Samburu National Reserve is very peaceful and attracts animals because of the river that runs through it and the mixture of forest, thorn trees and  grass vegetation. The natural serenity that is evident here is due to its distance from industry and the inaccessibility of the reserve for many years. This place is very far from Nairobi and it had taken almost 8 hours by road. Make sure you travel during the day so that you get a glimpse of Delmonte Farms. Unlike, Nairobi and surrounding places, the day time temperatures were higher in this region. Make sure you spend good amount of time with locals and enjoy Camel rides, a good long walk thru the reserve and so on.

Welcome to Samburu National Reserve, one of the most enjoyable tour destination boasting of different flora and fauna across East Africa. LOCATION Samburu National Reserve is situated at the southeastern corner of Samburu County, Kenya. It is bordered to the south by Ewaso Nyiro River, which separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve. The reserve covers an area of 165 Km² and is located around 345Km from Nairobi. Climatic Conditions The Reserve lies within ecological zone V- which is classified as arid and semi- arid with moisture index of 42 to 57, which indicate that evapo-transpiration is greater than available moisture. The days are extremely hot while the nights are cool. The annual mean temperatures range between 18ºC and 30ºC, while the mean annual rainfall is 354mm with peaks in November and April. The dry season starts in late May, and goes up to early October during when large concentration of wildlife is found in the reserve due to availability of lush vegetation along the Ewaso Nyiro River, the main source of water to the Reserve and the nearby communities. Available games (and chances of seeing ) The reserve is reach in wildlife with fame for abundance in rare northern specialist species such as the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx (Also referred as Samburu Special). The reserve is also popular with a minimum of 900 elephants. Large predators such as the Lion, Leopard and Cheetah are an important attraction (Kamunyak the Miracle Lioness that adapted the baby Oryx is a resident in the reserve). Wild dog sightings are also a common attraction to this unique protected area. Birdlife is abundant with over 450 species recorded. Birds of the arid northern bush country are augmented by a number of riverine forest species. Lesser Kestrel and the Taita Falcon are species of global conservation concern and they both utilize the reserve.  Five species categorized as vulnerable have recorded in the reserve. These are African Darter, Great Egret, White-headed Vulture, Martial Eagle and the Yellow-billed Ox-pecker. Critically endangered species under CITIES – Pancake tortoise (malacochersus tornieri) is found in the reserve.

This Unique Park is Home to the Famous Big 5 and Special 5 Wildlife making it a must visit while in Magical Kenya. The Landscapes are breathtaking. Most of the Lodges and Camps are at the banks of the Ewaso Ngiro River. You will be sure to spot most of the animals along the river banks. Birdwatching is a must with different species of birds found here. Overall recommended for all types of travelers.

It's a long drive from Nairobi but worth it. It's got all sorts of wildlife and the Sarova Shaba camp is great. It's not crazy like the Mara

What a wonderful place. An opportunity to see an alternative to the norm in terms of how a tribe / people has existed from (what seems like) the beginning of time - certainly since the beginning of human civilisation. The tribes people are / were just as curious about us as we about them so interaction was very good. Most were able to speak some English and some were very well educated so we were really treated to a lesson in how the other half live. It was a real eye opening experience and definitely recommended ?? ?? ?? ??

You can spot the big five here as many other animals and insects, if you stay for some days inside the Reserve. For the entrance you can only pay with Mpesa or with cash. They do not accept credit cards or any other online payments. 4 stars because it’s very expensive, especially if you camp inside the reserve.

Over all it is of course great seeing wild animals, but when it comes the NPs/Reserves Samburu wasn't the most amazing one. It was quite expensive, you could only pay by Cash or mpesa and there were zero directions inside the Reserve. The Main Road is also very washboarded. The Road along the Water was wonderful and we were able to see loads of giraffes there.

One of the greatest parks in Kenya. Dusty and dry. Great landscapes. Lush vegetation. High concentration of fauna (grevy zebras, reticulated giraffes, elephants, birds, hippos, crocodiles, leopards, lions...). I recommend neighboring parks (which are included in Samburu park fees) : Buffalo Springs with much more flat savanna and Shaba with gorgeous landscapes. I've camped on public campsites and in private tented camps which were great but at very different price points! Don't forget your bathing suit. My top 3 in Kenya.

I visited this reserve two days ago stayed for 3 days and loved every moment of it. The weather was great at 29degrees Celsius. It kept raining sporadically so the vegetation was quite lush. Sighted very many Elephants, Gazelles, Guruneks, Impalas, wide variety of birds, Baboons, two Lions, Warthogs. There are several camp sites which are well maintained. We visited Samburu Lodge for a swim. Great place. Planning to return.

Home to the samburu special five wild animals. Do you know the Samburu special five? If you don't, well here are the names; generuk, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, somali ostrich and gravy zebra. A wide range of fauna and flora can satisfy your adventure to the fullest, the flomboyant Samburu culture is another attraction you can't ignore in your travel itinerary to the Samburu National Reserve. Wide range of accommodation facilities provide you with a variety places to choose as your stay over in Samburu National Reserve; from lodges, luxury tented camps and campsites all depends on the depth of your pocket.

I enjoyed my visit here since this place has unique animals that are not found in other parks. Here I saw the gravys zebra, reticulated giraffe, generuke, lesser kudu, oryx among other animals and birds. The scenic landscape adds beauty to the trails as you watch the sun setting on the beautiful hills.

Didn’t like the park much. Not well maintained, guards at the gate didn’t ask for any details from me- name, ID, nothing. How do they account for who went in/out?? Saw some elephants and ostriches though.

Nestled in Kenya's north, Samburu National Reserve isn't just a wildlife haven, it's a luxurious sanctuary. Lavish lodges like Samburu Intrepids and Sopa Lodge cater to discerning travelers, while Elephant Bedroom Camp and Soroi by Larsens offer intimate wilderness experiences. But the real stars of the show are the Samburu Five; Gerenuk:Graceful gazelles balancing on their hind legs to reach leaves on acacia trees. Reticulated giraffe: Towering beauties adorned with a mesmerizing net-like pattern. Gravy zebra: Sleek stripes distinguish these endangered stunners from their common cousins. Somali ostrich: The world's biggest bird, strutting with flamboyant feathers and impressive speed. Beisa oryx: Majestic antelope with long, straight horns and striking black and white markings. Beyond these iconic creatures, Samburu boasts lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, and over 450 bird species. The Ewaso Ng'iro River carves through the arid landscape, creating a vibrant oasis teeming with life. So, if you're seeking a Kenyan adventure infused with luxury and a unique cast of wildlife characters, Samburu National Reserve awaits.

How amazing is it to take a boat on a weekend and cruise around in nature's finest. Do you remember the last time you did walk barefoot on soft grass and gazed at the lake with a little bit of wistful thinking?. Living in a chaotic city can really make you appreciate the quite of nature with animal sounds and just get a peaceful mind. Hippopotamus are among the animals that intrigue me much and being there to view them is really amazing. There are various animals such as giraffe and zebras. You definitely want to take your identification documents to show wether you are a citizen, resident or tourist because the charges vary. You also get a chance to see the boys fishing. This is a really good place for family bonding and team building. The boat drivers do act as the tour guides. There is so much peace found in the lake and wild.

One of the best parks I have ever visited. So much wildlife to see and so peaceful and tranquil. Definitely worth doing the boat trip which lasts an hour or so and to really see the beauty of this place. There are birds everywhere and lots of wildlife beside the lake bank. You can see hippos in the water as well as giraffes and other beasts roaming around freely. You can enjoy the water and take in the Amazing surrounding views. There is so much on offer that it is definitely worth it. Loved every single second of the trip to the lake and will definitely be back for a second viewing. You can spend the day here if you wish and just enjoy nature at its best. Was not busy at all so did not feel overwhelmed and crowded. Could not recommend this place enough, it is a must see.

A very interesting ecosystem that combines geological history with wildlife and human activities. Many bird species can be observed as well as Colubus and vervet monkeys, giraffes, zebras, hippopotamus and more. Hire a boat from one of the camps and make sure to find a guide that knows the area well.

The roads inside are definitely not perfect, try avoiding to go during rainy season as this will majorly affect your chances of spotting the big 5, the muddy roads may bring your trip to a halt and definitely not recommending a visit with a saloon, the roads are bumpy and brace yourself for neck pain and back pain. As the bridge has collapsed its not possible to go to buffalo springs from samburu national park and vice versa, instead you will have to exit samburu from the Archer's Gate and head back towards main road and enter buffalo springs after approximately 20km ride and vice versa. Definitely not recommending a day trip as it might get very difficult to spot the cats, during our visit we didn't spot a single big Cat and all we spotted was giraffes and elephants. Having a guide would be better as he would know certain locations where you are most likely to find the Lions , Cheetah and Leopard. A one time visit is good but definitely do not expect activities such as hunting.

Its home to elephants and also where kamunyak, the Miracle lioness adopted the onyx. Other activities that one can do are cultural tours, learning about the samburu culture.
