Ancient Fort built by the Dutch to protect their interests in Jaffna. Have been a very important place both in colonial era and the war period. Currently the fort is in a poor state. Open to the public.

There is something mystical about this place. It's just a few crumbling walls pretty much by the side of the main road but having read about it's history it feels like a step back in time.

Ruins of this fort is situated left side of the main highway to Sangupiddi, from Paranthan. It was said this fort was built by Portuguese to protect land from enemies whoever locals or foreign nations such as Dutches. Presently there were few land marks are retaining, reflecting the ancient architecture which was different from the ancient Sri Lankan pattern.

Very interesting historical monument. Located just next to the main road in poonakari town. Worth a visit.

Not really much to see, aside the 4 walls, but there are the remains of a fortified tower? in the corner. It's right next to the road on the left hand side heading south. Allow maybe 20 minutes. There isn't much like this in this area so take advantage

Pooneryn Fort was built in the north portion of the island first by the Portuguese to protect its possessions in Jaffna, it was expanded by the Dutch till in 1770. It was recorded that this fort was square shaped with two bastions at opposite corners; the rampart on each of the sides was about 30 metres and was garrisoned till the late 1700s. The British built a rest house using the fort in 1805. Since 1983 due to the civil war it was garrisoned by the Sri Lankan Army till it withdrew from the Pooneryn area in 1991; and liberated in 2008. Pooneryn and the fort is accessible to the public after the defeat of the LTTE Terrorists but the uins of the fort is said to remain in bad condition.

Remnants of the first shows something great once stood ground there. Features like Garrisons, Storage and Coral Stones on the walls can be seen. Worth a visit if you are passing nearby

Worth a stop to have a look if you are travelling along this route. The fort  was built by the Portuguese and they used the fort to exert their dominance in Jaffna until the year 1770 to protect their possessions in Jaffna. The fort was the captured by the Dutch in 1770 and subsequently by the British in 1805. During the civil war the LTTE captured this area in 1991. The fort is now severely damaged and only the ruins remain. Would be nice if renovations can be carried out.
