A good hostel for the price. Rooms are stuffed with bunks but, according to staff, there is no locker space available so one must keep one’s effects on one’s bed. There is bag storage, according to staff, but it’s putting your bag down in the common room with no security. Staff are work exchange volunteers, working one day a week and living onsite, which makes for an occasional lapse in communication. The constant hum of window air conditioners does not alleviate the heat in summertime. There is a slight shortage of showers, with 34 beds served apparently by only three single-stall bathrooms. The kitchen is equipped and comfortable, if a tad prone to grime, and I found the continental of coffee, tea, and toast quite pleasant.

I've travelled quite a bit and stayed in many hostels and this one is by far the worst. Upon arriving I was initially told that my reservation had been lost which is not surprising as their system seems to consist of three messy notebooks rather than a computer. I was then told that I would have to take whichever bed was free as they are first come first serve, not an issue at all but it was confusing when I asked to switch beds to a lower bunk (after a roommate had checked out) and was told (quite harshly) that I wasn't allowed. The building itself is in desperate need of a thorough cleaning and fresh a coat of paint and on top of this the employees are outwardly rude and standoffish especially the owner. They get some points for the low cost and good location but overall this is an abysmal hostel. I understand that this is meant to be a budget accommodation but no low cost is worth this, you couldn't pay me to stay there again.

Young staff is doing a great job , still hosting policy of the property owner , the service and hygiene level are all so disappointing and much below expectations. You won't regret staying away from this hostel. Not recommend!!

It's a dirty place. That's what I will remember the most, especially the kitchen where we're supposed to eat. It was not a good experience at all. It is also very noisy because of the neighborhood. You have music going on all through the night. There are one or two people among the staff who are nice, but others are not really welcoming. The breakfast is not really what you could call a breakfast so don't get excited about it (frozen bread for instance). I will never stay there again, even though it's cheap.

Don't check in LATER than 11 or they'll charge you a $20 late checkin fee. The entrance is a little door between two buildings and you'll definitely need to look for 20 mins before you find it. The rooms were stinky because of some old dudes staying there long term, they most definitely had bedbugs cuz I was itchy during my stay, the breakfast options were just bread, PB and milk. You get what you pay and the owner is not the nicest guy but he may be under a lot of pressure, running an establishment like this is not easy!

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY, READ CAREFULLY : to start off, on booking it was written "free parking", for our surprise, the free parking was on the street. I had to turn around for 30 minutes to find a spot. Then, at check-in, the booking of my 2 friends were not taken, luckly they founded some free beds, but at the end we were in different rooms.... Then the surprise, the room is terrible, the beds are old and rusty without any locker for belongings and to make it worse, 4 out of the 6 beds were taken by people that are LIVING in the "hostel". They had even a small fridge over there. It looked like "homeless" people living there. Also in my friends's room, the same terrible and unconfortable situation. Breakfast? Forget it...Toilets? Dirty. The only good thing here is the location which is near a lot of bars. The hostel should not be in booking and not be called "student". Most of the beds are being used by "permanent people"...

I really enjoyed how nice the staff was when I visited. This place is located in a fun strip of the city and one can find plenty to do here. Within the complex of the building, there are rooms to stay as it is a hostel. Cheap price that worked for me, but the spacing was just too restrictive. Plenty of bathrooms, though! And apparently free breakfast if you know when to be up for it.

Dishonest. They knew I was disabled and that's why I requested a bottom bunk. They never bothered telling me it's completely inaccessible. The only way to get to my room would be two flights of stairs, which is very painful to me.

My two star hotel was nicer than this place. Bathrooms were so gross that I didn’t shower my whole trip (gross I know, but that’s how gross the bathrooms were). Kitchen was equally as gross, I chose to eat granola bars instead of eating at the hostel. I couldn’t find the entrance either, I had to ask someone working nearby where it was. She told me it wasn’t nice but it got the job done, and I agree. Would never go there again though.

Pros: - Helpful owner (helped me parallel park, call me a day before my booking to work out parking, called me after I left to see if everything was good) - Fantastic hostel location (next to McDonalds, pizza shops, Subway, Starbucks, Seven Eleven, CVS, Bus/Metro Stations, 2 miles from major monuments) Cons: - Super small lockers - Lacks cleanliness - Owner has not updated in description that he is not providing free breakfast for over a year - Owner has also not updated in description about parking problems around the hostel

It is a place full of homeless people. Very dirty and unhygienic. Kitchen is filthy. Bathrooms are dirty. Everything is falling apart. Management is rude and ignorant. The neighborhood is very bad and unsafe and if you still want to catch disease or mugged please go ahead and stay there. You can pay same price for a room with separate bath freedom of everything. Check motel 6, check red roof they are advertising same rates with clean and secure place. I dont think any decent person will live in this place. Drugs all around, crime everywhere in this area and if you call police for help the police wont come. This is our countries DC? Seriously??

Bed sheets were clean but not much else seemed to be. Place in dire need of update. Not a student to be seen. Needs charger ports by the beds. Shady people staying there. That being said, location was amazing with great bars and restaurants right outside but to get to the national mall is a bit of an effort by metro. If you have bags use an uber.

The only reason I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 is because of the location and the price. The beds are as creaky and as unstable as possible. I was in constant fear that the top bunk was going to fall into the bottom if I moved too much. The check in times are great. Don't expect this place to look clean because it's not. No hand soap, so bring your own if you plan on using the bathroom. Are you a light sleeper? Don't stay here because, it's loud, but that's what you get when you stay in the middle of such a great location. Outlets in the room are hard to come by if you arrive later. If I could do it again, I would pay a bit more to stay in a nicer place and just Uber.

Pros -private room's bed was clean and the clothing rack, chairs and desk were clean -location proximity to metro and coffee shops -price Cons -no cleaning materials were made available to clean kitchen surfaces and microwaves (which were filthy). I think it would be easy for them to provide a diluted bleach solution and paper towels to wipe down surfaces with during the pandemic -neither did the bathroom, that I used, did not have any cleaning materials made available to sanitize surfaces -the fridge was packed to the gills so it was hard to find a place to store food -no one was wearing a mask in common areas except for myself and my partner

Cons: The rooms were dirty, there was rust everywhere, we saw at least 5 roaches... Thankfully, there were no bed bugs. People were PERMANENTLY living in there, they had the whole room set up for them with a fridge ect. The windows were broken, we couldn't open them. It was way too hot, they put tape over the cracks on the glass, we wash our own dishes with just water and someone else uses the1m right after... I'm pretty sure i heard a mouse under my bed, the bathroom was so dirty, it smelled like cigarette everywhere. Thankfully i didn't stay there for long. Pros: Cheap Still not worth it, spend a little bit more and get something confortable.

This is my go to spot when I am in DC for a night or two; why spend 200+ for a room when I can grab a bunk in one of the best neighborhoods in DC for less than I normally spend on lunch? Luxury it is not but it IS safe, clean, and fun. Steve and his staff are laid back and friendly and have always been very accommodating to me. The dorm rooms have AC, kitchen is decent sized, wifi is free, and the location is phenomenal. As a married woman in her 40s I feel completely safe staying here and always have delightful conversations with guests from all over the world. So if you prefer your buildings with a little bit of history, your neighborhoods with little bit of color and life and your wallet with a lot of savings then this is the spot in DC.

The ambiance of this hostel was simply enchanting. It's a place that transcends the typical lodging experience, genuine connections formed with staff and travelers created a true sense of community!!! The room was clean and the location is perfect to visit around! As a solo traveler, I recommend this place

LEGIT, NO SCAM!!

Closed up check-ins early for the night and left me stranded on the street Good location for bars

  • 5/5 Leave me A. 1 year ago on Google
The street is a super cool place to be with all the international restaurants and cafes. The staff was very kind as considerate. (Though there was a guy who knocked and wanted to vacuum the room at 8am when we were still staying another night). The kitchen serves breakfast, simple snack things, from 8-11am. Though the bathrooms and bunk rooms are a little dirty and outdated, a place to stay is a place to stay - and it was quite cheap for students not old enough to book a hotel yet.

Please do yourself a favor and don't choose this place to save some bucks. It might very well ruin your trip. The main guy there is just so unprofessional.

Very good hostel and at a great price! Steve who runs the hostel was very friendly and couldn’t help us enough when it came to losing some luggage. Couldn’t recommend this hostel more!

This place is endearing. Thanks for accomodating me when I was in DC before my next destination! I like the owner, Stephen - I get his style. I like the old-timey feel of the place. For hosteling, the truth is that it has the romance of a dive bar, and the nostalgia of the personalities. It's a mix of young travelers and then there seem to be some other groups of people there, so your preception will be partially what you attract. I think the review is true - that this place is straightforward.

Great customer service. Nestled in between shops. A little too cozy as far as spacing. Not bad enough to dock a star.

Mr Steve, is a very kind and funny man. He is very well versed in the history of the area, as well as the history of baseball! The area is perfect if you are looking for food and fun. The hostel has a very warm and homey environment, the staff are incredibly helpful.

I visisted this hostel as a tourist and found it decent. The best part of it, alongside its low price, is that it is very well located - various locations walkable and others easily accessible through public transport. The surrounding area is also very lively with good restaurants, various bars and similar, I wish I had had the energy and the funds to check out a few more of the bars myself but its a good location if you're after a drink or two. I stayed in a 6 bed female dorm. The bed was comfortable enough but there were various minor issues like blinds that didn't fully close so I woke up a little early each day and limited storage space (there are no cupboards or wardrobes or anything so it's under the bed or limited floor space - fine if the room isn't full or everyone has 1 neat suitcase each but if not it becomes cramped quickly). There was an air conditioner window unit which was very much needed in the warm weather and did work. The common room was small but does the job, its not a particularly social hostel so this wasn't an issue. There are four bathrooms for all guests so you do have to wait your turn occasionally but I didn't have any particularly extended waits. The shower is good in turns of temperature and water pressure but the bathroom nearest my room had fairly extensive mould on the ceiling and I saw a number of cockroaches in there on one occasion. Unfortunately that was my biggest issue, there were several cockroaches in the kitchen as well which I saw regularly - admittedly they were small ones but that clearly needs resolving. I also saw a mouse run across the kitchen at one point. This is likely because the kitchen in general was not kept very clean. There seemed to be a certain expectation of guests/residents to take care of it which is fair enough, I agree that people should be washing their dishes, but there was still clearly a level of cleaning/hygiene oversight lacking. I didn't use the kitchen for any more than the provided breakfast each day as i was only visiting for a brief while but had I actually been intending to cook while there I'm not sure I would have been happy to once I arrived. Overall I was not unhappy with my stay but I would probably pick a different place if I visit again.

I really enjoyed my stay at the student centre. First and foremost the staff were so friendly and professional Max the manager welcomed me in and showed me around the place. Logan was always happy to answer questions and give directions. Brian and Racheal were very accommodating and friendly finally nurul had a great sense of humor. The hostel it self carried A unique atmosphere with A mixture of long stay students and short term traveller's allowing people to easily make friends and have a pleasant time as far as the facilities go the kitchen is kitted with an oven and hob and the lounge area Is a good place to chill out and share stories with others. The beds are relatively comfortable and you can get a good rest overall this place punches above its weight and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay.
