The museum building occupies the site of a church which was built in 1640, under the name of the Old Dutch Church. In 1732, the church was renovated and the name was changed into the New Dutch Church (Dutch: De Nieuwe Hollandsche Kerk). In 1808, an earthquake destroyed the church. Later in 1912, a building was constructed in the Neo-Renaissance style on the site, which initially functioned as a warehouse belonging to Geo Wehry & Co. In 1938, the building was renovated, following Dutch colonial architecture. The garden of the Wayang Museum, located on the former yard of the Dutch church, was the funeral site of General Governor Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Later, the building was bought by the Batavia Society of Arts and Sciences, an institution dealing with Indonesian culture and science. The institution then transferred this building to the Old Batavia Foundation and on December 22, 1939, it was made a museum under the name of Old Batavia Museum. In 1957, after the independence of Indonesia, the building was transferred to the Institute of Indonesian Culture and on September 17, 1962, to the Ministry of Education and Culture. On June 23, 1968, the DKI Jakarta Administration made the building into the Wayang Museum; the inauguration took place on August 13, 1975.

Interesting to see the puppets from all over the world. We booked a private tour and a visit with the puppet master. The kids got to see what it takes to make puppets, a very complex and difficult process. We had a private puppet show. It was very enjoyable and adapted to us. At the end we purchased some beautiful masks and some puppets. This was a highlight of our trip to Jakarta and I highly recommend it.

(Translated by Google) Educational place for those who like puppets. The puppet collection is very complete, ranging from local to international. And the museum is also quite large and spacious. Besides the puppet collection there is also a collection of traditional musical instruments. There is also a souvenir shop. At certain times, you can watch the puppet show with a different theme every day. (Original) Tempat edukasi buat yang suka dengan wayang. Even though the entrance fee is only 10.000 IDR (70 cents), a foreigner doesn’t get much of the static display of puppets. At least they should perform a puppet show.

Situated in the old town, in a rather run down colonial building, this fascinating museum is well with a visit if you are interested in Indonesian culture and it's famous puppetry. How tragic that it is stuffed in a museum! The figures and puppets are so rich in the stories that they would like to tell, and what a treat it would be if children and adults today would be able to see and hear then again. But that impulse awaits someone who would like to bring it back to life. Highly recommended, so long as your imagination is alive.

Museum wayang this a part of the Old town Jakarta area. If you visit old town area, you can go to visit this museum of wayang Indonesia. This place clean and have air conditioning. For the ticket entrance for adult its 5.000 IDR single entry (I visit on the week day, I'm not sure if the price could be same or not on the weekend)

The Wayang Museum, located in the bustling city of Jakarta, stands as a remarkable testament to the rich cultural heritage of Java puppetry. As you enter this enchanting museum, prepare yourself to embark on a captivating journey into the magical world of traditional Indonesian storytelling. The museum proudly displays a vast collection of intricately crafted wayang puppets and dolls, each with its own unique charm and character. From the elegant leather puppets from the shadow puppetry tradition (wayang kulit) to the colorful wooden puppets of the rod puppetry tradition (wayang golek), visitors are treated to a visual feast that showcases the craftsmanship and artistry of the Java puppet makers.

Pros: Surprisingly broad variety of wayang (puppet) not just from across Indonesia but also from around the world. Good learning experience for new understanding of Wayang not just to entertain but also as a means to convey values of morality, religion, even as political tool. Great historical building once serve as a church during dutch occupation. IDR 5000 very well spent. Much better than anticipated. Cons/suggestion: more info/explanation of each display in english, lighting set a bit dim for visitors to take good pictures

I didn't have plans to stop into the puppet museum, but I saw it and was intrugued! It was 5000 idr and totally worth it (even if you're just looking to get out of the sun). The puppets, instruments, and masks were all beautiful! There were not too many signs in English, but you don't really need it to admire the art and craftsmanship. The staff was very nice and helpful too! There's also a cute little gift shop at the end with reasonable prices.

(Translated by Google) The Wayang Museum was inaugurated by the Governor of Jakarta, Mr. Ali Sadikin on August 13, 1975. Where the museum area experienced several location changes, previously located on the east side of the Jakarta History Museum (Fatahillah Museum) to the west side. although the puppet museum occupies an old building that is hundreds of years old, the interior display of the museum has undergone a lot of modernization to ward off some gloomy impressions in society and especially to attract more visitors to come to this wayang museum. From time to time the Wayang Museum is seen expanding into the building next to it. you can see the building with a modern design. This building is also equipped with an elevator to make it easier for disabled people or elderly people to mobilize inside the building. The Wayang Collection in the History of the Jakarta Wayang Museum consists of several Wayang Kulit, Wayang Golek, masks, glass puppets, zinc puppets, paintings and dolls from foreign countries such as India, China, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Thailand, Suriname, Vietnam, and Cambodia. besides that, there is also a collection of traditional musical instruments such as gamelan. Until now, the puppet museum has a collection of more than 5,000 puppets.

This museum very unique and very special for puppet. In Indonesia we have wooden puppet, leather puppet (shadow puppet) and also human puppet. But on this museum we can see alot of collections of wooden puppet and also shadow puppet. In the middle of this museum building there is also the grave yard of Dutch governor general since this museum used to be Church during Dutch colonial. This museum has 2 floors. First is for wooden puppet collections and second floor is for leather puppet and puppet collections from all over the world. Every Sunday this museum has special performance of puppet show. And there is also souvenir shop that sells puppet.

I think the only one puppet show museum in Indonesia. Located in Kota Tua Jakarta, North Jakarta. Easy to find and access. Cheap price. Many kind of puppet displayed. With good arrangement and lighting, I looks interesting. Also display puppet from around the world. Quite big museum, 2 floor and everything can be accessed by wheelchair with more effort. Also there is a show every specific time.

A lot of puppet collection here, from traditional to international. I hope that there is an education movie or animasi about wayang, both in Indonesian and English, so that the visitors interest more about wayang after visiting this museum. There’s toilet inside and you can buy the tickets when you come. I visited on weekdays so not so many visitors there. Since I visited my two of my foreigners friends, it’s difficult for me to explain the means of wayang itself.

This museum is quiet unique. It shows many wayang / puppet and dolls from Indonesia & other country such as Vietnam, China, Rusia & others. There are many types of puppets that different upon regions such as Sunda, middle Java,& other regions. Every weekend there were puppet show with different stories that held in Javanese language. It really shows Indonesian heritage conplete with gamelan and "nyinden", even though mostly I don't understand due to language barrier. Many domestic & international tourist comes to this place to enjoy the show. What I dislike about this place is it's a bit dusty. However if you're looking for a CHEAP entertainment or wonder where to bring your kids for leasure & education this is the place for you. The contribution fee is only IDR 5.000 or about USD 0.37 per person with special price for group trip and students. And every now and then there are museum staffs who willing to explain the story behibd the dolls or offering to take your picture. #LetsGuide

Definitely One Of My Favourite Museums. The Museum Showcases Indonesian Traditional Puppets Called "Wayang". It Shows Various Wayang Around Indonesia And Other Countries. There Are Hundreds, Maybe Thousands Of Them In The Museum. It Has A Canteen, A Performance Room, Toilets. The Air Conditioning Isn't Very Good And It Might Be A Bit Uncomfortable If You Don't Like Narrow Rooms.

Museum Wayang is one of the three Art Museums in Kota Tua. It's been revitalized and far more comfort to be visited than before. It mainly exhibits wayang golek from West Java and wayang kulit from many parts of area (Cirebon, Purwakarta, Surakarta Bali, even Palembang). Some others are from other countries. Fee entrance is only 5K rupiah for adults and 2K rupiah for children. Wayang show usually plays every Sunday except Des-Feb (off). No additional fee for watching the show. ❤💕

Wayang is a traditional puppet theatre show. Wayang translates to shadow and it tells a dramatic story by moving the shadows of the puppets. This show is famous in Indonesia and also some Asian countries due to the spread of Hinduism. Quite a selection of old and historical Wayang here. I like the old vibe of the building from outside but unfortunately the place is dark and well dusty. We didnt stay that long because inside is also hot during mid-day! It was great to see the Wayangs and how they must preserve this part of the culture!

I heard good thing about this place but I was a bit disappointed with what inside. It was under reconstruction but the displays were not placed in such ways that would intrigued people's interest. May be the decoration, the interior design, I am not sure which one. But Wayang Museum was the least interesting place that we visited that day. (we visited Museum Indonesia and also Museum Seni Rupa)

Loved the tranquil old colonial building amidst the bustle of modern Jakarta. Aside from the puppets the building and some of its memorials also offer a glimpse into Dutch Batavia. The puppets are amazing and many tell stories from the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. I went early in the morning and was the first, and only visitor the entire time. Must see.

They have a great collections but need bit more extra treatment because the room is a little stuffy. Also need more descriptions notes on each collection. And perhaps they could do a little improvement for the notes written in English.

Easily the best museum I have ever been to. The history speaks for itself, unremarkable. This place has so much puppets that it's unreal. There are tons of puppets, dolls, instrument and even stages. Totally recommended.

A must visit museum for locals and tourists. Located in Kota Tua Jakarta, so in walking distance you can get the ambience of Old Batavia & to Museum Fatahillah too! 🤩

  • 3/5 Arjun N. 1 year ago on Google
It’s a interesting museum but most exhibits don’t have a description in English. I would have loved to learn more about this very important aspect of Indonesian culture.

In this museum, you can expand your knowledge about wayang as well as foreign pupets and traditional music instrument with your friends. Apart from that, we did various fun activities there, such as: Walking around and explore the wayangs and more that were on display in this museum. We had so much fun coming there and even took pictures of our moments in the museum. Right after finishing our small tour at the Wayang Museum, we decided to buy some souvenirs to commemorate. Despite it's low admission price, the museum's facilities are equally well maintained. From the toilet to the collection in this museum. This museum is highly recommended to gain more knowledge about the history of Wayang and more.

Great place museum. A lot of wayang, that's give out knowledge for us. There's also another wayang or puppet from the other country

My family and I recently visited the Wayang Museum in Jakarta, and we had a great time! The museum is home to a large collection of wayang puppets, which are traditional Indonesian shadow puppets. The puppets are made from a variety of materials, including wood, leather, and cloth. They are used to tell stories from Hindu and Buddhist mythology, as well as from Indonesian history.

Very old and tired "museum", minimal information on exhibits but very cheap entrance fee. Located in a renovated old colonial house and within alun-alun perimeter. Walking distance from Museum Bank Indonesia, Museum Bank Mandiri and Museum Sejarah Jakarta.

Not a big museum compared to some museums in Kota Tua area. It has wide variants of Wayang. You could find some cute dolls to horrifying horror dolls over there. It has quite cool temperature and the design inside is quite good as well. The toilet is also looks great and clean
