If you want to join the YMCA to have access to a pool for lap swimming, do NOT go to this one. Half the time I visit the place to swim, the pool is closed — usually because a lifeguard didn’t show up. I’ve begun asking for a reduction in my monthly dues because the problem has become so serious. I understand labor is tight now, but it’s not fair to collect monthly payment from members and not provide the facilities as promised.

5/5/2023 UPDATE: Great news! The pool is now officially open on Saturday afternoons until 5:00 p.m. Consequently, I have adjusted the rating Stars. The Y has been a pillar of the downtown fitness community for many decades. 3/10/2023 UPDATE: Maintenance issues have been mostly resolved, however the pool hours remain a point of contention. The pool has remained closed on Saturday afternoons since November. This was allegedly represented as a temporary measure due to a Lifeguard shortage. Multiple lifeguards have now been hired, yet the pool remains closed. And we have just received notice that our monthly dues will be returning to pre-pandemic levels, so we will now be paying even MORE for LESS service. Why can't the Flagship YMCA keep the pool open on Saturday afternoons? This is a major inconvenience for those of us who work for a living, and have for years relied on our Saturday afternoon lap swims to maintain our fitness... ORIGINAL POST: I have been a member for years. I love to lap swim in the pool. Sadly, twice in the past week the pool has been closed due to lack of lifeguards. Even worse, I did not find out about the closure until I arrived to the facility. And when the pool is closed, they also close the steam & sauna rooms. This issue falls squarely on management, which has been sorely lacking lately. Maintenance has also been shoddy. The community whirlpool has had a broken aeration (bubbles) system for over a month. The women's steam room has also been broken for over a month. We are definitely not getting what we pay for. This place used to be a gem, but it now needs a major management overhaul.

Child watch hours are very inconvenient, especially the weekends. The family pool area is never opened, we have to literally get a section of the lap pool and stay in a corner to swim. When lightning strikes they close the inside pool for hours... the inside pool. They don't send messages out, they just let you drive all the way there for disappointment. Randomly closed today from lack of employees but you all are still charging full price monthly for our children to be on the membership though. It's ridiculous at this point... I'm giving the YMCA one last chance.

This YMCA was the worst I’ve ever been too- pool is the worst ever. It’s not family oriented like the other facilities we’ve been too. They give you a specific area to swim and don’t allow kids to really have the pool experience that we paid for. kids are not even welcome in the jacuzzi ‼️ plus the lifeguards aren’t even old enough to wipe their own A**. my daughter suffers from Autism and the way they treated her made us leave within 10 minutes of arriving. Best Advice pick a different location and forget the glitz and glam 🙏🏾

This place used to be amazing, but it has slowly declined over the years. The pool is closed half the time and they keep trimming their hours yet membership rates stay the same. I love the facility and the employees are nice, but there must be serious systemic issues behind the scenes. Is there a manager? Who knows. The pay is extremely low so it's no wonder no one really cares that much. Sad to say that after being a member for ten years, if things dont turn around in the next month or so I'm done with it.

This YMCA is the worst. The pool area is always closed. Countless times I have arrived to use the pool only to find out it is closed. You do not get what you pay for. You’ve been warned. Other than never having enough staff to keep the pool open, they close the pool of there is lighting within 10 miles of the facility. Keep in mind the pool is 100% indoors. Today’s closure was due to a single lightning strike, 9 miles away. They are always looking for a reason to close the pool early.

First of all, the people who work there are very nice but I gotta say that they need a little help in communicating the membership fee. My son and I have been through too much these last few years and getting a membership felt like a great thing to do for our body and minds, however, not my bank account. So when I was told that I would be billed $14/monthly after proving my financial hardship, my heart sang! I was not thrilled, nor my son, when we finally found the inside pool at this location and it was so hard to breathe that we left. He was not comfortable changing in the locker room because of the older gentlemen. We did not feel comfortable and decided to go to another ymca. Today they attempted to take $48 from my account and when I told them that there was a major misunderstanding, I was informed that I could not cancel until I paid the $48…we have not even used our pass anywhere and it was more than double the amount I agreed to pay! No ma’am. We will not be returning.

Wonderful place to workout. No bros!! Clean locker rooms. Free two hour parking in the garage for members. I heard it's packed in the hours right after work. I try to go first thing in the morning or lunch on the days I work from home.

Great gym! I have been coming here for quite some time now. The equipment is new and functional and the location is very convenient for downtown workers. The sauna and facility are always clean and I enjoy the fact that the locker room is huge. It spans both upstairs and downstairs.

I’ve been coming to this YMCA for the past 5-6 years. it’s such a big space and there’s a ton of machines. The steam room and the sauna are always working. The pool is big and the Jacuzzi is nice as well. The classes here are amazing and the instructors are always very helpful.

I agree with the previous review regarding the pool. We called to 20 minutes prior to arrival to confirm they were open and (after being out on hold to confirm) they said the pool would be open from 5-7:30pm. We showed up and they said the pool would be open from 5-5:15pm. I really enjoy the Trotter Y, but this Y isn’t worth the effort for swimming.

I got a membership at because I was very satisfied with my previous experience in a different city. The website never accepted my email address so I couldn't schedule classes. When I called to cancel the membership because I didn't use it I was told... 1. I needed to download the app to schedule classes. That wasn't obvious/revealed when I registered online. 2. I was going to be charged the next monthly fee because I didn't call to cancel with 10 days notice. So, they suck because I never even set foot in the building but was charged for 2 months and couldn't schedule a single class. Way to go YMCA.

I adore this place. The building itself is a wonder of architectural design, and the people who work here are truly dedicated to their mission to serve the community. It's nearly always open and it's easy to get to on public transit. Sure, it gets full, but for the price and the wide variety of services it offers, there is no comparison in the city.

The Tellepsen YMCA is truly a place for all ages and types. They have quality instructors who lead a wide variety of classes that meet the needs of all members. They provide childcare and summer care. It is a great place.

The gym is very nice! But cancelling a YMCA membership is difficult and onerous that it completely outweighs the benefits. If any other business made it as difficult to cancel as the YMCA does, they'd be widely slagged. If you never, ever find yourself in need of cancelling, Tellepsen is very good. But beware.

I have never gone to this one! I always go to the one on Augusta near the galleria in uptown. Love the indoor pool! Would have been an ideal day to swim in it today! 11/21/22. It was cold outside and raining and I wanted to swim. Need to find out if my membership covers other YMCA facilities! Super stoked to know this one is very close to my employer! Will be seen you all soon.

I’ve been coming here for a couple of years and they just keep improving. They now have a cafe downstairs and they are really good. The yoga and Pilates classes are awesome along with the hitt classes. I always recommend this gym

I loved this Y. Huge facility with a very expansive weight floor, plenty squat racks with bumper plates and functional room. 4 multi purpose rooms, and a full pool. 5/5 as far as YMCA facilities go!

Telepsen YMCA has always been accommodating to families. The staff here is reasonable and well trained. The reason I’m leaving this review is, I’m honestly appalled that Kris Madjic would take a photo of people, he considers to be children in their swimsuits. Kris did not ask these 2 employees for their consent. Photos are not allowed in the pool area under any circumstances for obvious reasons. If someone took a photo of your son or daughter and posted it on the internet without his or her permission as a parent what would you do? I’m surprised these 2 individuals have not pressed charges on you.

Basketball, racquetball, squat racks, lap pool, hottest steam room in town and they just got a bunch of new treadmills with hexagon cushions in them! Hexagon cushions, you gotta see it to believe it. What more could you ask for? This gym is an 11/10, just ask surfer Bob

Having tried several gyms in the immediate area, I can safely say that Tellepsen YMCA is a remarkably good value. The facility is well maintained and staff/management is phenomenal. If you live near or in downtown Houston, Tellepsen YMCA is the gold standard at this price point.

Great facility, clean friendly and plenty of equipment and a great track .The staff does a great job at keeping equipment clean and seem eager to help if needed. The only complaint is the guests who squat on equipment while on their phones.

I just joined this gym and I have enjoyed it very much so far. I am coming from the 24 hour fitness in midtown that closed down recently and I am very happy with the adjustment to the YMCA. Good parking, great machines, tons of classes, large pool, sauna, kids babysitting center, and a little food court.

I love this Y. The facility is great and nice for me to use on my way home from work. The Women's Center is a comfortable place to work out in if I do not want to go on up to the main cardio room. If I still need a few steps, it is a pleasure to use the walkway above the cardio room.

We are so thankful for our local YMCA. The ChildWatch center, the exercise classes, and access to things like relatively affordable swim lessons, have really been a life saver for our family.

The employees and the members are great people. The facilities are very nice and the classes have very good instructors. In general I have a really good time exercising every day at the Tellepsen YMCA.

1st time attending this location. Joined a circuit training class Monday, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Walked a couple of laps then hit the sauna.

From my own experience, I found the facilities to be excellent and well-equipped, with something for everyone regardless of age and fitness level. There's a wide range of group classes available, including Aqua Zumba and Pilates, as well as fitness programs created for Silver Sneakers. I was also impressed by the friendly and helpful staff who were always willing to lend a hand or answer any questions. Overall, I'd definitely recommend giving the Houston Downtown YMCA a visit if you're ever in the area. It's a great place to stay fit, socialize, and make new friends!
