We drove down from Dallas to see the USS Texas Battleship. The ship was open this weekend, but has been closed for a while. They are going to do extensive repairs soon. I strongly recommend coming aboard this fantastic piece of history when she's open.

This is a favorite day trip for our family! The monument contains a highly educational museum full of artifacts from Texas history, a theater that shows an award-winning short film (that my 10 year old enjoyed enough to "shush" me when I asked him a question), a room full of dioramas that have fascinated me since I was young, and an observation deck at the top with an amazing view! Unfortunately the elevator to the observation deck is currently closed for repairs. There are also walking and hiking trails with information on the plants and animals of the area along the paths, plenty of great picnic areas, and leashed pets are welcome.

For anyone interested in Texas history this stop is a must. Go to the top and get an overall view of the grounds where the battle happened. Watch a great 35 min movie and visit the museum. Don’t forget to get your Texas Passport signed and or pick up one for free to start your Texas History tour around the state.

Great place to learn history. I was sad that the battleship was closed down for repairs. So we couldn't tour the battleship. Going to the monument was AWESOME!!! Very peaceful!

Had a good and educational time here. Was disappointed they didn't have all 6 flags flying while we were there. We really liked how they described what led up to the battle inscribed on the monument. The stone markers layer out at specific features/events helped see what and how things happened.

Lovely views and a great museum. Interactive things for the kids to get them interested in history. Free posters and pinch pot kits. Work puzzles and solve history clues. You can also sign up for a van tour included with the price of admission. The van drives you around, but you do not get out. There is a great film that is a nice introduction to the site. Ample free parking. Stay as long as you like.

This was a pretty cool place if you enjoy Texas history and want to see the battlefield and specific spots where the Texas Militia and Mexican Army camped and fought. There is a marsh hiking trail, but it was closed and appeared as if it hadn't been maintained in quite some time. The souvenir shop was a little lacking. I was hoping to get a tiny monument replica, but there was only pencils, t-shirts and a couple of key chains. Everything else was just related to other Texas History. Lastly the observation deck was closed due to elevator maintenance. This was also disappointing. Overall I enjoyed the visit. If you just visit the museum you'll probably spend about an hour and a half here. If you visit all 20 markers, the cemetery, the other monuments, and the museum you will spend quite a while I spent about 4 hours seeing everything.

I have been coming to San Jacinto my enter life and it is where my love of history was laid. I was last here in July when it was 105 degrees outside, and despite that I loved being able to drive around the battleground and see the markers of where everything took place. The museum had a new exhibit detailing the construction of the monument as well as walking through Texas History and figures who were at the battle. The film shown in the theater was excellent and I highly recommend taking the time to watch it. Whether you are new to Texas History or a passionate Texan, I highly recommend coming to San Jacinto. Going to miss seeing the Battleship here but there are great opportunities to explore the decisive battle that won Texas independence.

Did you know that the San Jacinto Monument is actually the tallest monumental column in the world? Really cool place to visit and walk the reflection pond. I believe you can go up in the tower, yet I've never personally gone up. The USS Texas is within eyesight and worth seeing if you've never seen a ship from WW1. Perfect for a day trip to learn about the battle that declared Texas its own entity! I saw this snake when I visited on New Years Day.

I learned so much about the great state of Texas at this site. We spent 3 hours here and still only scratched the surface of what there was to see and learn. I want to come back here with my kids and my grandkids to help them learn about what happened here and why it matters today. Texas Forever!

The place where history sleeps is here and that is what makes it so special. A half day trip to this place is the best way to spend your time. I found it to be very informative and interesting for all of us. A lot more can be learned there, and on top of that, there is a trail where we can take a long walk if we want to. If you are interested in visiting the museum, which is housed inside the monument, you will have to pay 14 dollars per person for admission.

Great place to learn Mexico/Texas history. Drive or bike the battleground area for free and imagine the people and battle. Great area for birding, too. Museum and observatory are worth the entrance fee.

Loved checking out the battleground of one of the most historic battles for Texas. Having specific locations marked by historical stone markers and signs helped lay out the entire battle wonderfully. Will have to visit again when I have more time.

Although the museum is no longer free (which is one reason we used to visit frequently), the battleground is still a fun outing. There are lots of birds to see as well as insects and plants. My kids and I enjoy walking around the grounds and enjoying the wildlife.

Impressive monument. Very tall. The entree fee of $12 is a bit to high. The nearby reflection pool needs some patching up. The tiles are sinking in the water and they fixed it by putting fences around it.

This was the first time to actually go in to the monument. I have lived in Houston my entire life and I am in my mid 60's. This was one of the best places to visit. So much history in one place. The elevator ride to the observation room was great the view was amazing. I will be back to walk the trails.

I can't say I'm much of a history buff so it was pretty much what you see is what you get. We strolled around the small museum on the ground floor but didn't go up the elevators, which you can do for a small fee. (It was closed for maintenance when we were there.) It's probably not worth going out of your way to see but it's a nice, short detour among other tourist stops in Houston if you're close by. The weather was perfect when we went and I was surprised to learn that it's actually taller than the Washington Monument in D.C.

The U.S.S. Texas is the only battleship that was in World War 1 and World War 2. You can see the guns and shells that they used, the size of them, awesome. This past weekend was the last time to tour it before it is taken to Galveston to be refurbished. We enjoyed the history.

A great experience! Love the museum and the short movie inside. A VERY HISTORIC place in American and Texas history. My only down is that the elevator is currently not working but other than that...👍👍

Definitely worth a visit to this interesting place. The video was awesome & I enjoyed learning about the battle & history that way rather than reading it all. The observation deck was cool, the change machine was not working & I was short a quarter for the smashed penny machine, so we had to go down to get change. Luckily one of the volunteers told us about a penny machine by the gift shop. There was also a crowd of school kids running around yelling which made the experience a little less enjoyable.

This is an absolute must to see! The last battle that led to requiring Texas. The museum is very informative and wonderful artifacts. Be sure to drive around the grounds and learn about the history that took place here.

We have been living in Texas since 2014 but didn't know much about this place. Great place to visit. On a side note. Please make sure to bring a mosquito replacement with you.

This is such a beautifully preserved place and a must see. What the video at the monument first to get a great history lesson of Texas Independence.

The Obelisk is taller than the Washington Monument in DC just proving once again that everything is bigger in Texas lol. The World War I battleship the USS Texas was an amazing sight to see as well. Totally free to view but tours cost money, Not sure how much as I didn't take the tour.

It’s a great experience to visit this place, it has couple of small parks along with trails to explore the historic spot and nature together. There is no ticket for entry to the park and to the trials but there is an 12$ ticket for the museum and to go to the top of the tower , along with a small show about the battle. There are posters and wall engraving with quotes and lot of information about the battle, ferries, and past.

Not how I remember it growing up. But still nice! The workers are amazingly helpful. There will be a reenactment that I am exited to go to. Forgot when exactly but I am pretty sure it’s on the website.

Definitely worth the trip! Beautiful monument with ample parking. Inside there is a museum, theater with film about the battle site, and an elevator up to the observation deck.

They have cleaned up the park greatly. On my last visit, I was so disappointed in the lack of maintenance. I miss the Texas battleship, and the prices are up to visit the museum, but if the price maintains the park, then it's worth it.

I can recall several visits to San Jacinto as a native Houstonian. Now living in middle TN, I enjoy SJ even more. It’s nice to see the USS Texas get the attention she deserves. And thankful to see SJ keeping the grounds up to those who fought here. It’s a worthwhile trip for anyone! Especially when the Texas returns!! I recommend the YouTube video by the fat electrician on the USS Texas. Entertaining and informative!! But then, I also am a history enthusiast!!

A great place to explore and experience how the Texas' independence was won from Mexico in 1936 in the Battle of San Jacinto.

The best place we visited in Texas behind the Alamo. Great museum, movie, and exhibits about the Texas Revolution. It is a history lover's dream. The monument has easy access and there is a ton of green space and trails on the grounds of the park for hiking, picnicking, and bird watching. They have restrooms, gift shop, and very reasonable pricing for all you get to see and do. Staff is extremely friendly.

I've been going here literally my whole life. The grounds are a little more run down than they used to be but it's still worth the visit. Very nostalgic!

I only seen the museum or the actual monument but it was absolutely amazing!! There is also a small theater inside that plays a 30 min movie detailing the events that transpired before, during, and after the battle. I highly recommend going to see this museum and monument if you have the chance. It's an absolutely amazing experience!!!

The State of Texas is kicking out the battleship? What’s up with that? The area itself is nasty and surrounded by oil refineries. Elevator to the top of the monument wasn’t working. I would recommend a strongly worded email to Gov. Abbott.

We had not visited the Monument & Battleship/park since back in the 90's, a very long time ago. Very interesting and a great part of Texas History.

  • 5/5 Nicole H. 2 years ago on Google
What an impressive monument 567 feet tall. The elevator was out of service so we didn’t get to make it to the top (I wasn’t going to take the stairs). Maybe next time I’m that area I will stop in. Still an awesome place.
