Finding the Hilton Head Island Recreation Center was one of the best parts of winter on the island. As soon as taking a tour and telling my husband about the facilities, we joined. The Rec center is impeccably clean, has the newest fitness equipment and outstanding water and fitness facilities. It also offers a wide range of classes , spotless locker rooms and great outdoor Rec facilities as well.

Amazing space for a workout. This centre has two floors, various rooms, a fitness centre, outdoor courts and a playground. There are also fitness studios with classes. In this review I am addressing the fitness centre which is on the second floor overlooking the basketball court. The equipment area can get a bit crowded if you have more than six people. However, there are a lot of cardio machines. There are two cardio areas, a TRX station (which almost never gets used), weight machines, free weights with a couple of benches, and a small stretching area. The only issue I have is the mirrors which look a bit like circus mirrors that make you look a bit wide. One more thing, the staff is amazing.

Spectacular facilities everything beautiful and clean. Amazing park available for public use. For kids this park is phenomenal. The rec center has amazing youth sports programs. And adult leagues too. Everyone is helpful and community driven. Older kids helping younger grow to love sports an exercise. Water bathrooms a Pool even. So whether you want to buy a membership or merely enjoy the free amenities, there is something to be had for everyone

This is the most amazing rec center I have ever seen. It is new and has everything: pools, soccer fields, football fields, even lacrosse, volleyball, softball, baseball. Tennis courts. Pickleball courts in the back where some construction was going on. I was able to play even though I was a tourist. They have you sign a disclaimer online at the front office and pay a nominal fee. You can probably do that for some of the indoor sports and swimming. If you like a particular sport you don't have to forgo playing if you travel to Hilton Head. This place has it all.

Handicap people should be aware that the Rec Center is only friendly to those who don't bring up issues like the handicap parking spots that the Rec Center uses for their equipment. They invited me to get a membership elsewhere. The facility is very nice but becoming more and more crowded making work out times longer due to waiting for equipment. Parking is another big problem at the Rec Center especially for elderly and disabled people. Disabled parking spaces are quite often taken by non disabled people. Even after pointing this out to staff and management repeatedly it still has not been addressed. My conclusion is that the Rec Center only cares about how much money they can make and not about how to provide good service to its members. Thank you for your response however it did not address any of the issues but merely stated why you can't or won't do anything about them. Furthermore I have alerted the staff every time I see a vehicle without a handicap ID and they tell me there is nothing they can do, I even suggested they alert the Sheriff. Perhaps more training is required for staff. I would also like to point out that the 2 handicap spots on the side by the pool do not meet the state requirements for 2 reasons 1) there is a sign that has been parked in one of the spots for over a year now making it inaccessible 2) there is no unlocked door within a reasonable distance for these 2 spots. I intend to follow up with the state ADA regarding this matter. I make these points not to complain but to give you an opportunity to improve your facility for all.

Played outdoor pickleball here. Organized, with 5 courts and access to an outdoor restroom. The courts are on concrete pads, some with lots of other lines, so it can be a little confusing. There's also not much room between the service line and grass and some of the courts have cracked concrete and can be slick if moist from dew or a prior rain. The games are competitive.

The Island Rec Center is a well-maintained facility with clean equipment and facilities. The standard types of equipment available at the center make it a great option for those looking for a basic workout. However, there are some downsides to the center as well. One negative aspect of the Island Rec Center is that there can be occasional wait times for equipment. This can be frustrating for those who have a limited amount of time to work out. Additionally, the indoor facility closes down over holidays due to floor resurfacing, which can be inconvenient for regular members. The center also experiences parking issues during weekend events and meetings, which can make it difficult for members to find a parking spot. Additionally, noise levels indoors can be high during these events, which can be a distraction for those trying to work out. For individuals with disabilities, there are some concerns as well. The Island Rec Center does not have automatic doors for entry or exit, which can make it difficult for those with mobility issues. Disabled parking spaces are often used by individuals without permits, which can make it challenging for those who truly need these spaces. Furthermore, the fitness area is located upstairs, making it difficult for those with mobility issues to access when the only elevator is inoperable. Additionally, disabled parking is inadequate. The disabled parking spaces on the side of the building do not meet the requirement of being closest to a functioning entrance; one of the spaces is often utilized by the Island Rec Center to park a trailer, which is not acceptable. In summary, the Island Rec Center is a well-maintained facility with standard equipment, but it does have some downsides. The occasional wait times for equipment, noise levels during events, and lack of accessibility for individuals with disabilities are all issues that need to be addressed. Overall, the Island Rec Center has the potential to be a great facility for all members if these concerns are taken into consideration and addressed appropriately.

A great place to play pickleball for a nominal fee. Good place to meet many people from different states as most who play here are visiting only. A well-oiled system for determining who plays with whom when-save for the rare person who feels that he/she can move the paddles around. $5 for 4 hours of PB.

Very nice facility - staff is great and multiple choices on type of work out. Has aerobic machines, weight machine, aerobic room walking track and free weights. also a separate swimming pool. Only complaint is that the weight area is small and can get crowded. They have multiple area with weights and different type of stretching area which helps. Spinning bikes and online workout videos are good too. Beautiful setting and plenty of kids/young adults around too.

Excellent gym! Well maintained equipment, good variety of machines, TRX station, rowers, cardio machines. Outdoor pool is nicely heated,. 8 lanes. Lots of classes offered. Venue is bright, colorful, high ceilings, lots of movement of air. Always very clean and all the patrons are great about cleaning the machines after use. Very highly recommend.

4 of us were visiting from N GA. We played pickleball at the rec center. Everyone was pleasant and accomodating. We had a very nice time. They also have an off site place to play which was not as nice nor accomodating. Thanks to everyone at the rec center for some good play!!!

I was visiting the island and since I teach Aqua Zumba I wanted to try this Aqua Zumba class. The facility was clean, and already getting busy at 8 a.m. If you are visiting a class, come early to fill out paperwork. That took me about ten minutes. All was fine though because the instructor was late too, which the other members said is normal but was ok because class is 45 minutes and on the schedule for an hour. Vickey was very engaging and fun. The class isn’t high intensity but definitely fun and you feel the pool party vibe. For $7 drop in rate, I would highly recommend! That price is a day aqua pass, so you can stay and take the aqua fitness class that uses dumbbells and noodles, too.

Great place and beautifully renovated. However lifeguard staff was not friendly and open lap swimming was complicated and very crowded. Patrons were friendly and everyone shared lanes but to get a full set in was very challenging and the guards were not understanding.
