(Translated by Google) Historical, artistic and ethnological museum, dedicated to research, conservation and exhibition of objects related to the cultural universe of blacks in Brazil. It is located in Ibirapuera Park, in São Paulo, in the Padre Manuel da Nóbrega Pavilion - building that is part of the park's architectural complex designed in the 1950s by architect Oscar Niemeyer, with structural projects by engineer Joaquim Cardozo. It is worth knowing, take your family too. One of the greatest museums anywhere! So nice to not see lots of white European faces everywhere. Thrilling to see art from a different perspective. I loved every second of this Museum and was not prepared for how much it moved me.

10 out of 10!!! The Museu Afro Brasil is a cultural necessity that beautifully captures the essence of African influence on Brazilian heritage. The art collection is magnificent!!! There’s a library. I only wish they offered tours.

Some interesting pieces and lots of history cab be found here but i don't feel it was displayed engaging enough. There were some really interesting 3D pieces and artifacts but for the most part it was just alot of the same and the flow of the museum (literally how you navigate through the history) was so unorganized you almost needed a guide. There are 2 floors and they ask that you put belongings in the locker.

So much to see here. There aren't descriptor plaques in English, but it was still such an immersive experience. You get a feel for the history through experiencing the many treasures of this collection -- art, tools, textiles, and much more.

I found this museum on Google, 2 years ago and finally got a chance to visit. This was an excellent and emotional experience. More people NEED to go here and learn about the history. Side note, I am an American of African descent and completely enjoy it.

You learn a lot about AfroBrasilian people through impressive photos, writings, videos ... It's a good place to start when you come to SP.. And then you may choose to walk in Avenue Paulista to understand better and feel the city-spirit.

What an awesome museum that not only gives you a perspective of the slave trade, but more importantly the massive cultural influence that the Afro Brasilian culture has had on Brazil, one of the highlights of my visit to São Paulo

Almost nothing in English. If you go to learn about history, culture and traditions, but do not read Portuguese, you will see a lot of pretty things, but miss the significance of most of it.

Urgent editing needed. The clutter in this exhibition space is overwhelming. Its like they dumped the entire storage in every inch of the venue. Objects have no space to breathe nor be appreciated, nor understood in the completely illogical and uncomprehensable display that will make your stomach ill. MASP is the only essential Museum in São Paulo. The Bienal is fantastic if you catch it. MAM and MAC are tired.

Located inside the parque ibarapuera, this treasure of an artifact collection stands proudly as a monument to Afro Brazilians and their role in the construction of modern day Brazil. By far one of the most moving museums I have ever visited. The museum is separated into three levels, each of which illustrates the various indigenous groups that composes modern and former brazil. What I enjoyed most of the museum are the artifacts. No where else have I seen as many artifacts up close than here. One can truly see the work and ingenuity in a lot of the pieces. From a historical standpoint this place is priceless. They have an actual preserved hull of a ship used to transport slaves from Africa to Brazil. Playing above the ship's hul are pictures of when the ship was recovered. The front desk agent told me the hull is one of the most seen pieces of the museum's collection. More contemporary, a good piece of the museum consists of artworks by late artists of Afro descent. If you are in the area I would highly recommend you visit this museum. It stands above the rest in São Paulo in my opinion.

This gallery is a masterpiece - I’ve never seen such a diverse collection before. It even outdoes the African-American museum in Washington. An amazing collection of art, history, heartbreak and of course - triumph! You need at least a few hours to go through the museum in detail and most exhibits have an English explanation - brilliant!

This place is HUGE and very rich in content! Vast variety of art from tribal to contemporary abstract to realist, from painting to sculpture, from tools they used to use to make coffee/cheese to the accessories/clothes they used to wear! This place will make you realize how rich the Afro-Brasilian culture is. The only downside is that all the descriptive text is written in Portuguese and not in English! Entrance is 3brl if you're a student!

Very impressive museum with a large collection. I particularly loved the temporary exhibit on the tools used by enslaved Africans and of course the slave ship. However, the museum doesn't get 5 stars from me despite how much I loved it because not only is the flow between exhibits a little haphazard, but the idea that a museum as great does not provide multi-language translations or audio guides for people who don't know Portuguese well is crazy. Without being able to understand Portuguese you're left to randomly roam around while not understanding the significance of what you're seeing. If you're one of those people, go on a Wednesday when it's free admission so even if you're disappointed, you didn't lose any money.

This is one of the best museums focusing on the African diaspora that I have ever had the pleasure to visit. I've been to similar museums in Ghana, Tanzania, Washington DC and Curacao and this museum really stands out as one of the best. The vast collection encompasses everything from folk art to popular music to the slave trade Brazil's history. You could easily spend a full day here and not taking everything there is to see, particularly since in addition to their permanent collection they often have special exhibits. The curatorial approach definitely deserves special mention: This Museum overwhelms you, but in a really good way. It draws you in and makes you ask questions It helps you to see things that you wouldn't have seen before. I'm particular note. I loved the display of the Miracles. Well, almost none of the curatorial notes are presented in English I did find that I was able to take pictures of the text and use my Android phone to translate the text into English. It was a bit awkward at times, but it was definitely worth reading the curatorial notes which I thought were brilliantly written.

Very good museum. Good news was it was free the day I came (Saturday). I wish there were more signs on what is where. I left before seeing half of it bc I didn’t know where to go. Also, all signs and plaques are in Portuguese, so if you dont speak Portuguese (English and Spanish for me) it can be hard to get a true feel for the artists and exhibits. Love learning about my people though 🫶🏾🤎

A nice museum with a lot of historical context on black history. It is a shame that it is only in Portuguese. Getting in was easy, they have lockers to store your bags. Plan this museum with your trip to Park Ipirabuera as the museum is within the park vicinity. It is also under construction like the Museum of São Paulo.

Extremely unique museum exhibiting some finer parts of the African diaspora that is normally hidden from view. This shines a spot light on some of the art and culture of the native tribes in Africa, situations they have endured and treasured artifacts from many generations. Wide variety of artifact sizes from the smallest figurines to massive models that take up a large room. The space is extremely well used but also confusing to easily navigate and feels like a maze. Got lost a couple times when walking around. Admission prices are extremely reasonable and the locker rooms located near the entrance are large. Staff are all extremely friendly and relatively few visitors make for a great way to take in the artifacts with peace and quiet. I only wish the opening times were longer and if there were more English translations.

Museum text is generally not available in English, but the museum staff was able to help me in English and you could purchase an English pamphlet about the curation. No gender neutral restrooms. Unsure about wheelchair accessibility. Located in the park so quite scenic to walk to. There are capoeira and contemporary sections! The quaint gift shop wasn’t memorable in any way. Enjoyed spending two hours here.

Wonderful huge museum. Everybody should go to this museum to see the Permanent Collection of Candomble statues and authentic costumes from 1800s to now from Brazil. Lots to look at, learn and study about slavery in Brazil and inter-ethnic composition of the country. Touched on racism and human rights throughout the exhibits in large sections to walk through. Wheelchair accessible from large ramp with enlarged photos and posters as you go up (like NYC's Guggenheim Museum). Literature inside almost exclusively written in Portuguese. Would have been very helpful if explanation cards could also be translated into English for a wider audience to enjoy. Parking was free but unmanageably located far away and in the mud. Fabulous items on display everywhere on a large scale. Highly recommended also to see rotating exhibits from local artists including Afro-Brazilian painters, with museum docents accompanying tour groups. Could have stayed another 3 hours to view the Amazon Indian huts, feather displays, tools and photographs. A wonderful overall experience!

I wonder why this museum doesnt get more spotlight. Very very rich, maybe too dense even (but i’m still putting 5 stars to increase exposure). And I believe, super important in understanding the cultural and social background of a large part of this huge, complex country. Also, there’s a temporary exhibition on Indigenous culture with amazing featherwork.

There are far too few resources for English speakers. I'd recommend hiring a guide if possible. Still, a fascinating museum. Very academic though, not really for casual visits. You have to put in work to get something out of it. No food onsite.

An amazing museum, beautifully curated and informative. I'd spent 7 days in Sao Paula and this was the first and only place I saw Afro Brazilian history and stories told - a significant part of the population who have grateful impacted and shaped Brazilian culture. I absolutely recommend. A unique and important experience at a truly special place. If you don't speak Portuguese download google translate in advance so you can tap into the rich information for each exhibit.

Fascinating museum about the Afro-Brazilian people and their history, including exhibits on several African countries as well as Brazil itself. A mix of sculpture, photography, clothing, modern art, with long interesting descriptions and analysis (almost all in Portuguese). The park itself is also lovely for lunch and a stroll or cycle.

The museum was surprisingly elaborate and had a wide range of exhibits for its relative newness. I had been to the British Museum and I was able to see pieces I have seen there in the Afro Brasil Museum which says a lot about its ability to decrease the access challenges that people of the third world have in seeing such exhibits. I really appreciated the attention to details and thought that went into the various representation the afro-brasilian presence. As a person from the English-speaking Caribbean it was really refreshing seeing the similarities despite our temporal and linguistic differences. The section on Bahia and their independence effoets reminded me a lot of the Haitian experience. The security personnel told us that you are able to enter the Museum free on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Not sure if this is for all visitors but it is worth checking this out in advance. Hats off to Mr. Araujo for his role in establishing the museum.
