Under renovation, only one floor open. But free coupon for next visit. Great view of harbour. Interesting history of Hong Kong, shipping industry.

A MUST visit when coming to Hong Kong! The unsuspecting name does not reveal the true importance and value of this museum. It describes vividly the more than 300 years of trade between the West and China - especially the European trade with China via Hong Kong. We can learn that there is nothing new to this world - todays trade and relationship issues and mutual benefits for both worlds have not much changed in principle - all that changed is technology and media. We can learn from this museum that trade between the western world and China is mutually beneficial since hundreds of years - so we can truly relax a little bit in our overexcited times and refrain from getting carried away with the different political systems in place. It's does not matter on either side - Let's learn a bit from history and how we are in the end all just humans who want to have a decent good life ! this museum is very educational and teaches is us daily life in the "old times" and you will be surprised how close it is to the "new times" that we live in. Spend 2 hours there BUT GO ON WEEKENDS when volunteers are there to explain you details - otherwise you will not capture the essence of the trade history and how it relates to today's world. THE guides are very knowledgeable and competent and extremely friendly and helpful. A privately run Museum - my respect. Absolutely worth a visit.

Once upon a time this museum was located at Stanley but nowadays it has moved to the piers in Central. The museum makes the most of the new space that it has. The many galleries in the museum are either chronological or thematic. Walking down from reception takes you into the early maritime history of China and there are some nice early ceramic models of boats and reconstructions of early types of Chinese ships. There is also a very nice display on early trade routes. As you move through the gallery you enter the section on trade with the West. There are some lovely canton wares on display. There is also a canon from the opium war once displayed outside the tower of London. As you move through the gallery and go upstairs the focus is more on WW2, trade and trading. There are models and paintings of Georgian and Victorian trade ships and a gallery of modern model ships. Also as you go up the stairs you see modern ship equipment and learn about modern trade in the city as well as the infilling of the harbour. The highlight probably is a simulator of a ship deck you can use with an appointment.

This is a must-see for anybody interested in the history of Hong Kong, as the entire Bay and Pearl River Delta has had and continues to have such an intimate relationship with the sea. The museum covers various aspects of archaeology, seafaring, trade, colonization, modern-day management, and ecological preservation. The exhibits are interesting, clear, well-labeled, and substantial— full of fun artifacts, artwork, and ship models. Even audiences not familiar at all with Chinese history would find the exhibits accessible. The videos and media presentations are well-placed and in balance with the rest of the exhibits. I think this museum is suitable for both children and adults. The museum is easily reached by ferry. It is wheelchair accessible although you do need to use a back entrance to get into the A level.

There is a beautiful café on the top floor of the museum near to the Star Ferry Terminal which serves nice cakes and light western meals, and tea and coffee. It also has a outdoor deck area from which you can enjoy the beautiful Hong Kong waterfront views. The place is manned by seniors and less-privileged youngsters. Worth a visit before you take the Star Ferry to Kowloon.

Entrance fee was HK$30. They tried hard to collate any memorabilia related to maritime business in Hong Kong and Canton. There were lavatory inside so that one need not to hurry.

Located at ferry harbour, it feel so maritime and near ocean. You can see hong kong maritime history here and ship miniature. The building is modern with air conditioning, perfect place for rest from hot weather

(Translated by Google) This is a maritime museum built by the big shipowners/giants/descendants of the shipping industry in Hong Kong in the early years. Although the place is not very large, the collections and exhibits are extremely rich. It is definitely not available in other public museums. It is good as a collective memory. It is worth visiting and browsing to increase your knowledge.

Spent the 2.5 hours in this beautiful museum. Situated right by the waterfront between Star Ferry and Public Piers. Collections of nautical artifacts, paintings, porcelains, models, and instruments are vast and reflecting the importance of Hong Kong being a world trade harbour. Stayed longer as they offered guided tour when I was about to leave and turned out it was the best guided tour with information otherwise I would miss. Highly recommended for all ages.

A great way to spend a few hours on a rainy day if you're interested in history. There's lots of information on the ports past and about its trading over the years, together with lots of models and examples of the items traded, but don't expect any actual boats because there aren't any so it wouldn't interest everyone! It is quite a large museum and there is a great view point to watch the ferries and shipping - and it is cool being able to see the radar in real-time and track the boats you can see out of the window! This museum might not be so interesting for children as its not an interactive museum and if they aren't interested in reading the panels and looking at the exhibits then they could get easily bored.

Love this history museum, one of my favourites in Hong Kong. Passionately curated, complementary harbour front location, with plenty of little known Hong Kong stories. Even for people without a specific interest in maritime history, it offers an engaging and entertaining look at Chinese and Hong Kong maritime history which inevitably touches on European and American trade, life in the colony, Canton, shipping technology, cultural exports, and WWII as well. The current retrospective on American trade is thorough and surprisingly fascinating. Extremely affordable entrance and worth at the very least a few hours of your time. I've also found return visits to be very rewarding.

Great museum - lots of interesting displays and information. Fabulously located at Central Pier so the museum sits out into the water making boat / ferry spotting a fun activity for younger children. My three year old enjoyed it but would be great to have more interactive displays for younger kids. The displays are probably more suited to older children that can read / have an interest in maritime history and adults than toddlers/younger kids.

The entrance might give you a wrong impression, in fact the exhibits are very rich from the size of a small but good museum. Easily spend an afternoon in it and have a nice break by watching the busy harbour. Highly recommended!

Very educational and packed with many historical info. Ample of artifacts. Some area can be more well-lit such as the written placards. Was intended to go upstairs for coffee but the staff wasn’t really courteous. So went down and planned to spend some relaxing time. Ended up spent over an hour there and not even able to finish the whole exhibit. Store area can be organized better. Seems cramped but it does have a lot of gift options.

Very rich in stories related to shipping in HK and China. 3 levels of exhibit, so allow more hours to go through, esp the lowest level. But need to pay 30 HKD as entry fee. Also got guided tours at 4pm in weekend.

Have passed by this museum many times but didn’t know it is so amazing and spacious!! The design of this museum and the items shown are fascinating. We felt like sailing on the ocean. What a pity that the ship bridge simulator was out of service that day. Will definitely come back for it!

If you are interested to see boats and history about the HK harbour changes, it’s a good museum to visit. We spent about 90 minutes in there to see the exhibits. Learned more about HK after this visit. Without annual museum pass, the entry fee would be HKD 30/person. I have museum pass, so only had to pay HKD 15/person.

A hidden treasure in Hong Kong!! I wanted to visit this museum since years... finally I made it! To my positive surprise, although it's not a huge, high profile museum, there are many things to see inside. The best part is, if you go during the weekend, there are free guides to take you through the different parts of the museum. They are volunteers, very knowledgeable in their selected topics, and you can have a really good conversation with them. There are also regular seminars/presentations on history, marine life... held in this museum. Visit their website to find out more. Absolutely recommend this little treasure to those who are interested in maritime history, history of Hong Kong, China to visit. You will not be disappointed.

I liked this museum. We thought that we could come out in 1 hour. Actually not. It took around 5 hrs to complete it. There are so many exhibits to see and learn. Best part is Student's admission fee is HK$ 15,while adults pay HK$30.Students have to show valid student ID. Students, adults both will enjoy this museum. Don't forget to experience ship simulation.

Much more in depth and interesting than expected with a thorough history of the way Hong Kong has been used as a port town for centuries, and a really nice integration of the multi-cultural and colonial history of the city. The exhibits span from the beginning of the opium trade to the very modern renovations if the docks and wharfs today. Honestly, I think it's a must see in HK. Also it has a FANTASTIC viewing deck and fixed binoculars.

I like the content of the museum in general, I don’t mind they are a lot of commercials and promotions due to the nature of its organisation, but I think the infrastructure can be improved. For example, the lighting system in the basement is quite bad, some lights are not functioning while the other create shadows on the artefacts. Many artefacts were not labelled so we could not get further information about them, some artefacts were removed on the day we visited, and some just look unfinished. The staffs were chatting very loudly at the reception that we can hear them walking out from the gallery. Extra information for people planning a visit, the ticket is $30 for adults. Senior citizen, students, and kids get half price concession. The lockers do not have keys on it, however you can leave your belongings at the reception.
