Known as father of Carnatic music, Purandara Dasa (c. 1484 – c. 1565) was a saint / philosopher and a follower of Madhwacharya's Dwaitha philosophy. He was a composer, singer and one of the chief founding-proponents of Carnatic music, who introduced the raga  Mayamalavagowla as the basic scale for music instruction. The mantapa is located by the Tungabhadra river and during the monsoon season gets partly submerged.

It is believed to be a gift from the King of Vijayanagar dynasty to the great devotee Purandaradasa. The Manatapa is known for being the one with the lowest ceiling. It is of the height of an average Indian man and most of the travellers will have to watch their head while walking inside the Mantapa. It lets you sit by the river on a firm platform.

Purandara Dasa, often hailed as the "Father of Carnatic Music," was a 16th-century saint who composed devotional songs in praise of Lord Krishna. His legacy is celebrated not only for its musical contributions but also for the spiritual teachings embedded in his compositions. The Purandara Dasara Mantapa stands as a tribute to this luminary, offering a serene space for reflection and devotion. The Mantapa, located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, boasts an architectural style typical of the Vijayanagara Empire. Its pillared hall, intricately carved with scenes from Hindu mythology and the life of Purandara Dasa, showcases the artistic finesse of the Vijayanagara craftsmen. The Mantapa's serene surroundings and the river's gentle flow create an atmosphere conducive to prayer and meditation. The Purandara Dasara Mantapa serves as a cultural hub, hosting music festivals and events dedicated to Carnatic music. Devotees and music enthusiasts alike gather to pay homage to Purandara Dasa through classical music performances, recitals, and bhajan sessions. The acoustics of the Mantapa contribute to the immersive experience, allowing the soul-stirring notes of devotional music to reverberate within its sacred walls. Devotees consider the Mantapa a sacred pilgrimage site, believing that it holds the vibrations of Purandara Dasa's devotion. Many undertake a journey to this spiritual haven to seek solace, inspiration, and a connection with the divine through the saint's musical compositions. Preserving the cultural and historical heritage of the Purandara Dasara Mantapa is a collective effort. Conservation initiatives aim to maintain the structural integrity of the Mantapa while safeguarding the precious carvings that narrate the story of Purandara Dasa's life and teachings. The Purandara Dasara Mantapa stands as a testament to the seamless integration of spirituality and artistic expression. The carvings not only depict the life of the saint but also serve as a visual representation of the profound themes found in his devotional compositions. Visiting the Purandara Dasara Mantapa in Hampi is more than a cultural excursion; it is a spiritual odyssey that allows one to immerse in the melodies of devotion and bask in the legacy of a saint whose impact transcends time. As the gentle breeze carries the echoes of classical music and the sacred river flows beside, the Mantapa becomes a living testament to the enduring power of art and spirituality in the heart of Hampi's historical tapestry. Recently G20 has been selected as the official venue partner for hosting the G20 members for the highly anticipated Third G20 Culture Working Group (CWG) and the Third G20 Sherpa meetings.

Purandaradasa Mantap is situated right on the banks of river Tungabhadra and on the rear side of the famous Vijay Vitthal temple. Visitors and tourists, visit this place after completing Vijay Vitthal temple visit. When you move towards Purandaradas Mantap from Vijay Vitthal temple, in the way you will see stone shaped arch, known as Tula bharam. In the ancient days, this place had a weighing balance and hence the name Tula Bharam. When you proceed further from this place for about 300 meters, you will reach Purandaradasa mantap. This place is a scenic beauty. One side you will have majestic river gliding past the mantap. On the other banks of the river, you will see some greenery and coconut trees. In the far site on to the right side of the mantap, you will see a hill with white snake shaped marking right from tip to bottom of the hill. This is called Malyavantaparvatam (Malyavanta Hill), reference of this hill could be found in the epic Ramayana. People visiting Hampi generally schedule their trip such that they could reach this place during lunch hours. Many visitors would have their lunch in this mantap and spend some quality time playing in the river water. This place get inundated during rainy season when the river Tungabhadra swells in size and flows over the mantap.

A connectivity between the east hampi (Maximum temples) and the west hampi (Hippie Island) which is been divided by the Tungabadra river. there is a boat ride that takes 50 bucks for the ferry. we saw people chilling out here catching fish and going from point A to B. Soothing place to relax and also you will find a market to shop for your loved ones.

We saw the mantapa from a distance and didn't have the strength to walk down to the actual structure. More than the structure itself, I appreciated the biography of Purandara Dasa that our guide narrated. More than the structures, it is the legends that really fascinate me about the different monuments we visited at Hampi.

This 15th century Mantapa is the holy site of famous poet/saint Purandara Dasa who was an esteemed member of the Royal court of Raja Krishnadev Raya of Vijayanagara Empire. It is said that about half of the Carnatic verses/couplets today were direct or indirect contributions from him. He compiled them while sitting on this Mantapa along river Tungabhadra. The views are so scenic and on the other side of the river , one can also see Anjanadri Hills at a distance. Please don't venture much inside water as there is a crocodile warning as well. You can enjoy from a distance and return with pleasant memories .

Mantapa is actually in the river bed, similar to Krishnadevaraya's tomb at Anegundi. The mantapa is a simple looking structure, built of heavy granite blocks. It seems the mantapa is situated on a rockbed, no foundation required and also the reason for it surviving so many years. The platform next to the mantapa is a recent addition, every year a 2 or 3 day Carnatic music festival is held in memory of Sri Purandara Dasa. Its nice to see this historically important structure maintained nicely.

Fantastic view with good food at this place. Going into water is restricted here. Security here are very friendly and even help us with letting us know the history of this place. This is a must visit for people who go to Chariot temple.

Very good old temple dedicated to Purandara Dasaru, placed river side. One of the best place in Hampi to relax while you see the flowing river. You can reach this place either from virupaksha temple or from vithal temple.

Purandara dasara mandapa is situated on the bank of river Tungabhadra in Hampi. This is closed to the famous Vijaya Vittala temple. When the water level increases in the river, the mandapa will be submerged in water.
