What a cool museum! 3 different buildings to check out and explore. There are tons of videos, photos, & facts. All the equipment and boats make you feel like you were truly there!!

Beautiful little gem of a museum that unexpectedly captures! Split across 3 buildings previously in use as a herrings factory, this museum sparks interest in the old days of the herrings fishing boom from various angles around life (of the fishermen and herrings girls), technology (used to process the fish oil) and the boom years of this picturesque little town. Highly recommended!

An ok museum. Larger than the average Icelandic museum. Lots of artifacts from the era and lots of informational plaques.

The Herring-Era Maritime Museum is split into three components. The third component is the maritime portion itself. Within, you will find fishing vessels large and small. It is possible to board and partially explore the largest of the vessels. This portion of the tour was self guided but the curator in the Róaldsbrakki had explained what we would be seeing. I suspect children would find this component the most interesting as they could get onto the boats.

I found this fascinating. Women creating a workforce and earning their own income. The herring girls were some tough chicks!

Cool, informative place to visit to learn more about history of herring fishing and processing. You can visit place where workers used to live and the former factory floor where herring was processed.

So interesting! This museum tells the tale of the Herring boom in Siglufjordur, and the inevitable bust. but through it all the folks of Iceland's northern most village persevered & Siglufjordur lives & thrives today. If you're a history nerd like myself, check this museum out...all three buildings...talk to the staff, they are very kind, helpful & informative.

👍👍 Get off the Ring Road and take a beautiful drive on 82 to 76 through Siglufjörður and a nearly 1km long 1 lane tunnel at Strákagöng. The vistas and views are stunning.
