When I was in elementary school in 1963-1965 we were terrified by this thing. We were convinced that some kind of child-snatching ghoul lived up in there and to make it worse, it could look down upon the elementary school and watch us all the time from its tower. Kids made bets to run up and touch it and run away. I wonder if all these decades later the kids still pass that story around.

Not bombed by the Japanese, but they did hit the pipes that supplied water from the tower. The rapid loss of water caused the internal steel tank to collapse. Still a monument, but not used as a water tower today.

Saved in WW2 because it was thought to be a religious shrine.

An excellent landmark that is rich with history that helps to showcase Hickam's legacy. Acting as a beacon on the base, it is the place of several revelries, wing functions and, memorials. A great place to run around, since there are plenty of pedestrian paths to take, without fear of traffic. Stop by and and enjoy the green grass, fresh air and quiet atmosphere.

Really neat looking 30s or 40s style water tower that from a distance is beautiful enough to be mistaken for a lighthouse. The concrete shell houses a metal tank system that crushed when a water main ruptured during the Pearl harbor attacks. Very neat and worth a few minutes to check out.

Beautiful, historic landmark. The Christmas light show was great fun for the family. Plenty of food vendors. Access restricted to military card holders.
