Most Houstonians who are in the mood for a museum experience will make their way to the Houston Museum District. There are, of course, lots of great museums in this district but there is another museum perfect for lovers of art that is located elsewhere. That would be the Menil collection, close to the University of St. Thomas. The bulk of the attractions of the Menil Collection are found in the main building, a single- story art museum that can be walked through in about one to two hours. You will find art from well- known folks such as Andy Warhol but the majority of the art will be from artists you have likely never heard of before. Besides the main building, there are a few smaller buildings across the street, housing more art. This is a quiet art museum and one cool thing about it is that the focus is on the art and not on learning about the art. What I mean is that, with each display, there is limited information- namely, the artist, year it was produced, etc. With other museums, there is often additional information about each work of art and you feel compelled to stop and read. The Menil Collection is different. It limits the information so that you can spend more time looking at the artwork. There is no charge to visit the Menil Collection, and this is certainly one of its appeals. However, you need to be careful where you park. There are several places along the street that look like they are available for parking, but they are not and the area police patrol will be quick to hit you with a fine. There is a bistro and a bookstore, too, for food and books to further your education. The Menil Collection is different from other art museums. It’s different in a good way and while it doesn’t house a ton of fine art, the abstract, three- dimensional, and contemporary art you will find here are certainly deserving of a look and you really can’t argue with free admission. I recommend a visit if you find yourself in the vicinity.

If you’re looking for something fun to do for FREE add this place to your list. Of course it’s always nice to donate but the admission is free and the art is beautiful. Also they have a nice area outside where you can set up a blanket and take in the views.

Absolutely one of my favorite places! I admit that I love a museum. But rarely have I found one I enjoyed as much as this one and without spending a single penny! Yes... free! It will take days to see everything. Even better, right? A wonderful collection of items. And staff that is knowledge and nice. You will enjoy yourself here. Wear comfortable shoes.

The Menil Collection, a private museum nestled in Houston, offers an incredibly unique art experience. What sets this boutique museum apart is its unconventional approach to admission – on a donation-only basis. Upon entry, visitors are encouraged to contribute an amount they feel comfortable with, and while the suggested donation is $20 per person, the emphasis lies on making art accessible to all. The museum itself is a hidden gem, featuring a vast and extraordinary collection of art. Its exterior may appear unassuming, but step inside, and you're met with a spacious, calming environment that exudes artistic charm. The relaxed ambiance invites visitors to explore and appreciate the carefully curated pieces. The staff at Menil Collection add to the overall positive experience. Their friendliness and helpfulness contribute to the welcoming atmosphere, enhancing the enjoyment of the artistic journey. It's evident that they are passionate about sharing the beauty within the museum. An intriguing aspect is the occasional unveiling of a permanent collection collective. During these moments, visitors are kindly asked not to take photos, respecting the privacy of the artists and collectors involved. This decision adds an air of exclusivity to the experience, encouraging patrons to immerse themselves fully in the art without distractions. Moreover, Mio Collection keeps things fresh with a series of different exhibitions that change regularly. This commitment to diverse and evolving displays ensures that each visit offers something new and exciting. In essence, Menil Collection stands out not only for its impressive and rare art pieces but also for its commitment to accessibility, privacy, and a continuously evolving exhibition landscape. It's a haven for art enthusiasts seeking a unique and relaxing artistic escape in the heart of Houston.

Incredible collection of rarely seen work (there’s a no photo policy) and an adorable neighborhood! (See the photos for the nice dude reading in the tree ☀️). The indoor/outdoor style architecture allows you to sit and take everything in as well. A special shout-out to the bookstore which had a copy of James Baldwin & Richard Avedon’s book “Nothing Personal”. I’d been looking for it forever! ❤️

This was a very pleasant surprise. We intended to spend an hour or two with this museum snd instead spent most of the day including having lunch at the Menil Bistro. The Collection is housed in several buildings each thematic in content. The exhibits are very well lit and grandly spaced so you are not assaulted by walls of art. The buildings were design to house the collection so there was an added architectural element to the exhibits. Don’t miss the Rothko Chapel. We give it four and one half clams on the coveted Five Quahog Rating Scale

The Menil Collection, located in Montrose neighbourhood Houston, Texas, refers either to a museum that houses the art collection of founders John de Menil and Dominique de Menil or to the collection itself of approximately 17,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs and rare books. There is ample parking in Alabama adjacent to Rothko Chapel across the street from Menil Bistro and Menil Bookstore. Exquisitely curated shows.Ample free parking off Alabama. It’s a not to miss destination. easily make a day of it a little shopping, art, cocktails all within walking

What a lovely place. It’s not just art (I kind of went with the impression that it was an art collection only)that is there, but also artifacts! Highly recommend.

Wonderful (free!) art museum The Menil has long been a staple of Houston’s art scene and boasts a wide collection of art across four structures: the main building, drawing institute, Cy Twombly gallery, and Dan Flavin Installation at Richmond Hall. There’s both permanent and revolving art displays. The peaceful grounds are perfect for a picnic, dog walk, or jog. No tickets required unless special occasion.

Always a great experience. Love this free museum. A great opportunity for everyone to enjoy a part of history with the changing art & exhibits. The entire area is beautiful, from the museum, the park, bookstore & bistro. One could easily spend an afternoon just exploring & relaxing.

This museum is fantastic! The staff is impeccable in their attention to detail. The displays are lit with creative art & thought. The landscaping is beautiful here, & the trees are intricately arbored with great attention to detail. They are very family-amiable. Come in and enjoy the art!

Jorge and Vera were the only nice people. Everyone else was absolutely rude. The staff needs better training on how to treat people. Just because we look young does not mean we are reckless. We have respect towards art, sadly, the staff does not have respect, rather prejudice. Some pieces are also full of dust and the glass protecting them has spider excrement and webs. Please fix this.

A phenomenal place to go for a peaceful and rejuvenating day at the art museum. Their surreal art section is my absolute favorite, you can just lose yourself. There are also rotating art exhibitions that are almost always fantastic. The atmosphere is tranquil, and there are lots of little additions to it sprinkled around the Menil itself. (Check out the Rothko Chapel!) I highly recommend this Houston gem for a day of reflection, relaxation, and enjoyment.

The art center was pretty impressive but the use of space is very concerning. They have a whole room for lights and a room full abscract art. The most interesting part of the museum was the big building Infront of everything else. The art there was amazing. I think they should draw more attention to certain places because the building is kind of unknown and placed right next to a neighborhood.

I was visiting the interactive exhibition that I couldn’t interact with. What the point of such an exhibition? But the other pieces was just beautiful. Unfortunately you can’t make a photo or video of the most of expo. The ancient pieces are gorgeous. You definitely should visit this place

Loved this place! Not just de main building, but the whole neighborhood. If you're looking for cultural, free things to do in Houston this is THE place. The collection has several paintings of Picasso and Miro as well as other artists. Outside you can enjoy a picnic in the park, sitting under one of the most beautiful trees i've seen, or discover a quiet spot in the students building.

Fantastic collection and a must do for anyone visiting Houston. I came during a long weekend with my parents and grandmother. They new ten times more than me about the collections which made it even better. The exhibitions were very organized and the guides helped quite a bit understanding the whole backstory of many of the art pieces. Fun!

If you are in Houston, this is a must to-visit. A donation based space, full with gems of contemporary art. I stumbled upon my favourite Magritte piece, unaware it was there. Loved it!

I would have enjoyed this exhibit more without little kids with me ... but the whole reason I went was for their benefit and they had to hold my hand the whole time and they were not allowed to climb on anything, including the outdoor statues, which made it really hard for them to enjoy ... they did like the light exhibit... I'm grateful this is a free art exhibit... I don't recommend for kids under ten years old... This picture was the only one I took after I found out we also were not allowed to take photos The kids thought they aren't look like scribble scrabble l o l

Nice and quiet museum with a thoughtfully arranged display. Built in the 1980s, and as a neighbor, the houses around the museum were termed "Menilville" because Dominique de Menil had all the bungalows painted gray with white trim. Beautiful part of Montrose.

Great modern day art from various artists. They have multiple buildings so you do have to go outside and go to a different buildings to see other arts. There is no photos inside of the exhibit rooms, but outside in the hallways, you can take as many pictures as you want.

The building is absolutely stunning, architecturally speaking. The art does rotate but I got to see a Warhol and a Pollock. I felt at peace inside. People are respectful and quiet. There’s not a lot of rooms so it’s not an all day affair. It’s also free! You simply need to register a time when you want to go and an online ticket is generated. I definitely want to go again.

Parks nearby for picnics and dog friendly (in nearby parks), no flash photography! Leave your phone on silent! Best way to experience, always has different art, always love to see different art installations

I loved going here. This is definitely one of the most enjoyable art museums to go to in Houston. The grounds are very beautiful and well kept. And it is nice and quiet inside and outside the museum. I really like how there are multiple buildings, and they have a very nice collection of artwork.

Incredible grounds! Truly one of the best green spaces in Houston The museum itself is quirky, and worth checking out to see the difference between a collection by individuals vs an institution (like the MFAH, for example). I've only been inside once, and while the special exhibit on display was one of the best curated ones I've ever visited at any museum, I have not returned due to the prohibition on photography and the extreme guard to visitor ratio making me feel very uncomfortable, unwelcome, and unable to engage with the art authentically

The Menil Collection is spread across a park area with three distinct areas. There is a traditional style art museum filled with Ernst to Man Ray to Warhol. Then there is the Twombly hall, which I could sit in for hours, losing myself in the hidden spaces of his canvases. Finally, the Rothko Chapel which is a place not of external religion, but internal reflection with enormous canvases that shift as your eyes adjust to the interior light, and the light filtering into the space changes with the sun’s shifting. Truly a place you can spend a whole day or more.

Great place for locals and out-of-town guests to experience fine art in a calm and beautiful setting. They recommend reservations, but entrance is always free. Don't miss the various buildings, including the Rothko Chapel. The Menil Collection is truly a unique gem.

Such a rare and beautiful collection beautifully presented. Large collections of classic and contemporary art pieces. We were very happy to see all eras and genres. The facilities were clean and well appointed and not very crowded. The guest services staff were very polite and helpful.

This museum is cute and just big enough to do in an afternoon stroll or to take your child and learn to appreciate art worth just enough people and a grassy run around to later release the energy. They also had a yoga class not part of the museum but it was going on when we arrived. What a great way to start your day! We made reservations for a Thursday tour and we walked right in and it was free! I have a greater appreciation for Thursday’s because modern museums are free Thursday’s and having a homeschooled child makes planning her well that much easier.

Didn’t know this place existed until I was walking right by it! Lovely grounds. It’s free to visit after you check in. Photography isn’t allowed in the galleries, but that made it for more of a special experience. The collections are incredible and include a wide variety of art from different time periods from all around the world. I was lucky enough to visit while they were having a music performance in the lobby. Definitely a gem in Houston!

This has always been my favorite museum in Houston and pretty much anywhere. The building is gorgeous and the art collection is Seco d to none. Just simply amazing. A must see for any art lover. This place inspired me to become a real painter. It's also a great place to have a date which is sort of why I was there. We didn't actually make it in to see the collection that day but we did have a very fabulous picnic in the park across the street. The park is covered with lush green grass and grand old oak trees. And there is always a good vibe permeating from there. It can be romantic as well, and was. There are other parts to the museum that are worth visiting too.

My absolute favorite space in Houston. I’m mostly fascinated by the architecture and the tranquility of its atmosphere. It’s so well managed and maintained I cannot believe it’s for free. Make sure you visit all the buildings and take a walk around it’s a beautiful neighborhood

  • 1/5 Moriah B. 6 months ago on Google
The art was beautiful ! I the only thing wrong was the big black lady with the red braids in the African exhibit, she was super rude and condescending, and just had a disgusting attitude…. Wasn’t nice at all , her presence was super uncomfortable and unprofessional and she shouldn’t have a job at this establishment. The other ladies just stare you down the whole time , making you feel uncomfortable. Other than that I highly recommend you truly admire the artwork , but if you wanna feel comfortable enjoying your art go to other museums in the Houston area , the security ppl are nicer and actually educate you on the art work . 2/10

This gallery is beautiful inside and out. Well placed and chosen collections that extends down a hallway with scattered views of the oaks outside and tropical gardens inside. There's no admission fee and the staff was extremely helpful. There is also the Menil cafe and Bookstore across the street. I tried to go here last year and but it was closed due to the pandemic. I was super excited that it was open. There was only one collection that I absolutely loved. Everything else was just okay. The docent / security were on top of us at all times. I understand them wanted to make sure things are not touched and safe but it was absolutely ridiculous and made me feel uncomfortable. If you're going to the main building you might as well go to the other ones holding different collections. Not sure I would go again or recommend.

  • 4/5 Kristin Marie S. 3 years ago on Google
As other reviewers have said, this place is a treat. A wonderful collection of art in a beautiful space. The place is amazing and free to enter with a timed admission. The biggest downer is that it is nearly impossible to enjoy and immerse yourself in the art with security over your should like you're a child that can't be trusted. I'm not sure if we looked clumsy to them or if it was just a very slow day, but we had guards over our shoulder and pacing in circles around us at every moment... whether reflecting on a bench or contemplating a piece of art. It was unnerving. Otherwise a nice way to spend the morning among world-class art and incredible exhibits.

I visited the museum for a few hours, everything about this gallery is great for the art lovers! Free admission, good abstract pieces and even a Picasso! Only complaint is the staff, they make the experience a bit uncomfortable with how closely they creepily follow you around. Puts a bit of a damper on the creative atmosphere. FYI: Make sure to make a reservation on their website before showing up.
