Kona was super active, healthy, and playing with his family his last day on Earth. We took him to @verchawaii on referral because they're the only vet oncologists on the island and he had a mysterious irritating bump on his nose. We explained that we wanted nothing invasive and to just sooth his bump so that he could have quality life years as a 10 year old golden. They didnt respond to our questions and said a swab and biopsy (the biopsy they didnt even do because he died before that, still cost $4k) is necessary since "it's the only way to find out what kind of medication to issue him." We were thinking maybe they're going to give us a topical at the end. We never even found out that he had cancer. They put him under full sedation and he never woke up. We didn't even sign a consent form for anesthesia. There was no discussion of alternatives and risks. They didn't give us any explanations as to why they're doing what they're doing (full sedation vs. local anesthetic). I didn't realize the extent of the risk. I now know that a surface level biopsy does not require full anesthesia. We didn't sign a DNR so they were wasting time calling us and waiting for what to do while Kona was dying. I know he had so much life left in him had we not trusted these experts. A life needlessly cut short. I'm sharing this because after I shared Kona's story with a few friends, it seems to me VERC vets have a history of just sending invoices to clients and ignoring client requests for explanation or discussion of care. If only they didn't have a monopoly here in Hawaii they'd be out of business.

TRUST THE BAD REVIEWS. Do NOT go here. One star is partly because I have to but also for the awesome, super friendly vet tech. Zero stars for the oncologist. Unfortunately I didnā€™t heed the warnings of the other poor reviews. Hopefully this will help someone elseā€™s baby. Take your dog somewhere else if you need cancer treatment PLEASE. We just moved here from Utah and had our first appointment at this office and Iā€™m extremely disappointed with the oncologist at VERC. They did not follow the treatment plan provided by my previous primary oncologist and decided to go their own route. My dog was kept for 4 hours and I was told after the fact about everything that was done. Iā€™ve never had such a horrible experience and weā€™ve been going through these types of appointments for months now. I did not authorize anything extra, this was not an emergency situation where they could do whatever was necessary. They could have AT LEAST let me know what they needed to do, that wasnā€™t included in our original plan. I had an appointment and treatment plan, which should have been followed and wasnā€™t. They also decided to change a bunch of things about her treatment plan. It didn't feel like they cared about my dog, I felt like this office cares more about the money and they can do whatever they want because the only oncologist in Hawaii is at this office. I didnā€™t even get any of her results or testing info or discharge instructions. Just a very expensive bill with no answers. The money isnā€™t what mattered to me, it was the unprofessionalism. The nice receptionist and great vet tech do NOT make up for the poor service. I had to call and email just to get the info I shouldā€™ve gotten when I left, if not shortly after. Unfortunately, options for chemo are scarce here but I will be searching for another place to go. If you care about the well being of your animal PLEASE find a different oncologist. Update: visited another animal hospital ONE DAY later for a UTI, which had gotten to the point there was blood in her urine. Wondering how this wasnā€™t caught during our visit to VERC. I canā€™t stress enough, please go somewhere else. After doing some research there are many different options for chemo management, despite what they tell you. Please try VCA family and Veterinary or Feather and Fur Animal hospital to see if they are able to help you before you waste valuable time and money at VERC. Update: while visiting a new vet, we discovered that there wasnā€™t even any urinalysis results included in the record. Multiple calls to VERC went unanswered. I was also told by our new vet that you CAN have blood work done at your primary vet 24/48 hours prior to seeing your oncologist, and have the results sent to them. (Which I had been doing already in our previous state of residence) I was told by the oncologist at VERC that you ā€œcanā€™t do thatā€ because the primary vets ā€œwouldnā€™t be comfortableā€ with that. Yet, here I am being told by the primary vet that that is okay and they do it often. It just further proves that VERC cares more about the money than the well being of your pet. Please PLEASE go somewhere else. I really hope this helps at least one other baby get the help that they need.

After taking my puppy in with concerns for PARVO I was told that if the test was negative I didnā€™t have to follow up with a physical exam. I asked not to but the tech said that I had ā€œalready paid for it with the test.ā€ So even though I knew my dog didnā€™t need a physical exam, they gave him one anyways and charged me an additional $150. The doctor also recommended many treatments for possible but not probable issues with my puppy which may seem thorough to some, but to me just seemed like a convenient way to rack up my bill. I agree with other reviews, this place capitalizes on being a monopoly to just get money!

The ER doc (Dr Ortiz)couldnā€™t diagnose her. Basically said that an MRI was the only way to tell but that it was so expensive it probably wasnā€™t worth it. Our dog was seen by a neurologist but it was the ER doc communicating with us. She suspected it was cancer and that an MRI was the only way to tell but they doubt they could treat it so she advised us to just think of how to ā€œmake her comfortable.ā€ We explained that our dog only fell ill the last two weeks and that apart from losing control over her legs she is happy and eating so we were not prepared to hear that our only option was to put her down. The doc was short with us, eager to get off the phone. We asked her to include whatever findings she could in her write up as we had Nationwide insurance to file and she said ā€œI already explained this to you, I canā€™t diagnose so I have nothing to write.ā€ So of course our $700+ claim got denied and needs to be resubmitted for lack of information. Youā€™d think that docs could be more gracious especially dealing with this during the holidays. Instead we were treated like our dog was a burden and because they couldnā€™t figure out what was wrong with her, that it was a waste to try.

I lost my word .. Iā€™m really tired to write this issues My daughter was passed away by hospital injections I asked questions them but they never answer but after adding google they sent to me email and this Owners commentā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ What happened this hospital I can not imagine what they did for my small puppy Iā€™ll post and share little by little because it was too much sad story My dog got injection without promising I got email ā†“ ā€œDr. Bourke said that you had requested treatments so that you could take Yui home since testing and hospitalized treatment was not possible for you. Dr. Bourke had given Yui the injection of Cerenia to help prevent further vomiting and attempt to make her more comfortable. Cerenia is an anti-vomiting medication. Dr. Bourke reported that Yui was very sick when she was seen at our hospital and given your concerns about the costs, she attempted to try to make Yui as comfortable as possible. The cerenia injection is a very safe medication and the dose that was given was good for Yui. It was not the Cerenia that caused Yui to pass away. I know it can be very frustrating not knowing exactly what happened to cause her to die. I can tell you that whatever was causing her collapse, weakness, vomiting, and illness the previous week/day is what caused her death, not the medication that she was given here at the hospital. Dr. Bourke was trying to make her as comfortable as possible. Her treatments for taking Yui home were very appropriate and the same as what I would have given. I tried resolving my issues with VERC internally but instead was blamed for being confused and only received a minor refund for the treatment plan that they essentially coerced me into as they did not give me any other options. So unfortunately, I feel obligated to share about my experience here as I do not feel they sufficiently addressed it with me personally. Had a horrible experience with VERC. They donā€™t even let you talk to the vet, only the technicians, until AFTER you made the decision for a treatment plan, which is an egregious protocol. Itā€™s like going to the hospital and only talking to the nurses up until the operation and only talking to the doctor AFTER youā€™ve been operated on. Would you feel comfortable with that? I wouldnā€™t. They also donā€™t supply enough information to help you make an informed decision, and then they blame it on the customer for ā€œmiscommunicationā€ and ā€œconfusion.ā€ It seems absolutely insane that theyā€™re charging $170 just for the consult fee (excluding the additional medications and services) for you just to talk to technicians, and we were talking to a technician *IN TRAINING* at that. So if you want sub-par, ill-informed emergency vet care, VERC can supply that. A waste of $340 dollars. In addition, our cat was there for 5 hours and they did not let him use the litter box so he was extremely stressed and peed everywhere in my car once I got him back into my care. Front desk service is great, but VERCā€™s protocol in how they donā€™t let vets interact with patients until after you decide on what care to do is ridiculous and absurd. In all of my experiences with vets, the vet themselves talk to you about available options before making a decision, where they also inform you of things to consider. We werenā€™t given that courtesy. Plus, we werenā€™t even given more than one option to consider. We were just offered one option and I had to ASK MYSELF if there were others. The technician also wrongly informed me of the cost of a treatment. Beware, they will scam you out of your hard-earned money here. Challenge everything they say and ask for exact cost breakdowns before you decide on treatment. I wish I had. Iā€™m also informing all of my friends and family who have pets to beware of this facility. In response to your response: I was *not* offered any other options apart from inducing emesis until I asked. And when I asked, I was not given a thorough response. How is that even a standard protocol where you donā€™t offer more than one option for treatment?? In addition, I was not offered to talk to the vet at all. All that was mentioned about the vet was that the technician talked to the vet and was relaying what the vet prescribed. When I asked about the option of no further treatment, the vet was brought up again as another consult but I was not given the option to talk to the vet myself like mentioned in the ownerā€™s response. I donā€™t know if these calls are recorded but youā€™ll find that everything Iā€™m saying is what happened. I know VERC is using the notes the technician wrote down on what she thought she communicated, whereas Iā€™m telling you what was actually communicated to me. It seems frustrating that youā€™re doubling down on your stance that nothing wrong happened beyond the incorrect quote when you clearly have multiple negative reviews surrounding client dissatisfaction. What kind of business only focuses on the positive reviews?

VERC is a terrible place to bring an animal. They have a culture of disdain for customers and do not care about animals. With an emergency, you are better off waiting and taking your pet to a veterinarian with a heart. They are disorganized with poor communication between reception, vet techs and vets.

This vet is very good with how to get your money, but somehow unable to give accurate medical follow-up and diagnosis. The Director of the facility is not capable of being accountable for the inaccuracies in their financial charges. They demanded payment immediately and took 2 days to refund me the money they overcharged me. Terrible experience. If you do not want stress when dealing with a sick pet. I would not recommend this place.

I have never taken an animal to this clinic and after my interaction with a receptionist today, I never will. My cat is suddenly sick and we were informed that she may need an endoscopy done. We were told this clinic is only 1 of 2 that are capable of doing the procedure on island. I called to see if I could get a rough estimate. The receptionist was unkind for absolutely no reason, "WHY ARE YOU CALLING US? WE DON'T GIVE ESTIMATES! WHO TOLD YOU TO CALL US?" Thanks but no thanks, we'll seek care elsewhere should it come to that. It doesn't cost you anything to be kind and empathetic.

The legacy of Koa. My baby was 12 years old and had a string of surgeries from another vet which he didn't recover from. I chose VERCs Dr. Ortiz to help him with his transition. Loving, caring, compassionate staff from beginning to end. Thank you for giving him the chicken and lamb baby food so he had the energy to cross over. So much love for you all. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Thank you for saving bandits life. Poor thing was in ICU for 3 days. He is very codependent due to losing his mom as a baby. He is also timid, afraid, and vocal. The vet supervised my visitation because he was so withdrawn in the hospital. She said he needed to leave the hospital ASAP, that the environment wasn't good for him. it's because the doctor suspected abuse and neglect at home. He ran to me, and that changed her mind. She then excused herself because she had other pets to triage. You can say they are too expensive, and you're not wrong. But the paragraph above should show you that they do care. If bandit has another emergency, I'll pay a little more and take him to VERC, because that spoke volumes about their character. Thank you, VERC.

Brought my husky here for an oncology appointment and was very impressed from start to finish. Reception checked me in immediately, the techs called for my history and my pup was inside right away. Dr Fenger was absolutely wonderful, informative, patient and thorough. She sent a detailed report and went over all options and answered all of my questions. I canā€™t thank the VERC team enough for the time, professionalism and hope for our girl.

The other night when I came home my puppy Sunny had began gagging and suddenly shaking a lot. In a panic I googled 24 hour vet near me and this clinic popped up. We rushed her there and she was immediately assessed and tests were ran. We were told that she has pneumonia and will be put on antibiotics. She remained in their care for two days and finally got to come home today. She is feeling so much better, as her symptoms have greatly subsided. Sunny is our whole world and we are forever grateful for the staff for working so hard and remaining open 24 hours a day.

If you require specialty care, especially an internist, this is where to go. Always open, very thorough, up-front regarding your loved ones condition, treatment options & so much more! The doctor is VERY thorough in explaining EVERYTHING to you, making sure you understand EVERYTHING that is/could be or starting to occur with your baby. What your options are, expected outcomes of treatment & a PLAN for treatment. One that grows with the progress of your fur baby. Not just something 'for the moment' - but a PLAN of ACTION for treatment, welfare & life of your baby for the best possible life they can have. If you've EVER taken your little one to a 'general veterinary' facility (I'll go ahead & name one - VCA) & weren't really given what you might have thought to be quite the right explanation/diagnosis, yet went along with their suggestion of 'we're going to start with these medications...' only to find 2 or 3 months later they suggest a higher dose or different medication, guessing, basically - follow your instincts - LEAVE THEM IMMEDIATELY! Go to PetVet (open to all) or VERC (they're by referral only) but GET ONE! It could mean the difference between a happy, healthy life - or unnecessary pain & suffering from misdiagnosis & mistreatment by the other vet. I live in Waianae & I will ALWAYS drive to Ala Moana for VERC and Salt Lake for PetVet over the docs at VCA any day! I've suffered the all too early loss of three of my children to the misdiagnosis, mistreatment, and 'quick fix, bandaid solution' approach of those guys - & they aren't cheap for the 'service' either! I SWEAR to this day, they killed my 3 kids through neglect, misdiagnosis, mistreatment & an apparent 'desire' to just 'send us on our way'. I tried to get my babies medical records (I had planned on filing a malpractice case) & when I inquired to get copies of their records, they claimed they had 'no record of any such pet or record in those names'. They had 'never been seen' & basically didn't exist. I firmly believe they 'destroyed' - or to be more polite -'misplaced/lost' the records. Yet they remain adamant they'd never seen any of my kids. At that time, they were the only vet I knew, came well recommended, & the doctor who founded VCA was still involved with the business. Him I liked. Yet they remain adamant - no records, never treated. I regret I had to make a last ditch, urgent emergency trip that led me back to them in Kapolei! They basically gave my baby a shot of calcium & sent her home with HOSPITAL-TYPE care instructions! I was treating her! They didn't even perform the requisite procedure for her given condition (I researched it b4 going in - the doc just ho-hummed & walked off when I addressed it). We were in & out in less than 1-1/2 hours, paid over $500 for substandard care!! If anything like that happens again, and I can keep my babies alive and well long enough to get to someplace other than VCA, that's where I'll go. Feather and Fur is also a 24 hour facility and is a promising place to go. So is the Waianae Vet but hours are limited. But back to the point: if in doubt about the treatment you're offered - FOLLOW YOUR GUT! You know your babies better than the docs (especially you-know-who docs). Don't get me wrong. Years ago they were great, now, not so. The front staff & technicians are on point, but the docs just seem to be preoccupied with something better to do/somewhere else to be. PetVet & VERC are exceptional. You'll know how good the docs are based on just how much time they spend & how many questions they ask. The thoroughness of the exam, the detailed, personal follow-up phone calls with results & findings & any other recommendations. If they're REALLY worth their salt, when they come across something just outside their realm of expertise/treatment, or even SUSPECT something else might be going on they can't tackle, they'll refer you to a SPECIALIST. QUALITY of service is what you want, not QUANTITY of trips. Take care of your babies. They love you & depend on you.

We got an emergency referral from our primary veterinarian, and were able to have our cat seen at VERC within a couple hours of the referral. Staff were very kind and helpful, and the doctor helped us choose a conservative treatment option with plans if anything goes wrong in the future! As with people hospitals, you definitely wait and pay extra for emergency pet treatment. Both were within normal expectations, and we're very fortunate to have this clinic on island!

Have gone here 4-5 times- people r professional, kind, understanding- I think people sometimes forget that this is a business; people have to get paid, rent has to b paidā€¦etc. itā€™s not easy working in a place where our loved animals r patients! And, letā€™s face it everywhere is expensive for pet care! The places that r cheaper, good luck in getting an appointment that day- oh yeah, thereā€™s always walk- ins (that is if you got 2-3 hours to wait). If ur pet is in need of medical care, call this place! You will b thankful you did! I have two dogs- 11 & 1yrs old. This place is great!! Thank you!

Our family has had positive experiences with VERC. Last year, our dog had torn ligaments in both knees. VERC scheduled us quickly for a surgical consultation with Dr. Bruecker. He was very kind and explained everything thoroughly. We felt like our dog was in experienced hands. She had two surgeries in total, each a month apart, and her recovery was much faster than anticipated. We had multiple visits to VERC throughout the pre- and post-surgery process. The vet techs and front staff are always polite and friendly. The only critique is that a few times, we wouldn't get a call back when we had questions. We visited VERC recently for an emergency. Again, everyone was very polite and compassionate. Our dog was seen in a relatively short time. The emergency veterinarian was very thorough, knowledgable and communicated clearly. We're grateful that this team is available for our emergency and speciality needs.

Saw Dr Fenger today for my catā€™s cancer. She is outstanding! I expressed my concerns and she listened and provided some other options for me. She didnā€™t press for unnecessary testing or screening that would have wasted my money and I appreciate that. I am so happy my sick cat is in her care! Nice facility and not that bad a location to get to from the West side even in traffic.

The service here was wonderful. We came in after 6pm for an emergency and the staff responded promptly. My only concern is that when we called prior to arriving, the call did not go through. Nevertheless, I am so grateful to the front desk and especially the veterinarians here at VERC for all their help.

4 hour emergency visitā€¦observed for 4 hours, only to be told nothingā€™s wrong with our dog, despite coming in with a 104 degree feverā€¦no blood test, no nothing tests to see what was causing her fever, light panting, (said probably because of hospital anxiety??)$200 visit. The next day our vet found out she has disk herniation in her back, a muscle injury/sprain, ear infectionā€¦why didnā€™t VER tell us that after 4 hours and a sleepless night because of discomfort?? The staff is friendly and the Nimitz location is top notch, but not in evaluation, tests or care.

Very disappointed with the negligence of their own staff and miscommunication that I experienced. I was referred to them to do an ultrasound for what seemed to be a suspected abdominal mass on my dog. my primary vet had scheduled an oncology appointment at the same time in case I needed it pending the ultrasound results. Ultrasound was done quickly and I was told that the radiologist would not speak to me and that results/report would be sent to my primary vet. 5 days went by and my vet couldnā€™t access the report through their portal so I had to call so they could send it to my vet and myself personally. After reading the report my vet had said this looks to be more internal medicine than oncology but if they are separate specialties, to schedule separate consults. I had scheduled an internal medicine consult the day after the (already) scheduled oncology consult because I didnā€™t know which one I needed (i didnā€™t care about paying for them) if i didnā€™t need the internal medicine appointment, i could just cancel it. I was called the week before saying that the oncology technician looked at my report and she says it doesnā€™t look to be internal medicine and they had advised me to ā€œcancel my internal medicine appointment because this is an oncology caseā€ I asked what if itā€™s not? and they assured me that I didnā€™t need both appointments and that they could talk amongst each other. Come to my oncology appointment, the oncologist took one look at the report and said this is internal medicine? this isnā€™t my scope of work you need to see internal medicine personally. Of course my previously scheduled appointment was given away (because iā€™m pretty sure thatā€™s why they canceled, to give it away) and now i donā€™t know how long iā€™d wait. No managers were available of course so they waived my consult fee and sent me on my way ā€œthatā€™s all they could doā€ the same scheduling coordinator that advised me to cancel my appointment called to reschedule the internal medicine appointment that I, in fact, DID NEED and the soonest they could get me in was another week away. Speaking to manager after manager they were nice but all they could tell me was ā€œthatā€™s all we can doā€ ā€œweā€™re sorry we understand how frustrating it isā€ when in reality it turns out that the technician who advised me to cancel my appointment ONLY read my referral which was for a suspected ā€œabdominal massā€ but she didnā€™t look at the IN HOUSE ultrasound report that she had full access to and made that decision by herself. had she looked at the ultrasound report and read it, as i did, she would have immediately knew not to cancel it. every manager including the director agreed with me and all they could do is say ā€œweā€™re sorryā€ and ā€œweā€™ll do better next timeā€ i received a phone consult from the internal medicine doctor she came up with the results to do a laparoscopic surgery. I informed her that I would be getting a second opinion elsewhere before going through with that and iā€™m glad I did because we didnā€™t need to go through with it. The stress and runaround could have been easily avoided had it not been for their poor work ethics. A technician made a call that was not theirs to make and they wasted weeks worth of time which my dog and I paid the price for.

Six weeks ago my dog Barkley was attacked by a Rottweiler. When I saw the extent of his injuries, I thought I would lose him. I took him to VERC around 10pm that night. They were open, took him in, and got to work. It was a long painful journey, but the vets and staff at VERC brought him back to me. They have been so kind to us. Dr Chen explained all I needed to know as Barkley slowly recovered. I feel like she took a personal interest in healing my little boy. We have been coming in 2 times a week and now when I tell him "we are going to the vet", he wags his tail and hops in the car- he never did this before! When we walk in, he is greeted by the staff as an old friend. Barkley and I are so grateful to them.

My dog was very sick and did not survive. The staff was compassionate and walked me through the diagnosis and prognosis for treatment as well as chance of success with surgery. I am happy with the efforts of Dr Ortiz and her team to help my dog. Recommend.

I'm going to start off with a big THANK YOU, and ask for forgiveness if I've renamed anyone, i'm notorious for this. Our dog Grace was referred to the VERC for liver failure, and our hearts were heavy. THANK YOU Brian for greeting our Grace with kindness she went with you without hesitation. THANK YOU to the front desk ladies for all the empathy and compassion, we could hear it in your voice. THANK YOU to Beth and Maggie for making us feel as if Grace was your family too. Your insight into her day and routine really helped us to leave her each day, as we knew she was being loved and looked after with the best of care. THANK YOU to Dr. Lum for the updates and care you provided to our Grace. THANK YOU to Dr. Dean for the updates, and you really put our mind at ease when you said you got into the evidence (literature), this let us know you weren't giving up, and continue to search for answers. THANK YOU to Dr. Cruikshank for all the phone calls to walk us/me off the edge, helping to arrange visitations with Grace (Dr. Lum and Dean also), and ultimately for keeping a shared vision of bring Grace home. God Bless You All, The Theel Family

My dog received great care here after being gored twice by pigs. Not the fastest care because dogs with more severe injuries are prioritized but everyone was very kind and went above and beyond to make my girl and I feel comfortable.

I see a lot of other comments complaining about costs. Treatments can be expensive, but that's why they are the pros and we just take our animal companions in. It's their professionalism. Complaining about the cost is like throwing dirt at their professionalism. I took my cat Nobu in, and everyone that we spoke wptonwere so kind and caring. The numerous follow ups to just the genuine care about my cat made me grateful that they were there open on New Years when we took Nobu in. From Dr. C, Dr. S, and everyone involved thank you for taking care of or little feline family. Truly appreciate everyone there!

The staff is very efficient and professional. They are currently doing curb side drop off due to Covid but you can park across from the doors and wait. That being said discharge took over 2 hours from the time I was told they were going to discharge my pet to the time they brought her out. Also it was very expensive.... I'd expected as much, this being Hawaii and so many factors pushing the cost of living up and what have you.

My dog passed over night. I'm grateful the VERC is 24hr as I was there at 6am. There was responsive and took in my dog for cremation ($111). Mahalo.

I was very grateful for the friendly and calm response to my frantic call about our dog coming into contact with a Bufo frog tonight. Seeing her foaming at the mouth shook me, and I was very very grateful for the staff at VERC who helped me with driving directions to the clinic and took Mochi right in for analysis. The doctor called as we waited and was wonderful in explaining how our dog was doing and other possible symptoms to watch for in the future.

We needed an ER vet ASAP and all the ERs had 4-6 hour long waits! Veterinary Emergency + Referral Center welcomed us in right away. I was so relieved. They were kind, caring, and knowledgeable. Harley and Casey and the doctor were so sweet. Thank you for taking care of Lucas today šŸ’™

šŸ«¤ I have taken my animals to Kalihi Pet Clinic for years. Dr Lau was down-home, efficient, thorough and amazing! Dr Obara is friendly, but his system is set up like a high speed Dr's office. I don't like having to speak only to a tech. I'm paying for a Dr ($1300 in the last week alone) I want to speak...

šŸ‘šŸ‘ My boxer mastiff Prince has natural honey on his bandaged wound and it is regenerating his muscle & tissue growth. This is the best approach for and older dog, and we hope to avoid surgery. Its a natural way to heal. He loves his doctor and aunties at the hospital. If you like a place with people...

šŸ‘šŸ‘ They seem to genuinely love animals here. I brought in a feral cat with a cut and they took me in even though walk-in time was over. They are very decently priced too. Definitely will be back.
