A little hidden but a nice, small place with remnants of the past. No fee is required to enter. The trains displayed have been restored to its original appearance so both the interior and exterior are quite pretty. There’s a lot of families bringing their kids there during the weekend but it’s not very crowded.

It’s a smaller museum with few train compartments, one locomotive engine , one steam engine Nicely preserved . The train station is very nice with original look But I feel they should add more space and items to make it more attractive

Very nice experience! The railway museum is free and is located on a small area which is very nice with children who will be able to easily walk through it. The main attraction, steam engine was being renovated together with some carriages but there were still nice things to see, like 1st class carriage from 1954. You can also safely walk on the train tracks. Recommended place for any train enthusiast.

The museum is free to enter and that should probably give you an indication of what to expect. I spent around 30 minutes walking around. They have a small display inside with a history of the railways in Hong Kong, and a couple of engines and carriages outside, some of which you can go inside. And that's about it.

I like this train museum a lot. It combines the tranquility of Tai Po district, an ancient feel from the green surrounding and a historical education on train transportation. Its set up is a reminiscent of an old train station. There are old train carriages for visitors to go on board and take pictures. These train carriages are well maintained and clean! It is a photogenic place, so couples and university graduates like to have their professional photos taken there!

Nice little museum in Taipo, good presentation of HK and South China railway development history, recorded all generations of HK railway/subway train systems and including precious first generation stations photos and articles. It's like taking you back to old times when you sat on the wooden seat with overhead fan inside a cart from 1950s. Don't miss this little gem if you 30min to 1 hour to spare.

The Hong Kong Railway Museum is a railway museum in Tai Po, Hong Kong. It is now under the management of the Leisure and Cultural Service Department. Opened on 20 December 1985, it is located at the site where the old Tai Po Market railway station was built in 1913. Admission to the museum is free. Wikipedia

A small but very informative museum. For a native Hongkonger coming back from overseas, it reignites memories of the good old days, as well as fills in the development of the system that we missed out while not here. The outdoor exhibit is simple but nicely laid out for a gentle stroll through memory lane. It is free admission so that is definitely worth a visit.

A great place for the family out on Sunday. A couple of trains on display and one where you can get on it. Probably more interesting for the kids than myself. Free entry though. Nearby parking available.

The Hong Kong Railway museum is a specialty attraction in Tai Po, making use of a declared monument and historic Tai Po Market Train Station (1913) as well as a historic locomotives and passenger coaches. The museum is located at the corner of Shung Tak and Yan Hing Street in Tai Po, around half way between Tai Po market MTR and Tai Wo MTR Stations. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm (Wed to Mon), closed on Tuesdays. If you are a history buff or have interests in old trains, you enjoy a 30-45 minute visit to the Hong Kong Railway Museum. Also if you are looking for something fun to do with children and plan to be in the Tai Po area, this is a neat free attraction worth spending a bit of time. The Tai Po Market Station has a traditional Chinese temple exterior, the interior is divided into three rooms which are used for exhibitions. One is setup like the ticketing office of an old station and the other two provide information about old rail stations around Hong Kong, locomotives and the general history of rail over the past 120 years in Hong Kong. The exhibition rooms have been redesigned and given a more classic feel recently. As you exit the back of the old station you will find the famous Diesel Electric Engine No 51 named after former Hong Kong Governor Sir Alexander Grantham. This locomotive was used between 1955 to 1983 as a passenger train in HK. There is a small Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotive as well as six passenger coaches from various decades. You can enter passenger coaches, walk through, have a seat and just think about what rail travel would have been like in the past. Note - Unfortunately, during the Covid-19 pandemic, this coaches are are not available for entry at this time. However, during normal times, they are quite neat to experience as part of your visit to the museum.

Information not updated. We went there for the rail model after reading their webpage. There we could not locate the display, its picture and description are still in the leaflet though. We asked the staff and she said it's removed long time ago already. I asked her why not update the information, she said they wouldn't before ALL leaflets were given out. I told her maybe some visitors come for the rail model and she just turned away without a word.

This used to be the Tai Po Market train station. It was then converted to a museum in December 1985. The building, tracks, locomotives and train carriages are all well maintained. Take your time to go through the museum and you'd get to feel how people used to travel back in the day. 🙂

This railway museum is located near Tai Po Market Station. I walked from this station to the Museum, it's about 10 mins walk. This museum shows visitors the story of railway development of HK, in particular the transformation of the railway system i.e. diesel engine to electric engine as well as the modernization of train compartments. The museum premise is neat and tidy and offers free entry for visitors.

A small and out of the way museum. If you like trains or have nothing else to do this would be a nice place to spend some time looking at old trains. It is free admission.

Fun and enjoyable experience to visit this museum. It is a small museum. There are only a couple of train engines on display. The railway carriages give a glimpse of the past. Good for little kids.

Little gem of a museum, some very cool exhibits which are well kept and well presented with interesting historical information. Helpful and interested attendants/ curators. A really nice experience taking in a bit of the transport history of old Hong Kong.

Fantastic little free museum!!! Heaps of photos, info on the old Hong Kong Railway network to the Present. Several restored passenger carriages have been restored beautifully which you can walk thru and sit down in. One big loco has been restored but unfortunately you cannot go on that. A great place to spend an hour or so. Very short walk from many bus stops and train station. Free WiFi available.

新不如舊。old station is much prettier. ard 10-15 min visit. just an old train historical info is not enough. it is a venue to brag about the glorious development of current railway.

Another nicely-resurrected historical attraction in Tai Po along with the old police station, the 6,500 sq meter open-air Hong Kong Railway Museum was the former Tai Po Market Railway Station built in 1913 with a traditional Chinese style roof. Besides the station that houses a few exhibits, there’s an old locomotive along with passenger carriages that visitors can climb on board.

This was built 110 years ago in Ta I Po Market. After the station was moved to the current Tai Po Market station, the old one was set-up as a museum with couple of old trains displaying, with the ticketing hall as well. It's worth to go with family to see HK history about railway development.

The place has some very good history, but they really need some more exhibits on the MTR system currently in HK. Put one of the older subway cars on display and discuss their make and model and dates. Also need more access into the cab of the trains.

Nice museum with the history of hongkong railway and MTR itself. Worth for an hour or a couple hour or short walk. It's quite far from Hongkong central; but if you have spare time, I recommend to visit this place. You can take some good photos/videos. I wish it can be improved further. There's a dedicated transportation museum on my country and it was Huge. Hongkong railway museum can be huge too since they are one of the pioneer of MRT in Asia.

Interesting place to explore and learn about the history of Hong Kong's railway system. Quite a few trains on display that would appeal to all train enthusiasts. Entry is free and not a bad place to visit if you have 30 minutes to spare and in the area.
