Often considered as the most haunted place in Kolkata, but contrary to this popular belief, the South Park Street Cemetery is actually an extremely calm & serene place, devoid of any paranormal activity. Today, this age-old & historic Christian Cemetery has turned into a major tourist attraction in the city, where you can visit by purchasing a ticket. The tombs & graves of several distinguished personalities from the British era can be seen in this cemetery. It's also the final resting place of the revered poet Henry Derozio, & I had observed that his grave is the only well-maintained grave amongst the hundreds of graves scattered throughout this cemetery. This cemetery is dark, cool, covered with free-growing forest & has an eerie ambience that has the power to erect goosebumps for the first-time visitors. However, it is absolutely safe to visit. Entry fee - ₹20 With Camera - ₹50 Recommended to visit. 👍🏻

This was my 2nd visit to South Park Street Cemetery. As per my experience, this historic burial ground is a calm and relaxing spot consisting of variety of trees, Gothic style tombs and monuments which are surrounded by high brick walls. Although some people say that they are able to spot spiritual beings here but fortunately till now I did not have encounter with any such spiritual being. In short, one can easily spend time here in order to attain peace. P.s. The authorities must emphasize more on the maintenance part as some of the tombs are found to be broken. Entry Fee - 20 Rs without Camera 50 Rs with Camera

Wonderful place to visit whenever you are available. The graveyard of Henry Louis Vivian Derozio will definitely encounter goosebumps in your body. Henry Louis Vivian Derozio was famous for his radical movement, the Young Benga, and for setting a new precedent for patriotic poetry in India. Some of his famous works include: To India – My Native Land and The Fakeer of Jungheera. Apart from this, the graveyard of William Jones is still holding some horror storiedn

I have heard and read it's a haunted place but honestly I didn't feel much about it. I went around 11 30am in the morning so i didn't feel much. It closes at 5pm . Maybe after dark you might feel different. There is a small plant nursery inside where you can purchase plants. It's so nice literally. Near the entrance there is a family who stays and I just think about them . There are not much crowd. It's quite far from Madian and park Street metro so I suggest take bus upto Mullick bazar as it's easier or take an uber/ola . There are many dead bodies more than 200/300 years old. One grave have 2 3 bodies and all of them astonishing died an early death starting from 1 month to 50 years. Nevertheless it's nice for photoshoot. Entry is 20 and dslr is 50. It's opposite to Assembly of God church school

Been there in the morning hours, the place is vast, but unkept. The structures are damaged need repairs, good thing I saw some repair coloring work going on in one of the structures. This place has a very unspeakable sense of peace I dont know why, maybe coz it's final resting place or I feel that way. Its not at all a sad place its a peaceful place. This was my firat visit and I like the vibe of this place. If you there to experience and take pictures Try to go on a overcast day the place will visually change drastically. Its very different on a sunny well lit sunlight filled day. The dark and gloomy experice can only be fully experienced on a heavy overcast. I might visit there when it's dark overcast this time it was sunny still liked the place.

South Park Street Cemetery, formerly known as the 'Great Christian Burial Ground', was one of the earliest non-church cemeteries in the world. The cemetery houses numerous graves and monuments belonging to British soldiers, administrators, and their families. It is also the final resting place of several prominent personalities, including Henry Louis Vivian Derozio and Sir William Jones. It is located on Mother Teresa Sarani (also known as Park Street), Central Kolkata, India. The cemetery is considered to be an important example of colonial-era architecture, with its Gothic-style tombs and monuments, mixed with the rich flavor of the Greek, Egyptian, and Indo-Saracenic styles. In certain instances, elements from Hindu architecture and Islamic tombs have also been adopted. Many of the monuments in the cemetery are adorned with intricate carvings, sculptures, and epitaphs. The structures are primarily constructed of sandstone, marble, and bricks, and feature a variety of shapes and sizes, ranging from simple headstones to grand mausoleums. The burial ground, along with a new road leading to it, known as the Burial Ground Road, was built in 1767. The cemetery and the road were later renamed Park Street after a private deer park established by Sir Elijah Impey. By the year 1785, the cemetery had been extended on the northern side of Park Street.

Nothing to say. Just come & fill the 18th & 19th century Kolkata. The place is situated in Park Street, which is one of the busiest roads in the city. The place is already famous for Satyajit Roy's 'Gorosthane Sabdhan'. In this cemetery, u will visit the graves of many renowned personalities with numerous unknown people. Especially the graves of Derozio, William Jones are major attractions of the graveyard.

20rs ticket per person, valid only for 2hours. If you stay there for more than 2, have to buy another ticket on the time of leaving. Very peaceful place as graveyards should be. Many eminent people's grave is there. No spirit sighting. Lots of insects. Beware of mosquitos.[Adding one of my artworks i did there]

I went there with my friends during the winter and it was a spooky experience. Like many people think the place to be haunted, it's actually not. It's rather a very pleasant place with less crowd and nice sounds of the nature. You will see various tombs of different shapes and sizes spread across the place. The tickte costs 10 INR. If you want a haunting experience I suggest you to go there late when it's almost dark (as the place closes before 5:30PM) and go to the less crowded areas.

The south park street cemetary located in park street was formely known as "The Great Christian Burial Ground" and is a frequently visited place in kolkata. The place is relatively quiet and quaint, and once you get inside you would find yourself aloof from the hustle and bustle of the main city making it a great place for a leisurely stroll. It charges 20rs. ticket per person for 2 hours while if you carry a camera it will charge you 50rs. However in the recent times the place has lost its quite appeal as the amount of people rushing in has exceeded and it becomes quite crowded in weekends. In my last visit have seen large groups of picnic parties sitting around the open places in circles, singing loudly and munchinv on goodies littering around. Have also literally seen women sitting on tombs feeding babies with food and milk. A cultural heritage should be protected and managed. It hurts to see people making the place a picnic spot.

Top tips for visiting South Park Street Cemetery Flooding – While we were here just after the monsoon in October a lot of the cemetery was flooded. So, some you can’t access. Although the park seems to be well maintained there are cracks and uneven floors. So, watch your step! Also, the grassy areas have hidden potholes. Moss – There are flat walking routes to explore the graveyard and most of the tombs are numbered. Some of the the floor had a lot of moss growing on it. So, if it is monsoon season some areas be flooded and super slippy. South Park Street Cemetery Moss There’s lots of moss and overgrow in the park Dogs – There were a lot of dogs that use this as their home. Some will be sleeping in the tombs. Just be careful not to annoy them! One starting chasing us and I freaked out. Photos – Photography is allowed here but remember to be respectful of the dead. This is not the place for a wedding photo shoot, selfie or your next Instagram post. Couples – sorry to be ‘that’ person, but this isn’t a place to come and make out guys! I saw a couple here doing it here and was pretty grossed out. It’s a cemetery. I could think of far more romantic places for a date… South Park Street Cemetery I loved these old signs. They look like they’ve been here since the 19th century lol! Don’t forget to support the graveyard The graveyard is an archaeological site but it relies on work from volunteers, tour guides, and donations to keep running. So, when you’re here, make sure you sign their guidebook, buy a book, or even just a small bottle of water (20 rupees) that they have for sale. Any support you can give would be a big help and make sure the place keeps running for all. Is South Park Street Cemetery Kolkata haunted? It’s really a lovely peaceful place Where is South Park Street Cemetery located in Kolkata? The graveyard can be found on Park Street in Kolkata near Mother Teresa Sani. You will have to be on the lookout, but when you turn down Park Street you’ll see the pink entrance gate quite easily. We decided to walk over here from the main shopping area of Park Street as we were nearby. But, it’s easy to access all over the city using taxis and public transport. How to reach South Park Street Cemetery By Metro The underground subway system in Kolkata is really cheap and efficient. The nearest stop is Maidan and it’s a 20-minute walk from there. The trams are more convenient (more below). You pay by the kilometre and it starts at 10 rupees for 10 kilometres. Anything over 25 kilometres is 25 rupees and that’s the max. You simply buy a token to ride and then look out for your stop. It’s really hot inside as there is no air conditioning. Kolkata Metro The metro is hot and hectic but cheap and efficient By Tram The nearest Tram stop for this would be Mullick Bazaar. From here it’s just a few minute’s walk. You’ll be dropped off at the Lower Circle cemetery, which replaced the one on Park Street! Opening times and ticket prices for South Park Street Cemetery The cemetery is open daily from 10 am – 5 pm. Beyond that time it is locked, so you can’t visit at night time, unfortunately, to look out for ghosts. Although we did see in guidebooks it used to be free of charge, they do charge for entry now. South Park Street Cemetery ticket prices are 20 rupees per Indian and 50 rupees for a foreigner. If you wanted to provide a bigger donation, you can purchase one of their awesome guidebooks for only 100 rupees. I bought one as a souvenir and it had lots of lovely photos in print.

South Park Street Cemetery in Kolkata, India, is a historical gem that transports visitors back in time with its unique blend of colonial architecture and serene greenery. This 200-year-old cemetery, established in 1767, stands as a testament to Kolkata's rich history. The cemetery's most striking feature is its Gothic and neoclassical tombs and mausoleums, which house the remains of many British East India Company officials, soldiers, and notable personalities from the 18th and 19th centuries. The intricate stonework and weathered gravestones add an air of solemn beauty to the site. What sets South Park Street Cemetery apart is its peaceful ambiance. Nice and pleasant place for day out both in summer as well as in winter. Heritage architecture of each tomb is very beautiful. It also has grave of H.L.V. Derozio, pioneer of Indian renaissance. A must visit place for peace and architecture lovers! There's a myth that it's a haunted place but in reality it's so serene and peaceful😌😊

Kolkata Cemetery, a poetic sanctuary of tranquility, where history rests beneath ancient tombstones amid serene whispers of time. In the quiet embrace of the cemetery, beauty unfolds in a unique tapestry of memories and tranquility. A symphony of aged tombstones stands as stoic sentinels, each one a testament to lives lived and stories untold. Nature, in its gentle dance, weaves a mosaic of seasons, casting dappled sunlight through ancient trees that stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time. Wildflowers, resilient in their defiance of solemnity, paint the landscape with hues of delicate pinks and purples. The rhythmic rustle of leaves in the breeze adds a melancholic yet comforting soundtrack to the stillness. Moss-covered statues and weathered angels, with faces softened by the passage of years, lend an ethereal grace to the sacred grounds. As the sun dips below the horizon, the cemetery transforms into a realm of subtle illumination. Candlelight flickers softly, casting shadows that dance across memorial stones, creating an ambiance that is both haunting and serene. Nightfall brings a quietude broken only by the distant hoot of an owl or the gentle rustle of nocturnal creatures. The beauty of the cemetery lies not just in its somberness, but in the poignant reminder it offers – a reminder to cherish the present, honor the past, and find solace in the cyclical nature of life and death. It is a sanctuary where beauty and reflection intertwine, inviting contemplation amidst the echoes of those who once walked the earthly path. Ticket fee 20/individual

I would love to give this a 5-star review. The beautiful decay of the crooked tombs is incredibly picturesque and atmospheric. The problem is that there is no staff to clean up the huge amount of trash that has been allowed to accumulate all throughout the cemetery. It is truly heartbreaking! The manager said earlier financial support for a cleaning staff fell through when COVID hit, but couldn’t some of the entrance fee we are charged now be used to pay for that? The cemetery is also crowded with couples looking for alone time, which made things pretty awkward in a couple of spots. But the tombs themselves are awesome.

A very calm place with greens all around. The graveyards dates back to the 1700's mostly of the ancient elite class. Rather than spooky, I felt at ease at this ground surrounded with souls at peace. However, the place needs to be maintained well since it's a heritage. The entry fee is Rs 20 per person, and Rs 50 with camera. The entry is restricted till 5 p.m.

If you're in Kolkata and looking for an offbeat place to visit for some peace and quiet, this is the place to go. Located near Mullick Bazaar crossing, this is a silent haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Go for a nice walk with your loved one, go on a photo walk by yourself, or just hang out with buddies. This place fits all occasions. The history of this place is as interesting as the photos you'll take and the memories you'll make.

Closed since 1790, this place has its own beauty and serenity. It's the place where the deads are resting in peace. Unfortunately, there are some tombs and structures which've been graffitied by some micreants. They've zero respect to the sanctity of the place. It's possible due to very low entry fee to this place. It will be wise to increase the entry fee to Rs. 50 per person in general (without camera, as those who carries cameras costing in lakhs, are more responsible & from educated sections of the society).

Fan of everything spooky and haunted, visit South Park Cemetery. One of the most haunted places in India, this place is equal parts beautiful and equal parts eerie. Established in 1767, the cemetery was founded by the British and is a remnant of their architectural style. Take a walk through the cemetery during the day and you will find plenty of spots that are worth admiring. However, by night the place is shut down and entry is prohibited because of the strange incidents that have happened in the past.

It's a very peaceful place. But the tombs and architectures are broken and falling apart. The place needs to be maintained well as it holds so much of historic value. We cannot built another cemetery like this. It would be very kind if the authorities take an initiative to restore the broken architectures and to maintain the place so that it doesn’t lose it’s heritage value. The ticket price is 20/- per person. Please put on some odomos as you may have some mosquito bites! But, this place calms your soul.

Especially near the exit gate, which is closed, no crowd, bad smell, and feels something not good. I would suggest go in a group or where there are some people. After all more than 200 years old graveyard, I hope you understand. Exit within 2 hrs. Its a rule. Good luck.

One of the biggest gothic graveyard in Kolkata where history still alives with near about 1600 tombs . It is located just opposite of The Assembly of God Church school. They charge 20/- as entry fee and for professional camera extra charges will be applicable. One thing we must guarantee that after enter in the cemetery you will definitely find a completely different scenario, as the outside is full of chaos and crowd but the inside is quite peaceful. Most of the tombs are 200-250 years old. If you are planning to explore Kolkata then this place definitely should be in your list.
