Renovations make this biggest mosque in Southeast Asia better. Many pilgrims come from other cities in Indonesia. Tourists can also visit this place. There is a tourist desk that will guide you. Just watch your clothes (polite dress)

Very cool mosque to come and visit when you are visiting Jakarta. IF YOU ARE A TOURIST LIKE WE ARE, WE RECOMMEND GOING TO THE WOMENS (wanita) ENTRANCE AND THEY WILL DIRECT YOU TO THE TOURIST AREA! You do not need to split up to go into the mosque, which is confusing when you arrive. Once inside the tourist area, you will be guided around the mosque in a group with other tourists for FREE (about 30 min tour). You will have to put on a sarong or one of the robes provided if not wearing clothes that conceal. You will also have to leave your shoes in the tourist office and walk around barefoot or in socks. The tour was very much appreciated, as we do not know much about the Muslim culture or Mosques in general. The inside of the mosque is very large and has a beautiful modern design to it with 5 floors that rise above the main level. The ceiling has an intricate, almost mandala style design surrounded by large columns… it is quite impressive. There are many local families hanging out and resting in the mosque, some praying and some escaping the heat of the day. Overall a great experience and a nice free activity to do during the day. I would recommend coming to check this place out, but be respectful of the culture!

(Translated by Google) The Old Town area is one of the best and most popular tourist attractions in Jakarta among tourists besides Monas and Ancol. Well, maybe for those of you who have never been here will be wondering, actually there is anything in the Old City that makes this place a game hunted by travelers. The main attraction of the Old City lies in the Dutch colonial heritage buildings that are still well preserved. Navigating every corner of the Old City will make you feel as if you are back in the past. Bicycle, ancient windows, tiled buildings with small towers at the end, all reinforce the atmosphere of the past. Taking pictures with the background of ancient buildings to the museum, of course, will look beautiful with a vintage impression. In the morning, afternoon, or evening, the Old City always offers a different beautiful angle. This makes the Old City one of the coolest photo spots in Jakarta, a favorite of young people.

An iconic Islamic building full of historical events and spiritual presence. By far, it is the biggest mosque in Southeast Asia region. The area surrounding the mosque has many historical spots (like the Cathedral and National Monument). Istiqlal Mosque is open for non-Muslim tourists for free, just need to dress properly and respectfully.

It's the largest mosque in South East Asia and in Jakarta.. No entry fees for this. It's location is very prime in central Jakarta and is very close to Monas and Merdeka Square. Just opposite to it is the Jakarta Cathedral.. It's huge in size.. They have big parking facility available but it's crowded most of the time specially in on weekends so keep that in mind. Carry a polythene along to keep your footwears in it else there would be people just outside selling it to them. There is a counter where u can deposit your shoes if you are a local and Muslim. In case your are a tourist from other country, then just right to the counter is an information desk sort where u can enter your details in the register.. Also, you will be required to put your shoes in the guest room and not the usual place. If you are not Muslim, then you will not be allowed to go to first floor of the mosque. You can go on the second floor and click photographs. Make sure you are well dressed and covered when u arrive here (both men and women) else they provide clothes to cover you up. The architecture is world class and good place for praying.. Overall nice place and worth visiting once

Istiqlal is the biggest mosque in southeast Asia. Capacity of this mosque 200.000. even this is for Muslim but the Arsitec was Christian from North Sumatra, Mr.Silaban. This mosque has 5 floors but for pray, only use the main floor. This mosque would be full during Eid Mubarak and Eid Adha. This mosque also open for tourist, no matter what their religion. Tourist that come here would have impression about Islam in Indonesia. For local, they can going direct to main praying room, but for foreign, this mosque has staff that would help and take for tour and give explanation. Since this is national mosque also so this mosque also become place for many Islamic event and Islamic celebration. In the weekend it would be crowded and full. But during Friday, in time of Friday pray, would also be very busy and crowded. This mosque is recommended for visit.

This is the second time I visited the Istiqlal Mosque, my first visit here was when there was no Google account or mobilephones with cameras for almost 20 years ago. Now I visited here in October 27th 2023 specially for Friday prayers. This magnificent mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia, makes me proud to be an Indonesian citizen. An extraordinary mosque design is timeless. Since the renovation was completed, there have been improvements and additional supporting facilities to make this mosque even better. There is a paid locker cupboard to store things and our belonging when we want to enter the area inside the mosque. There are quite a lot of sanitary places available and they are quite clean. The prayer place is on the 2nd floor, up 1 floor from the ablution place. When you enter the main prayer room you can really feel the splendor of this Istiqlal mosque.

Most worth visiting attraction in Jakarta. This place is not only stunning but also very well organized with super friendly staff that are always smile at you. Visiting time for tourist is after 10am. You shall be escorted to waiting room for your guided tour which is every 30 minutes and given proper clothing. The guide speak lovely English, he gave so good introduction about the place and give so much useful information. With 0$ entrance fee i didn't expected to be guided professionally like that. Cats are everywhere in the mosque

Amazingly beautiful architecture inside. Amazing renovation work too. It’s really huge. Enormous capacity, especially during Eid. One of the biggest mosque in SEA i think. We came on saturday night, during magrib prayer. Ablution area rather clean enough. Lots of visitor from outside city. The facility post renovation is well maintained and proper. There is large parking space in the basement. It takes a bit long walk from parking to the mosque.

Istiqlal Mosque or Independence Mosque') in Jakarta, Indonesia is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the sixth largest mosque in the world in terms of worshipper capacity. Built to commemorate Indonesian independence, this national mosque of Indonesia was named "Istiqlal", an Arabic word for "independence". The mosque was opened to the public on 22 February 1978. Within Jakarta, the mosque is positioned next to Merdeka Square and the Jakarta Cathedral and also of the Immanuel Church. The mosque was formerly the location of the Wilhelminapark and a 19th-century Citadel.

The third time I have visited Istiqlal as a foreigner wearing jeans and a collared shirt and closed sole shoes. 1st Visit - Turned away. No reason given. May have been because we were close to covid still. 2nd Visit - Turned away because I said I am not Muslim but would like to take some photographs. 3rd Visit - Turned away at two gates, but finally managed to enter via gate 5 opposite Cathedral. Many locals wandering around inside taking photos and talking. Food vendors are there too. As soon as I entered the grounds a security guard came up and basically demanded "are you Muslim? Cannot go cannot go". He agreed to let me walk around the outside of Istiqlal and take photos. But I was not allowed inside the actual mosque at all. I give it two stars because the building is impressive and it is a great place to see at sunset and to see Indonesian culture. But the treatment from the security guards is confusing. Jakarta has all these great national monuments and buildings...why is it so hard to let a foreigner come and appreciate them? Surely Indonesia wants tourism to rebound after the pandemic, so why is visiting this landmark site so difficult? Especially for those who are visiting from overseas and who are dressed appropriately and are respectful. Perhaps Istiqlal needs some rules and regulations posted online or at entry gates to avoid tourist dissappointment.

The Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta is a stunning architectural marvel and an essential cultural landmark in Indonesia. As one of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia, it can accommodate over 200,000 worshippers. Its grand dome and towering minarets dominate the cityscape. The mosque's construction commenced in 1961 and was inaugurated in 1978, symbolizing Indonesia's newfound independence. Inside, the vast prayer hall boasts a serene ambiance, with a beautiful mihrab at its center. The mosque is known for its inclusivity, welcoming visitors from all backgrounds to admire its beauty and learn about Islam. Its strategic location near Jakarta's other major attractions makes it an easily accessible and enriching experience for tourists and locals alike.

It is a very neat and clean mosque in Jakarta, always crowded but because it is wide space it not going to be full except for big celebration like EID..the parking fee is quite expensive, but it is fine and safe. There is a food corner that you can buy some snacks or dinner. It is also some of souvenir and gift shop for tourist. The abolition place is so wide and clean.

A heritage place of the colonial era that is still awake. The place is very comfortable for a relaxing place with friends or family especially in the afternoon. The place is clean. It feels to have lived in ancient times. Colonial buildings that have the characteristics of ancient Europe. Everything is very good.

Istiqlal is one of the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. I think they have one of the biggest dome too. But nowadays, some part of istiqlal are under maintenance. The cleanliness for the bathroom was so-so. There's a lake in front of the mosque that looked like not in a good condition. I think the government or whom it may concerned should be more concern to this site.

(Translated by Google) Istiqlal Mosque (literal meaning: Merdeka Mosque) is the national mosque of the Republic of Indonesia located in the former Wilhelmina Park, in the Northeast of Medan Merdeka Square, in the center of which stands the National Monument (Monas), in the center of the capital city Jakarta. The high priest is Prof. Dr. Nasaruddin Umar, M.A. and the current chairman of the Istiqlal Mosque Management Executive Board is Laksma (ret) H. Asep Saefuddin. [5] [6] [7] The construction of this mosque was initiated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia at that time, Ir. Soekarno. Laying the first stone as a sign of the start of the construction of the Istiqlal Mosque was carried out by Ir. Soekarno on August 24, 1961. The architect of the Istiqlal Mosque was Frederich Silaban, a Christian. [8] The mosque has a modern architectural style with marble walls and floors, decorated with geometric ornaments of stainless steel. The main building of this mosque consists of five floors and one ground floor. The main building is crowned by a large dome with a diameter of 45 meters which is supported by 12 large pillars. The single tower with a total height of 96.66 meters rises in the south corner of the mosque hallway. This mosque can accommodate more than 200,000 worshipers. On every Islamic holiday such as Ramadan, Idul Fitri, Idul Adha, Hijriyah New Year, the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad and Isra and Mi'raj, the President of the Republic of Indonesia always holds religious activities at this mosque which are broadcast live on national television (TVRI) and partly private television (Original) Masjid Istiqlal (arti harfiah: Masjid Merdeka) adalah masjid nasional negara Republik Indonesia yang terletak di bekas Taman Wilhelmina, di Timur Laut Lapangan Medan Merdeka yang di tengahnya berdiri Monumen Nasional (Monas), di pusat ibukota Jakarta. It is one of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia and the largest in terms of construction and capacity. And he called this work of art "Independence" to start building it after Indonesia's independence from the Netherlands in 1949, when citizens wanted to build a great mosque befitting their reputation as the largest Muslim country in terms of population with a total of 240 million people. In 1954, the design of the mosque was entrusted to Frederick Silapan, a Christian architect from North Sumatra, and the construction process took 17 years under the supervision of Indonesian President Ahmed Soekarno, who opened it to the public on February 22, 1978. The area of the mosque is 2750 square meters, it is 50 meters long, 55 meters wide and 33 meters high, and it accommodates about 200,000 worshipers, making it the largest in Northeast Asia. The outer courtyards of the mosque are surrounded by an artificial lake, a fountain, and commercial markets. The place is full of unusual movement, and non-Muslim visitors gather around it to take memorial photos with the mosque. The mosque has turned into one of the most important religious landmarks that attract tourists of their spectrums in Indonesia, especially as it is located in a very important place in Merdeka Square (or Independence Square), where the Catholic Church faces it on Taman Wijaya Kusuma Street, which is a symbol of tolerance that characterizes the Indonesian. The mosque is distinguished by its simplicity and its great position in the hearts of Indonesian Muslims, and it holds conferences, lectures and religious seminars, and a group of presidents visited, most notably US President Barack Obama and his wife in November 2010, former US President Bill Clinton, Iranian Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Muammar Gaddafi, Prince Charles and Heinz Fischer President of Austria, and finally Angela Merkel in 2012. The biggest most in Jakarta and even in Southeast Asia. Very beautiful after the renovation. Many pilgrims come from other cities in Indonesia. Non-Muslim travelers can also visit this place.

The newly renovated Istiqlal Mosque Complex features new underground parking space for small to medium-sized vehicles. The old parking space is now being used for bazaar and shops. There are still parking spaces on the surface but only for bigger vehicles such as travel vehicle (hiace type) and buses. For those who wants to visit the mosque via personal vehicle, The entrance near the bus stop is now closed permanently, so you have to enter through the front gate (in front of the Cathedral) or near the intersection before the Irian Jaya Liberation Monument. The complex now have more pedestrian spaces to accommodate more people coming to pray or to just taking pictures of the mosque. On the side of the main road (before the bridge to the mosque) there are shoes deposit office for those who wants to pray on the Mosque. The river across the complex is much bigger now although there are still many trash in the area (smelly too). The inside of the Mosque now have an elevator for disabled people (because the praying area is on the upper floor). Washing area has been enlarged in order to accommodate people efficiently. The Mosque has more than enough spaces for you to pray so even when it was crowded. You can still pray with ease and comfortable.

As a tourist, I enjoyed the quick tour they offered here. I didn’t expect to get inside the mosque cuz I wore sleeveless dress that day. However they offered me a robe to cover and walked through main places for tourists. Still feel a bit sorry cuz I didn’t have much cash on hands to tip the “tour guide”, Mr. M. at the end of the tour.

This is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the sixth largest mosque in the world. It was built to commemorate Indonesian independence and was named "Istiqlal", which is Arabic for "independence". The interior design is extremely modern, minimalist, simple and clean-cut, with a minimum of stainless steel geometric ornaments, and full of symbolism. The mosque can accommodate up to 200,000 worshippers. The visitor entrance is to the far right from the main entry doors. Entrance is free, you will be asked to take of your shoes once inside, and clothing will be provided to cover your knees and shoulders if you are not properly dressed. A very bossy guide provides mandatory group tours.

Istiqlal Mosque is a truly magnificent architectural masterpiece. Its grandeur and the sense of history that envelopes you as you step inside are awe-inspiring. The intricate details of the interior design, the spacious courtyard, and the spiritual ambiance make it a must-visit for anyone in Jakarta. However, the biggest letdown during my visit was the service. The staff seemed disinterested and lacked the warmth.

It's a very big and gorgeous mosque. So cozy. But the restroom is not too much. So there is a queue. Maybe because the day i visit is public holiday. It's free, we only pay for the parking fee.

Entry to the mosques spree. A guide is provided taking small groups around the mosque after you sign in and cloak up in burgundy with gold trim, hooded gowns… Very very special. You take your shoes off and two of the mosque. It really is stunning. It’s all marble but the dome itself and the columns in the main prayer area is stainless steel with beautiful red carpets. There are five levels representing the five pillars of Islam. It is the largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the ninth largest in the world. Capacity is 120,000 worshippers really amazing experience. Even waiting outside for the mocks to open which is 10 am we enjoyed coffee with some Street vendors and a swat team. That were there taking a break from the patrols…

The location is what foreigners would wish to visit. It's an old culturally intense place. There are lots of exotic hotels around the area too. I gave a 4-star review because of the street singers. They are not friendly at all. I hope the place could do something about it.

Jakarta's historical building. High door on it surely make my attention. Here you can sit and listen to the street singer while sipping your coffee or just take a picture or buy some 'kerak telor'.

This is really a beautiful place. The Old Town Jakarta is a place that full of history. There is a museum and the building around this place is look very old but interesting to see. Everything here is very interesting. Riding a bicycle here always make me be happy. In holiday there are a lot of tourists who visit this place. Foreign tourists also like visit Kota Tua. I think it is the best place to visit when in Jakarta.

If you want to go there Open everyday and 24 hours but bank Indonesia museum opened Tuesday to Sunday 9 am to 3 pm ,Monday and National holiday it is closed. it is same for Fatahillah Museum . We don't need to pay to enjoy this old City, but if we want to enter the museum , we should pay . If you come by Transjakarta , you can stop in Kota halte . I suggest you to come at 1 p.m to enjoy the museum and in afternoon to enjoy the open field until night. We will find live music and some creative things there. If we feel hungry and thirsty, we can have food and drinks at Cafe arround this old City. There's Batavia Cafe that is very famous.

We visited this largest mosque in S/E Asia. It’s difficult to find the entrance with all the construction around the mosque, but there does seem to be at least two. We entered on the southwest side. There is a tourist desk that will hold your shoes and issue you a sarong for a small fee. The mosque is large with people praying on the carpet under the massive dome. There were school kids learning to pray, while others inside just seemed to be inside under the large fans and out of the heat if the day. The exterior hall/walkways you will find people just relaxing, sleeping, eating, just keeping cool and meeting and hanging out with friends , Gigantic mosque in Jakarta, one of the biggest in the world. I believed it's one of the 5 largest mosques in the world. The architecture is unique, industrial style while many other mosque i have visited has middle east style of mosque

Unfortunately the mosque is under renovation now and made the visit unpleasant. However we me a volunteer tried his every effort to explain to us about Muslim religion and explained the significance of the mosque. It was a 3rd largest mosque in the world and largest in Asia! It is a huge mosque and very different from the mosque I have visited. I am happy they allowed foreigners to visit and do make sure you wear modestly! Free entrance and don’t worry of the locals tried to sell you a plastic bag to carry your shoes. You would be usher to a guest room to place your shoes..

Very clean, modern mosque. Facilities are good, staff great too. I personally wasn't a huge fan of the architectural style, it's modernist with metal and stone forming the interior, but the mosque is vast and attention to detail can still be appreciated. It has five levels, the main prayer space on second floor, accommodating 100000 people at its peak we were told. The outside courtyards can add another 100000, making this the biggest mosque in Southeast Asia. Tourists are allowed to visit and there's a tour that was pretty cheap (around 1 dollar I think) starting from the inside.

We have entered the Istiqlal Mosque through the Al Fattah or main gate.We were greeted by the  ever smiling faced young Imam of the mosque. He is such a knowledgeable person and with his smile and attitude instantly owned our heart. We came to know from him that Indonesia is primarily a Sunni Muslim country. Istiqlal Mosque is very famous in contemporary world history and President Barack Obama along with his wife, President Bill Clinton, German Chancellor Anjela Narkel and numerous world dignitaries came here in yesteryear, but he is very happy to meet some Indians. This grand structure is the largest mosque in South East Asia and 9th biggest mosque in the world and built to commemorate Indonesian Independence. It has a capacity for 200,000 worshippers. Architecture of this beautiful mosque was Friedreich Silaban. The rectangular main prayer hall building is covered by a 45-m diameter central spherical dome; the number "45" symbolizes the 1945 Proclamation of independence. The dome is supported by twelve big  round columns or pillars . 12 probably indicate prophet's birthday month of Rabi' al-awwal. We are seeing 5 floors inside the mosque which as per explanation of Imam symbolizes 5 time Azan or prayers. He also said the central dome of the mosque is 8 meters in diameter . Here 8 means 8th or August month, the month of Indonesian Independence.
