This is a place where there is a museun, but there is a theater in the back! They don't play movies that other theaters play, but they play traditional ones. Like every month they have a theme. Like chinese, japanese, Korean, and other languages you can think of! You can also visit the museum too. I like to go here to watch movies. So I would recommend it if you like to watch traditional movies.

The venue is not too large so there's a nice quaint vibe that come across due to being close to the performers from any location.

We did a documentary screening here with almost 200 people in attendance. The staff was very friendly, professional and accomadating! And the theater is spacious. There's no cell service down there, but one doesn't need to make calls during a film, anyway!

Great little theater kind of tucked away behind the Academy of Arts...my Cousin, Dezmond Gilla had written, directed, and starred in a movie called, "How to Spell Revenge"...and our family and his friends went to watch the screening of it! He did such a great job for his first screenplay...lots of talent in our family. He's already writing another one. Great place for up & coming Film students, Director/Producers to hold screenings like that. Quite comfortable, and they do have an Elevator down to the theater level for easier access for our elderly, and handicapable.

PICK UP YOUR TRASH PEOPLE! You carried it up there, carry it back down. It's not difficult, malama ka 'aina - respect the land. I've done this hike countless times and it's one of my favorites, but when I hiked it the other moring for sunrise, I picked up 2 still warm cups of coffee and the biggest can of energy drink I've ever seen. I am both angry and sad. Whether you live here or you are on your "vacation in paradise", you are capable of not littering. Be the better person, do the right thing.

I didn't realize this would be a Google Maps attraction since the Pillbox Hike itself should cover both pillboxes up on this hike. But since I've been here, I guess I'll make a few remarks. It is quite beautiful up there with a good breeze and you're only a slight bit higher than the first pillbox. Regardless, with the right camera, you can see quite a bit and can take some pretty awesome panoramic pictures atop the pillpox. I did notice that it took a bit of effort to get on top of the concrete pillbox because some of the tourons were sitting right in the way of the lowest point to climb on top. You'd think they'd be either courteous or have the sense enough to realize this spot was exactly where most people climb atop and move but I guess courtesy/sense isn't so common anymore. I guess if you encounter these folks, just climb on top of them. They'll get the hint. :)

Nice quick hike. We did it in the morning which seemed perfect as it's pretty exposed. The first 10 or so minutes are fairly strenuous as the trail starts climbing immediately. But after the first pill box it levels out. Personally I loved the hiking past the pill boxes, but not necessary as views didn't change.

The hike to the second pillbox from the first is only another 3 minutes of walking up. It features another set of decent looking graffiti both outside and in. There are 2 bunkers you can enter and explore, not much but there is a bunch to see. The acoustics inside are nice if you bring a speaker too!

I went to the theater for the first time when they were showing Dekalog. This Polish television series of ten shows played back to back. Each one of the shows highlights one of the ten commandments. The staff was welcoming and friendly. They had bentos for sale at the breaks after each two shows. The seats were so comfortable, it made being there for 12 hours quite an enjoyable experience. It is entirely wheelchair-accessible, and the price of the film's there are more than reasonable. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Every time I have gone to this theater it is a great experience, the last time I went for The Links Movie short called "The Invitation" was wonderful as well!

If you're looking for a fun and cultural activity in Honolulu, the theater is great for you to check out screening of films and documentaries about artists or local communities that would not have been featured in other places. The ticket price is separate from the entrance ticket to the museum. The theater is maintained well and can seat many people comfortably, it does get chilly so bring a light jacket if you don't like strong air conditioning. They also have restrooms and water dispenser within the area do visitors would not have to exit the theater for facilities. During my screening there was a person who uses a wheelchair but he seems to have no issues with accessibility โ™ฟ.

  • 4/5 Frank S. 1 year ago on Google
It's a small theater with wide rows of seating, meaning all seats are close to the screen and have great sightlines. They used to have refreshments pre-Covid, but so far they have not come back.

I love the courtyards most about the Honolulu Museum of Art. Brightly colored Persian tile work and Japanese koi ponds. The Pacific exhibit is exquisite with beautiful artifacts. This museum offers a range of art to suit a variety of interests, including the rotating gallery. Doris Duke Theatre downstairs inspires you with surf films, cultural films, showcases of local documentaries with graffiti artists and O'iwi TV. Get all your culture. Absorb all your community. Coexist with beautiful like-minds people: Art After Dark on last Saturday's offers open air chill spaces and crowded dance party / check out the scene zones. People watching event worthy of throwing on those heels ๐Ÿ‘  Rotating theme makes it fun. Or come alone on a Sunny afternoon. Sit. chill. And be inspired โœจ

Museum run movie theater in the basement at the back of the property. There are sometimes free events sponsored by different organizations but for the most part they charge $12 for screenings, $10 for members. The projection, sound quality, and seat comfort are sub-par to your average movie theater and far below any modern theater like Ward cinema. So i find even when they show rare โ€œfilmsโ€ itโ€™s really just a projection of a blu-ray or some other sub 4k digital format.

Great little theatre now taking much of the place of the torn down Varsity Theater in Moiliili. They sell light beverages and movie snack, but no beer yet (this ainโ€™t Vancouver Portland.) Sad thing is I always forget to check its movie listings. And as a HoMA I get a entry discount too.

Small, intimate no frills art community theater.."old school" seating in type of seats and set up. Cute little snack shop in the foyer. Serves coffee, water, select juices and chips - limited menu...HOWEVER only place on island that serves up artistic films, international films, cultural films, documentaries, etc. ALL year round. Each month is themed with the purpose of dedicating all the films within that month to a certain genre or culture or societal issue, etc. Partner theater and showcase when the HIFF (Hawaii International Film Festival) is in season. Absolutely LOVE this theater, one of the many reasons my husband and I became museum members.

Views are amazing. Hike up isnt too bad unless your completely new to hiking or taking verticallyinclined trails, I'd suggest wearing some all terrain boots lol, it does rain on a daily basis here so it gets slippery. Parking is hard to find and you can only park on the left side of the lanes, which most are "ONE WAYS" ->. You really dont have to wear a coat up you'll end up taking it off. So wear something light, even if it's cold and early it will warm up out, and so will your body from all that movement! I hope this review helped you! Take care. Be safe some ledges are Narrow!!

We came for the concert of Peter Kater yesterday . The gate was closed and people were waiting outside standing. When we were in, the hall was closed, as they were checking the system sound. Inside was freezing, so everyone wanted to buy tea, but they didn't take credit cards. No internet. The musician could not sell his CD due to no connection. For the entire hall there were 36 people and it felt ashamed, as it is very famous musician.

(Translated by Google) A 30 minute walk will take you there. The length is a bit harsh, and sneakers are essential, and on sunny days you have to apply sun cream well. Awesome place to hike and catch an early morning sunrise. Bring flashlights/headlamps if you're navigating the trails before the sun is up. It would definitely be slippery when raining. Many paths snake up the hill to the pillboxes. It's worth it to keep going to pillbox 2.

  • 5/5 Jesse C. 5 years ago on Google
Beautiful hike with amazing views. Try to go on a weekday to avoid crowds and be able to find parking. You can continue past the pillbox on the ridge to a peak at the end. I think the veiw from there is better. There's a way down there too and still walking distance to the trailhead.

Less crowded, more natural and beautiful landscapes. You can hike to pillbox and then go to lanikai beach or kailua beach and enjoy. Both are famous for day BBQ. There are 3 pillbox. All three got same view. The hike to first pillbox is 30 minutes total.

This is one of my favorite hikes. I hadn't been back in over two years and....what happened?! I swear it was not this steep or difficult before. Maybe me not being in as great of shape as before was the only reason...but pretty sure it looked much more steep than before. Probably from all of the rain over the years. Anyway, still a great workout, short, not so sweet and to the point. The pillboxes give you some of the best views on the island.

  • 5/5 Piyush D. 5 years ago on Google
The pillbox hike is not for the faint of the heart. It is a strenuous one and you have to somewhat in shape to attempt it all the way up. The entrance to the hike itself is difficult to locate. Views from the top are spectacular. Parking is not easy to find in the area so don't get disheartened if you spend at least 15 mins to find one.
