Mau’mae ridge is a great 6.2 mile roundtrip to the top (Kainawa’anui) and back. People call it the Lanipo hike, but actually Lanipo peak needs a little crossover to the south to be reached. It is a great trail if you want a little bit more then just a “walk in the park”, and if you really want to elevate the experience try to trail run it. The first half it’s dryer and the footing it’s easier, but second half can be more overgrown, more muddy and more technical. On the top you have beautiful views of the Windward side and Honolulu side too, if weather is permitting. Happy trails!

Even though we could not complete the whole hike, it was an amazing experience. The entrance to the trail was a bit hard to find at first. There was a surprising variety of vegetations that kept changing as we proceeded. It was the beginning of June so we we're lucky to find a lot of strawberry guavas to snack on. Second half of the trail is quite muddy so you need good shoes.

Only about 10 minutes in and you can see the whole valley and city. The bench is right under a mile away. But the hike goes all the way and connects to mount Olympus

Amazing. Much harder than I anticipated. Took us 7 hours round trip. Got rained on a bit coming down and that probably slowed us down. Like everyone else said LONG PANTS. They are a must. You will be miserable without. Also consider micro spikes. We didn’t have them but they would have helped a bit. Some sections are quite muddy. Not impassable but messy for sure.

I consider this beautiful trail as moderate to hard. This is probably the longest trail we did. It took us 3 1/2 hours all the way to the top total of 7hrs. Weather was nice, not muddy. Lots of water is a must especially when sunny day.

Moderately difficult from the physical aspect, but no technical difficulties. Lots of ups and downs. No need to bring microspikes unless it is very wet. The views are nice, but not stupendous (at least relative to some other Oahu trails). Nice view of Ka'au crater from mid-hike, and nice view of the windward coast from the top. You can extend the hike by hiking up the KST southbound to true Lanipo peak.

The views of the two valleys are awesome! I don’t believe this trail is maintained because some parts have overgrown with brush. Parking wasn’t bad just make sure your not impeding on the residents. It’s a ridge hike so some parts are dangerous and not easy. Sunscreen and water are a must. Have fun be safe.

The first two thirds of this trail are a rolling ridge with spectacular views of Waikiki, diamond head and Pālolo Valley. The last third (or maybe it's half?) of this trail is a muddy ascent into the heavens. The summit is often beclouded, but if you go on a sunny, clear day the views of Waimanalo and Kailua are second only to the Stairway to Heaven. And this trail is legal to hike on.

I am fairly out of shape so this trail was grueling for me, but the peaceful environment and breathtaking views made it all worth while. Wear pants because this trail will wreak havoc on your shins. And wear shoes with good traction - even when there's no mud there are near-vertical climbs that require sturdy foot placement. Do NOT attempt to cross over westward from the summit towards Mount Olympus, as there are several perilous and treacherous cliffs disguised with tall grass and no braches to grab hold of, which had my heart pounding with fear (not in a fun way). We're talking one tumble in either directiob and you WILL fall to your death. Well worth the adventure overall, just be careful! Took me five hours roundtrip.

The trail is quite steep. Make sure to wear proper shoes and take water with you. We were not prepared for such an interesting trail and had to turn back after the first couple of hundreds of meters as it was misting and the trail was too slippery to hike with kids without proper boots. The views even from the beginning of the trail were astonishing. We spotted a Buddhist temple close to the mountain an continued our day there instead.

Beautiful views just a short walk (5-10 minutes) from the street parking available. The trails can get quite muddy and slippery after a rainfall, but it's totally worth it. The beginning of the trail is within a residential neighbourhood, please be respectful of your surroundings.

Stunning, steep, and rugged. Came in with a group, so I'm not sure if there's easy public parking, as I didn't see any on the way in.

Great hike. It's pretty challenging with a lot of rocks. The views are incredible though. Highly recommend!

Great trail, rather shady and medium difficulty(sporty 7yo in Crocs did it in ~4 hours)! Son&me liked it greatly. Rather muddy (light rain started and stopped 3 times) so take additional pants for traveling back on a bus - my son was very-very dirty at the end🤪🫣

Epic hiking a lot. Incredible views. A bit sketchy so be vigilant in some spots.

Mau'umae Trail was breathtaking views. We're lucky, just perfect sunny day with some clouds and breeze! Loved it, highly recommended who's like challenging hike. (Not for kids or dogs for sure) Be careful and take it easy! It's a ridge hiking with narrow path and some steep as well, so be prepared for this beautiful Nature 💚

Even if you climb just a little bit, you can enjoy a great view. However, it was scary when it was windy.
