Best Time to VisitThe annual 16-day Mahostavam (Thiruvizha) festival celebrated in July attracts thousands of pilgrims who come to perform rituals at the Nagapooshani Amman Temple. Worldwide Hindu festivals, such as Navrati (end of September - October) and Shivrati (end of February - beginning of March), also attract many devotees and visitors from within the country and from across the sea. 15 priests perform rituals in the temple on a daily basis and for specific festive occasions. There are 6 pooja (rituals) held every day: sacred bath, decoration, food offering, and waving of lamps, all accompanied by musical instruments, around the giant mandala (circular pattern) in the center of the temple.

The Nagapooshani Amman Kovil is situated on the islet of Nainativu and is a boat ride away from the Jaffna peninsula. Dedicated to Nagapooshani Amman, an avatar of Durga, it is said that this temple has great divine power. The Kovil has four magnificent gopurams, the Raja raja Gopuram, rising to a height of 108 feet, East Gopuram, South East Gopuram and South Gopuram. Many devotees visit the Kovil, especially during the Mahostavam thiruvilla, which is celebrated during June and July. It is said that the statue of Goddess Nagapoosani with lingam and the ten headed Ravana at the bottom is special to the kovil and is not to be found elsewhere. The Nagadeepa Buddhist temple is just a short distance away.

Colourful Temple! – But no phohography please!! Seventeen of us touring Jaffna as a group, visited Naga Pooshani Ambal Kovil on 8th July 2019. Goddess “Naga Pooshani” or “Paththini” is the patron goddess of this kovil. This temple is quite close to the Nagadeepa Buddhist temple. Almost all devotees who visit the Buddhist temple also visit this kovil as Buddhism and Hinuduism are closely linked in the minds of most Buddhists. The temple is large and colourfully decorated. Both Hindu and Buddhist devotees arrive here and pay their respects seeking divine intervention and assistance. Blessings of the goddess “Naga Pooshani” are sought by couples as well as pregnant ladies seeking her assistance and blessings to have healthy babies. Parents bring their new-born babies here to be blessed. Inside the temple, are tiny cots hung by such devotees to symbolize their faith. The main Gopuram tower soars to a height of over 30 metres with sculpted and painted figures filling all four sides. This tower can be seen from far out in the sea. Being a place of worship, visitors are required to dress modestly and behave with decorum. No footwear permitted within the premises. There are designated places to leave your footwear. Photography too is not permitted within though I was permitted to take a few photos after appealing to an authority. The return journey from the temple was in a crowded boat that carried about 60 people back to the mainland KKD jetty.

The Nainativu Nagapooshani Amman Temple is a revered Hindu temple situated on the island of Nainativu in Sri Lanka, nestled amidst the Palk Strait. With a rich history and ancient roots, it is dedicated to Parvati, also known as Nagapooshani or Bhuvaneswari, and her consort Shiva, referred to as Nayinaar in this sacred site. The temple's prominence can be attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, a 9th-century Hindu philosopher, who recognized it as one of the renowned 64 Shakti Peethams in the Shakti Peetha Stotram, as well as its mention in the Brahmanda Purana. The temple complex features four gopurams, which are towering gateway towers. These gopurams range in height from 20 to 25 feet, with the eastern Raja Raja Gopuram standing as the tallest, soaring at an impressive 108 feet. The temple holds great significance for the Tamil people and has been mentioned in ancient Tamil literature, such as Manimekalai and Kundalakesi. The current structure of the temple dates back to the period between 1720 and 1790 when it was reconstructed after the Portuguese had destroyed the original ancient structure in 1620. The temple garners a considerable number of visitors, with approximately 1,000 individuals visiting daily and around 5,000 attendees during festivals. One of the most celebrated events is the annual 16-day Mahostavam (Thiruvizha) festival, which takes place during the Tamil month of Aani (June/July). This grand festival attracts over 100,000 pilgrims who come to partake in the festivities. As part of its recent renovation, the temple boasts an estimated 10,000 sculptures, adding to its artistic and historical splendor. The Nainativu Nagapooshani Amman Temple stands as a testament to the enduring spiritual and cultural heritage of the region, attracting devotees and visitors alike to its sacred grounds.

A very interesting site on a remote island of the north coast of Sri Lanka. Sitting just an hours drive and short boat ride from Jaffna, you come across the enormous Hindu Temple right in front of the boat docking spot. Truly unique experience and a fantastic site to visit. But yet again, as many other sites across Jaffna, the amount of rubbish in and around the temple is quite disappointing.

ℹ️ A really amazing experience to come and visit this sacred and holy island! I came with a friend and we both really enjoyed, go to the Kurikadduwan port. It is a stunning drive where you can witness the raw beauty of Jaffna. The first boat leaves at 8am and they run every 20 minutes. I believe the price is 200rs (one way). (23/08/23) 🐍 Is it known as Nagadeepa in Sinhala and Nainativu in Tamil. The name can represent 'naga/snake people' as an indigenous tribe used to inhibit the island, they lived in the North of Sri Lanka and the South of India, it is said they were mythical humans who could take the form and shape of snakes. 🔥 This temple is known as a Shakti Pitha. Lord Shivas wife (Sati) gave her life to a sacrificial fire after her father disapproved of her and Shiva's relationship. When Lord Shiva found out, his third eye opened with anger/upset and did a dance with her dead body, this is known as tandava, a dance of destruction. Lord Vishnu (god of preservation) came to save the world by restoring balance to Shiva. To do this he used the Sudarshana Chakra, a discus tool/weapon, to cut the body of Sita into 51 pieces and they fell around earth. The Shakti Pitha's are temples/holy places that represent the body parts of Sita. I believe it is the anklets of Sita that represent this particular temple. 🕉️ A very important pilgrimage site for Hindus. You can enjoy food with the locals near the temple too, it is free and a truly amazing experience that I am very grateful for :) Be sure to check what times the temple is open with your host or ask locals. It was closed when we visited but still worth visiting :) ❤️🙏

It's a cool place to have a divine experience in a small island. It's a short travel from jaffna, you have to take a bus (45 mins travel) to reach the ferry and you'll reach naina-theevu in 15mins travel through boat (ferry). There is a Hindu temple and also a Buddha temple in the parallel road. Don't forget to carry a cap and a water bottle. Try parathas opposite to the Hindu temple, it tasted good along with a cup of milk tea. Travel light and enjoy :)

Amazing place to visit. You will see multicultural and religious places next to each other. In a small island only by walking you will see Sri Lanka with different architecture and different cultures and different beliefs. The entrance is extensively decorated with paintings, sculptures and oil lamps. Welcoming structure is a 10 feet high tower. If you using public transport take any local bus heading to nainativu from Jaffna, and then take a short ferry to Nainativu Island.

A long standing temple in the northern part of Sri Lanka. A lot of Hindus and people from other community gather from all over the island for special occasions. The trip to the temple always includes a small yacht travel, which is half-hour long. The travel itself can be exhausting sometimes due to the sheer amount of people turning up to the temple. There is one yacht which is available for private hire which can seat upto 10 people. This yacht service cost more than the other common yacht which interms cost 40 LKR per person. This temple has even become a tourist attraction place. There are several businesses which are thriving due to this. The trip to the temple is always worth even if it drains you of all energy. Schedule your trip on days other than Friday and special days if you want to have a peaceful travel or at least schedule your trip in early mornings before 6 a.m.
