2023 August 4.5★ It's FREE folks. While the story might be a little confusing, it's still done very nicely and puts in a mix mash of historical and iconic items about Hong Kong's history. Black and white outlines filled in with a projection overlay in most cases as it contrasts with them filling in the story and bringing certain elements to life. Very impressive. If your out of town, it's certainly worth checking out.

Came on the weekend. Relatively crowded but free entry so it’s understandable. Content is mostly about HK past and their culture. However, one thing I dislike is that there is no storyline. They are just presenting information to you in dots but there’s no lines to connect the dots. Friend says that the museum of history is just reading. Suggest you avoid if you don’t like to read and prefer interactive stuffs Unfortunately, the translations are very off. If you are bilingual, you will know. Suggest you read both the languages or google translate at least to see both sides of the story.

I was blown away to see that the exhibit on the history of Hong Kong was completely free. One of the best and most extensive exhibits I've seen. I spent several hours in the museum before realizing that if I wanted to get through it all I needed to stop trying to read all the excellent information provided. I ended up staying until closing time and returning the next day for a few more hours to finish seeing everything.

(Translated by Google) October 18, 2020 is the last day before the closing of the Hong Kong Museum of History for renovation. There are a lot of visitors in the museum on this day. I don’t think the permanent exhibition hall of the museum has been visited by so many people in more than ten years. Everyone carefully watched each exhibit and each introduction video. Everyone is constantly taking photos of different attractions in the museum, especially the scenery/exhibits in the early days of Hong Kong. Some people say that history is a story written for the victors. In the current political atmosphere, it is not surprising that the exhibition materials in the history museum will be overwritten or hidden by those in power this time. So everyone took this opportunity to visit the museum and take pictures, to make a record of how those in power will paint themselves.

The museum is currently in renovation, which only provides a temporary exhibition of the “Hong Kong Story”. The exhibition contains a small areas of each period of the history of Hong Kong, from ancient time to after sovereign handover. The part of colonial history, Japanese occupation and the 60-70’s are pretty informative, with some of the “rebuilt” shops and houses to demonstrate that period of time.

I went to this museum several years ago. I would tell people it was the best historical museum I had been to—thoughtfully laid out and very comprehensive. No more. Although the main museum is presumably being renovated, it is clear from the temporary exhibits that Chinese propaganda is being infused. Words and ideas changed, history altered according to the new narrative. A shame. Hong Kong has a unique and varied history all its own, and now (according to one of the displays) has “rejoined the Motherland.” Yeah right.

This is a place worth your visit!!! It relate the whole story of Hongkong and there people. You will learn how Japan, China and England created that amazing country. Moreover the entrance fees are free on Wednesday, which is a great way to explore the museum. Believe me your eyes will surely be delighted.

Went there on the 29th December 2023 and almost all of the exhibitions are still under renovation since 2020. The only two exhibitions there were the Chinese manned space exhibition and 95 years of public service broadcasting. Suggest to search the official webpage for more information before going to the museum to avoid any disappointments.

Great place to visit to learn about Hong Kong's culture and history. The exhibits are thorough and well arranged, and you could easily spend hours here (a minimum of 3!) if you're being thorough. They allow picture-taking which is nice and is free of charge. If you are interested and don't have much to do, this is a great place to visit for family and friends alike.

Probably one of the best museums I’ve visited in my life. There’s so much to cover here starting all the way before Hong Kong even had human inhabitants. There’s two sections on the geography and ecosystems of Hong Kong followed by one section on the inhabitants from the prehistoric era. The sections after that are dedicated to the modern times going from pre-colonial to colonial to Chinese rule. Overall the exhibits are exhaustive and well detailed. In addition to all this good stuff. It’s 100% free.

An interesting experience that tells of Hong Kong's history. There was also an exhibit on Jinyong's wuxia novels when I was here as well. I really appreciate the breadth of the type of works available on view and the exhibits seem well curated and thought out. Note: Visited prior to Covid, so things may be a little different.

When we went there, they had two sections (Hong Kong history and something about Afghanistan). We only went to the Hong Kong exhibition. They guide you through the complete history of Hong Kong. Starting with the geological events that led to the landscape and ending with the modern day Hong Kong. It is explained really well and entertaining. For example, they build a small city displaying a Hong Kong in the early 20th century. The entrance is free and everything is in English as well.

Comprehensive exhibition trying to explain the phenomenon of modern Hong Kong. Starting fro. the geological processes, through nature we are observing development of humans. Archaeological sites, historical sites of power, ethnographic groups of hongkongers... On the first floor development of HK after 'British invasion' under 'occupation' and happy 'return to the Mainland'. You clearly can understand who paid for this exhibition... But overall really good.

Took like 4 hrs to get through this free history that covers the entire period from the formation of the earth until about 2000. It left me curious to fill in more details. The descriptions were very well done and the artifacts were cool and the videos were good. It wasn’t crowded and it was a comfortable temperature.

(Translated by Google) From the formation of the ancient land, you can learn various things, including the culture and customs of about 30 years ago. There are English explanations, and you can enjoy just by looking at the exhibits. A few hours is not enough. I'm not tired of seeing it all day. Although there are some corners of the Japanese occupation era that are difficult for Japanese people to see, I recommend you to watch them without looking away. Admission is cheaper than that of Japan.

The HONG KONG STORY permanent exhibit is top class and a great way to understand Hong Kong for both locals and visitors. Unfortunately it is closed for the next two years (till 2022?) for major makeover. Hope they tell the same true and genuine Hong Kong story as it had been.

A great museum to spend around 3 hours to understand Hong Kong from the past until now. There are fantastic real sized models and setting to bring us into the time tunnel to see people living on the boats, near the sea, who celebrated main festivals. There are also very detailed descriptions on photos and replicas and real things about the wars, merchants, banks, currencies, etc. It's unbelievable that there is no entrance fee for this wonderful museum! It's open from Monday to Sunday except Tuesday is closed.

If you are a fan of Bruce Lee and/ or martial arts, you must go to museum. Well laid out, interactive and it is free. I hear they are getting rid of this museum to make a science museum which a big mistake. If you love HK, its people and culture or just curious ( or have kids) you want to go. Public transportation not really an option so cab it. You are not paying for admission so splurge. The pop culture exhibit which had film and music was fun !

Love visiting the free 'Hong Kong Story' exhibit. There's 3 floors. I would highly recommend. It goes from the geographical forming of the country, to the cave men times through to the emperor rulings and the different types of Chinese clans who settled in Hong Kong, to the Opium war and Japanese occupation to current day Hong Kong.

The best place to learn about the natural environment and history of Hong Kong. The museum is located next to the Science Museum. Admission to the permanent exhibition is free. Special exhibitions require additional tickets, which can be paid with an Octopus card. The service desk provides free luggage storage. It is recommended to store larger luggage and backpacks for comfortable viewing of the exhibition. The souvenir department sells diversified products, including postcards and stamps for collection. The permanent exhibition begins with an introduction to the geological history of Hong Kong, to the natural environment and flora and fauna of Hong Kong, prehistoric humans, historical development and historical sites after written records, development from the Qing Dynasty to modern times, and development after the return to China. In addition, there are displays of Hong Kong's humanities and folk culture, including ordinary people's life and economic development. There are many small movie theaters in the exhibition hall, with pronunciations in Chinese, Cantonese and English. The special exhibition I saw this time was the "Luxury Generation-From Assyria to Alexandria" hosted by the British Museum. The first stop was exhibited in Hong Kong. Tickets cost only HK$10. The exhibition venue provides timed guided tours and audio guides. The exhibits are mainly luxurious decorations from the British Museum's collection at that time. The commentary version has a lot of introduction information. There are also 3D interactive multimedia, which can flip specific exhibits at different angles or zoom in to appreciate them in more detail.

(Translated by Google) Although the Hong Kong Story Permanent Exhibition has many shortcomings, it still carries a lot of colonial history in Hong Kong. I am very sorry to hear that the government will significantly reduce the size of the Hong Kong Story Exhibition, which will inevitably affect the content of the exhibition. Starting from October 19th, 2020, the exhibition hall here will be repaired and updated for two years. It will not reopen until October 19, 2022. Before that, Hong Kong people liked this museum very much, Before this exhibition hall was repaired, the exhibition here was very interesting, but the introduction of the exhibition in Hong Kong in the middle and late period was not too detailed. Some parts of the exhibition hall showed the old streets and shops of Hong Kong, but after 2020, CCP decided to make it. False history continues to deceive the world. Hong Kong was once a British colony and a member of the Commonwealth. Hong Kong’s success was established by the leadership of the British and the efforts of the Hong Kong people.Since Hong Kong was invaded by CCP, Hong Kong’s glorious history in the British colony period was erased by CCP.In the future, the exhibition hall will be reopened. The content of the exhibition inside may be false. As a Hong Kong person, I feel that the Hong Kong race is being destroyed.

The Hong Kong Museum of History is a museum that preserves Hong Kong's historical and cultural heritage. It is located next to the Hong Kong Science Museum, in Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The museum was established by the Urban Council in July 1975 when the City Museum and Art Gallery was split into the Hong Kong Museum of History and Hong Kong Museum of Art; some of the Museum of History's collections were on display at the City Museum and Art Gallery's original 1962 location at the City Hall. From 1975 to 1983, the Hong Kong Museum of History was housed in a 700 m2 rented space within Star House. In 1983, the Museum was moved to a temporary location (which now houses Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre) in Kowloon Park. It was moved to its present premises near Hong Kong Science Museum on Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui in 1998. It is currently managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of Hong Kong Government.

Great for a wet day or to beat the heat on warmer day, Hong Kong's history museum is a great place to spend a couple of hours and take in the history of this region. You'll see Hong Kong from the ancient past, through colonial days and at the time of the hand over. About HK$10, or you can buy a multi museum pass and I believe they also have a weekly free entry day as well. For history buffs and fans of museums this is a good place to visit.

It is a small exhibit of HK history.. not a Museum.. rather boring. There security guards everywhere. There can't touch the exhibit that in middle of room even there is no security barrier surrounding. Thankfully it's free.

The new exhibit (2022) is still temporary. However the story of Hong Kong no longer suggest that it ended with 1997. I look forward to seeing the upgrades; the first 25 years of the handover and even the projections of the future of Hong Kong in the GBA and in China.

This review is based on my visit a few years back. I have been to quite a few history museums in different countries, and the Hong Kong museum is by far the most boring of the lot... There are a total of 8 exhibits about Hong Kong's History, and about 3 to 4 of the exhibits are just talking about ROCKS! ROCKS AND PEBBLES THAT CAN BE FOUND IN HONG KONG IN THE PAST 10000000000YEARS..... The other 4 exhibits are more interesting where they feature houses of old Hong kong, cultures, diplomats stuff etc. All of these are far more interesting than ROCKS AND PEBBLES. So, if you have time to spend or if you have a deep fond love for ROCKS, you can come to the hong kong museum of history. If not, you can fast forward to exhibit 4-8 where there are no ROCKS involved. based on other reviewers' comments, seems like there is maintenance project for this museum. Hope the museum will come back with more interesting exhibits other than ROCKS.

If you are someone who love history, this place is worth the visit. It’s very educational and it’s free. You will easily spend a minimum of 3 hrs here to learn about The Hong Kong Story. This museums is huge and it covers the history of geological to the habitats, the folk culture, the Opium Wars and the Japanese Occupation to name the few. They also have a few Theatre/Video Shows in Chinese, Cantonese and English and my favourite are ’From Trade to War’ and The Japanese Occupations - ‘Three Years and Eight Months’. If you have the time, come visit here. Children will love it too.

A museum about Hong Kong history. Some information of last century served for those in power. Be wise and clever, get the truth from diversive angle.

The updated Hong Kong Story still has lots of see. Good for older children. Younger children (my kids aged 1 and 3) may not enjoy too much as exhibits mostly not allowed to touch or sit on.

It’s really interesting to visit HongKong Museum of History. It’s touch my heart when watching the documentary film of the traditional ceremony and the war. You can also immerse in the memorial scenes of Hongkongers, also a nearby country’s residents that had seen so many TVB films. I saw there were some old Hongkongers walking around and reminiscing the old days. It was a beautiful moment. —- Also, the ticket is free for the permanent exhibition.

The exhibition is worth a visit if you want to learn about the history of Hong Kong. It is free. However, it is quite disappointing that they currently only have the simplified version. I was told the renovations will take another year or two. They also have daily tours (in Cantonese) where volunteers give a more in depth explaination of the exhibition. The sign up was quick and easy, I just needed to go to the front desk and get a ticket. There are also tours in Mandarin and English, but it seems to only be provided on the weekends.
