I enjoy touring state capitol buildings when I travel. We went through security & got a self guided tour pamphlet at the tour desk. I did call up in advance to check if they have guided tours, unfortunately they did not have one when we planned. I would recommend a guided tour, as it gets you in to the house and senate chambers. I did some research before visiting the capitol so was able to relate things. A very nice capitol building with ornate interior. It is beautiful and well maintained. The interior is modeled in the Italian Renaissance style with doors made of Indiana oak and Indiana limestone used throughout the structure. The pinnacle of the building is 256 feet high, it was the second tallest building in Indiana at the time of its completion. The four-story building is designed in the shape of a cross. A large central rotunda with a glass domed ceiling connects the four wing. The interior is marked by beautifully intricate blue stained glass dome, marble floors, granite columns, an ornate balcony, and period wall and ceiling designs. It was remarkable and best viewed from the upper floor. The Indiana Capitol is one of the few where all three branches of government still meet in the Capitol! There are stairs/or elevators to all the levels and each floor is different. The first floor houses the governor's office and the offices of the administration. Enjoyed walking around the third and fourth floors taking in the architecture and viewing the various chambers through the windows since they were not open for access. We saw the statues of past presidents and other public art structures surround the building. It's worth a visit learning something about history. This was one of the beautiful state houses I have been to and also one of the state house that didn't explain much about their rich history. We wouldn't have known much about their history if I did not do research prior visiting. We couldn't get much information on the two page pamphlet they provided. Also there was no attendant in the tour desk so no information was provided about anything. Comparatively I felt they didn't care about their visitors, so three stars. The entrance was not stroller friendly. There is paid parking and metered street parking around the building.

Whether you love Indiana history, appreciate art and architecture, or geek out on civics, the Indiana Statehouse is a place every Hoosier should visit at least once. Yes I know, you probably went once on a school field trip. But be honest, you probably weren't paying attention through most of that, so it’s worth it to go again and really experience it this time. The mature trees around the grounds are quite lovely, especially in the fall. And one of the sycamores located just south of the main entrance grew from a seed that went to the moon — THE MOON! Don’t’ believe me? Google “NASA moon trees.” Yep, totally true! The building’s architectural elements are also really remarkable, both inside and out. Corinthian columns, marble floors, carved wood doorways, glowing chandeliers. Of course, the crown jewel is the glass ceiling in the rotunda. Happening beneath this colorful masterpiece, you’ll often find public demonstrations and gatherings about key issues for the state legislature. But as long as you’re quiet and respect that this is an important workplace, you can still walk around and enjoy the building even when they’re in session. I also think the building is interesting for its significance in our state’s government process. And as you walk past the house and senate chambers, you’ll also see beautiful statues and paintings depicting many of Indiana’s key historical figures. Definitely take a tour if you have time, you’ll learn so much!

Open to the public during regular business hours. You can come in the east side entrance, pass through a metal detector and you are free to roam the Statehouse. The governor's office is on the first floor, lieutenant governor the second floor and both the Senate and House of Representatives is on the second floor. Other important state offices are also located throughout and can be visited. There is also an information desk. It has lots of neat info about the Statehouse, history and more. I recommend visiting for info. Tours are also available. We were lucky enough to visit on a day when they were out of session so parking on the street was ample (parking meter). It also gave us the chance to visit the different offices to include the governor's. We were able to visit his office, sit in his desk chair and more. It was a pretty cool experience and I highly recommend visiting!

Nice visit during Saturday. No crowded and quiet. Only cons is not guided visit on weekend. But you will have time to enjoy the architecture, decor, glass work, and space while reading about its history. Very unique with respect to other Capitol buildings in the U.S.

Always love going to the state house. We have been here many times. Beautiful gardens, well kept lawns, nice walk areas. The statehouse building is amazing. We appreciate our representatives and pray for them regularly.

State Capitol Buildings are designed to represent the best of their state and this one sure does. Regal, baroque, and imposing architecture fits the bill. It was nice to see the legislature active during meetings with an air of gravitas often lost among a constituent's daily routines. Although if you work in the Capitol building everyday I guess that can be mundane after a while as well.

Highly recommend doing a tour! Are 9 and 11 year old daughters had a great time and learned a lot about the different branches of government in Indiana history. The architecture is absolutely stunning and we got to see where the different laws get passed. Great family experience and the tour guide kept it interesting for our daughters. Indiana has the longest running Supreme Court building in the country... 130 years

It was so wonderful to be able to tour this historic building! So many Indiana residents don't know the beautiful history that's right here in the middle of downtown Indianapolis. It was neat to see the government in action as well as peek at the art and architecture. Our tour guide was amazing, answering all of our questions and going at our pace. I'd highly recommend everyone take the chance to do this tour sometime!

Happy to have taken the time to stop by here. What better thing to do than to learn about the history of the city you're vacationing in? This was really breath-taking, I'm not surprised there's over thousands of pictures of this pleasantly-aesthetic building. Surprisingly spent most of our time here in their library section where law books as well as anything historic were available for public use. The lady who worked there was so kind as to tell us a bit of history. Interesting fact: Only the chandelier lights on the fourth floor were authentic, while the rest are re-mastered replicates!

Phenomenal Free Tour! Take the tour! I learned SO much more than I anticipated on my tour. The tour guide was amazing! The building is full of beauty, I learned about Indiana’s government, and the history of Indiana. My favorite stories were about the Governor’s large table, and the restoration of the historical stencils around the building. Highly recommend! Can I give it more than five stars?! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nice building but there was only paid parking available. There was street parking but had to pay the meters. I think most other capitol buildings usually have free parking available.

Very hopeful and positive. It's great to know there are some tough conversations being discussed, heard and advocated for. "If nothing changes, nothing changes. But, if one thing changes, that opens doors for more change." A Piece of Serenity

It is one of the most beautifully designed Capitol buildings I've seen. If you are in Indianapolis I recommend going.

Moved to Indiana 5 years ago and this is why I will be selling my house and moving back to Ohio. VIN checks (required but must pay a fee and you have to drive to police pay then they come out. Very inconvenient), High Vehicle Taxes/Registration, Unhelpful State Agencies. You guys are just use to being nickel and dimed. I know a 70 year old homeless man in Indiana who gets 70/month in food stamps. I know because I drive him to the store. This state clearly doesn't care about its citizens or their lives. I'll take my 6 figues job and taxes someplace that cares.
