It is also known as Pong reservoir or Pong Dam.This dam was built in 1975 named in honor of Maharana Pratap, this reservoir or lake is a famous wildlife sanctuary and one of the 25 international wetland sites declared by Ramsar Sammel in India.

Pong dam is constructed on Beas river in Himachal Pradesh just adjacent to Punjab border near Talwara town. It is only mud constructed dam in India. One can pass here after obtain the pass from authorities and allowed to go from approximately 5am to 9l10pm in summer and 6am to 8pm in winter and one has to reach or cross one security point to another point in 20 minutes. Due to security reasons clicking is not allowed. Boating is allowed on Himachal side but no proper services are available. However one can visit dam with the prior permission of Executive Engineer.

Good scenic place to explore while crossing border between Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Taking photos is not allowed so I'm not attaching any! See it with your own eyes :)

Need permission from Talwara BBMB office to visit Pong dam these days for tourism. Register entry of vehicle number and name is mandatory while going over pong dam barrage. If you want to do boating and visit Rancer Island, I recommend to go on Nagrota Surian side of pong dam lake.
