茨城県坂東市岩井951(〒306-0631)である。
【祭神】は、「平将門命(タイラノマサカドノミコト)」である。かの「平将門の乱」の中心人物である。
【源平】承平天慶(ジョウヘイテンギョウ)の乱は、ただの反乱ではなく「日本の律令国家衰退」と「武士のおこり」を象徴したものであった。「東の将門、西の純友」という言葉も生まれた。
鎮圧には平将門の乱の方に平貞盛が率いる平氏の、藤原純友の乱の方に源経基が率いる源氏の力を借りたので日本の世に源平二氏が進出するきっかけにもなった。
【由緒】月日は流れ、将門の最期から三十二年が過ぎたあるとき、一人の尼僧が石井郷を訪ねてきました。それは、奥州・慧日寺に逃れていた、将門の三女「如蔵尼」でした。
奥州で隠遁生活を送っていた如蔵尼は、あるとき悪夢を得て、急いで下総に帰郷すると、村人に父の最期の地を尋ねたのです。
熾烈な残党狩りの記憶から、口を閉ざしていた村人たちでしたが、尼僧が将門の縁者だと分かると、将門が辿り着いた最期の地、現在の國王神社へと案内したのでした。
如蔵尼はこの場所で、傍らの林の中より怪木を見つけると、一刀三礼しつつ心厳かに父の霊像を刻んだといいます。
そして春、父の三十三回忌にあたる二月十四日には祠を建て、「國王大明神」の神号を奉りました。
天下泰平、国家安全を祈願して伝えたこの祠こそ、現在の國王神社であり、以来千年の永きに亘って深い信仰を集めています。
【如蔵尼】は、追ってから逃れて陸奥国磐梯の「慧日寺(エニチジ)」に庵を結び世を避けて、地蔵菩薩を深く帰依して父将門の霊をともらった。
ある日病気となり死ぬと地獄に落ちたが、地蔵菩薩に助けられて生き返った。地蔵菩薩の大慈大悲に感謝して、名前を如蔵尼と改めて地蔵を持した。
【瀧夜叉姫】は、『元亨釈書(ゲンコウシャクショ)』に記されている平将門の娘・如蔵尼をモデルに、山東京伝(サントウキョウデン)が読本『善知安方忠義伝
(ウトウヤスカタチュウギデン)』で最初に語ったものと考えられている。
父将門が戦いに敗れて討たれ一族郎党が滅ぼされた。生き残った五月姫は怨念を募らせ、貴船()キフネ明神の社に丑三つ時に参るようになった。満願の二十一夜目には貴船明神の荒御霊(アラミタマ)の声が聞こえ、五月姫は妖術を授けられ、滝夜叉姫となった。
滝夜叉姫は下総国へ戻り、相馬の城にて夜叉丸や蜘蛛丸ら手下を集め、朝廷転覆の反乱を起こそうとするが、先手を打った朝廷が滝夜叉姫成敗の勅命を大宅中将光圀(オオヤチュウジョウミツクニ、通称太郎)と山城光成(ヤマシロノミツナリ)に下していた。相馬の城の内裏に追い詰められた滝夜叉姫はドクロの化け物を呼び出し応戦するが、激闘の末に敗れる。敗れた滝夜叉姫は死して平将門のもとに昇天したとも、尼寺に入り生涯をすごしたとも言われる。
【徳一】(トクイツ)上人は、皇族でない者として最初に就任した太政大臣の藤原仲麻呂(フジワラノナカマロ)の子である。藤原仲麻呂の乱は、奈良時代(764年)に起きた叛乱。恵美押勝(エミノオシカツ)の乱ともいう。孝謙太上天皇・道鏡と対立した太師(太政大臣)藤原仲麻呂(藤原恵美押勝)が軍事力をもって政権を奪取しようとして失敗した事件である。
この乱で藤原仲麻呂が討たれるとともに一族郎党も滅ぼされた中で、彼の子の徳一上人は、命を助けられて、常陸国や奥州で仏教布教や寺院建立に精力を傾けた。
常陸国では、「筑波山知足院中禅寺」や関東の清水寺と言われる「西光院」を、奥州では「慧日寺(エニチジ)」や「勝常寺(ショウジョウジ)」をそれぞれ創建した。
慧日寺の最盛期には寺領18万石、寺僧300、僧兵数千、子院は3800もあったといわれ、会津はもとより、東北一円に影響を与えたほどでした。以上の勢力を有し、かつ、創建者が反乱者の汚名を着せられたものであることから、地縁があるから、庵を営むことが可能であったのではないかと推測する。
【社殿】が、拝殿から幣殿、そして本殿と屋根が茅葺きとなっていて、独特の建築景観を呈している。権現造の変型とみられるそうだ。
【桓武平氏】平将門は、五十代桓武天皇の曾孫に当たる「高望王(タカモチオウ)」が平姓を賜って臣下となって、関東の地に定着し、桓武天皇→葛原親王→高見王→高望王→平国香→平良将→平将門との系統を桓武平氏として繋いだ。
この系統からは、平清盛の伊勢平氏や北条時政の北条氏が生じている。また、傍系として、五十四代仁明天皇の仁明平氏、五十五代文徳天皇の文徳平氏、五十八代光孝天皇の光孝平氏が派生している。
【社名】の國王とは、何か?。確か挙兵に当たり「大宝神社」(茨城県下妻市)に参拝し、巫女から新皇を名乗るように告げられたからであろうか!。
しかし、新皇からは天上天下のすべてを束ねる地位を連想するが、國王の國は天下の旧令制国(下総国など)の一つの首領を想像する。天皇に遠慮した結果であると思うが、この名称に決めたし決められたなと感心してしまう!。
【接道】は、境内地の東側を南北に走る「県道結城坂東線」又は北側を東西に走る国道354号線の「岩井水海道バイパス」が最適である。
これらの両線の交差点が「弓田橋南」である。
【駐車場】は、境内地南端の鳥居前に2台分のスペースがある。
また、社殿の東側に「上岩井公民館」が立ち、この建物の前に相当数の駐車スペースがある(当日も借用している地元民が居た)。
【トイレ】は、個人的には使用しなかったが、上記の公民館と社殿の間にトイレ案内板があり、公民館寄りにあるかもしれない。
