✨The High Court complex is located in the southern end of George town. The building was constructed after relocating temples on the land. The building now used exclusively by the High Court was built to also house the Courts of Small Causes and the City Civil Court. ✨Architecture- 🏛️- The High Court building is an example of Indo- Saracenic architecture. You will find tall minarets. This building is the greatest Heritage for the people in Chennai. Its tree-lined squares and red-brick buildings have witnessed many important moments in Indian legal history. ✨History - Construction began in October 1888 and was completed in 1892 following the design prepared by J. W. Brassington and later under the guidance of architect Henry Irwin, who completed it with the assistance of J. H. Stephens.

The Madras High Court is the high court of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The court is one of the three High Courts in India established in the three Presidency Towns of Bombay, Calcutta and Madras by letters patent granted by Queen Victoria, bearing date 26 June 1862. It exercises original jurisdiction over the city of Chennai and appellate jurisdiction over the entire state of Tamil Nadu and Union territory of Puducherry, as well as extraordinary original jurisdiction, civil and criminal, under the letters patent and special original jurisdiction for the issue of writs under the Constitution of India. It consists of 74 judges and a chief justice who are in charge of the general policy adopted in the administration of justice. In September 2016, the centre government forwarded names of 15 new judges to the President for his signature on their warrants of appointment. Of the 15, nine are from among lawyers and six from the subordinate judiciary.Justice V.K. Tahil ramani of the Bombay High Court has been appointed as Chief Justice of Madras High Court, though she is yet to assume office, after Justice Indira Banerjee was elevated to the Supreme Court of India. From 1817 to 1862, the Supreme Court of Madras, the precursor to the present Madras High Court, was situated in a building opposite the Chennai Beach railway station. From 1862 to 1892, the High Court was also housed in that building. The present buildings were officially inaugurated on 12 July 1892, when the then Madras Governor, Beilby, Baron Wenlock, handed over the key to the then Chief Justice Sir Arthur Collins. British India's three presidency towns of Madras (Chennai), Bombay (Mumbai), and Calcutta (Kolkata) were each granted a High Court by letters patent dated 26 June 1862.The letters patent were issued by Queen Victoria under the authority of the British parliament's Indian High Courts Act 1861. The three courts remain unique in modern India, having been established under British royal charter; this is in contrast with the country's other high courts, which have been directly established under the Indian Constitution. However, the Constitution of India recognises the status of the older courts. The Madras High Court was formed by merging the Supreme Court of Judicature at Madras, and the Sudder Dewanny Adawlut. The Court was required to decide cases in accordance with justice, equity and good conscience. The earliest judges of the High Court included Judges Holloway, Innes and Morgan. The first Indian to sit as a judge of the High Court was Justice T. Muthuswamy Iyer. Other early Indian judges included Justices V. Krishnaswamy Iyer and P. R. Sundaram Iyer. The Madras High Court was a pioneer in Original Side jurisdiction reform in favour of Indian practitioners as early as the 1870s. The Madras High Court's history means that the decisions of the British Judicial Committee of the Privy Council are still binding on it, provided that the ratio of a case has not been over-ruled by the Supreme Court of India. Although the name of the city was changed from Madras to Chennai in 1996, the Court as an institution did not follow suit, and retained the name as the Madras High Court. However, a Bill to rename the Madras High Court as the Chennai High Court was approved by the cabinet on 5 July 2016, along with the change of name of the Calcutta High Court and Bombay High Court as Kolkata High Courtand Mumbai High Court respectively. The Bill called High Courts (Alternation of Names) Bill has been introduced in the Lok Sabha on 19 July 2016.The Bill is yet to be passed by both Houses of Parliament. However, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has passed a unanimous resolution appealing to the Central Government to rename the court as High Court of Tamil Nadu since the Court serves the whole state.

One of the oldest High Courts in India, this High Court is along with other Presidency Courts in British India, is more than 150 years old. The red colour is prominent in its architecture, reminding us of other similar structure, like High Court of Karnataka in Bangalore or that of Uttarpradesh in Allahabad. There are many judicial and quasi judicial bodies exits in its compound, like Mediation Centre, Arbitration Centre, Legal Aid Authority, Family Courts to name a few other than the High Courts. The roads leading to High Court are perpetually in a state of traffic jam. The area inside has been well kept, neat and tidy.

I recently had the privilege of visiting the Madras High Court, and I must say that it left an indelible impression on me. As an institution of justice and a testament to architectural grandeur, the Madras High Court embodies the ideals of fairness, integrity, and legal excellence. Allow me to share why I believe the Madras High Court deserves the highest praise. First and foremost, the Madras High Court stands as an iconic symbol of justice in the city of Chennai. Its majestic architecture, blending both Gothic and Indo-Saracenic styles, is a sight to behold. The imposing facade, intricate carvings, and grandiose domes create an aura of respect and reverence for the legal system. The dedication and professionalism of the judges and legal professionals are evident in their diligence, impartiality, and expertise. The High Court serves as a beacon of hope and fairness, ensuring that the principles of law are upheld and justice is served. The High Court's library is a treasure trove of legal knowledge. Its extensive collection of books, journals, and legal resources serves as a valuable research hub for legal professionals and scholars. The library's well-organized catalog and accessibility make it an invaluable asset for anyone seeking legal information and guidance. It exemplifies the High Court's commitment to fostering a culture of continuous learning and intellectual growth. One of the standout features of the Madras High Court is its commitment to public access and awareness. The court regularly organizes public lectures, seminars, and workshops to promote legal literacy and empower citizens with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities. This commitment to education and outreach strengthens the bond between the legal system and the public, fostering a sense of trust and understanding. Beyond its legal significance, the Madras High Court is a marvel of architectural brilliance. Its blend of Gothic and Indo-Saracenic styles creates a unique visual experience that transports visitors to a bygone era. The intricate detailing, spacious corridors, and well-maintained premises further enhance the overall ambiance. It's a testament to the city's rich architectural heritage and adds to the overall allure of the High Court. Lastly, the Madras High Court's contribution to the social fabric of Chennai and Tamil Nadu is noteworthy. Through its judgments and legal precedents, the High Court plays a crucial role in shaping and safeguarding the rights and interests of the people. It stands as a pillar of strength, ensuring that the rule of law prevails and justice is accessible to all. In conclusion, the Madras High Court is an institution of justice and a symbol of architectural grandeur. Its commitment to fairness, legal excellence, and public access sets it apart. Whether you are a legal professional, a law student, or simply a visitor interested in history and architecture, a visit to the Madras High Court is an enlightening and enriching experience.
