Delighted and very proud of our heritage and the magnificent work done by Cholas and other rulers of India . Their contribution to the culture and art can’t be explained in words. This temple is a classic example of the architecture marvel . Need min 3-4 hrs to enjoy this temple beauty. Each puller and each carvings tell you a story . Couldn’t believe that in stone you can go to this much deep and exhibit nature . A must visit for tourist visiting south .

The Airavatesvara Temple in Dharasuram, Tamil Nadu, is a testament to the architectural brilliance of the Chola dynasty and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here's a concise review: 1. **Architectural Grandeur**: The temple showcases exquisite Dravidian architecture with intricate carvings, detailed sculptures, and impressive vimanas (towering structures). The mandapams (halls) and intricate stone pillars reflect the artistic mastery of the Chola artisans. 2. **Historical Importance**: Built in the 12th century by Rajaraja Chola II, the temple stands as a significant representation of the Chola era's religious and cultural prominence. 3. **Spiritual Significance**: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple reverberates with spirituality. Devotees believe that worshipping here can bestow blessings and spiritual enlightenment. 4. **Musical Pillars**: One of the temple's unique features is its musical pillars. When tapped, these pillars produce different musical notes, showcasing the ancient Indians' deep understanding of acoustics and architecture. 5. **Location and Ambiance**: Nestled amidst serene surroundings, the temple offers visitors a tranquil environment. The well-maintained temple complex and its serene pond add to its charm. In summary, the Dharasuram Temple is not only a marvel of ancient architecture but also a sacred space that resonates with spiritual energy. Its historical significance, coupled with its architectural splendor, makes it a must-visit for both history enthusiasts and spiritual seekers.

Though the temple's architecture is quite amazing, the maintenance is not upto the mark. But bringing on upon the aesthetics of the place and the ambience, the temple is quite amazing. It's just one main deity around which the temple is built and the carvings are just amazing. It displays the Exclusiveness with which the he temple was built. The human sized statues are detailed to the last bit, even the nails look so real. And then moving onto the miniatures, it's so detailed. The visit to the temple was one great experience. A must visit for all.

A wonderful temple to visit. This is one of the few temples that is best visited during the afternoons. There will be very little crowd and unlike other temples, even if it's too hot, you won't have to worry. The temple is well shaded and you can always repose to a place where cool air is passing. It is not as famous as other temples of Tamil Nadu but has its own charm.

The Airavatheswara Temple at Darasuram is also dedicated to Lord Shiva and built under Raja Raja Chola II in 1150 A.D. Out of the three, Airavatesvara temple at Darasuram stands out for its intricate, breathtakingly beautiful sculptures. The temple in the form of a chariot being pulled by an elephant and horse with a fleet of steps is no doubt a repository of our art and culture. It is one of the finest monuments in terms of scientific advance, art, architecture and sculptures during the Chola Period. This is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Great Living Chola Temples”. The list includes: - The Brihadeeshwara Temple at Tanjore (1010 A.D., Raja Raja Chola I) - The Brihadeeshwara Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram (1035 A.D., Rajendra Chola I) - The Airavatesvara Temple, at Darasuram Raja Raja II (1150 A.D., Raja Raja Chola II) One must visit these three Incredibly beautiful temples to appreciate the rich heritage of Bharat and in particular the contribution of Chola Dynasty to the civilization.

Such a wonderful temple. We visited in the evening time when it was raining, there was no electricity, our only source of light is the lightning and our mobile torch. We had spent an hour there and It was such a unique experience seeing the temple via lightning, one, which I cannot describe through words. We visited the temple again next day to see it properly and take pics but that previous day's experience was something else

Wonderful place to spend quality time with family. So much space for relaxing and playing outside the temple. Inside the temple, such a lovely artful place with divinity. Outside temple needs to be looked for some cheap couples doing mischief things. When we are with children, it is so much uncomfortable. I believe police or government officials take some action on this.

Beautiful temple. But many structures have started to disintegrate. No proper maintenence. No signage or information about history of the temple. Local people are using it like park going for waking. Around the temple, it's very dirty on the lawn. Large parking space for car is available inside.

Beautiful temple. Architecture is superb. Well maintained. However the officials posted here by the Government were not good. There was a small museum in the temple. When we wanted to have a look at it they were in a hurry to go out and said nothing is special to be seen. At 10.30 AM in the morning during the official time they would have allowed us the watch the museum. Two of them locked the door and went off.

We had traveled to Tanjavur, and a guide there recommended that we visit this temple. It's a bit off route but the drive from our hotel was very relaxing due to the greenery next to the roads. The temple is a beautiful example of medieval architecture, and a delight for shutterbugs. The engravings on the stones are intricate and well preserved. There are several deities in the complex and prayers are offered daily. The garden outside the temple walls is also beautiful with many large trees offering ample shade. Overall, a must visit place if you are visiting Tanjavur or nearby areas.

Obviously is a 5 star review as its a temple. The environment is so nice along with the carved details that were infact very detailed that some had some elephants carved in them🐘🛕! Nearby this temple there are several spaces where you can sit, eat and play. There were also nearby stalls with scrumptious food to eat when hungry! This place is definetely to visit if you want to take photos or generally like photography 📷🎥 To conclude, this is an antique yet intriguing piece of history that has a lot of meaning. Afterall, A painting speaks more than a thousand words no?

During my recent visit to this temple, I was truly amazed by its architectural splendor. The chariot-like carvings stood out with exceptional craftsmanship, leaving a lasting impression. The beautiful lush green meadow outside enhances the overall peaceful ambiance.

Such a picture perfect beauty. Either must be visited early in the morning or afternoon since there is no much shade to walk around. Every carving has a story behind. Unfortunately most of them are ruined. Heard it's been more than 820+ years since it's build. It's actually surprising that most of them are still intact.. Must visit if you love history or if you loved Thanjavur big temple..

This temple is the holy abode of Lord Shiva, built by none other than the finest architects of the Southern part of India: the Cholas. Together with Thillai Nataraja Temple at Chidambaram & Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram, this temple makes for a very holy and interesting part to visit. Of course, you require Shiva's permission to make your way to have a darshan in all these holiest of the holy temples. Great were the Cholas who left such a vast unmatched legacy for posterity! On Namah Shivay!

One should definitely visit this UNESCO world heritage site if they have an interest in ancient architecture and sculptures. There is also a lot of open space around the temple. There is only 1 entrance for the cars towards the western side, so please don’t search for other entrances. This is also known as the airavateeshwara temple.

Step into history and admire the vision of the craftsmen of the chola era. Built with interlocking stones, the temple is a revelation of sculptures and miniatures. It is advisable to hire a guide if u are keen to know/see the place in detail. Our guide ms. Abhirami was so well spoken, had patience to click our pics and even suggested great place to eat. You will find her delightful and pleasing. Have posted a photo featuring her so that u can recognise her easily. Her charges are affordable.. and if you like, u can pay more like we did :) The Shiva lingam invokes peace within you. Visit this in morning, so that you don't jump like popcorn on the hot stones! :) The parking has good washroom and immense green lawns and trees for a stopover/picnic. I truly loved my visit. 💞💞

Airavatesvara Temple is a Hindu temple of Dravidian architecture located in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur District in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. This temple, built by Chola emperor Rajaraja II in the 12th century CE is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur, the Gangaikondacholisvaram Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram that are referred to as the Great Living Chola Temples.

This is the best place for temple lovers! Temple in Thanjavur, and about 30 kilometres to the southwest of Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple. All are a part of the UNESCO world heritage site. Truly the Airavatesvara temple is up there in the list of architectural marvels produced by great Engineers !! 12th century Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, dedicated to Bhagwan Shiva, built by the Chola king Rajaraja_II from Tamilnadu

Amazingly preserved UNESCO world heritage site in kumbakonam. Intricate carvings. Monumental architecture. Many ancient inscriptions from the Chola period. Only critique is that it’s not clearly marked where the no shoes area is vs where shoes are allowed. Beggars outside the temple but not any inside! One of my favorite temples to visit and admire the architecture. A must see in Kumbakonam! Has not been ruined by “renovation” or money grab “temple tourism” like many of the other local temples. Best to visit on a weekday to avoid religious crowds.

It is an art gallery of ancient Tamil people. One of the greatest temples in tamilnadu. Very fine art in that temple. One is not enough to see the wonder of this temple. Very interesting art works with wonder for 1000 years back. One of the most memorable moments in my life.

(Visited in September 2023) Om Namah Shivaya! Airavatesvarar Temple of Darasuram, dedicated to Lord Shiva, attributed to imperial cholas in 12th century CE is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a part of Great Living Chola Temples. It is an impressive architectural temple of sculptural excellence. The Rajagambhira Mukhamandapam, World's oldest optical illusion in stone, sculptures etc offer a spiritual insight into the artistic exploits of the past. Thoroughly loved the place. It is located very near to the city of Kumbhakonam and busses, autos ply regularly. If you are planning to visit it on a Sunday, please do understand that the temple opens at 7:00 AM and plan accordingly. ❤️👏🙏

Kasi Viswanathar Temple complex covers two acres and is located close to the Mahamaham tank in Kumbakonam, Tamilnadu. This temple is referred in Ramayana - when Lord Rama and Lakshmana are said to have worshipped Shiva here during their search for Sita, and acquired Rudramsam, to enable them to fight Ravana under the advice of sage Agasthya.. Legend has it that the nine sacred rivers of India, (Ganges, Yamuna, Narmada, Saraswati, Cauvery, Godavari, Krishna, Tungabhadra and Sarayu.) prayed to Shiva at Banares (Viswanathar) to be absolved of the sins washed away by bathers, and were directed to bathe in the Mahamagam tank and worship Adi Kumbeswarar Temple. Viswanathar of Kaasi is believed to have manifested himself here at Kumbhakonam at Kudandaikkaronam. This temple is one of the 12 Shiva temples connected with Mahamaham festival which happens once in 12 years in Kumbakonam. They are : Kasi Viswanathar Temple, Kumbeswarar Temple,Someswarar Temple, Nageswara Temple, Kalahasteeswarar Temple, Gowthameswarar Temple,,Kottaiyur Kodeeswarar temple, Amirthakalasanathar Temple, Banapuriswarar Temple, Abimukeswarar Temple, Kambatta Visvanathar Temple and Ekambareswarar Temple.. Must have darshan

One of the 3 chola temples, this speaks volumes about thr intricate architecture from those days (guessing the timeline was the 12th century). As with the usual design, there's a gopuram on the outside gate and an inside complex which seats the sanctum Santorum. Again, couldn't manage to get in because of covid protocols. But from the outside it is a beautiful place. Another interesting experience is a slum besides the temple which has weaver families. They invite you to their houses as you see their trade in action. You can also buy a few sarees if you want to. We did.

This temple is a storehouse of art and architecture and has some exquisite stone carvings. Although this temple is much smaller than the Brihadeesvara Temple or the Gangaikondacholapuram Temple, it is more exquisite in detail. The elevation and proportions of all the units is elegant with sculptures dominating the architecture.
