Nestled between the Teesta and Mahananda rivers on the foothills of the Himalayas in the Darjeeling district, it is a reserved forest area spread across 158 sq km radius. The main entrance to the sanctuary is from Sukna which is about 30 minutes from Siliguri. Regular Safaris are offered in one’s own vehicle and it takes 2.5 hours to complete the entire circuit. There are 330 different types of plants, while the forest is said to have 150 odd elephants. The views from here are spectacular with grassy meadows on one side, the flowing Mahananda river on the other and mountains as the backdrop. Rare birds and exotic species of mammals can be sighted at the sanctuary. One can spot Tigers, sambar, Himalayan black bear, rare mountain goat, porcupines, golden cats, Indian bison, wild boards, monkey and black capped langur.

Latpanchar, a small hamlet nestled on the northern boundary of the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary in North Bengal. The Sanctuary is located at the eastern Himalayan foothills, bounded by the Teesta and Mahananda rivers. The varying altitudes of the region, from the terai in the south to the mountains in the north is the prime reason for its rich diversity within a small region, and the overwhelming abundance and variety or birdlife as well as other wildlife. This is also the breeding site for the Vulnerable to Near Threatened Rufous-necked Hornbill which starts in April when the female seals herself inside their hollow-chamber nests and sheds her feathers.

Nice Wildlife Sanctuary . Well Maintained and Protected. You can take your car inside but with their guide which is must. As usual we did not see a single animal. But it was a pleasant ride. We also met locals and women with their Kukris. Took us around two hours.

A beautiful wild life sanctuary with tea estates and valleys. It is located in North Bengal. The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri. The place is famous for the variety of birds.

We had experienced one of the best road trips in our life. We trekked sandakphu and got down by taxi to Darjeeling. But in the dark, it was a bit scary. Our driver literally prayed for every second during the ride at night. So we also got scared. But god bless, we had reached our destination in time safely. Never miss your chance to enjoy the road trip with a great landscape view. Tell your driver to put on some good indian music and boom, magical experience.

....Gumba'gaon--- A mountain village arranged like a picture. The height of Gumba'gaon is roughly four thousand feet. But the cold is more than that. Because it is a large and spreading valley. The box houses are arranged in the grooves of the hill. A dense forest has come down from the hill. Mahananda Sanctuary. As soon as you enter the village, you will be greeted by a cold breeze. A hill stream flows through the gap between the big rocky boulders. The beautiful name of this Jhora is Riang Khola. The beauty of colorful flowers around every house in the village will fascinate you. A beautiful ancient church crowns the top of the green hill. Free movement of achin birds in the forests of Gumba'gaon. This beautiful cottage is built for living in a Lepcha-dominated village. The hospitality of the cottage people and the organic food will be remembered for a long time. Gumba'gaon is a wonderful destination for a short vacation. Gumba'gaon's best gift of a wonderful collage of generous, bountiful nature is the sincere hospitality of the simple people.

The wildlife sanctuary is beautiful with tall trees, smooth road. One has to cross this area while going to Darjeeling, Sikkim and Kalimpong.

Saw nice peacock and a fee birds... buy nonetheless animals. Drive is very short and quite expensive. Minimum of 4 people for the drive. But it is nice to get out of the city.

Good place to take kids for wild life sanctuary...although no place/arrangement for the disabled..so disappointing that this is ignored by the authorities and request them to do the needful for the people with special needs

Elephants are among the many species that call the sanctuary home; seeing them there was a highlight of my vacation. The area's charm is enhanced by the nearby river, and I relished spending time there and taking in the tranquil surroundings. Visitors can explore the sanctuary's many walking routes, which are well-maintained. During my visit, I was able to witness a wide variety of creatures, including monkeys and birds. If you're seeking for a stunning and tranquil getaway into nature while visiting Siliguri, I highly suggest going to Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. It's a wonderful spot to unwind and take in the beauty of nature.
