Every month there will be a rocket launched from thumba centre. We need to take prior permission online. Mobiles and own vehicles are not permitted inside. Vssc has separate buses to take the people from the canal gate. It's visual treat to watch the rocket launch 😀

This is a historic place for Indian space program. In 1963, a Nike Apache rocket was launched from here and it became the first ever launch from Indian soil. In 1967, the first Indian made rocket was launched from this place. This place still launches sounding rockets on every third Wednesday of the month and it attracts several visitors especially students. Moreover, there is a space museum which has a beautiful collection of model rockets, satellites and various other space related technologies.

Indian space research had been started here in TERLS by Dr.Vikram Sarabhai and his team. M/s.Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre is carrying out the space missions from here. A Space Museum is functioning here, open to Students.

It's a great place. Lots of different sections are here. Testing, assembling, quality checking etc. And here there is a space museum which will tell you a complete story of Indian space programme . There will be launching of sounding rockets monthly on every 3rd Wednesday. Will feel very proud to be an Indian at this atmosphere.

A restricted area under Department of Space, Government of India. This the birthplace of Indian space programme. Many eminent personalities such as APJ Abdul Kalam, Vikram Sarabhai, G Madhavan Nair worked here. Not accessible to general public. However during space week celebrations in the month of October, the space museum (An old church building which was the control centre during the first sounding rocket launch from there in 1963) is open to public. Special sounding rocket launches are also arranged for the public to witness during this time.

The Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS) is an Indian spaceport operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation. It is located in Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram which is near the southern tip of mainland India, very close to earth's magnetic equator. It is currently used by ISRO for launching sounding rockets. The first rockets were assembled in former St Mary Magdalene church, which houses now a space museum . Location Thumba is located very close to the magnetic equator of the Earth (located just north of Thumba), making it the ideal location for scientists to conduct atmospheric research. In fact, Thumba's location at 8°32'34" N and 76°51'32" E is ideal for low-altitude, upper atmosphere and ionosphere studies. Thumba is a small fishing village situated close to the Thiruvananthapuram airport in Kerala. Thumba is also one of the farthest points from Pakistan, China and Bangladesh (although Bangladesh was founded several years after TERLS was founded)[3]
