Incredible place to visit. Established by King Ashoka approx 1 BC and upgraded by a series of Kings over the next 3 centuries before it fell to ruins and was finally restored. Definitely take a tour guide and he will run you through the history of the place, the various Kings who contributed to it, and the stories of the Buddha and the Jataka tales carved on the entry pillars.

Unlike me, I'm sure that going in with one of the guides or having some kind of prior knowledge is probably a wiser thing to do than just going in blindly. These are the age old Buddhist stupas that we see in our 200 rupee notes so do go, stand, get a picture clicked with a 200 rupee note. The place is extremely clean and well maintained, a lot of the structures are demolished and u finished probably during all the conflicts that took place. It takes about 1 hour to fully see all the three stupas along with the remains which are there, best to take a booked cab from Bhopal to reach here, it's within an hour's travel away. Overall, definitely a historical place worthy of its fame and kudos to the Indian archeological department for maintaining it as well as it is.

A must place to visit if you are in or around Bhopal. Hardly an hours journey from there in car. Great historic monument and well maintained also. The entry fee is ₹40 and you can even hire a tour guide if you like to know about the history of the place in detail. It also has a well maintained park with shady trees and benches to rest and spend good time. They also have a big parking space and clean washrooms as well outside.

There is also a Gupta period temple and Harshavardhan's pillars. Always take a guide to understand the story and history behind this place. A must visit for every Indian.

Loved this beautiful monument. Thankfully, sanchi stupa has been preserved quite well. There is a lot you'll get to experience and see what we have not told in our books and syllabus. Make sure you visit this place early morning in summers. And keep a water bottle with you too.

The town of Sanchi is synonymous with Buddhist Stupas - hemispherical structures typically containing relics of the Buddha or his followers. The Stupas of Sanchi were constructed on the orders of Emperor Ashoka to preserve and spread the Buddhist philosophy. Sanchi has been protecting these beautiful and sacred architectural wonders, just the way these wonders have been safeguarding ancient history and art of the Mauryan period. The numerous stupas, temples, monasteries and an Ashokan pillar have been the focus of interest and awe for global audiences as well. In fact, UNESCO has given the status of 'World Heritage Site' to the Mahastupa. A visit to Sanchi will bring alive the awe you felt as a child as you listened to the tales of Ashoka. There are several other hidden buddha sites situated within the radius of 30km of  Sanchi that offers significant Buddha teachings. While visiting the Sanchi Stupa you can also see the  Buddha Jambudweep a 17-acre theme park situated right in front of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Sanchi Museum dipecting  life and preaching of Gautam Buddha and Emperor Ashoka.

The Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi, Madhya Pradesh is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The magnificent relics dedicated to Buddhist faith were rediscovered in ruins but its glory still shines through. Located in the North of Bhopal, on a small hilltop are some of the oldest and most interesting Buddhist sites in India. The Great Stupa at Sanchi is one of the oldest stone structures in India, and an important monument of Indian Architecture. It was originally commissioned by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka the Great in the 3rd century BCE. Its nucleus was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha. It was crowned by the chatra, a parasol-like structure symbolising high rank, which was intended to honour and shelter the relics. The original construction work of this stupa was overseen by Ashoka, whose wife Devi was the daughter of a merchant of nearby Vidisha.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the oldest and most well-preserved Buddhist stupas in India. A group of monuments dedicated to lord Buddha. There are three Stupas and temples and monasteries. The main Stupa has the relics of Lord Buddha's bones and was the first Stupa to be constructed by Emperor Ashoka. Words cannot describe the beauty of the work done on the gate. Be sure to hire a certified guide who can tell you about the gates in detail. Best to visit the monument in the morning or at 3pm. You need about 1-2 hours based on level of interest.
