This is a beautiful museum for the culture. The staff was very helpful and the artist was downstairs available for any questions. No admission fee, just donations. Will be returning next time I visit H-town. Peace and power 🤎✊🏾

HMAC is one of the smaller museums in the city, but it still provides 2 floors of content. The museum is currently free with the option of donations. Both floors contain exhibitions, but the 2nd floor space allows room for large size works to be observed from a distance. The first floor also contains a gift shop that contains art for sale, African apparel, books, and more. In addition, there's an elevator on site to accommodate those in need. HMAC is a credible space to view contemporary African American art, get informed on current social/political issues in the black community, and get exposed to provocative visuals. Whether visiting during lunch or spending extended time interacting with the art, it's worth the visit. I recommend visiting during a day of clear skies. The interior lighting is modest, and the natural light from the museums windows can be a fairly gloomy on a cloudy day.

This was an awesome an amazing experience. To visit while in town for the weekend from Ohio was on our list of to-do. We didn’t have a reservation but were welcomed in and able to tour. Which we were grateful for!!

I was not planning on visiting there today but I was in the area and decided to go for it especially because it’s free. The museum was presenting the « Negative Women » consisting of 4 different photographers; Ciara Elle Bryant Tanya Habjouqa Mari Hernandez Letitia Huckaby It consisted of beautiful art and photography with interesting history behind them. I learned about the existence of Afro-Palestinians. The museum also consist of a store where you can buy available art, clothing, jewelry etc.

I visited on a weekday. No waiting period to enter. Great museum but should be named something different bc it mostly exhibits the paintings of one man. Check out room right beside front desk, it is filled with others artists, this was my favorite room. They ask for donations in any amount and to scan qr code go sign in. I was there for about 30 minutes.

There are some great art shows happening here. I appreciate that there’s a dedicated space to promoting the work of African American artists. It’s often artists I’m less familiar with and I’m glad to learn about them here. The building itself has some problems with roof leaks and could use updates, but I know that’s difficult with funding.

It was great to learn about a new-to-me artist, El Franco Lee, II. Depending on when you visit, this may not be the exhibit. The staff was friendly & helpful. The elevator was not working the day we visited, so the experience was limited to the first floor if you had mobility issues. There is no entry fee, but they do ask for donations. There is also a small gift store.

I loved this place. It provides great artwork and even saw a few pieces from John Biggers. Staff is great and friendly. I purchased a few shirts and left a donation as there is not an entrance fee.

My son and I were so impressed with how the art exhibits engaged my granddaughter. And, learning about the artist and their talents and contributions was a great experience. Very clean and well organized with a helpful and knowledgeable staff.

I enjoyed my visit! There were many thought-provoking works that reflect past and current social issues. Non-flash photos are permitted. Amid the Covid19 pandemic, face masks and temperature checks are required upon entry. Prospective visitors must register on the website in advance. Parking and general entry are free; however, donations are accepted.

Houston's Museum of African American Culture is the sister institution to the African American Library, located in the historic Freedman's Town. The Museum boasts a beautifully renovated facility that houses two floors of gallery space and classrooms. Socially engaged exhibitions bring to the fore relevant conversations about African American history and politics, with a keen eye on Houston's specific African American heritage. Come to view the featured Houston artists in the Bert Long Gallery or to participate in the many offerings the museum hosts. Don't forget to sign up for the newsletter and donate to support the institution as much of it's funding is dependent on community support.

An overlooked gem in the city. Host to many great local events, art exhibits and artist lectures, as well as community engagements. The staff are very friendly amd helpful. Perfect place to take a small group of art enthusiasts, young and older. We took our senior citizen group. There is an elevator for those who physically challenged.

This museum is a hidden gem. We went with some friends who were visiting from Arkansas and it was a wonderful and educational experience. It was enlightening and interesting to see Black art and culture on display here. The TV monitor that was on a loop showing one family's experience with police was mind-boggling. It needs closed captioning since it was sometimes hard to hear what was being said over the music that was being played as part of the documentary. Entry is free but there is a place to give donations. There is also Black art, clothing, jewelry and purses available for purchase. It's a small museum but packed with Black culture.

I try to visit an African American Museum in all the cities and places I visit. Here we visited and encountered the works of Ellsworth Ausby and Afi Ese. The artworks are distinct and piercing. It was a pleasure to visit and see artworks from our culture. The building could use some renovations. Donate to the cause so we can continue to experience the arts of our time and culture.

Good museum they have different exhibitions from different artists. We saw the Franco Lee III exhibit and it was great. Two floors with art everywhere free entry but they do accept donations. Definitely an experience to share throughout the year.

Came in from Seattle and looked forward to bringing my daughters here for their birthday weekend. Walked in the door and in was empty, no customers….. great the whole place to ourselves. Was told the card machine is down, cash app or zell…. Give you the best price which the quote was higher then online. Went to pay online, was then told the manager prefers if you pay them directly…… back to cash app/zell etc. Was not comfortable with how things felt, the one thing my twins wanted to do, they said no to at this point, no longer were comfortable.

El Franco Lee II is a very talented young man of my generation. I’ve never know of him until I enter the museum today but very well respected. Thank you for being so transparent in your work. The staff were very respectful and alerting when warning us of graphics. Great gift shop and amazing art work of #SandraBland.

I Check the museum’s website this morning it shows opening at 11:00. I drove 30 minutes to arrive at the museum and it is closed. I called the phone number and got a voicemail indicating the museum open at 11:00. I just checked the website now it indicates the museum is temporarily closed. This should have been updated yesterday. I am very disappointed I waited my time.

This was an awesome experience! There was a $5 donation asked of us. The art was awesome and the history behind it was awesome. There was a small gift shop with items made solely from African Americans.

I wish that I was able to visit. I came today to visit, just to find out that they are closed for a special event. This is the first time in several years I was off of work during their business hours. So I’m definitely disappointed. Doesn’t look like I’ll be able to experience it. I travelled over 50 minutes just to come. I would definitely advise calling ahead for make sure that they are actually open during business hours. Can’t trust times online. But I appreciate the concept in the city.

The museum was beautiful for what it was, it was more of a gallery than a museum. What was on display was beautifully orchestrated and told a brief story from the viewpoint of the selected artist. The gift shop had some one of a kind items that I was more than happy to pay for. Very much needed for the culture, keep up the great work!

I didn't get the experience of Black excellence coming in the front door. The host was definitely below average in greeting. A bit of an attitude. Other than that it can be worth a visit.

Great variety of exhibitions. Lots to see around Houston music & culture, great contemporary art, futuristic Lego piece, and all rooted in history. Worth a visit, and I learned a lot.

stopped in while visiting Houston and was definitely impressed. it’s a small museum, with a little parking lot out back, build into some kind of an old building with exquisite and unique architecture. I’d say looking through everything shouldn’t take much longer than an hour or so. but an hour well spent! the Afro-futurism exhibit available when I visited was enchanting, but all of the exhibits just displayed such talent and skill going into pieces with haunting commentary or emotive expressions of the hope and dreams of a community. the museum doesn’t charge necessarily for entry, but asks a $5 donation per person, and for sign-ins, and that donation is more than deserved. my only complaint is that the building itself wasn’t easy to navigate for those with disabilities, but all things considered it was a worthwhile visit- I certainly am taking home some names of artists I’d love to see more from!
