Maithon dam is the most famous picnic cum tourist spot from Dhanbad city. It's a beautiful site to watch specially when the dam gates are opened and water is gushing out in full force. You can do boating and enjoy the view, while buying boating ticket buy it from their ticketing counter or there is a great chance you might be getting cheated by paying higher price.

The place is pleasing beautiful , place is great for picnic and visit with friends. I will highly recommend you to go for boating, it will take 150-200 per person as per season ( we visited on 20 January) . There are many islands, two popular islands SOBUJDEEP AND ANANDADEEP , boater's (sailors) will take you to there . And there is hill before entering the dam , it has a Shiva temple. You must visit to pay your tributes .

The most beautiful place is situated on the border between West Bengal and Jharkhand. Both sides are well maintained by CAPF. Boat facilities are there. People can move along the dam bridge and can take pictures without being hampered by the photo prohibited area. But can't visit the thermal power station without permission from higher authorities.

The Maithon Dam is located at Maithon, 48 km from Dhanbad, in the state of Jharkhand. It is 15,712 ft (4,789 m) long and 165 ft (50 m). high. This dam was specially designed for flood control and generates 60,000 kW of electric power. There is an underground power station, the first of its kind in the whole of South East Asia. The dam is constructed on the Barakar River. The lake is spread over 65 square kilometres (25 sq mi). DVC-Damodar Valley Corporation Inauguration plaque of Maithon Dam The visionary Chief Ministers of Bihar and West Begal Dr. Srikrishna Sinha and Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy persuaded central government about the benefits of this mega project. DVC is the first-ever multipurpose river valley project of independent India which came into being on July 7, 1948 by an act of Constituent Assembly (Act no. XIV of 1948). DVC has its command area of approx 24,235 km² spreading across the Damodar basin. The upper valley consists of two entire districts (Dhanbad and Bokaro) and eight districts partly in the state of Jharkhand. The lower valley on the other hand consists of five districts partly (Burdwan, Hooghly, Bankura, Howrah and Purulia) in the state of West Bengal. DVC was set up with the intent of promoting and operating the schemes which may cause social and economic uplift in the valley region.[citation needed] Sunset at Maithon dam Prospects and opportunities Proficient management of water resources through dams, canals and barage, DVC facilitated irrigation as well as industrial and domestic water supply which at large benefited the region as a whole. DVC has been generating, transmitting & distributing electrical energy since 1953 and has succeeded not only in meeting the expectation of consumers but has also elevated its height in its performance. The full form of DVC is Damodar valley corporation and since it uses its main source of water from the Damodar dam it is named so. Recently it has collaborated with TATA Power and a thermal power project has been started, named Maithon Power Limited (MPL). Earlier DVC had installed few Gas Turbines for generation of electricity, a unique technology in the entire region introduced for the very first time in Maithon. They are no more functional now. DVC has provided employment to thousands of families and is continuing to do so. It also provides facility for engineering and management graduates to undergo training in their respective fields. Maithon 48 km from Dhanbad, Maithon is termed as mother's abode. It has the biggest reservoir in DVC. Conceived on the lines of Tennessee Valley, USA it has been designed for flood control & generates 60,000 kW of electric power. It is built on the river Barakar. It has its unique underground power station, the first of its kind in South Asia. The lake is spread over an area of 65 km². It is 15,712 ft (4,789 m). long & 165 ft (50 m) high. flood Control promotion & operation of schemes for irrigation water supply for domestic & industrial use navigation & drainage generation, transmission & distribution of electrical energy. History In 1942, during the course of World War II, a flood occurred in the Damodar valley region that cut Calcutta off from the rest of the country for a period of 10 weeks. Soon the government sprang into action & called Mr. W.L.Voord, a civil engineer of Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). He designed the plan of the dams by 1945. Finally the first dam of independent India came up on July 7, 1953 at Tilaiya. Soon Konar, Maithon & Panchet Dam followed in its footsteps in 1955, 1957 and 1959 respectively. Great Historical Construction Of Jharkhand 👍👍🏻👍🏻

Beautiful place for a day tour. Visited here from Andal. It was a weekday so not much rush was there. No good restaurants are available here. For having lunch we have to travel almost 10-15 Km inside Jharkhand.

Maithon Dam is situated across the Barakar river in Dhanbad district in the Indian state of jharkhand. Maithon is the place that reflects the combination of natural beauty and technology. Barakar is the main tributary of the Damodar river that joins the Damodar near Asansol of West Bengal. It has become one of the popular tourist attractions in this area. It was basically designed for preventing flood, hydropower generation, water supply for industrial and domestic purposes and irrigation. Maithon is a beautiful dam surrounded by small hills. The reservoir has become a breath-taking popular picnic spot. This beautiful inexpressible scenario attracts thousands of tourists and photographers where people with their family and friends visit for picnic and enjoying peaceful nature view. If you want to make a plan to visit here, winter season from October to March would be a good choice to visit with pleasant and cool weather. Maithon Dam is also famous for its unique kind underground power generating station in the whole of Southeast Asia. The biggest dam of DVC with blue water and greenery. If you want to see the actual view of the dam, visit the lake in the evening. You will go speechless by seeing the spellbound view of the lake. There are different types of boats are available such as speedboats, paddle boats and country boats. There are many hotels and guest house close to dam to stay. There are few stalls for snacks but food options are limited. _______________________________ There are few places nearby the dam where you can visit such as - 👉 Kalyaneshwari Temple : - It is one of the most visited and oldest temples in the Dhanbad district. It is dedicated to Goddess Kalyaneshwari and hence, it is visited by several childless women who come here with their prayers of getting a child. 👉 Spoon Island Or Sabuj Deep : - This island gets its name from its shape. It is an inverted spoon in the middle of the Maithon Lake. You can easily go there through a boat. You should go there with a group as well as a guide. This is because the green island is actually a forest full of wild animals. 👉 Deer Park : - Surrounded by the dam and its streams, Deer Park is one of the most sought out places near Maithon Dam. Tourists can witness 50, if not more, Deers in the area from the top of the Dam. Keep in mind that photography is prohibited here. ------------------------------------ ----------------------- *** How To Reach ? *** ,🛣️ By Road : 250 Km from Kolkata. Take Durgapur expressway till Asansol, drive straight to Salanpur After crossing Salanpur take left turn to Kalyanshwari Road and drive till Maithon to reach west Bengal end. 🚉 By Train : Nearest railway station to Maithon Dam is Kumardubi Railway Station at a distance of 9Kms. There are frequent Express and Passenger trains to this station. First you will have to come to the Asansol by train thereafter catch another train for Kumardubi. 🛫 By Air : Dhanbad does not have an airport of its own. You can reach Dhanbad from Kolkata Airport or Ranchi Airport By train. The nearest airport to Maithon Dam is Ranchi airport. From here, take a cab to reach Maithon Dam.

One of the most beautiful dams of Bengal - Jharkhand! Especially magical experience if visited early morning. Well maintained pristine waters with some hills situated in the Dam adding to the beauty. Good road connectivity to the Dam. Panchet Dam can also be visited from here, just 40-45 min from here on Bike. Here's a pic when I visited Maithon at 5 AM on a monsoon morning...

We went boating into the dam and enjoyed each and every moment. You can see the natural beauty everywhere. You can see lots of birds and colourful boats. Will love ro go there once again if time permits.

A must-visit place to rewind, rejuvenate and calm your mind. Maithon has resumed it's speed-boat and standard boating services again, both of which promise complete fun. However, consuming any food items from the street side stalls like noodles, chaat, etc is a very big no-no, because they hardly sell and you can very much expect them to be stale and rotten. Best time to visit: (Mid November to January) During the sunset. The place promises some excellent postcard-pretty snaps.

Only private vehicles are allowed to cross the state border. Commercial vehicles need to take E-pass for entering the bridge. Or else you will stopped at the check post. You can get into the dam bridge by walking. Majumder nibas is the best option to stay. Other hotels are also available for night stay.

Best dam I have ever seen. The blue water and small green islands in between will give a pleasing perceptual experience to your senses. We arrived there at about 4 pm. The sun was about to set. Chords of soft light speared down from above, bathing its surface in gold. The best thing here is boating. There is speed boat available as well. But if you want to experience the beauty of the nature and each and every wave, then ride a man powered boat (without motor). The waves are so strong and high even when the dam has stopped the river water. There are two islands where you can go. The water is crystal clear here.

Maithon Dam is the most famous picnic cum tourist spot. It is 26 KM from Asansol and 45 KM from Dhanbad city. River and hills all together creating a marvelous view. You can enjoy boat riding here. The boating is a little expensive, but you will enjoy the most. A beautiful experience to visit some of the island like Spoon Island, Green Island etc. The Dam is in Jharkhand, but the reservoir is 50% in Jharkhand and 50% in West Bengal. There is a proper organized picnic place build with all facility near the Dam.

This place is quite underrated, the best thing about it here is that you can hire a boat and take it to small islands of the watery side of the dam. During good weather, boating feels really nice and rejuvenating. If you are near Dhanbad or Asansol, give it a try as it is near those places.

This is a water reservoir and dam situated on the river Barakar at Burdwan district making West Bengal and Jharkhand border prominent by its water. The entire area looks magnificent and serene specially in the dusk and dawn. The dam and the road bridge are maintained by the CISF and the adjacent road closes by 10:30 pm. The area has separate view points like boating centre, picnic area, dam area and bridge. Boating on the river in the dusk time is an unforgettable experience. The boats lead the travellers to an island called Sabuj dwip. The area has a hilly flavour with irregular forests. The water looks green and has an extremely soothing outlook, one can spend quality time just by sitting by the water body. There is a guest house which is like an island into the water called 'Majumdar Niwas' which is allowed for only DVC employees. They have a nice bridge across the water. There are few stalls for snacks and few hotels and guest houses. It is a must visit place for the travellers.

Maithon Dam is the most important tourist place in the Asansol area. It is situated on West Bengal- Jharkhand Border over the Barakar River. This dam was developed by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC Ltd) way back in the year 1948 Geographically it is situated in Jharkhand. If you Riding or Driving should have valid documents for vehicles to cross the Dam to visit the other side. There are a few activities like Boating. There is an Island too. The idle time to visit the dam is in the evening. It feels like the sun gently descended below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow upon the tranquil waters, It's captivated by the breathtaking beauty of the dam with its island. Nestled in the heart of nature, this picturesque location held a sense of serenity. The dam, standing tall and majestic, provided a perfect vantage point to witness nature's grand spectacle. The shimmering waters mirrored the changing hues of the sky. Sunrise from Maithon Dam is also recommended. Before visiting Maithon Dam and if you have time then you should visit Maa Kalyaneshwary Temple. If you don't have a personal vehicle you can take a Bus from Asansol Bus Stand to visit this Mesmerizing place.

The Dam is Independent India's first Dam Project(one of Nehru's dreams). Maithon also known as 'Kashmir of Koyalanchal' because of its location in the coal belt of india on the Barakar river is a very famous picnic and weekend destination. The Dam is the Biggest dam of damodar valley corporation and was built for flood control and power generation. It was founded by India's first prime minister Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru. Maithon got its name from Mai-ka-sthan or maayer sthan which literally means mothers abode as there is an ancient kalyaneshwari temple here which was built by the king of Barakar in 16th century.

The beauty of Maithon Dam drove us crazy. We went very early in the morning which allowed us to get down to the Maithon dam where the water passes and take some pictures, great pictures. The water rising up the rocks below the dam is beautiful. We sneaked down from the forbidden place. From above the dam to go towards Jharkhand the road goes down to the fast left where there is a park we went from there. The park was closed early in the morning. There are many eateries there. The shops were barely open when we were returning.

There are a number of things to do at Maithon Dam, including boating, hiking, and picnicking. The dam also has a number of temples and historical sites, including the Kalyaneshwari Temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Durga. The best time to visit Maithon Dam is during the winter months, when the weather is mild and the dam is at its fullest. However, the dam is also a beautiful place to visit during the monsoon season, when the surrounding hills are lush and green. Here are some pros and cons of visiting Maithon Dam: Pros: Stunning scenery Variety of activities to choose from Good place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life Relatively affordable Cons: Can be crowded during peak season Not much in the way of accommodation or dining options Some of the roads leading to the dam are in poor condition Overall, Maithon Dam is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. It is a great option for those looking for a weekend getaway or a day trip from Kolkata. Here are some tips for visiting Maithon Dam: Visit during the winter months (November-February) for the best weather. Pack comfortable shoes for hiking and exploring the surrounding area. Bring a picnic lunch if you plan on spending the day at the dam. Be sure to check the dam's website for updated information on opening hours and activities.

Here's main Parks are all day closed except winter season... So, basically good place to visit... except boating I'm not happy with other all... Thanks have a safe journey👍👍
