The Forsgate Conservatory, which occupies an area of 1,400 square metre, comprises three sections, namely the Display Plant House, the Dry Plant House and the Humid Plant House. An adjustable environmental control equipment has been installed in the Conservatory to simulate different climatic conditions for the display of plants from arid region and tropical area. Display Plant House The Display Plant House is designed for staging thematic displays of popular cultivated plants. Plants of different genuses and families are displayed at the Display Plant House on a rotational basis. Throughout the year, over 30 groups of these plants are shown including Orchids, Begonias, Anthuriums, Amorphophallus, Bromeliads, Herbs, Aquatic and Bulbous Plant, etc. Visitors can appreciate the beauty of various types of plants at the Display Plant House in different seasons during the year. Humid Plant House The exhibits in the Humid Plant House comprise a wide variety of Ferns, Palms, Bromeliads, Carnivorous Plants and Jungle Foliage Plants from South Africa, Southeast Asia and America. These exhibits are arranged in zonal groups according to their places of origin. Plant species with ecological features and economic values such as Rubber Tree, Coffee, Cacao, Breadfruit Tree and Vanilla have been specially collected. Blooming and fruiting have been recorded for some of these species. The Humid Plant House is maintained at a year-round temperature ranging from 23℃ to 33℃ through an automatic heating and cooling system. The automatic fogging system will produce a layer of floating water vapour underneath the glazed cover. The water vapour absorbs much of the solar energy during evaporation and is discharged through the vents on the rooftop. Dry Plant House Cacti, succulents and plants from arid areas are displayed in the Dry Plant House. It is always kept hot and dry with a maximum temperature of 33℃ and sixty percent (60%) relative humidity. To make the environment of the Dry Plant House more interesting, artificial rockery and mini canyons are constructed to simulate the habitat for plants of arid areas.

Awesome spot we stumbled across in the middle of Hong Kong Park. There are 3 different plant houses all simulating different climatic conditions. It was a really nice find in the middle of the city & it was also air conditioned so that was a massive plus in the middle of an incredibly humid day!

Such a great shame to see staffs chuck away all the blossoming flower pots in the routine flower display renewal. I don’t know how often they do it but 20-30 fresh flower pots were thrown into the bin bags without a glimpse of love or care. Including all the pots and soil. I would thought such a place would at least be environmental friendly. It’s not just about looking good is it…

Quite nice to have access to this right in the middle of the city to learn about the rainforest ecosystems along with the HK aviary, they are close to each other . Take 2 hours and you can do both. Free access and it’s inside HK park - 30 minutes walk from central. Google it!

We often pop into the Forsgate Conservatory when visiting Hong Kong Park. This is a free place to visit and a decent place to spend 20-30 minutes to see the vegetation, plants and flowers housed at their three room facility. The Display Plant House, found on the ground floor, has a fair collection of potted orchid plants and other garden variety vegetation that is nice to see. Upstairs you will find a Dry Plant House with cacti and other arid region vegetation. As you walk past this room, you then enter the Humid Plant House, where more tropical plant life is found. This room in particular is better to visit in the spring time when more blooms are in season. During the summer, its a more green and less colourful from what we have seen over the years. As you exit the building, you will see water on both sides with lily pads. If you listen carefully, you will probably hear the frogs which reside in this pool area. They are usually croaking when we pass by. If you are patient enough, you can often pick out one or two somewhere in the small pond. In the end, the conservatory is a nice place to make a quick visit when visiting Hong Kong Park. It is small but free as well so why not have a peek inside?
