Great place to spend some time to learn about not only the role ships played in Texas history, but in history in general. Displays of interest included war ships, explorer ships, cargo ships and many others. Very family friendly; there is even a room especially for the littles. I attended on a free day, but admission is usually charged. Parking is free! I will definitely make it back.

Really great time getting to read and learn about the nautical history of Houston. It's worth it to get a private guide as they have lots of info and it's not a very large museum but I still spent about 2 hours inside just reading. Also it's cheap and has AC and if you need to get out of the sun, come give it a visit! And make sure to come on events they have!

This is an overlooked attraction. There’s some really interesting stuff here about the Texas Navy, ships and shipping. As you would expect it heavily focused on Texas and that’s great because it gives the exhibit focus. While your in the area take a trip down the street to El Tiempo for an excellent meal after your visit.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The first thing that struck me was the high ceilings and beautiful lighting. This is a small museum, but chock full of fascinating exhibits and history. It's all on one floor and easy to navigate independently or with the help of one of the well-informed docents. The ship models, spanning the history of water travel, are magnificent. A really cool feature is a big screen showing the actual ship positions of vessels currently in the Gulf. You, or your kiddos can operate the keyboard to click on the ships, see where they're from, what type vessel, etc., in REAL TIME. As a grandmother of kids ranging from 2 to 17, I would say that this museum would hold the interest of a 3rd grader, or 9 yo and older. It's GREAT for adults of all ages! There is a kid's area with a hand's-on ship's wheel, costumes, art area, etc. The restrooms are nice and the parking is superb; free, one level and right in front of the entry. Expect to spend about an hour to 1.5 hours here, unless you're a mariner, in which case, you could spend all day.

It is a very small museum but full of very interesting maritime history. It will be moving to a larger location soon.

The preeminent educational resource focused on the role that the Houston Ship Channel plays regionally and nationally.

This museum offered a really interesting view on Houston's maritime history. The people that worked here were very knowledgeable and friendly (always a plus at any museum). They are working on making a new and fresh building, and I know it's going to be an amazing upgrade!

This place was great if you have interest in the topic. The people working there are very knowledgeable and do a wonderful job in running the museum. It's an especially great place if you have young children who like maritime topics. The museum has a kids corner where they can make their own little boat or play pretend with their models and costumes.
