Beautiful spot, when there's a cloudless sky you can see all the way to the sea. I'd recommend doing the loop clockwise as it makes the descent either. It's tough going if you're not an experienced hill walker but, it's worth the effort as the views from the top are spectacular. Took me about 4 hours with a stop for food and refueling at the top.

This hike was quite the experience. Echoing what others have said, this is a difficult hike for sure and the path isn't always clear. The views are absolutely stunning though and well worth it. We managed the whole loop in a little over 4 hours, but I tecommend taking your time and allowing for a bigger window of possible, just to enjoy and take it all in. Save some energy for the decent as well. It will hammer your knees and take whatever energy you have left.

Challenging scramble, but well worth the view. Bring hiking boots and some physical fitness.

Absolutely stunning, although I have some important statements to make. when climbing up the mountain I would highly suggest going left. (Clockwise). If you go right it’s ALOT harder climbing up to the top. I made that grave mistake. But it was fun! If you want a challenge take it! Wear shoes with grips (or boots). It honestly makes your life a lot easier ESPECIALLY near the middle there is this HUGE scramble, not walking. A scramble down/up (going right it’s down, left it’s up). Although it is a bit exaggerated it’s still hard. I would highly suggest sliding on your bottom if your going down. If you are going up you will need those grips! Talking about the huge scramble, dogs. Dogs are completely ALLOWED on this mountain but just be extremely careful, especially on the scramble. Also be careful of the sheep. If your dog doesn’t cooperate and doesn’t have a decent skill in manoeuvring/ climbing rocks it would be nearly impossible and way too risky. I brought my Belgian Malinois with me. While walking through many people told me it would be impossible for my dog to pass the scramble. Luckily as I said before it was a bit exaggerated and my dog had a good experience in climbing and he cooperated with me so i was able to pass it. Although it was hard! After the scramble you are nearly done the mountain. You have to pass some difficult rocks and terrain so be careful but once you pass that you are good to go. BRING WATER. You will definitely need it. So the conclusion. If you want to climb this mountain I would suggest having some sort of experience in climbing before you take on this. But.. the genus of the lake form the mountain are STUNNING.

To say its surreal when you reach the top is an understatement. The view is absolutely breathtaking! The pictures of Coumshinguan Lough will never compare to experiencing it in person. Even the stream you cross to get to the lake doesn't look real, it looks like a movie set. Hiking boots and a waterproof jacket are essential as the weather is changeable. When you come out of the forest go right. When you walk over the steps keep left with the fench. As you walk up watch out on your right for a small wall and start your climb here. The first part can be hiked up and over or around the hill to the right. From the lake start on the left to reach the highest part, its much easier. When your sitting up the top looking down at the lake pinch yourself cause trust me it doesn't seem real. It's just amazing!

A really really really great hike. Very undiscovered really, as not much people. We counted 5 during our 4 hour trip. Nice walk up to the top, no clear pathway and you start off in a forest. You'll walk past plenty of wild sheep too on your way to the lake and then upwards to the top if you so wish. The view from the top is stunning.

One of the most incredible places you'll ever see. It's a bit of a slog, but 30 mins or so will have you at the lakeside. Another hour of a very steep climb will see you at the summit & then you can do the loop around, but not for anyone that isn't used to hillwalking.

Awe-inspiring sites await you at the top. This is a spectacular hike that provides everything Ireland has to offer in terms of mystical views. The lough is gorgeous, but you can also see as far out as the ocean, and plenty of Ireland’s “patch work quilt” geography. This is NOT an easy hike. I would categorize this as hard. And there are areas on the ascent which are daunting and quite dangerous. Like other Irish hikes, the trails are a bit scattered, and when scrambling up rocky, muddy heights, it can be nerve-wrecking. But the scenes at the top make it well worth it. It flattens out at the top and serves as a great location to pause for a snack and a look around. This is about a 4 hour hike up and around from the car park. The left side is more difficult than the right side.

This is a tough hike. You will need decent footwear, water and food. It took us 3.5 hours(7k). There is a small car park that fill up early. It was very windy at the top, and boggy. Go clockwise around the lake. Some signage is badly needed to show the route(s). The route we took was extremely difficult, NOT suitable if you don't have a good head for heights. Having said all this, it was a fantastic experience with amazing views.

Really awesome trail around the lake from higher altitude. The first third on the clockwise route was very hard for my friends and I as we had 20kg backpacks each with photo equipment and camping stuff. Don't recomand to do this part with such a weight on your back as there's parts where you have to use your hands to climb (instead of 1.5h, it took us 3h to get to the beautiful stones). Very stony, but stable. The views are also beautiful, exactly how you find in all the photos online!

Great hiking trail with a breathtaking reward at the end. I really recommend this place for any one that is looking for an adventure. Bring water and food as the trail is an average one.

It is challenging hike to the lake, but worth it. The higher you climb the better view opens up of county Waterford. You will not be lost as on some days it can be quite crowded. Took us 5 h to climb up, have picnic, swim and go back to car park and all this with 4 kids. To hike around the lake climb on your left and come back from right hand side of the lake(when facing the lake). Good grip shoes will safe you from sliding off some rocks.

This is one of the best and a little bit challenging hike that I had in Ireland. Oh my! The view of the lake from the top of the mountain is just wonderful 😍! Around 4 hours hiking bit worth the time. I can't recommend this enough.

(Translated by Google) A very nice place for a morning or afternoon walk. The path runs along the shore of the lake. A bit wild and green. (Original) Bardzo fajne miejsce na poranny czy popołudniowy spacer. Ścieżka biegnie wzdłuż brzegu jeziora. Trochę dziko i zielono.

Beautiful place to go for a walk and a picnic. The walk up the back can be tricky in spots. Either go with someone that knows the area or with a map.

Amazing but the loop hike is quite difficult (occasional novice hiker), met loads of people on our climb and many turned back at various points and others completed it. The lake itself is a manageable hike to get to without doing the loop and absolutely wonderful to swim in.

Started at Kilclooney wood car park and did the loop starting from the left. Had not hiked in 5 months so it felt tough, very scenic. I wouldn’t bring a beginner on this one though.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful place for hiking, a very beautiful lake that is often visited by tourists. You can also come to the mountains, which are accessed from both sides of the lake. Beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding area, as well as the ocean and many villages that can be seen in beautiful weather. I heartily recommend to everyone. Greetings. A place of awesome power and mystery. Until 5 years ago there were very few people heading there. It was a place of solitude especially in winter. I grew up nearby and spent many days camping in the area. Parking access can be limited during the summer so head there early in the morning. The loop is a great trek or technical run but it can be quite dangerous. Dont go alone! You might find the ghost of Lakandarra Jim...

  • 5/5 Kilna C. 3 years ago on Google
Not easy hike but defo worth the view. If you want to see the view from high up, get a map and follow the path clockwise, there is no sign to get to the lake, so it can be challenging to find the path. Try it on a nice weather.
