This is an absolutely massive world class museum. Everybody that's visiting Seoul should put time aside to come visit this place. Ichon subway station gets you inside from the station directly. Best part about this museum is that it's FREE, except the special seasonal exhibits. It's also indoors with nice AC, so an ideal place for families during Seoul's crazy hot summer days. At 8 pm they have a really nice free light show at the pagoda. Highly recommend this place, you won't be disappointed.

Beautiful and modern building that holds years of Korean history. It’s very interesting, and to be honest you don’t need to spend hours to see everything, so with half a day or less you’ll be able to see it all.

The National Museum of Korea is an impressive place where art and archeology meet history. Entry to all permanent exhibitions is free of charge. The museum itself is quite large and made of multiple buildings, you need to allow at least 4-5 hours to see most of it. You'll get to learn about the rich history of Korea all while enjoying the astonishing architecture and beautiful nature that surrounds the museum. They also have some robot guides that you can ask, which made the experience very fun.

Absolutely amazing museum that's completely FREE! Beautiful architecture and the design of the building and the pond in front is stunning. The museum contains a comprehensive historical account of Korea and also contains some international influenced exhibits/galleries of the neighboring countries/areas. The impressive digital 360 degree projection exhibit is a highlight that transforms the room that you're in and takes you to another dimension.

The museum contains over 310,000 pieces in its collection with about 15,000 pieces on display at one time. It displays relics and artifacts throughout six permanent exhibition galleries such as Prehistory and Ancient History Gallery, Medieval and Early Modern History Gallery, Donation Gallery, Calligraphy and Painting Gallery, Asian Art Gallery, and Sculpture and Crafts Gallery. It is the sixth largest museum in the world in terms of floor space. In order to protect the artifacts inside the museum, the main building was built to withstand a magnitude 6.0 Richter Scale earthquake. The display cases are equipped with shock-absorbent platforms. There is also an imported natural lighting system which utilizes sunlight instead of artificial lights and a specially designed air-conditioning system. The museum is made from fire-resistant materials and has special exhibition halls, education facilities, a children's museum, huge outdoor exhibition areas, restaurants, cafes, and shops.

(Translated by Google) As long as the head of the Curator Research Office, who insists on researching and exhibiting archeology, history, and art history, which is the role of the National Museum of Korea, is present, it is considered to be the most authoritative museum in Korea where you can trust and appreciate the exhibits of the National Museum. As seen in the Great Goryeo Exhibition, the more you look at the Buddhist paintings, celadon and metal crafts that preserved the identity of the Goryeo Dynasty, the more you feel the outstanding artistic value, and the invention of metal type, which preceded Western Germany, increased the enthusiasm for learning by scholars and monks, the knowledge groups of the day, and manuscript demands. I think it was because there was a great need to print many books because it could not be covered. It brings joy to the news that the National Museum of Korea has purchased a gold bronze Buddha statue from the Kansong Museum of Art that was inspected at an auction. At the National Museum, a clown protruding from the National Museum with a delicate smile is expected to see the Buddha statues 284 and 285, treasures that resemble the Korean people of ancient times and give them a close feeling.

After two visits, 5 hours each, I almost finished the first floor of the museum. It was very interesting, a lot of information on history of Korea, with a lot of historical and art objects, makes you feel the history going around you. Definitely would return here if I had more time in Korea!

Exceptional in every way; perfectly curated, comfortable, and accessible. The grounds are immaculate and well worth a walk around, even if it’s cold. Amazing that it’s free, it would be worth $$$. Important cultural history carefully protected and preserved for posterity; what could be more important? A must-visit.

Lovely historical museum. I learned about Korean history. This museum has great artifacts & a good shop too. The workers speak English. They were all nice too. Easy access on the subway. In the Club room at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul, the staff helped me with very specific subway directions, which I totally appreciated, since the subways are confusing to me, & they have so many lines. I was also given much help by the Club room staff. I bought my return airport shuttle ticket in the lounge. This hotel stay makes me really appreciate gold elite Marriott status. It give you so much value for the $ you spend. I did not know before this trip. I highly recommend The Plaza Hotel in Seoul, especially if you have Gold Elite status.

The outside area of the museum is beautiful, and the inside exhibits of Korea's history are also great if you're into history and relics! There were also multimedia displays and animations that completely transport you. A lovely place to visit, and it doesn't even require a ticket except for the special exhibit, which was on the Aztecs when I went, but was sold out, so I didn't see inside.

A gigantic (and free) museum that covers Korean history from prehistoric times to the mid-20th century. They have amazing collections that are highly informative and awe-inspiring. You can easily spend two 4-hour days here. In one 4-hour visit you can see probably 1/3 of the museum’s items. Definitely worth the visit. An absolute gem.

I really can't get enough of this museum. Everytime I visit Seoul I look forward to my adventure here. Have I seen the entire museum after three visits? No. I suppose it is more than possible but I never want to rush my trip here. It's wonderful that the country sees the benefit of making the arts via this museum available to all. There is no admission to the regular collection, the larger part of the museum. There are nominal fees for the special exhibits. My visits always include a few moments in some of the gift shops. There are a lot of great things to buy here. And yes, they may cost just a little more here. Have noticed the quality is good and the treasures should last a bit longer. Besides, it's nice to know your purchases are really a donation towards the museum. The cafeteria and tea rooms are lovely. My meals or snacks are always enjoyed. And the views from them are so relaxing. Be sure to take a moment to relax in one of them. The museum is so well thought out. The digital interactive displays are ever changing, entertaining, and filled with beauty. Find those rooms tucked away here and there. Be sure to save time to meander around the beautiful grounds too!

Famous among locals and visited by every age group. Very knowledgeable about historical facts and activities. On the day of my visit, I saw many children visiting the museum with theor teachers. 1. There is no ticket for visiting the museum but there was a ticket for a " special exhibition" which is affordable (~5000KRW for an adult). 2. During the visit to the Children's Museum, we were told to reserve it in advance to visit and also it is suitable for kids aged 8 years and above. 3. The parking is not free. It would cost you according to the time.

The works collected by Empress Pyothor the Great and Empress Yekaterina around 1900 and the high-quality works collected by nobles at that time were able to appreciate the masterpieces that were not easily accessible. This is by far one of my favorite museums ever. It is incredibly beautiful and the exhibitions both the temporary and the permanent ones were fantastic. This museum portrays the history and growth of Korea with incredible exhibits that go in order on the main floor on both sides the richess of history and culture along with pride and respect for their country is outstanding. The exhibitions on the world were really good and I absolutely loved the ceramic one alongside with the Buddha exhibit. Super recommended. It is very easy to get there by bus or subway and tickets arr cheap. (No more than 6.000 won)

Very nice museum of Korean history. Lovely landscaping and scenic views to be had even before you enter. Inside, the museum itself is of a modernistic architecture and photographic in itself. The exhibitions and exhibits were very informative and I appreciated the English translations. So many amazing things to see. You can easily spend a few hours here wandering around the various floors and exploring the outside as well. They have a children's museum area as well, but we did not go to that area. You can easily get to the Museum by train. Love the Seoul train system, really easy once you've ridden it once or twice.

Come for the history, stay for the flowers! It's a huge place, three floors with cafes and food court. Gift shop is cool too. They have immersive digital exhibitions and multi language tours. Not to mention helpful robots gliding about. But the flowers outside, during spring time, is amazing! There are private nooks as well to just enjoy the scenery. Oh plus it's all free!

Note that it's free to enter the museum. There is a mostly covered walkway from the subway until you are quite near the Museum. There is a nice lake with a Chinese type Pergola outside the museum. English audio guide is via an app. You can select the corresponding display with the explanation. There is actually sufficient English to help visitors understand the displays even without the audio guide. Ample toilets and water refill spots as well as cafes and even a food court.

This is a MUST go to place if you're in Seoul! You get such a great admiration for the history and culture of the country. There are so many exhibits, artifacts and events for any and everyone. They also have audio guides in different languages (i recommend downloading the 'exhibition' app for korean museums, and bring headphones). If you plan on doing this place in a day, go as soon as they open because there are 3 floors in the main museum and 2 in the special exhibit building. And the best part, the main museum is free! So if you're in Seoul, go here. If you're a history nut like me, you won't regret it.

Spent about 3 hours in this museum. The exterior itself was amazing and beautiful. Inside, you'll experience a very extensive museum. And it's free! Though there might be some special exhibits where you'll have to pay. There are plenty of rest areas inside the museum that feel like little study places. You can actually go here if you need some peace and quiet. There are also cafes / restaurants in the complex.

An immersive and beautifully curated encapsulation of Korean and East Asian history, with digital experiences that are pretty much unrivalled on an international level. This is the best microcosm of what Korea strives to be as a society; engaging, proud, technically advanced, and respectful to past, present, and future. I'd recommend splitting your visit over multiple days as there are simply too many intricate and amazing exhibits to view in merely a few hours. There are also facilities and restaurants on site. I would definitely pay up to $50 per person to enter, and the fact that it's free is the cherry on top of this amazing must visit destination.

national treasures of Korea The National Museum of Korea houses a diverse collection of Korea's treasures. I think the treasures show a rich history of the Korean Peninsula and Korean's aesthetic talents and the point of view about beauty. Currently, the museum offers a free admission to anyone though, it would be better for the museum to charge admission like other national or famous museums worldwide.

Seoul Land is an amusement park opened in 1987, in Gwacheon, a city in Gyeonggi-do province, South Korea. It is located in the Seoul Grand Park complex. It opened just before the 1988 Summer Olympics. It has about 40 rides, including roller coasters, and movie theaters. Seasonal festivals are held in the park. It is smaller than Everland, but closer to Seoul, about one hour away from downtown. Approximately 3–3.5 million people visit the park in a year.Roughly a third of its 300,000 meter square is green space, the rest being packed with the attractions. Seoul Land, Seoul Grand Park, and the main branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art are all located in the Seoul Grand Park complex. Visitors may buy general admission tickets or one-day unlimited passes. General admission allows free entry to most rides. The unlimited passes allow almost all rides to be taken for free, but exhibitions, performances, and certain other attractions have additional charges despite the unlimited pass. Children aged 2 and under are allowed in for free.

This place was amazing. It is absolutely enormous and... it's free! The suggested course starts from the very beginning of people in general in the region and then early Korea and goes all the way through. Unfortunately, I only had time to see the first floor (took about 1.5hrs) so next time I'm in Korea, I will be back to finish. Korea did a great job with this museum.

Intersting place to visit. However, while it is quite big, I'd advice to not spend too much time there (if you visit Seul for just a couple of days and have some time constraints). Around 1-2 hours are sufficient to visit the most interesting exhibitions.

Amazing structure right in the middle of the city. Free access to everyone and easily reachable by subway. Blown away by the sheer size of the surrounding area with large open spaces. If you are a resident this should be one of the quick getaways from the city life. The museum is mostly concentrated on the prehistoric aspects. Lot of educational aspects. Saw many school going children perhaps with teachers. There is also a children's museum but need to book it in advance from the websites. You should be able to book it as you reach there too. There is a coffee shop and convenience store just nearby. So food and coffee is not an issue. You can try to explore the war museum which is also nearby.

A good museum yes, worth going if you have time and want to see the area. But not an amazing museum. Many of the most interesting pieces are on loan from the moma (pretty much the entire East Asian wing). And while there is a great collection of calligraphy. The pieces beyond that leave something to be desired.

Great collection of relics throughout Korean history, tasteful minimalist design, a lot of great explanations although not all plaques had their translation in English. The museum has 3 floors all showcasing different things and is free to visit for the normal exhibitions (you only pay for the special exhibitions). Overall really great museum.

It is one of the best museums around the world. Every time I visit a country, I make sure to visit the country's representative museum. And for me, the National Museum of Korea is World Class. British Museum offers a lot, but the National Museum of Korea rivals them all, especially when it comes to Aesthetics and facilities.

This place has one of the best museums in South Korea. You can learn about the history of Korea, Japan, and China there. They also have a special exhibition right now, showcasing artifacts from Europe and India. The best part is that you don't need to pay to see some of these valuable artifacts. If you're visiting Seoul, I really suggest checking out this museum. It's a great place to learn and enjoy the histories of different cultures.

This museum is huge, organized and enjoyable to walk through, learning about all the history of Korea and then some. A great rainy day activity. It definitely helped that I had someone actually from Korea with me to further explain different items so that I could get a better picture of the history and things being displayed even though I could read the descriptions myself.

Getting here is quite easy. Opposite the museum is the bus stop. No need to buy tickets to visit. In the museum you can hire a tour guide to introduce you. If you come from outside, you can take the elevator to get to the museum Many treasures are displayed from many countries, beautifully arranged and presented The lighting is reasonably arranged and not too bright, the space here is quite quiet Next to the museum there is a convenience store where you can rest and eat, and in front of the museum there is a very large lake where you can sit.

The museum is free and you don't need a ticket to walk in but you do need one for the special exhibits on the left. The building is very accessible by subway and is very clean and modern. They had maps in different languages but the recommended starting point is on the opposite end of the building instead of closest end to where you get the maps which is a bit counterintuitive. They had a ton of interesting exhibits but the layout of each room made it difficult to go through in a smooth way. Not sure if it's because not everything has English so I just didn't understand it, but some exhibits seemed out of place to the sign that was being shown.

I found the ancient history part very interesting but they delved way to hard into pottery which I couldn't care for. The pottery part was over half the museum. Otherwise beautiful architecture and the museum forest trail at the front entrance was fantastic in fall colours. The food court was mediocre.

It took about 4 hours to look around only in 1st floor. Remember this museum has up to 3rd floor.. Recommend this museum to the people interested in Korean history and traditional culture!

Firstly, just the size of the museum was a big wow factor for me. Couldn't think a museum could be so fancy and elegant, but also this big!! Secondly, the way the museum was laid out was very minimalistic, but very well presented. It seemed that every exhibition was carefully planned out, which made it so easy to navigate through. Plans to visit this museum? Then you would need a lot of time, because there is a looooooot of things to look at.

My familly had a happy day at Seoul Land. A good place for chiIdren. I booked a ticket on Klook before I started an hour. Tickets are much cheaper than buying directly at Seoul Land gate (44,000W). Tickets can be used within a day, very convenient. As a result, it saves money for games and lunches in Seoul Land. Although not as big as Everland and Lotte Word, I find that there are many interesting games here. My child said he likes to go here more. Easy to go: Line 4 (Blue), Seoul Grand Park Station, exit 2. After that, you can use Elephant train (ticket is just 1.000W / adult and 700W/child, one way)

This museum is a really beautiful building and the grounds were scenic but honestly the content was not super interesting. If you are into old bowls, knives, and other small artifacts, this would be a great place to spend a few hours but after the first couple exhibit rooms we had more than had enough. If you have some extra time it's worth taking a quick walk through, especially since it's free, but it was definitely not my cup of tea. My favourite part was the pagoda outside.

A world-class, iconic, orthodox reservoir of Korea's history and culture. Although museums usually are supposed to be the presenter of arts and objects, one will find this museum as an artwork itself that evokes a feeling of awe, glory, and comfort. Seoul is privileged to have this museum at its heart. The general exhibitions are free and open for public, all the galleries and facilities are superbly maintained, and it's very well connected from the Ichon station.

Must visit if you’re in Seoul. The place was much bigger than I anticipated. It’s free to access, very clean and well organized by the timeline. I spent about three hours and only covered about 1&2 floors. So much to see, and experience. Very educational for adults and kids alike. Masks were required while inside, hand sanitizer was plentiful and the number of guests at a time was limited. Don’t forget the check their famous gift shop

Unlike America where they charge an arm and a leg for admission, this museum was free. We were impressed by the size of it. It took you through Koreas history with many artifacts. I learned a lot! Although we didn't even touch the second floor, we got our monies worth. Oh wait, it was FREE. Come to this beautiful museum and learn!

  • 5/5 Tam V. 1 year ago on Google
Three floors of amazing collection of artifacts and exhibits summarizing South Korea's place in the history of the world. Well-done museum that walks the line between having enough stuff to keep the most avid history buff engaged and being succinct enough to avoid boring the less history-loving family members. Best of all, it's 100% free. The museum is directly accessible from Ichon station and has its own underground entrance connected to the subway station. There are free lockers on-site to store large bags/food/drinks. No food or drinks allowed on the viewing floors. There are three cafes and a restaurant on-site as well as two gift shops. Guided tours and self-guided tours (QR code on phone) are available in English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese (check website ahead of time for guided tour times). Can be covered in 1-4 hours depending on how much of the exhibits you want to take in. There is also a special exhibits hall and children's museum but we did not visit those at the time of this review. We visited midweek and there were multiple school trips visiting so it was a little crowded but not to an unbearable level.

One of the most impressive collections I've seen. Korea has a very rich history and it reflects well in this museum. The 10-story pagoda in the main hall is one of the highlights, as is the intricate bejeweled Shilla crowns. There are also many Buddha statues and scrolls here as well.

Beautiful architecture and public space with the Mirror Pond and nature path. The Museum has a great (free) exhibit of an extensive collection of medieval artifacts and the ticketed exhibit rotates on a regular basis. The Plaza and museum interior is also where BTS filmed their YouTube Graduation 2020 special performance and speech and Seoul Ambassador promo videos.

  • 5/5 Fingal G. 1 year ago on Google
Very beautiful museum of the Korean (and Japanese, Chinese, Roman and Greek) history. Astonishing art, pottery, Buddhas, and many many more things. I really recommend you go here on your visit to Seoul. Most of the museum has free entry, except for some “special exhibitions” that charge a fee to enter, but you can have a very pleasant visit without those exhibitions.

  • 5/5 Meisen W. 1 year ago on Google
A huge museum with an insightful exhibition on Korean national history and artefacts. If there are any special exhibitions, I do recommend booking in advance as those tickets do run out fast. There is also a really beautiful contemplation lake outside the museum. A great place to have a takeaway coffee and contemplate life!

  • 4/5 Yossi K. 9 months ago on Google
Big. This is what comes to mind when I think of this museum. There is so much here that it would take days to see it all. The written descriptions are lacking, so it is better to take an audio guide if you wish to learn more. Small tip: The museum is free to enter. Only special exhibits cost extra. Don't wait in line at the ticket window near the entrance unless you plan on visiting the special exhibits.

Quality museum (and free admission). The museum ground is very large with 3 floors so I recommend spending at least 2 hours here. The museum displays extensive collections of artifacts explaining the history of Korea but also includes history of other regions such as Greece. Went on a weekday and there is no wait to get in. There are a number of kids on group tour but overall the museum isn’t very crowded. There is also paid exhibition (optional) and I agree with other reviews which said that you can still have a good experience with just the free exhibit There is guided tours in multiple languages (limited time availability though) and a few food options inside

Entry to one exhibition hall is free of charge. The exhibition is 3 floors, we explored half a floor for 1 hour because we took our time sightseeing. We had so much fun visiting.

Must go. If you like visiting museums, this could be the only one you need to go in Seoul. However, due to its size, it will take the whole day to visit all 3 floors of exhibitions. It would be nice if you can break it down for 1 days. It is a very nice and very organized museum that’s free for all. Amazing!!!

If you want to explore the whole museum and take your time, be prepared to spend the whole day there. I spent about 5ish hours there and got through only 90% of one (1) side of the museum. The collection of Korean artifacts is amazing and seemingly endless! The gift shop was well stocked and the sales people were very friendly. The food is also surprisingly good and relatively inexpensive.

Excellent museum and surprisingly extremely inexpensive. I considered it my responsibility as a parent of a partly Korean child to take my son to this museum and will be visiting every time I am here. The Museum team did an excellent job in presenting this amazing country's history in a neat and effective way in beautiful interiors. If you only have time for one museum visit during your stay, I would recommend making this museum your choice.

Really big with everything about the history of Korea. All descriptions and what else, are available in english. There is a subway station that leads directly here, so it's easy to reach as well. I would definitely recommend to check it out and expect to be a whole day in there. Especially since it's free entry.

Just stunning! This was the first place we visited upon arriving in Korea, it was a great introduction to this amazing country! We were here for just 1.5 hrs and it simply was not enough, you could spend days wondering and exploring the various exhibits both inside and out. There is a food court area and cafes and modern facilities. If you want an introduction to the Korean society…this is the place.

Beautiful space, nice view point on Seoul Tower. Modern location and compact museum- exhibitions are well organized. We spent 1,5 hour there, couldn’t see everything but highlights.

There is a massive free exhibit that will literally take all day to see. Has several famous showcases that are a must-see. At the time of my visiting, there was a special exhibit from London going on featuring impressive and utterly gorgeous renaissance art. Special exhibits cost a small sum of money, but with how informative the exhibit was I would have happily paid even more.

One of the free museums in Korea, this huge museum is inside a serene park, and has an amazing amount of exhibits to look at. They range from Korean history all the way to the Paleolithic era to present day, to Mesopotamia and ancient Japanese and Chinese history. You could easily spend 2-4 hours in here reading and looking at everything, also free lockers!

It is a wonderful place to learn about Korea and the world. Clean, spacious, and well laid out. Internationally accessible, with friendly staff. So glad to have visited on my trip to Seoul. Would definitely recommend.

This museum is exceptional. The depth and breath of the exhibits means that you need to spend a whole day here to cover everything. It's a worthwhile day.

Really interesting museum with a ton to see. If you want to see and read everything you'll either need the whole day or to split your visit into two visits. The third floor was my favorite (full of pottery and Buddha status). Free entry and very well done exhibits. There are also special exhibits that require the purchase of a ticket.

I had the pleasure of visiting the museum recently, and I am utterly impressed with the rich cultural heritage it showcases. The museum's vast collection of artifacts, ranging from ancient relics to contemporary art, offers a comprehensive glimpse into Korea's fascinating history.

It's free and the first floor collection from paleolithic to modern contemporary is fairly complete if not extensive. Honestly quite a great museum experience, I just wish there was more extensive literature or guided options, however it was a spur of the moment trip 2 hours before closing so I am not aware if that option was available but missed. The other two floors are more hit and miss. They have some great literature and sculpture collections but the information is sparse and the private collections are eclectic and unexplained. I don't think they do a great job of explaining the cultural significance of "The room of quiet contemplation" as it seems like a very extensive visual and auditory investment for two bronze statues of the pensive bodhivista and even with a large high quality brochure explaining the technology and history, I still feel like I don't understand anything about this. It's a bizarre art house statement in the middle of a museum and it ends as abruptly as it is introduced with no real explanation of anything. From reading press reviews from 2021, everything about this seems intentional and the presentation is of the highest quality, but I don't think enough is done to inform the ignorant about the piece. Perhaps that is intentional.

Visiting the National Museum of Korea was an absolute delight. The expansive indoor and outdoor spaces provided ample room to explore. With so much history to absorb and lush greenery to wander through, it was truly a feast for the senses. A must-visit destination for anyone eager to delve into Korea's rich cultural heritage.
