I was not sure what I was getting myself into but I gotta say that this was much more then I expected. I was sorta expecting some low key or maybe goulash thing but it wasnt at all. It treated the subject with a very important overview that had me learn more then a few things. It was pretty easy to find if a bit out there in Houston. The price was good and while maybe not a thing for very small kids. I can see this being a place for more mature kids. I went during the week so it was not crowed at all so it gave me time to really look around at everything. If you want a museum unlike anything else anywhere then this is the place.

This museum has way more than you think! I especially liked the fantasy coffins. Great piece of artwork by a man from Ghana. The museum was also a lot bigger than I had originally thought. They have lots of vintage hearses on display and other interesting exhibits. If you are in the area, visit this museum. You won't regret it.

This was such a fascinating and interesting museum! There's a few relics from different celebrities including a pair of shoes Robin Williams wore during RV and a funerary hand out from Dr. King's funeral. There's plenty to read and plenty to lear. Currently, they have an exhibit regarding the shroud of Turin and it was very informative. The git shop lady was an absolute peach!

Awesome museum near Houston, one of the more unique and content-rich ones around here. Not a large place but has a lot of artifacts, weird facts and interesting history around the culture of funeral. Nicely organized and separated into various sections. I'd recommend spending about three hours here, I went for a bit less than two hours and definitely did not have enough time to browse through everything this place had to offer.

Definitely an interesting place to go. Good exhibits and learning information. Took my 14 year old son and walked through in about an hour or so. Worth the money for admission of $10 person.

Amazing place that had a lot of great information! Only $10 to see the actual hearse used in Princess Grace funeral and many funeral programs of different celebrities. Would definitely recommend.

Got here about 45mins before closing, definitely needed more time. So much to see and just really neat exhibits. $10 entry fee for adults, which I think is really a great deal. Definitely want to go back with my sisters. I love this stuff! The museum storefront has such cute items as well. It was about 30mins from downtown Houston, but worth the drive.

Absolutely amazing. I can’t believe it took me so long to get here. I’m thrilled so many schools do field trips here. I would fallen in love with history at such a younger age. Whether you go left or right —you’ll start with some big history either way. We went towards the dead presidents and made our way to the popes. In between are amazing vehicles. There’s an entertainment section. As well, as history of mourning and cremation. I could’ve stayed there for hours. I learned so much. Beautiful displays and so tastefully done. Nothing was morbid or sick. I feel I could go back once a month and see/learn something new. And with only a $10 entry fee—it’s absolutely feasible to do that. The gift shop is the only time I’ve felt moved to buy something. This place is truly a treasure for the Greater Houston community.

What a phenomenal look into the history of funerals, world wide. So much great information regarding the president's, facts that would only have relevance in this type of setting, but super intriguing to know. The artifacts were amazing. JFK last will and testament is just one example. Have you ever seen Lincoln without a beard. My favorite was the extensive collection showcasing Ghana's eccentric, collection of handcarved, coffins. Good job for this outstanding, historic, collection.

What an interesting place! Cars, presidents, celebrities, cultural rituals. It was far more then I anticipated & my friend & I loved it. Bathrooms are on the outside of the museum so make sure you go before entering the museum! Has its own parking lot. No stairs. Everything easily walkable. Go check it out!

Great museum. There was a lot to read, so definitely allow a bit of time to visit. Lots of interesting things to look at as well as interactive displays. Gift shop was pretty awesome too. It was a great place to spend the day in Houston.

I was blown away by how big it actually was. I was also surprised that it wasn't closer to down town but I'm not complaining. Easy and free to park!! The history behind funerals, rituals, burials, cremation, embalming, etc is quite interesting. I learned a lot! They seem to keep up with the times too. They had a spot of Kobe Bryant, Paul Walker, and Robin Williams too. Who knew you could have a coffin shaped like a bird if you wanted to?! Every culture does thing different. The gift shop was too cool and the staff is really helpful. I bought a glass skull that glows in the dark, some stickers and a beautiful rosary.

We decided to visit the Funeral Museum for Father's Day. I wasn't sure what to expect and was really impressed with how many exhibits they have in the museum. You can purchase tickets at the door inside the gift shop. The prices are really reasonable. It wasn't very crowded and it's much bigger than it looks. The first shop has some really cool and interesting items. I found several things and was surprised at how reasonably priced everything was. Usually museum gift shops are expensive. We bought quite a few items. I recommend starting to the left of the gift shop at the Presidential section and move counter-clockwise through the exhibits. There are several rooms that are easy to miss. My favorite sections were the international and celebrity exhibits. The Egyptian exhibit was also interesting. I loved looking at the different cars and horse drawn vehicles. There were a few interactive exhibits that were closed for covid but they didn't look like things I would have done if it was working. It was a fun visit which sounds kind of weird considering the museum is about death. It wasn't depressing or morbid at all. I would have definitely brought my kids there when they were little as it's very educational.

For what it is, this place is alright. But most of the exhibits just feel.....Meh. To many replicas, not enough legit historical items. The cars were cool. That's the highlight of the museum for sure. It's cheap to visit, and they got a good root beer on the souvenir shop. I'd say it's about 20 mins of entertainment in total. Not awful, but not great either.

I had no idea how extensive this collection was. It took over 2 hours to see everything! There are so many items and informative plaques. This museum has put an extensive effort into the collection and display of funerary knowledge. 10/10 will return

I thought this would be a little creepy but it wasn’t. They had a lot of history on Presidential Funerals, Movie Stars, The Pope, Egyptians, Cremation, and many other things I was not expecting to see or learn about. It was very informative and had a lot of memorabilia to look at. You are allowed to take photos. They had a cool gift shop also.

Out of the spots we chose to see during vacation, this was the furthest drive and glad we did. We went on a Monday before lunch, with no wait. Like other reviewers mentioned, it’s not macabre. We loved the information packed into this museum. It showcased US Presidents’ funerals, info on embalming, clothing worn, Papal funerals, options available for yourself and loved ones when deceased, and the different vehicles used as ambulances/hearses. Wish it had more about funeral customs around more parts of the world, besides the few countries it did. Thank you for getting the Shroud of Turin exhibit. It’s beautifully done. The interactive quizzes were fun. We earned our 10% off and got some cute gifts from the museum shop.

I really enjoyed this museum. It doesn't look big at all but once you go in the building it will take you about a good 2 hours to see! I don't know if it was the fact that we were in a funeral museum or if it was just me but I definitely felt some heaviness in the air in certain places, the woman up in the front (who was extremely kind and helpful) told me I wasn't the only one to have said they "sense" something there. Lol. But I had a good time regardless! We would return!

A must do for anyone that is intrigued by the funeral industry or death. They have some very interesting pieces and it covers many different aspects of various funerals. While I was the only one in our family that wanted to visit initially, in the end everyone in our family enjoyed our visit and found it education and amusing. I'd love to visit again.

So I love off the wall unique spots. I seek them out all over the world. This is above average for them. I was expecting a small ode to saying goodbye and was pleasantly surprised not only with the size but the quality or presentation and the detailed explanations of each display. I bet I took 200 photos. Gift shop in tow but lacked stickers for my personal remembrance. Got a patch instead! Also found a couple local dark art pieces so a win! Highly recommend a visit. Only gave 4 stars because I reserve 5 for spots I think are worth a 2nd visit. This is wonderful but I would only return if I was bringing someone new.

This museum is much bigger than it seems on the outside. For the 10$ admission, it's actually a really good collection of artifacts and replicas. The is less of a 'timeline' museum, and more of an important events in funeral history museum. They exhibit some US presidents, an extensive pontificate exhibit, and much smaller exhibits covering different funeral styles in history. Overall, I enjoyed myself.

One of the most amazing date I've been on with my partner!!!! We spent 4 hours in there and still missed just a little bit. Everything here is beyond interesting and very educational in a fun way.

While not knowing what to expect, we were thoroughly amazed. Thinking to spend 1/2 to 1 hour before lunch, we spent 2+ hours here. Thinking it would be a dark and solemn, it was anything but. There is a history on embalming and cremation exhibit. An excellent display of vehicles used for funerals. Items from presidential and famous people. I'm not going to say anymore, don't want to spoil it. At $10 fee, the best money I spent in Texas!

It’s was ok and just ok. There’s an older lady who works the counter and doesn’t know how to use the square system or do simple math which kind of made the process only and frustrating. They have nice displays of how funerals have progressed over they years which was cool. The best were the Egyptian display and the the New Orleans jazz funeral. It wasn’t crowded and they have free parking. It’s really not for kids unless they like history. There was a haunted house and that’s the main reason I went. It’s motion sensors to activate the items. It was setup pretty scary because my kids were scared to go in. I was able to get a refund for it. It’s not expensive at all. It’s something to do if you’re bored.

I consider myself a taphophile, someone who likes cemeteries and funerals. When I found this museum while planning for free time during a work trip I was super excited. It was a cool museum but I felt like it could have been better. A lot of the displays seemed random, not super tied to funerals. That said, there was a section on famous people's funeral cards and programs. That was fun going through it although I'd have liked to flip through them (they were understandably behind glass). At the very least it would be cool to have digital copies I could scan a QR to access to flip through. The display on the Shroud of Turin was also a highlight, super fascinating and provoking to the imagination. Also, Kane Quaye's fantasy coffins were fun. Ultimately, I enjoyed the experience and would recommend it but I felt the ticket price was a little higher than it was worth.

I'm always up for a unique museum and this did not disappoint. They have a large gift shop and extensive exhibit on the Popes that was very interesting. From Egyptian tombs, embalming, cremation, Japanese funerals, Dia de Los Muertos and presidential funerals - anything remotely involving the funeral process is under this roof. We enjoyed the interactive display in the famous icon exhibits, including memorial service brochures from celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Jim Henson and Kobe Bryant. The scavenger hunt is fun, not just for kids. I was especially impressed by the shroud exhibit and learned so many things, while simultaneously questioning even more. Plan for a minimum of a few hours here to truly dive into all the information and exhibits. The layout is cean, concise and easy to navigate. Definitely make it a point to stop in.

This museum is an interesting and informative place to visit. There are many intriguing exhibits covering many aspects of the history of burial and cremation practices around the world as well as in the US. The many models of restored and historical hearses were especially interesting to see. The exhibit on Presidential funeral services also is presented very well. The souvenir shop has many interesting Day of the Dead figurines, and we got a couple. Worth a visit.

This place beats regular museums by a mile. Very well kept up and the exhibits aren't morbid or weird. You won't find fine paintings or sculptures. The have old hursts coffins and a lot of information on burial s throughout the ages. At the time I went they had a section on the Papal linage. If you are ever in Houston and can't take anymore hear or humidity, this place should be on your short list.

They have funeral vehicles from different eras and parts of the world, most of them with accents such as coffins and caskets, floral arrangements, and plaques with the vehicles individual history. The “what happens when the pope dies” exhibit is also fascinating. You could spend a couple hours here and be intrigued. I personally don’t think kids would find it interesting. $10 admission, free parking. Plan on 3 hours, 5 hours if you read every sign (they're all worth reading). You could blow through it - not reading anything - in 1 hour, but that would be really dumb. Presidential, Egyptian, Pope, 1800s traditions, famous sports / actors, and cremation each have their own extensive exhibits. There are 15+- vehicles & carriages... it just keeps on going and all presented in a manner which is interesting.

This is a very good and interesting exhibit. The nature of it makes it a bit quirky and odd, but it is not presented in a creepy, morbid way. I found the section with famous individuals' funeral service bulletins interesting. The museum does a good job of giving a slightly deeper education of the processes involved when someone dies as well as showing some past traditions. The collection of herses is impressive. The funeral bus and the three person casket are very interesting, and at least the former, funny. The museum is very easy to access off of I-45, and when we visit, parking was easy, close and plentiful. If you like off-the-wall attractions this is for you. It's relatively quick tour too. You can skim through it in 30 mins, but it also easy to spend a couple of hours there. If you really immerse yourself and read everything 3 hours would be possible.

We took our 4 kids in 2000 and they still talk about this place! Now they want to take their kids there. Very educational and just so darn cool!

Very large, tucked away gem with a lot of antique hearses. They museum is very open and clean, with many exhibit areas. I could do with less about famous people's funeral programs and more about the traditions in many countries and religions all over the world. Still a qwirky thing that we have only in Houston.

I very much enjoyed this museum. It was well organized, visually appealing, and had lots of information. I especially enjoyed the information on funerary items as it relates to the former Presidents. Exceptionally well done. Even though it was more modern, the section on cremation and the ways ashes into memorial items was also really interesting. This museum is roughly 15 minutes from the airport, so it makes a great option if you want to see a place before leaving but don't have time to go into the city proper. Highly recommended for people who are open to this kind of material. Just a note: there were children here who seemed to be enjoying themselves so I would vote good for kids who are old enough to have the self control to not climb in the antique hearses. Second note: While it is close to the airport, there is not public transportation nearby so you would need to get a Lyft, cab, or Uber if you don't have a car.

A neat little museum you don't want to miss! A lot of history and fascinating information. You will learn about U.S. President's funerals, the Pope's, and much much more. Tickets are reasonably priced as well!

By far one of THE BEST museums ever visited. There was no stone left unturned. Great information. It would have been nice if there were some self guided audio to go along with the the different exhibits. It would have been nice to see some exhibits organize by time-line of where funerals started to where they are today. Overall an excellent museum that everyone should see.

Located within a congregation of apartment complexes and surrounded by black iron gates sits one of the most unHousual museums in Houston. The National Museum of Funeral History, or NMFH, takes a detailed look at the funeral customs of the present and past from all around the world. You can take a detailed stroll through the faux-marble halls of the "Vatican" detailing the internment of a Pope, then pivot to the process of cremation, and finish your visit off glancing through the methods loved ones used to say goodbye to some of the brightest stars. The museum sprawls across 35,000 square feet and is packed with detailed exhibits and, most extensively, glorious antique methods of transporting the dead. The inarguable star of the museum is the enormous collection of hearses, both motorized and horse-drawn, but there is so much to peruse through. One of my personal favorites was the exhibit on Ghanian artistic coffins, though the ornamental Japanese hearse was a close second favorite. NMFH costs only $10 for adult entry and is most certainly worth every cent. There is at least 3 hours worth of displays to wonder through, so plan to spend a good while within this winding and wonderful building.

I thought this would be an interesting museum. I have done quite a bit of genealogy work which has put me in many cemeteries all over so I thought this would be an extension of that. This is more in line with the process of burial in the funeral home and its processing. There are many beautifully restored hearse carriages. The woodworking and details of these are a work of art. There is a section dedicated to hairwork, or the Victorian mourning jewelry, the wearable art made from a deceased loved one's hair. There is a section dedicated to the origins of embalming. There is also a huge portion for state and papal funerals, even a recreation of the funeral altar and tomb of Pope John Paul II. There is a good bit to see and it's a very affordable ticket.

The museum is unique, interesting and respectful of the profession. The gift shop is on point! Fun for all ages. Our teens were engaged, so that should say something in itself!

Well worth the visit. There is a good balance of both history and the process that goes into some aspects of funeral preparation. The museum offers a scavenger hunt for kids to fill out questions from the exhibits. This is challenging and they will have to look and read carefully! Fantastic sections with artifacts related to former U.S. Presidents and the Pope (multiple). Probably only need to plan for a couple of hours for a visit. A good rainy day activity for sure!

Excellent museum! We have enjoyed this museum numerous times. We go back about once a year and the temporary exhibits are always interesting. And the permanent exhihits continue to amaze me. We love the scavenger hunt but I would suggest walking through the museum slowly first then do the scavenger hunt. This is so you can observe and enjoy the exhibits first before getting into a scavenger and miss something. We like this museum because we get educated, in a gentle, informative way about the processes taking place after people die. There is nothing morbid or gross or scary about the exhibits. They are all well thought out and selected to communicate a specific process in the death & burial processes of ours and other cultures.

This visit has been on my wishlist for a few months! There is everything from Presidential funeral information, celebrity memorabilia, funeral coaches and cars to religious exhibits. Everything was neatly displayed and easy to read. Photos are allowed. Give yourself 2-3 hours for a leisurely stroll.

Really good place. Lots of artifacts and information. Exhibit on the death of popes was overkill. Too much! Great hearses, caskets, and presidential funerals.

This was super interesting and I loved reading everything about the history of objects and funerals. Even though I am not catholic or even Christian I found the history of the Popes funerals extremely interesting and I also really enjoyed the different burials and Funeral histories. Definitely recommend!

Very interesting place. We were in Houston for a day before a cruise out of Galveston. My friends were skeptical but agreed to come. We pulled into the parking lot in almost didn't go in. It is in a sketchy neighborhood with very secure fencing around the parking lot. There are signs in the parking lot saying They are not responsible for personal vehicles. However when I walked in there was a security guard who sits in front of cameras monitoring the parking lot. I do have to say the security guard did not have much of a personality however. The only other employee we found was the woman at the cash register, slow was an understatement. I also was concerned about accessibility for a wheelchair. That was no problem either. We ended up spending over 2 hours here. Grab a scavenger hunt when you walk in, makes it even more interesting looking for the answers. Many different rooms for different interests. A room with celebrities, the Pope. Presidents. Interesting customized caskets. I love their slogan any day above ground is a good one.
