UPDATE (May 2023): This place is still so weird. I love it, with its remnants of WWII and semi-forgotten feel. Restrooms still closed. DEC 2021 : A very strange, and very cool because of it, park that is a lot larger than one would think at first glance. Or, a lot longer. Some very intriguing structures from a recent past, lots of picnic tables and a nice covered area with built-in chessboards on the tables. The restrooms are all still closed (Dec 2021), though there are a few outhouses. Four baseball diamonds with cages, one or two of which are now being re-sodded. Popular for casual fishing, but with an uncertain water quality in the area, catch-and-release seems preferable. Maybe ?

Okay, I give this area four stars. It would be five stars but there is a lot of glass on the beach and overall, this park is not maintained very well. There are a good amount of homeless people here and like a previous reviewer noted, some of them enjoy sunbathing naked on the beach. You’ve been warned. Now, the interesting part of this island is it has a rich history, some of it being not so good. Sand island used to be known as quarantine island. Ships would be required to port here who were though to have passengers with illnesses. In WW2, however, this became a location for an interment camp for Japanese Americans, who were sent here often without cause or due process. In March of 1943 the camp was closed and all detainees were sent to either mainland camps or a more inland camp on Oahu. In 1945 this became a POW camp until the end of WW2.

It’s ok. Large park with flat areas, hilly areas, and shady areas. Lots of space for activities and lots of parking. You can apparently camp here but I don’t know if you’d want to. There are a lot of stray cats and homeless people. The facilities could do with some upgrades as well.

Nice, quite park not really taken care of anymore but if what you’re looking for is quite with NO Crowds, this is the place for you. Grass is cut, restrooms are locked but there are portable toilets. Fishing, swimming, & clean

This State Park has a little bit of everything, for a day visit or even for an hour. You can stop in and eat your lunch in the first parking lot, or spend a day with friends, family, or just by yourself and your fur baby, but be sure to have a required leash on your canine kids, as there are many feline friends living in the park, in appointed areas, and we wouldn't want them hurt by an unexpected puppy dog, who is just following it's basic instincts. You can go fishing from the shore, on the shore or in the shore. There's surf, there's swimming, there's sunbathing, (even in the nude) , but be sure DLNR aren't around, for citations would be handed out. And most of all, there's plenty of places to enjoy a nice Hawaiian BBQ, or family Cookout, or a Birthday Bash, or to Celebrate a Federal or State Holiday. The views of Aloha Tower and Downtown are just spectacular, at times you can watch Cruise ships coming in to dock, or a wide variety of Ocean going vessels coming in to Honolulu Harbor. At the other end of the park, where the Girls Softball Complex is, there's more secluded areas, and the sunsets are just incredible, a green flash is almost guaranteed. The park is maintained and taken care of by Jerome and his family, and they do an amazing job, and the never ending maintenance and new renovations are constantly improving this gem in the middle of the city, which in itself is very unique and you won't find a better more convenient park anywhere in the USA. I highly recommend a visit here, whether your a local Braddah or sistah, Aunty or Uncle, a kama'aina, or a tourist, Sand Island always delivers. Don't forget the closing times change from 6:45 pm to 7:45 pm after Memorial Day, and back again, after Labor Day. And be sure to adhere to those times, as the gates will be closed promptly. And please help keeping the park clean by throwing your rubbish in the green cans, and any recycleables in the wire buckets near them.

The whole area needs a face lift. Needs new picnic tables and over head cabanas. Place is all red dirt, there is no grass. Bathrooms are under repair.

Nice quiet beach area. Needs to be cleaned up a bit at the park area but otherwise a nice place to visit.

Great, quiet beach. Never crowded and plenty of parking. Seems like all the restrooms are closed but there are port-a-pottys. There are beach showers to rinse off and pavilions scattered about. Great sunsets!

You can go there and have your lunch with no one around.. so, peaceful and relaxing is the thing. I always was thinking about last year around this time, and how I Feeling like more and more... no one really cares about amybody. And it's a dog-eat-dog world.

Pretty views of Honolulu harbor and cruise ships in port. The park itself is not very pretty.

What's the point of the beach park being open if the bathrooms are closed because of their being no water. And portable toilets don't cut it .

I go there to surf...bring a garden hose so you can use a the water spigot to rinse off. There are showers but are further down

Nice park with great views. A bit sketchy with a large homeless population. Be sure to lock your car when you are here. I would recommend going with a few people to mitigate any risk.
