One of the largest dam in southern Odisha. Machkund Hydroelectric Project benifits a large number of people. Also a tourist destination

The project is located on the western slopes of the Eastern Ghats near the well-known Duduma falls (Duduma Falls is famous tourist site) on Machkund River. The Hydro Power Plant has a design capacity of 120 MW. It has 6 unit(s) under operation (3 x 23 MW + 3 x 17 MW). The project was established in 1945 as a joint venture project between Orissa and Andhra Pradesh. At that time sum of Rs 18 crore was invested in the project. Among the total expenditure Orissa had invested about Rs 6 crore, Andhra Pradesh invested around Rs 12 crore. The first unit was commissioned in 1955 and the last unit was installed in 1959. The hydroelectric project utilises machkund river water of electricity generation. The dam cam be visited from inside to see the turbines running with the help of an engineer. It has a rail boggie for uphill transfer of staff. This is a very thrilling experience for all students and learners.

There is no facility to visit the powerhouse from inside whereas there is a small area in front of it near the river. You can but visit the place from which pipes are directed from up towards the powerhouse.

This is a pre independence hydroelectric project located in the state of Odisha (close to Andhra Pradesh border). As per agreement, the power generated from this project is shared in between Odisha and AP state. Must place to visit but need to drive/ride cautiously in ghat area. This project is also famous for winch house (pulley to carry employees from top of hill to power house).
