The two ladies who work at the information desk in the lobby of the hospital made me feel so special today when I asked to sign up for the choice program and they sent me to building 121 across the road about a half a mile away and I get over all the way over there and the doors are locked cardboard signs hanging off the window saying building closed and I'll walk all the way back and tell him that the building's closed just to see them smirk and whisper amongst themselves back there and laugh. It made me feel so special today that I thought about giving him a little thank you I was going to grab my 16 lb sledge hammer out the back of my truck roll my window down and drive real slow down every aisle and just swing that sledgehammer as hard as I can to every vehicle I can reach just to say thank you for making me feel so special. I guess it's just absolutely too much to ask an employee to treat other people with basic human dignity.

I am pleased with the quality of healthcare at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. Dr. Babin Kurian has been my primary care physician (PCP) for nine years. He is an excellent physician. I am followed by cardiology, audiology, optometry and dermatology. I have never had a problem getting an appointment and have satisfied with the care I received from each of these clinics I received a pacemaker and had a ruptured appendix removed in 2013. After the appendectomy, I spent ten days as an inpatient. I was satisfied with the quality of care on both occasions. In January 2022, my pacemaker battery was replaced. Once again, the care I received from the doctors, nurses and support staff was excellent. Patient parking lots fill up quickly in the mornings. I try to schedule my appointments for about 1:00 or 2:00 p.m. to avoid the frustrating search for a parking space.

I went into the ER 11/5 and had the most unprofessional and negative medical experience I have ever had! I came in with a swollen eye, NO voice, and in extreme pain. After waiting for over an hour I asked one of the nurses if she knew how much longer it would be and she replied "oh I guess they forgot". So when the PA, I think I'm not sure he never introduced himself to me. He never came within 5-6 feet of me. Never listened to my lungs, there no examination at all. I was explaining the pain and he decided to send me for a ct scan even though I explained to him I know it wasn't kidney stones as I have had them in the past. But whatever, nice to rule it out I guess. Got back and once again after waiting for a while I asked the nurse how much longer and she replied, well all of your tests are back so I'm not sure. All in the mean time I'm listening to the most unprofessional conversations to be heard in a medical setting. Nurses and other staff members speaking very derogatory about patients including stating their names. It was so disheartening to listen to honestly! When the doctor did finally come and get me he told me my CT results which were negative. He also at that time said to me "what did I expect coming in on a weekend, and there was no one there to help me" Which confused the heck out of me considering its an Emergency room. I ask him about my swollen eye, and he says oh its conjunctivitis which yet again confused the hell out of me considering he never came anywhere close enough to examine my eye. More to the story, but I'm sure my point is getting across. So sad and disappointing how our Veterans are treated and thought about! I wound up at Hermann Memorial the following early morning where I was treated properly!

It has been 3 months since my VA PCP in Texas City has submitted my referral to the VA mental health clinic and I still don't have an appointment despite calling multiple times a week to try to get some help. Had to wait 5 weeks just for them to call and ask if I was still interested in the services. There is no accountability with these people and they clearly don't care for veterans with mental health issues. I got into the dermatologist the same week, but with mental health it is taking MONTHS! Dealing with the VA has been the worst experience.

(ER side) If I could give them a negative rating I would! I’m not even a patient but my significant other is! Needless to say they had him waiting in the hallway in a bed, and a gown on! Why was he unable to get a room like every one else? He was in a room before going to get blood work done! Questioned about it and the ER Nurses came off very dismissive!!! This is no way to treat your Veterans or anyone for that matter. We will be contacting someone that the head of ER on Monday!

Called this morning to make my father a Dr. appt. and the 1st receptionist that answered the phone was rude, the lady she transferred me to was rude. I had to tell her not to be rude to me because I don't want to be rude to her. All I was trying to do was explain to her what was going on and she trying to explain to me her solution. Well at least let me talk, that's called customer service. I stopped trying to explain and just listened. She evidently began to talk calmly without shushing me, like I was her child. I had to call back at 8am to speak to one of the clinics and I spoke to the most sweetest and helpful lady in Clinic 1. Thank you you for generosity and hospitality, the first two ladies need your training. I give you ladies 5 stars.

They don't care. They don't even pretend to care. The veteran suicide rate is what it is because of VA facilities like this one. It takes courage for us vets to ask for help, but the people at this VAMC don't have the compassion or empathy needed to help. It seems like their standard operating procedure is to ignore veterans as long as possible in the hopes that the problem will solve itself. I've been trying to get a mental health appointment for months now to no avail. When I did manage to get a video call appointment, they cancelled it without informing me. I hate this place. All the employees are extremely rude and seem like they hate being there.

Worst health care I’ve ever received. There’s no direct line to your doctors office (1 phone line for the whole hospital). They’ll constantly transfer you (4-5 times until you get hung up on). If you manage to get connected you’ll wait for 1 hour till someone talks to you (currently been waiting for 1 hour and 8 minutes). It takes almost a month or longer to get an appointment. Doctors randomly cancel your appointments on the same day and time the appointment is scheduled. And doctor’s offices will schedule appointments for you without consulting or calling you and you won’t be notified until it’s too late. If you’re a veteran that needs mental health, you might as well go somewhere else. This hospital is impossible to get effective treatment.

I was on the six floor with the worst depression ever. I was there for two weeks but it was the best two weeks ever. I love all the NURSES and DOCTORS. I thank GOD everyday for fighting with THE best Military in the world. I am proud to be a VETERAN.

I was forced to give them one star or it wouldn't post. They deserve negative stars. The doctors there neglected their duties in my husband's case and failed to do Cancer follow-up testing on him and even when he was in constant pain and couldn't hold anything down they still failed to test him for reoccurrence of cancer. He had to go to a civilian hospital to find out what was wrong . He died because they waited too long. After he died and I complained they did an investigation and made me wait a year and a half for benefits and then hid the information from me so I couldn't file for damages. believe me I was definitely entitled to benefits and more. Im disgusted by the people who run that hospital.

We tried to get a referral from community care for an eye exam for a month. We had to reschedule the appointment three times and eventually ended up paying cash for the visit because no one ever followed up and did their job. Dr. Love, and your staff, get it together. Y'all should be ashamed by how you treat your veterans.

The entire VA system is absolutely horrible. No exaggerations. They’re useless. The staff are lazy, incompetent and have no desire whatsoever to help Veterans. It’s an absolute joke. They don’t work in the favor of the veterans, from the doctors all the way down to the receptionist. Every allegation and rumor you’ve ever heard of is true. The system inside is even more corrupt. If I could give negative stars I would. I have never in my life seen a company literally HATE the people they’re meant to help.

"Security" is a joke. yall fought for our freedom for the security from the hospital to trample over those freedoms. Pure tyranny, fire your security if you value the people who served and fought for this country.

We just moved here and I’m out of medications but each person tells me something different about getting refills and nobody will help me. I just broke my foot and have pins (which are coming out) and I still can’t get any help. They couldn’t care less about veterans. And nobody seems to know the correct answer to anything as each person says something different. It’s no wonder why veterans are having so many physical and mental problems!!!! So after begging ANYONE at this VA to look at the pins in my foot, and everyone saying they wouldn’t do anything, I went to UTMB and found out that the VA gave me a staph infection that progressed to osteomyelitis……had I not gone to somewhere that cared, I’d have gone septic and might not be here right now. And now patient advocacy won’t even call me back……these people don’t care if us veterans live or die SMH An update…. Now, on top of the strain infection and the osteomyelitis, I also have septic arthritis 🤬 I found out that one of the doctors that refused to even look at my foot, said it’s because she thought that I just wanted pain meds. To add to things, I got the oral antibiotics that I was prescribed from UTMB, filled at the VA pharmacy and they mislabeled one of them. I, also, found out that I’m going to have to be on antibiotics for another yeast SMH UGH!!!!!! Had ANY of the 3 doctors that I asked to look at the pin site, actually looked at it, it never would have gotten/progressed to how bad it is now.

If I could give this place a negative zero I would! I visited my dying cousin 8/1/22 and his room was nasty. There were dried bloody swabs and blood droppings on the floor and dried blood on his linen!! I was appalled at the level of care and lack of concern for keeping his room clean! I was disgusted that this place calls themselves a hospital! Yuck! 🤢🤮 Sadly he passed this morning. Do better VA! You should be ashamed!!

The doctors here are very rude and incompassionate. They have repeatedly spoken to my husband as if he were stupid and a child. We moved his care to the Charles Wilson Clinic where he finally received wonderful services. I would never recommend Houston to a Veteran that needed medical services.

My pcp is great but having to be bounced around from place to place on the phone is really annoying. A lot of the staff there that aren't professionals like doctors or nurses are always rude and don't know what they're doing. I was told to wait by someone who just mentioned she clocked in and said "they can wait I gotta eat my food". If care is what you want you won't get it here. The VA needs a whole revamp.

To be fair, much of the VA's infamous reputation is not a total reflection of the staff. As with many government institutions, you can expect long waits, unnecessary red tape, and a number of systemic issues but the majority of staff I've had experience with is great. However, I will slam their mental health services. There definitely feels like a disregard for those seeking quality mental health treatment. Nevertheless the amenities of the VA Hospital include: 🔸️Cafeteria 🔸️Small Gym on location 🔸️Barbershop 🔸️A small PX Exchange Store 🔸️Multiple food kiosks 🔸️Multiple vendor kiosks 🔸️Weekday and Weekend Pharmacy 🔸️Basketball court (that no one uses) Definitely a good resource for veterans without private care options. The institution has the potential to be great, but there's a lot of work ahead for a more perfect VA.

After I got over covid I had respiratory issues. Went to emergency to get a new prescription inhaler and they ended up keeping me. The doctors, nurses and rest of the staff on 2A treated my wife and I very well. They all went above and beyond what they needed to. Thank you all for being so humane. This all happened at a very difficult time in our lives. With their help and support we managed to get treatment I needed without having to be concerned about my wife.

This place has sickening me today. My husband went to the VA emergency room this morning. As we waited in the waiting room. Staff came out to talk to patients about they, like details that other ppl shouldn’t hear. It was inappropriate and HIPPA violation 100%. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing and seeing. My husband came home with the IV stem still in his arm after being seen. This place needs to really regroup and take care of our Veterans better. Never seen so many unconcerned medical stuff like that. Unacceptable Houston.

The Downtown Houston, Michael E. DeBakey VA is getting better at serving it's veterans... Give it time folks, it takes more than one person to make it happen including ourselves. One team, one dream. I'm currently admitted to the hospital at the moment. The team here is amazing. I have proudly served our nation in the US ARMY, god bless America our home sweet home.

I am traveling veteran. I stopped to try get heart meds. I went to the pharmacy and was told I had to go wait at the ER to be seen. My meds are in the system I told them but they couldn’t prescribe them to me unless I was seen by a doctor. I went a hospital in woodland Texas at the emergency room. I was told to leave if I did not use there mask but I had my own and many other people were coming in and out with theirs but because I am a veteran I was told to leave the hospital. Thanks a lot VA hospital in Houston Texas.

Maybe the worst hospital. I have issues and the doctors can’t go up or down one floor , there is road block after road block and no one wants to help. I can’t stand the VA I want to go to a doctors office where I’m treated like a customer that they want to help. Rather then some number they are just trying to see to get through the day. The neuro guys think they are gods gift to us all so just be thankful they graced you with their presence

Valocchi has the worse team and it makes her look incompetent. My wife has been and currently still is having nerve issues and it has been a run around from the beginning. I was the one who suggested she be seen at a V.A. and mostly because I have been treated in a timely manner with dignity and respect. I am 100% disabled and I really am starting to believe that is the only reason why my experience is different and it just shouldn’t be. Now if I were to come up there and wreak havoc, I would be deemed as the problem within a problem. No husband wants to see his wife suffer on top of being passed around like a hot potato within what is supposed to be a respectful institution. If you are not 100%, I strongly suggest you get seen for emergencies at an outside hospital that actually cares. I’ve heard plenty of stories about V.A. Medical Centers but never thought it was still happening let alone be happening to my wife.

I have had appointments made and canceled with never once being notified. I try and call, and I get an atomated message that repeats itself over and over. I try secure messaging, and not only is my doctor not on the drop-down list, but when I message they state they need my doctor's name. I do not know it, and cannot get anyone to answer the phone. Update: Each time someone answered, they said please hold and hung up on me! And they wonder why veteran suicide is so high? We cannot even get the basic of care.

I'm 76 years old and having to go to the VA hospital more and more. The visits are dreaded. The staff especially, the nurses and aides are more and more lacking care..hostile even. Hateful at times...forgetting we are the patients and they are there to take care of us. I'm not the only one that feels this way. We vets compare notes often. I dread having to go. The ER are so- so likewise my primary doctor...but the treatment while we are hospitalized are horrid. . The sitters that were assigned to me hated to get off their azzes , aregued amoungest each other hashing over their own personal gripes. They don't care about us any more. I have an appointment Thursday and plan to talk to my primary and seek other avenue s for changing hospital care.

I've been pleased with my healthcare here. The problem is parking. Cincinnati VA managed to build a big new parking garage. Why is parking STILL an issue here? Isn't this the nation's biggest VA campus? So why isn't there a new multilevel parking garage here? You have to arrive here a couple hours early and wait. Handicap slots are also limited. It's a shame that more can't or won't be done to alleviate this issue after all these years.

I just had a tumor removed and I couldn't believe the the things I witnessed. Blood all over the bathroom seat that I was sharing, nurse infighting with each other. Pouring of drained blood into the same sinks that we brush our teeth in. They incorrectly installed IV and they leaked. There solutions was to just put more tape on them. Had me looking like the mummy.. Nobody changed my bandages until the day I left and I was there 3 days. I had surgery at 7am they had me lost in the system for over 8 hours, they just forgot about me.Tell me you don't want to give me medical services without saying it. Hiring people in position that are not ready. My wife couldn't believe what was going on.

I haven’t even visited and called to get information that they insist they can provide and help when a veteran is in need. Well in my times of need and no other place to turn to I called and the operator was extremely rude with me and didn’t even give the conversation a chance after 2 sentences before hanging up and directing my call to An unanswered line after asking for a supervisor or someone better suited to help. I will not speak for the doctors, purely the customer service.

Went to the ER for a concern sat there and watched a nurse yell from across the room for patients, watch the same nurse tell the reception at the admissions desk that she was NOT going to assistant a patient to the bathroom, the patient was in pain and they “the ER workers” placed her in this rolling mobility chair that she could not move alone, the patient was also told this, thankfully someone else’s family member assisted her. The ER was dark, smelled and dirty. The nurses on duty this evening stood behind the counter located behind the admissions desk and in the entry door to the areas where the patients will be seen and yell last names as if they are herding cattle. One nurse #1 couldn’t pronounce the last name of the patient correctly, patient assumed the nurse was trying to pronounce her name, so she asked if she had the first name, the nurse had to go back to the back then returned and told the woman to come back but the lady COULD NOT role herself back due to the chair they had placed her in, the same nurse just stood in the door watching the woman struggle finally another male patient roles the lady back, this same nurse did this to an elderly male patient who CLEARLY needed assistance rolling his wheelchair back. This place needs a good personnel overhaul. The nurses excuse is that they are short handed, these actions have nothing do with being short handed this is all bedside manner! This all happened 8/20/2022 between 8pm-1030. VA must do better with those they hire to care for our Veterans! We have served so that they can serve and on top of that some still pay for services provided as retirees so hire quality people who provide quality care and people who truly care about people. These are the people who represent the VA during times of need. Clean the facility to the standards of a hospital.

On this Good Friday, I'm appreciative to the ER and 6A staff for their dedication and caring for the patients. I'm wonderfully surprised of how they been. Nurse bed 6 on 4/2/23 and nurses of 6A all this wk as well doctors. I'm thankful to your hard work and taking care of my love one.. our Veterans put their time, life mentally and physically to protect our freedom and the least we can do is to give them respect and treat them with kindness and care now in their time of need. These nurses and doctors are doing just that and hope that we continue with that compassion 🙏u ❤️

This place is horrible. Parking is bad. Appt system bad. Wait time bad. Played phone tag for 2 mths trying to get inserts. Call twice about it; was placed on hold and conveniently the call dropped. TWICE! Called for appt for med refill and was told appt not needed but meds would be issued… Been waiting for 2wks for med refill. I have never had such a terrible experience until this Houston VA system. Can’t even contact community care for appt because they dont answer or again the call drops. It’s crazy that Vets have to suffer like this.

I’ve had to deal with ortho, especially the hand clinic. It’s a mess. You can only be seen on Friday mornings and they don’t offer virtual appointments (I live 40+ minutes away) even though on the VA website they showcase virtual appointments like it’s going out of style. Needless to say I just scheduled an appointment with my primary care in Kingwood and was referred to the hand orthopedics at Fondren. Don’t waste your time with the VA. Some aspects of the VA hospital are ok but scheduling an appointment convenient for yourself is unobtainable.

I give the Cardiac dept a (5), but the clinic 2 doctors could be more thorough. As i give them (3) I spent 45 minutes on hold only to be hung up on and have to call back and spend another 40 minutes on hold to be transfered to another department and spend 15 minutes on hold to get an answer. Im sorry but veterans deserve better doctors then this. Shame on you doctor.

The night crew in the ER are really nasty individuals. If I was good with me I probably would have not made it to see the next day. The front desk lady is rude. She got into it with almost everyone that came in there. Even people walking in for work. She got into it with a patient as well. I would ask her a question and she would ignore me. This is typically the attitude of most of the employees that work there. In my opinion, the VA is cursed! It's like the walking Dead in there. When I worked there I would hear people talking about the veterans all the time. They do not care about the veterans, they care about a paycheck. I barely go there anymore and now I'm going to avoid it at all cost.

The 3 P’s in customer service will make every organization successful. A lot of “other’ VA employees can learn a lot from her, only wish she could be cloned a thousand times over.

Trying to figure out what my month long sickness is, so I've been at the lab twice, now in the x-ray department, to do a cat scan and an ultrasound. Been here since after 7 AM, and it's close to 1 PM and we are moving along. Once I get my cat scan completed, it's on to the cafeteria, then circle back to my primary care clinic to follow up and hopefully get some results.

When I first returned to Houston in 2006, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Hospital was an Excellent Facility to visit. Through out the complex, it was very tidy and clean, the Staff were informed, helpful and friendly and it was a busy atmosphere thru the day into the early evening. There was a constant flow of Veterans (some were ill or recovering residents) as well as Retired Vets/Vendors lined up selling items through the back corridor by the cafeteria, occasionally you could hear/see a musician playing and selling CD’s. Occasionally you might have to wait for your appointment but most of the time you didn’t have to wait very long. That was then and this is now: 2023 while reading the reviews I was not surprised at all by the long waits for appointments, misinformed or no information on procedures/surgeries, dropped calls when scheduling appointments and difficult parking situation and staff having attitudes because they are understaffed or overworked. Recently I went to an early morning appointment, and while having breakfast in the cafeteria I started to cry because I was thinking about all the Vets that used to frequent the halls, what has become of our Nation’s War Veterans…. I Pray for our United States of America, all the Veterans that served this Country, and all the Staff who work within the VA System, that we all have the patience to get where we’re going and the strength and attitude to help us keep going and make our surroundings a better place. God Bless our U.S.A. and our Nation’s Veterans and ALL who stand for Freedom.

Those hospital has always been really good to me and the staff helpful and kind. Compared to other civilian places I have been to, I'd rather come here. Parking sometimes is an issue, but when you have veterans coming for all over, it's to be expected and it happens. They have made improvements on that since I have been coming here and I applaud their efforts. No place is perfect, no place ever will be. Thank you Houston for all the help you have finally given me.

I don't know what happened but they use to be great for the most part. For the last 2yrs the pharmacy has been taking 3 to 6 months to refill a prescription. When you call the put you in a never ending circle of lies saying they just ship your prescription yesterday but it never arrives. I've call over 12 times with the same results. The only way to get your prescription filled is to physically visit your doctor and force them to do their job. I think they have some kind of issue with the veterans they are serving and have no particular concerns about the health of their patients and at times are very rude and dismissive to people trying to adhere with their doctors instructions. Very unprofessional and there is no course of action to address this situation.

As with any huge organization, it is a hit and miss with customer service. I would like to give kudos to Dr. Yang and Dr. Chai in Surgical Clinics for their friendliness and professionalism. They address our concerns and ensure that we receive thorough medical services. I would also like to give high marks to information desk staff because every time we ask for directions to any area in the humongous building they do it with smile and kindness. Finally, I would like to thank Linda and Derneen at Surgical Clinic reception desk. Linda is prompt in acknowledging and helping patient who waits in line. Derneen is very knowledgeable about procedures and provides all pertinent information to ensure that we schedule all follow ups before surgery. These are the good people that we have had personal interactions. There are a few individuals who are unpleasant but shall remain nameless.

Not the best VA hospital but not the best. Many specialty clinics are congested causing veterans to have to wait sometimes months to be seen or have to get referred to community care. The parking situation is an absolute mess. Even if you show up 30mins before your appt you can spend that time looking for parking.

One thing though. Your Valet is about as rude as they come. Wish that could be corrected

It’s a step up from the Texas City CBOC. There are a handful of doctors who genuinely care about you! The others will try to sink ya. Watch your back and QUESTION everything!

I cannot say enough good things about Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. It is likely the best in the state, if not in the nation. - The covered parking lot for patient that is NEAR the main entrance complete with valet parking - Dr. Marnie Aguasvivas-Bello is a compassionate professional. I did not even get this level of care during active duty. She took meticulous history and did thorough examinations, did quick referral for labs, pharmacy, radiology, ophthalmology and so on. She mailed the result and adjusted necessary medication promptly. I was speechless as I was able to get the prescription the same day within minutes from the pharmacy, then another one in the mail within days - Likewise, the asian doctor ophthalmologist (sorry I forgot your name!) and med student were very thorough and patiently explained all the tests and what's next. I filled knowledge gaps that I never learned in14 years of healthcare career. - The phlebotomist and xray techs worked with precision and speed - The registration and ID dept got me health ID quickly in the mail even after a computer glitch -The myhealthVet website is easy to navigate to access prescriptions, appointments, lab results etc. Once again, this level of care surpasses anything I saw in active duty and I was in the medical department so I am thoroughly impressed and grateful. Thank you so very much!

Wow... I went from first class care with the W. G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center - Salisbury, NC to horrible care with this VA system in Houston. It took almost 6 months and a Congressman to assist me in getting the care I need. To top it off, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center is going to be facing some legal battles due to recent events involving other Veterans enrolled with care through this facility. If you live in Texas, I highly suggest you trying another VA network closer to Waco. If you don't mind driving, stay away from the Houston VA network.

On 11/29/21 I went to the VA hospital in Houston, and checked into the emergency room. The staff was Very helpful and accessed me in less than an hour and sent me to radiology for a ct scan. The technician was also very respectful and polite. From there I went to the ENT clinic where I met Sam ( Samantha)> She was very easy to talk to and showed me the images that had been taken and prepared me for a biopsy for the Pathology Dr.'s. The VA Houston is the best hospital I have ever been to.. The Valet parking is very much appreciated. K Streets US Army 67-70

I am a 49 year cancer survivor of a. Variety of cancer types ( likely from A.O. exposure), and continue to have new ones appear. Since 1982, I have gone to M.D. Anderson for my cancer treatment, of course at a price. I thought, well, why not. They are said to be the best. All the while my Primary Care Physician was at the VA. AFTER YEARS of " putting my toes in the water", I have now convinced myself of the quality care available at our Houston VA. For years I have taken time to write commendations on the lab personnel and their "sticks", the pharmacy for their assistance, but I now want to tell it to you all. We have the best VA and medical professionals we could ask for. I wish I had time to shake each of your hands ( with gloves, of course) and say thank you for being there for us Vets.
