It is Asia's 3rd largest tank. Also known as the Sivasagar lake is a large tank in Sivasagar dug by the Ahoms in the 18th century. The tank is built on an area of 130 acres. The water level of the tank never changes which highlights the advanced hydrology of the Ahom period. According to historian Mills, the tank was built in one night.

Sivasagar Tank, also known asĀ BorpukhuriĀ is a largeĀ tankĀ inĀ SivasagarĀ dug by theĀ AhomsĀ in the 18th century. It is located in the heart of Sivasagar,Ā Assam,Ā India. The tank is located near theĀ Sivasagar Sivadol, a major landmark of the town. The tank is built on an area of 130 acres (52.6 hectares) and is 64 feet (19.5 metres) deep. This large tank was built by Queen Ambika , consort of Shiva Singha, in the year 1734. The water level of the tank never changes which highlights the advanced hydrology of the Ahom period. According to historian Mills, the tank was built in one night. The tank is an architectural masterpiece made hundred of years ago. One cannot visually understand that it was made in the absence of any technological support. Sivasagar Tank is an important habitat for migratory birds during winter season and it is also a home of many flowering plants. This makes the tank an attractive landscape in the town.

The Sivsagar tank was built byĀ Bar Raja Ambika, the chief consort ofĀ Siva SinghaĀ in 1733. A battle was fought against theĀ Moamoria rebelsĀ In its vicinity in the reign ofĀ Gaurinath Singha. The Sivasagar tank, also known as the Borpukhuri tank, was built by constructing embankments and the water level thus created in the lake remains above the adjoining ground level. The lake has a total area of 257-acre (104Ā ha) with a water spread of 129-acre (52Ā ha). It is said that the lake water remains stable throughout the year without any fluctuations even during the monsoon months. The depth of water in the lake is 27 feet (8.2Ā m). Many notable structures have been built on the banks of the lake. Three Hindu temples Sivadol, Visnudol and Devidol, a Buddhist shrine and a bird watching tower to watch wintering birds visiting the area, are located on its east bank. The Tai Museum located on the west bank of the tank is built with red bricks. A church and two mosques are also located on the bank of the tank.
