anthropology, animal kingdom, Kenyan tradition and more. You can get a tour guide to show you around free of charge, who was very good and knowledgeable, and I tipped very well. There are several gift shops, a restaurant, a small garden, and a snake display for an additional charge. It’s a very good visit.

Worth your time and money. Artifacts are well kept and maintained. A lot to learn about the history of Kenya. But the museum should come up with rules to regulate the school going children from making too much noise and jumping all over. Would advise going on a weekend or when the school's are closed.

I loved the whole experience at the Museum. So much to take in from the Animals found in Kenya to the children communities living in Kenya. The currency , the contact between Kenya and the outside world is well documented in the museum. To top it up, you also get a chance to visits the snake park and the marine life all in the same place. This is a place I would highly recommend to any person who would like to discover new places and learn new things. It does have to be serious. You can come with your loved ones and a date if possible. There's also a picnic area and a playground the little ones. #picnic #selfiespot

I wasn't sure how good an experience the museum would be. But I really liked it. Especially because we got a free guide to take us around and explain to us the animal, humankind, and Kenyan history. I learned a lot about Kenya during this museum visit. We tipped the guide for his volunteer service.

What a wonderful museum! I highly encourage a visit to this location. There's so much to see and learn. Our tour guide at the Snake House was fantastic. She was well knowledged, relatable, and a great story teller. Go to the museum on you trip.

I very much enjoyed visiting Nairobi National Museum and the Snake Park. I was amazed by the African bird exhibit and the literally thousands of birds they had on display. A wealth of information for African wildlife fans. The central back and currency section was fascinating also. I hadn't realized how much foreign influence there was in Kenya and their banking system. The snake park was interesting and lots of variety of venomous and non-venomous snakes on display. The red spitting cobra seemed the most interested in us and say upright most of the time we were near that display. Also several turtles and crocodiles on display. The only thing I felt disappointed with was the much bigger cost for non-residents. It's common here in Kenya, but the difference for citizens and non-residents is steep. But not so much as the national parks here. 🤣

Amazing experience. Favourite part was Joy’s art collection, unbelievable. Reasonable pricing. If you want to go through details, prepare for at least 3 hours and more (30min) for the Snake Park and Aquarium.

One of the best ways to spend a day in nairobi. Was a pleasant surprise. We were there for 3.5hours but it still felt rushed. We had an awesome time. Its clean, modern and oh so rich. There’s culture, history, an aquarium, a snake/reptile park, a nature walk and a cafe. You have an option to take a guide (a must for our next visit). The staff all around are excellent and the charges extremely reasonable. Was pleasantly surprised at how many people were visiting. My personal favorites were the snake park and the banking history. Very wide variety of snakes.

Sunday, boredom kills. If you haven't been here before. Please pick a Guide. They have great knowledge, and facts of corners you might pass with a brush off. Well renovated, spaced and informative info, and some interesting history bits. The art Gallery was my favorite. I wish the painter was around to help read the paintings. Will be back to purchase though. The snake park,SADLY SO ,is run down,Little collections, dirty glasses, should be free to view. The bathrooms are a big mess emitting strong fumes from little or almost no wash. Hope they fix it up. After the extensive stretch and walk, Some amazing two restaurant options to quench thirst and feed the empty belly. Their food prices are friendly too.

One of the best places to visit while in Nairobi, lovers of history will find this place most amazing. Collection of old things and the origin of many creatures are stored here. It's a good place to bring kids, they learn more about the history of humankind and different species. The entrance for both the museum and snake park is 300ksh. There is a restaurant inside, after visiting the museum, you can visit the restaurant eat then proceed to the snake park. The snake park has crocodiles, tortoises 🐢 and rabbits.

The museum was the only tourist attraction I visited in Nairobi because of the short time. It can really do with a face lift and little fresh paint that can brighten up the building interior. Because it has that dark, old colonial era type feel that just doesn't seem inviting. The collection they have is very reasonable, the display and info is fine, the mini zoo inside is a nice touch and my personal favourite and the whole complex covers a decently vast area so it's fair to say that they have so much room for improvement. I mean after all it's the national museum and since so many tourists visit the country, this should be their first and last impression.

Great museum with a thorough history of Kenya. An incredibly large collection of birds and wildlife found in Kenya as well. It is a great rainy day activity for family of all ages. If you can, I recommend buying tickets ahead of time using the evisa website. There are guides available, for cash, once you arrive at the museum which I recommend. The official, written descriptions are infrequent, so a guide really makes the experience.

Great experience and affordable. mixed with many activities. for me it is a whole day enjoyment. The best part is that you can walk on the peace path which is all green and water sound is everywhere as there is a river on the other side of the gate. Also it is the only place you are the closest to seeing the snakes, turtles and crocodiles. The things on the shop are very very affordable and nice. see the picture and enjoy.

Asides from the Archives located at the CBD in the heart of Nairobi county, the national museum is the go-to place to learn about Kenyan history, culture, traditions, and heritage. It is a beautiful stricture to behold as well as an amazing interior design. There's a lot to see and learn about here. The staff is courteous and the guides are cheerful.

Nice museum to learn about the history of Kenya. They also have display of all animals and birds you see in Africa, a good way to learn about different species. There's a scale park as well, although we didn't visit that. Overall a good place to stop if you have a couple hrs.

Very nice and relaxing place to ease your mind and let your brain wander of to different ideas. Take your time and concider taking a guide if you want some extra information. There's also a chill Garden towards a river and a cafe, restaurant a souvenir shop and a very sad snake park. Definitely a beautiful oasis to escape the tumbling traffic and enjoy some time with your self or your loved ones.

National Museums of Kenya (NMK) is a state corporation established by an Act of Parliament, the Museums and Heritage Act 2006. It is a multi-disciplinary institution whose role is to collect, preserve, study, document and present Kenya’s past and present cultural and natural heritage. This is for the purposes of enhancing knowledge, appreciation since it carries out heritage research, and has expertise in subjects ranging from palaeontology, ethnography and biodiversity research and conservation. The snake park is home to many African snake species. In addition to the museum, visitors are treated to a variety of shopping and dining facilities, as well as botanical gardens and nature trails that offer a serene environment. The museum is open on all 356 days throughout the year from 0830hrs -17300hrs. It is located at the Museum Hill, approximately 10 minutes drive from the Nairobi city center.

The best museum in the country in my opinion. Has all sort of history, nature and artefacts concerning Kenya. The knowledge exhibited in art and collections transcends through biological, social and historical aspects of Kenya's history. I would recommend it to anyone, both domestic and foreign tourists and/or residents.

This was money well spent. I have grown up passing by and had never actually gone in. I am sure am not the only one. I finally decided to visit. Did the booking on E-citizen a week prior. It is very straight forward but that 5shs that they are cutting 🙄. If you are using public means, alight at museum. It is a bit tricky once you alight since road contractors in this country are allergic to pavements, but you will manoeuvre your way somehow. At the gate, you sign it and get in. If you have already paid, just show your ticket and get in. There are two floors. Every exhibition is interesting. I enjoyed reading Dedan Kimathi's letters that are on display. I wish they also had them in his native tongue or were they actually written in English 🤔🤔This is the exhibition that I enjoyed the most. Seeing a very young Mwai Kibaki, John Michuki, Ngugi wa Thiongo and some faces of those Historical figures that we studied in History was interesting in a good way. The birds exhibition was bitter sweet. With all the construction going on, so many of these species are probably extinct or will soon be, without a habitat. There is honestly so much to see. Go early and take your time. There is also the snake park, botanical gardens and if you walk far enough, the John Michuki park is at the very end. Definitely pay for both places. It is KES 350 for locals that is. There is also a bookshop. Wish they created interest Kenyan historical board games, puzzles that you could purchase. I saw a small theatre of sorts. I don't know if they show historical clips or something, but that would be really nice if they did. I wouldn't mind attending historical exhibitions of say Wangari Maathai or Waruhiu Itote aka General China. There are two eateries in the premise and a dolls exhibition as well. I did not know that dolls had so many different significances in African cultures. There is definitely something to learn. Will definitely be back and I highly recommend making a visit to the museum a yearly must do activity.

I loved the museum! A great way to learn more about the Kenyan culture and history. I recommend booking a tour with the local guides who are offering their services right at the entrance of the museum. It makes the whole experience even more interesting. I was also impressed to see some of the world’s oldest and most intriguing hominid specimens!

We were very pleasantly surprised by our family weekend trip to the Museum. The bird collection is absolutely amazing, and some of the history about the different tribes in Kenya was fascinating. The whole place could use some TLC, with a fresh coat of paint and modern LED spot lights on the artifacts instead of the dim florescents. It really seems like there was a lot of love and effort put in to the place a long time ago and then it's kind of been ignored / underfunded for a long time. But, still definitely worth visiting and spreading the word about. The cafe in the garden outside was very nice too, and one of the few places in Nairobi where you can still sit and have a coffee & snack, during the lockdown. If you are tired of being stuck at home, the museum is a great Covid family weekend.

If you are not familiar with the museum, ask for a guide, they are provided with no additional charge and give a great added value to the visit. Entrance for none resident is 1,200 shillings and they do not accept cash. Don't miss the African birds exposition located at the end of the tour.

National Museum is a wonderful place to visit and learn about the history of Kenya. Everything is well arranged. I absolutely enjoyed seeing the art gallery as well as the History of Kenya section. One section leads to another. Didn't visit the snake park but the Museum itself was enough!

Visited today The snake Park is just what made me really impressed. I had a picture holding a snake. Entry at the main gate is free so you can just stay there , have a picnic or take some photos. Visiting the museum is ksh 200 for residents. The snake Park too. They have various reptiles not just snakes they also have a 'fresh water aquarium ' and a marine aquarium. I think it was worth it. You should definitely visit. Ooh yeah didn't bother Visiting the museum unfortunately.

The museum was a great experience (especially on a raining day in Nairobi). Our residence permits for us into the museum and snake park for 600. Museum offered a wide range of history and artwork representing Kenya’s culture, wildlife and political history. The snake park was a great addition where you can see reptiles and tropical fish. For the fullest experience I would allocate 1-2 hours for the museum and 30-60 minutes for snake park. Great for all ages and very family friendly with helpful staff and tour guide options.

Visiting the Museum of Kenya was a fascinating experience. The museum is an excellent place to learn about the history, culture, and natural heritage of Kenya. The museum has a wide range of exhibits that cover topics such as human evolution, wildlife, and traditional Kenyan culture. One of the most impressive exhibits was the Hall of Kenya. This exhibit showcased the cultural diversity of Kenya, with displays of traditional clothing, artwork, and musical instruments from different ethnic groups. It was amazing to see the variety of cultures that exist in Kenya and to learn about their unique traditions and practices. Another highlight of the museum was the section on human evolution. As a science enthusiast, I was fascinated by the displays of fossils and artifacts that traced the evolution of humans over millions of years. It was incredible to see the evidence of how our ancestors lived and how they adapted to their changing environment. The museum also had a section on wildlife, which included displays of various animals found in Kenya, such as elephants, lions, and giraffes. It was interesting to learn about the different habitats and behaviors of these animals, as well as the conservation efforts being made to protect them. Overall, visiting the Museum of Kenya was a great way to learn about the rich history and culture of Kenya. It was a truly educational experience that left me with a greater appreciation for this amazing country.

Good to see but the guides could be better. They volunteer for tips so felt like my guide just rushed me through so I'd learn more by reading on my own. Still there are interesting things to see and definitely should be on your museum list.

It's worth a visit. An eclectic, if dated, collection of animals, humanoid skeletons, art, and history. The adjacent snake park shows some of the most venomous specimens of Africa. Strong recommendation: Buy a ticket in advance via the eCitizen (nmk.ecitizen.go.ke) to avoid long, slow queues and frustration.

We had a delightful afternoon in the museum. I have been to world famous museums like the Smithsonian’s in the USA, and I’d rank this up there with them. It has good displays on the evolution, natural history and Kenya’s national history. All 3 displays were fascinating, factual yet insightful. We received a tour from museum volunteer Griffin and he was splendid at explaining and answering our questions. We are an inquisitive family.

Small museum with reasonably well curated exhibits on the origins of mankind and Kenya. As a tourist, one can get a good understanding of the history and cultures of Kenya. Also attached to museum is a snake and reptile park that is worth a quick stroll through.

This is a serene place to visit when you are in Nairobi for leisure or educational purposes. It is situated a few minutes from downtown Nairobi on the museum hill. It will give you an insight into the history of the country as well as the cultural background . It has an art gallery , a snake park and a nature trail. It also provides dinning and shopping facilities.

A nice museum with well maintained galleries and frendly staff. A "must visit" place when you are in Kenya, great insight into Kenya's history and human evolution. One observation: getting out of the main gallery voids the ticket. It would be nice to be able to go to the bathroom in between.

Great place for both kids and adults to learn the cradle of mankind. collected artifacts from the early 20's can be found here. really in expensive for both locals and foreigners.easily accessible from hotels and routes and also with the help of Google Maps, in the museum there is also a gallery.ample parking and tight security.

This is a small museum, but a well-planned, well-designed one with offers a good insight into the history of Kenya. The displays range from Natural History (including a section on the evolution of Homo sapiens) on the ground floor - a fossil collection here is the single most important one relating to early humans in the world. On the first floor are galleries devoted to the political and socio-cultural history of Kenya, including fascinating glimpses of traditional as well as modern takes on health and sickness, marriage, child-rearing, death, and more. Very interesting.

Kenya Museum is a good place where diversity of both Cultural and Natural habitat is converged and showcased, This is also a place where one can learn the history of the people of Kenya The place however records low numbers of visitors, this can be explained by the fact most visitors are school going children and Tourists. Locals are yet to appreciate domestic tourism and the Museum itself is yet to sensitive the public on what services they are offering.

Good experience, loved it though I never took so many pictures but yea... There is a lot to view in there. Visit its an awesome place apart from the snake park... Snake park wasn't really that good because of its condition... It requires some work done. So yea.. That's why I gave it 3 stars. Amy further information u might need.. Glad I went. Handsome exterior/interior architecture. Staff needs to lighten up and try kindness, especially with all the paperwork involved for entry (-1star). They do not leave a good impression. I can’t imagine if it was crowded. Covid protocol solid. The collection is expansive and spans quite some time. The whole place needs a good shine. Some parts of the collection did seem random, lacked maintenance, and unkept (-1) whereas other portions shined. Recommend a visit but no return.

A very good place if you want to learn about the history, diversity and background of our nation Kenya🇰🇪

  • 3/5 mumbi m. 2 years ago on Google
2nd time there since 2014 and some exhibits like the farming, fishing, currency and politics ones might be new - or I don't remember them from before. The bird exhibit is so extensive - very interesting. My favourite is the elephant 'piece' at one of the first galleries. I liked my experience - I think the visit would be great for all ages but the museum could be so much better compared to other national museums locally but generally good progress

I'm super amazed with the level of documentation they had at the museum, the staff is friendly and tour guides are beyond amazing, definitely shouldn't miss this museum while you're in Nairobi as well as the snake park.

Super awesome! The museum is really cool and well managed. The snake house is well worth the extra money, got to hold a snake and baby chameleon! LDS missionary approved! Tour guide named mercy is the best one to get, friendly and funny! Come with all your friends, super cool, large nature park for free as well.

  • 5/5 Geraldine N. 2 years ago on Google
Learned so much that I wouldn't otherwise have remembered from previous trips yo the museum as a kid. It takes about an hour to go through all exhibition hall. The snake park is run down

  • 5/5 victoria G. 2 years ago on Google
I discovered some nature trails in the heart of the museum. Got lost in the serene nature. Until you see the pond and you come back to reality

This is a great way to spend Sunday. Great place to bring kids. They will have a good time. The evolution exhibit was my favourite. I had a profound experience thinking about how far the human race has come. It's a great place to visit and think about life. Highly recommended when you need a weekend plan.

I enjoyed it very relaxing. The tour guide are excellent they know why and what they are there, very informative. Loved the place

  • 5/5 Anh Nguyet L. 1 year ago on Google
Very lovely and informative museum on the colonial past, ethnic makeup, and nation building of Kenya. The snake park was not impressive enough. Buy your souvenirs at the Crafts Caravan trade shop right outside the building entrance, cheaper, friendlier, and more options than the shop inside.

  • 4/5 Isabela 10 months ago on Google
Definitely loved the exhibitions in the museum and the snake park is interesting if you ask for a guide at the entrance. If you can, take time to take a stroll through the plants garden and the nearby park. Combined tickets (main museum and snake park) are ksh 1,500 for foreign adults (10 dollars).

  • 5/5 Amit M. 9 months ago on Google
Interestint exhibitions, especially the one about the cradle of mankind with the Original exhibits! The museum could be organized better with a better route and guidance for the visitors (who dont want to hire a guide), but it is worth to come to learn about Kenya and the wildlife.

  • 4/5 masoud h. 10 months ago on Google
Was a very nice park for walking and relaxing and improve our knowledge about plant and trees in Africa. There are 2 museum you should pay for them to go into. National museum and snake showroom but it was I think a little expensive for tourists

  • 5/5 Kelvin W. 9 months ago on Google
The national museum is a terrific place to visit of you are keen on gaining knowledge on a wide variety of areas, from flora ,visual arts ,fauna , local cultures and history just to name a few... This is a must visit local for anyone of culture and a great place to take kids to learn and be wowed!

  • 5/5 Michael O. 8 months ago on Google
Well it's worth a visit entry kes 200 if you're only visiting the museum,if you wish to visit snake park and museum damage is kes 300,here you'll find preserved body of the famous Ahmed the Jumbo with longest tusk as well as Sudan the last northern White rhino 🦏,plenty to see here at good price

  • 2/5 Amman A. 7 months ago on Google
I had high hopes for visiting this museum as we had a couple of hours to spare but was sadly disappointed. The fees for non-residents felt a little extortionate, and they don't accept cash. If you don't have mpesa then you have to complete a billing form and use your credit card...it took some time as the queue was long. The museum is dated. However, there are some gems like the history of the Hominids with skull fragments dating back 17m years, the culture of Kenya, the impact of Swahili in the country, and the trade routes between Kenya and the Middle East. Overall, whilst there were some gems, the majority of the museum felt antiquated. And coupled with its location, where the traffic is standstill during rush hour, this museum can be given a miss.

  • 5/5 AP K. 7 months ago on Google
This is one of beautiful museum I have seen. Don't miss to see Sudan, the white rhino dummy. Make sure you take an assistance of a local guide for you to know the background of things on display

  • 5/5 Samuel K. 7 months ago on Google
The Museum is quite rich with Kenyan social, cultural, and economic history. You may need to give ample time for the visit. There is Snake Park as well. It costs Ksh 200 to enter the Museum or the Snake park. A combined ticket of Ksh 300 can be purchased for both places. It takes a while to make payment through ecitizen you have to be a bit patient.

  • 5/5 Victor W. 7 months ago on Google
A massive museum filled with artifacts throughout history. My favorite exhibit is the currency exhibit of Kenya over time and an attempt to document every species of common bird found in Kenya. There are 10+ double sided shelves filled with bird specimens.

  • 5/5 mercy m. 6 months ago on Google
The place to go if you wanna discover more about the history of Kenya and some of the animals within. The snake park too is an awesome place to visit, especially if you wanna unlearn some myths about snakes. There's beautiful aquarius with beautiful fish too...

  • 4/5 Purity N. 6 months ago on Google
The place is fun being around but I'd advice tourists who are non citizens to get a citizen to buy them tickets as they use e-citizen app. It's a nice place to learn about the early government and our Kenyan history .

  • 5/5 Viola F. 6 months ago on Google
Nicely done, the guided tour for 10 USD was also worth it and the attached botanical garden is great for a small stroll around afterwards. It also attatches to the park next door on google maps. The only annoying thing is the payment process because they don't take cash so I had to fill out a whole online form with card validation (like an online shopping purchase) and all that. Took some time. They don't allow water inside the building.

  • 4/5 Connie O. 5 months ago on Google
Good place to go if you want to understand the history of Kenya. You can also hire a guide, payment is a tip, which I did and I think that makes it more enjoyable and easier to go through the rooms chronologically.

  • 4/5 salem thirumany C. 5 months ago on Google
Maintained neatly. The birds gallery is fascinating and has a collection of various bird species found across East Africa. So also the gallery about the evolution of mankind.

  • 5/5 Claire M. 4 months ago on Google
A great place to learn about Kenyan History and most of the amazing things/places and diversity Kenya has to offer. Please improve your payment options for less friction at check in.

  • 1/5 Frank W. 4 months ago on Google
If you like to visit the place it will be good just pay the entrance fee in cash otherwise you have to go through a bad registration form for payment with your entire information about you they don't have card readers. At the end it even won't work I was not the only one. There is no ATM on side .

I finally managed to overcome my fear of snakes on a great date with osiep chunya on a Saturday afternoon. We spent up to 3 hours exploring the mammals gallery, Kenya history gallery, cycle of life gallery, Numismatic exhibition, snake park, and botanical garden. All these activities costed us a total of ksh 650 (residents) on a all access ticket for 2 paid via mobile money (MPESA) cash is not accepted. I would recommend one to make sure you have a smartphone since there’s ticket that you must take a photo of it after payment at the reception desk then give it the admission door for verification.

This museum has a variety of collections all related to Kenyan history and wildlife. I was particularly amazed by the bird collection and the skulls in the “Cradle of human kind gallery”. Well worth a visit. I only had 1.5 hours and felt too rushed. I think I could have spent double that. Buy your ticket online as they don’t accept cash.
