Panhala fort (also known as Panhalgad, Pahalla and Panalla (literally "the home of serpents")), is located in Panhala, 20 kilometres northwest of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India. It is strategically located looking over a pass in the Sahyadri mountain range which was a major trade route from Bijapur in the interior of Maharashtra to the coastal areas.Due to its strategic location, it was the centre of several skirmishes in the Deccan involving the Marathas, the Mughals and the British East India Company, the most notable being the Battle of Pavan Khind. Here, the queen regent of Kolhapur State, Tarabai, spent her formative years. Several parts of the fort and the structures within are still intact.

This is one of the most place to visit in Panhala. It has best view of the surrounding area and the place is quite breezy.

Small maintained Sajja though few parts are closed inside. You can get glimpse of small villages around Panhala fort from here. It is treat for eyes to see those green farms yeilding various crops. Standing there one can experience how kings would have surveyed the empires from top.

Few of the well maintained structure on Panhala gad area. But very less information is mentioned outside the structure regarding the history and it's importance. There are other couple of locked buildings near the main sajja kothi, again no mention of its relevance. Main purpose of not placing in information boards in whole Panhala fort area, seems to promote guides.

Sajja kothi is the place where Sambhaji Raja was kept during his "saja" by Shivaji Maharaj. Correct me if I am wrong. Here is more information from trawel.co.in The Sajja Kothi is a beautiful historic building in Kolhapur. Its situated just 23. 4 kms away from Kolhapur. The Sajja Kothi is a beautiful building of huge historic significance. The architecture is very interesting with intricate carvings and domes. The structure is situated on a hill which makes it more aesthetically pleasing. It overlooks the Waranna valley which is a beautiful view with the rolling hills and the greenery. It is believed to be built in 1008 AD. The Sajja Kothi is associated with the great Maratha ruler, Shivaji. It is said that Shivaji planned many battles while he stayed here. The son of Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji was imprisoned here because he threatened to join with Aurangazeb. The place is actually a part of the Panhala fort. The place offers a great view of the valley and is a beautiful piece of architecture. The building is three storied and was built by the Muhammedans. It was actually built with an idea of being a punishment cell. The building is a perfect specimen of the Mughal architecture. The legend says that the Maharaj Shivaji escaped this building when the Bijapur general attacked Panhala, And instead a brave soldier named Shiva Kashid disguised as Shivaji and fought the general Siddi Johar. The Sajja Kothi is a beautiful piece of architecture just waiting to tell you its history. The place is adorned with beautiful carvings, domes and balconies. Being so old, its amazing how strong the structure is still. The place is suited for history buffs. It is perfect for spending a day immersed in history with your friends and family. The sajja kothi is open to visitors all year round. The ideal time to visit the place is from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The best time to visit will be in the winter as the climate will be extremely pleasurable.

Sajja kothi is a two-storied granite structure having one room along with a balcony in each floor facing the valley. It is a part of the iconic Panhala Fort, probably used for resting and spending leisure time by the maratha kings and their families. The structure have a beautiful jharokha in the front portion of it. The balconies and jharokhas somehow resembles the Bijapur style of architecture. It is a beautiful structure but not well-maintained. However some travellers like us enjoys the dark and cold ambiance of these mediaeval forts that creates a sanse of mistery and adventure. We visited the place early morning, sitting there in the balcony of Sajja Kothi, the calmness of the valley, the rising sun and the cool breeze soothed our mind and made our day. Although we couldn't access some part of the Kothi as it was the part was not maintained properly thus was abandoned. So my suggestion to you is that you should visit Sajja Kothi once if you come to Panhala.

Historical landmark situated in Panhala fort. One of the important historical place from Panhala fort. It is built for meeting purposes. This fort is very important in Maratha history because Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj spend more the 500 days in this fort.

A place to enjoy with friends and families. It has 7 historical places that are related to the the escape of the great Shivaji from his enemies who had overpowered him. Really nice place as it has forts and markets that will make them exploring more fun with your friends and families. I recommend you going to that place atleast once 😃😄 And there is also a park that was started around in the 90s, don't miss this park while you go that place 😃😉and thanks !!

Sajja Kothi or Viewing deck of Fort Panhalgadh is strategically located to overlook movements on important passes of Sahyadri. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj stayed safe on this fort and successfully dodged enemy troops who outnumbered 1:50. It was this very place when Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj learned about the demise of his father. Fort also reminds supreme sacrifice of Bajiprabhu Deshpande, Shiva Kashid and 300 baandars who laid down their lives to protect their beloved king & Swaraj.

Good place with historical value...For us maharashtrians anything related to Shivaji Maharaj is of immense pride and value. Here, Sambhaji son of Shivaji Maharaj was kept in prison by the Mughals and that's the name of the prison " Sazza ki kothi" which later became Sajja kothi due to the local language Marathi.... Lots of good eateries and small tea talls too. Good views all over Panhala. Now it's become a vacation destination and day outing place with lot of games, rides for kids and food places ( Bhajji , tea) being among the prime and common snacks. Go enjoy

Beautiful view... You can spend and entire evening enjoying beautiful visuals and weather and relaxing and rejuvenating yourself.... Sunrise 🌄 can also be enjoyed here... But nothing is available to eat or drink nearby. One/two closed stalls were there but not operating. It will be more happening if something to eat or drink is available.

This place is an amazing architecture and a pretty good place if you want to hug the clouds after pusati buruj(in panhala). As you go walking by the edge of the fort for a couple minutes, you'll find a short plateu(a bigger rock I would say), to sit and enjoy on. You can also enjoy the roasted sweet corn, maggi, tea as you chill.

The monument is double storey. You can see a great view from the gallery of this building. It is worth visiting. According to a local guide this place is where Sambhaji Maharaj was kept in house arrest. It is also the place where Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj met Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for the last time. This building also used to be a place where all the secret meetings Shivaji Maharaj held on panhala.

Having some historical significance. But there is not much tourist attraction. Sims more like an abandoned building. It may well have been a prison house for law breakers. There is no ticket to enter know the reason. Also it's not sign posted so pretty much you are on your own to figure out where it goes and what it's all about

The second best place in Panhala, after Teen Darwaja, Spend some time here. Look around the place as well as take in the superb view from the top. See attached pics, words don't do justice to a place like this.

  • 4/5 ROHAN K. 4 years ago on Google
Historical place. It is like gallery on hilltop with a view of deep valley down. It is two storayed structure. Having a small hal in down and a viewer gallery on top. There's ample empty space. Having few old structutes and old compound wall of fort. There's also a flag which is hosted by tahsildar on special occasions.

🫤 Great historical place in shambles because of shameless worthless tourism ministers of the state, centre of the past and present. The two stars are for the kolhapur municipal corporations, mayors, authorities of the past and present. THE HISTORICAL PANHALA FORT IS FIVE STARS. DO SOMETHING TO RESTORE...

👍👍 This was another entrance to the fort. It was designed to elude invaders such that they would get trapped into a small courtyard and could then be easily neutralized. It has an elaborate Ganesh motif at the entrance.
