I have loved visiting Fort Monroe over the years. We have watched it evolve from an Active Army base to the beautiful civilian destination it is now. You must visit the new Welcome Center. Their are wonderful resources to make the most of your visit. There's a Museum located inside the moat, don't miss it! And, of course, beautiful beaches!

Beautiful place to rest, relax and enjoy a variety of things. People come here from everywhere to…sit and read a good book, fish, boat, jet ski, swim, tan, bird watch, dolphin watch (you never really know when they’ll come in). For tours about the rich history, photo shoots & weddings. To exercise run or walk (dog on a leash friendly). Just to look out over the ocean. Nice for family gatherings (pack lunches). It can be a place for nice romantic outing. Adjacent to the HRBT (US64) You can see the vehicles disappear into the under water tunnel. Located not too far from downtown Hampton which also offers something for everyone (foods/drinks & shopping). Outside of winter I like to go in early morning, when it’s nice a breeze and much more peaceful.

A very picturesque waterfront park with beach access and fishing piers into the Atlantic Ocean. Good for a nice scenic walk of the old civil war fortifications.

Outlook beach was a good attraction. The campus has so many historical buildings used by army at one point. One house had a note that President Lincoln visited stayed there. Such narrow underpasses to go through to see the beach. So many residential buildings too!! I thought it was a historical site only. I didn't see an actual fort but again it is a big campus and I stopped looking after I got to the beach. May be I missed it. There was a food truck in the lot of the beach. Cops were present all the time and crowd was pretty friendly.

Such amazing people in Hampton! Friendly and helpful. I received so many compliments are interest while setting up a luxury picnic on the beach. Parking was great, unloading was good, and the life guards were friendly. Plenty of security with the authorities close by. Family friendly beach, small and intimate.

Fort Monroe is a true gem here in the state of Virginia. The history is beyond compare, Locations where Lincoln stayed, The location where Jefferson was incarcerated, Also where speeches of the past were given. You can walk the entire fort and still not see it all. It's fun to walk on the top of the mote, just be aware of the edge. There is a outstanding view of the ocean where it your lucky, you can catch some pretty cool ships going by. A must see and its free!

The kids and myself, had lots of fun. We walked around taking silly videos and pics, I’m pretty sure people lived in the small town with in the Fort. We saw a few tours going on but we jus walked around looking at the amazing views. Just seeing all the older buildings was pretty neat i highly recommend going, oh and it’s free to get in.

This is definitely a cool spot to visit! We love exploring the old forts along the eastern coast. Fort Monroe is massive and has so much history! You can tour the museum first and then explore around the fort grounds. There's a handy map you can use to take a self guided tour. The museum will take you inside the fort that has cannons and other interesting things to read about and see. It was a little confusing at first figuring out where to go. You need to reserve a time to go inside the museum at the information center, but the ticket is free! The whole thing is free, which is awesome.

Fort Monroe is where I go for a nice stroll on the beach and boardwalk running along the Cheaspeake bay. It's a beautiful place to watch boats and ships coming and leaving the Hampton, Norfolk and Portsmouth area ports. It's where I can quietly sit and read a book or watch dolphins playing and feeding along the shoreline. If you enjoy fishing, there are two piers extending into the bay. There is an RV park for those wishing to stay awhile but reservations are required. And foe these who enjoy history, there is so much to see and visit at the museum. Thus place is a jewel and I am so happy it's open to the public.

I always enjoy coming here. There's something really special and removed about this spot, even in the middle of Fort Monroe. I've come back every season to think.

Very impressive fort with a good visitor center and walking tour. It was interesting to learn the history of the fort and area. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommend a visit. We were there over an hour and did not hit the extra museum.

Beautiful place rich in history and picture worthy sites. We had a brief walk around towards the end of the day and saw a bunch of interesting locations. Beach was busy with families swimming and the piers had people fishing. I plan on returning to explore more into this treasure on the Chesapeake. Looks nice for riding a bike!

Wonderful park to visit as a family! Make sure to get tickets to the casemate museum ahead of time from the visitor center. You need a timed entry ticket for the museum. It is definitely worth the time to see it and the walking tour is great! We were also able to do the tour while driving because there were enough areas where you could pull off. The pet I cemetery was one of the favorites of our children.

This place is amazing! I got to go inside the fort, see the ocean from the top, there was an aircraft carrier in the distance, and got to learn all about what made this place special. The museum is open if you get a ticket from the education center. Careful though because the ticket / gift shop is NOT in the fort. I made that mistake haha

If you love history then this place is for you. Fort Monroe is the largest fort built in the US. Take a walk through history at Fort Monroe. Entry is FREE. Casemate museum is located within the Fort's walls. I also visited Old point Comfort Lighthouse. There is a nice boardwalk at the periphery of the fort.

So much fun! Go visit Freedoms Fortress! Fort Monroe is a stone structure fort and is accessible through the loan gates. The Casement Museum was closed (due to MLK Day), but the rest of the fort was great. There is a walking tour, be prepared to walk everywhere on the fort and the walking trail continues outside. Visit the Old Comfort Lighthouse and the designated plaques of the fort Africans to America. There are designated parking spaces and Fort Monroe is free!

Now that this historical military base has been turned over to the city of Hampton everyone can enjoy it. The views and the landscapes are so nice. You can stroll and enjoy the water on one side the homes and other sites on the other. Some of the structures fron the 18th century are still intact. Enjoy the cannons!

Absolutely gorgeous place, and saturated in history. There is so much to explore and learn just by walking around Fort Monroe. This sort of thing is what America is all about. Come enjoy the beauteous monument and learn about the history of strife that has become a monument to American unity. May Freedom's Fortress stand for all time, and may the people learn to live in harmony, in accordance with the founding principles of this country.

Interesting site. We check it out thinking it will have an awesome view and it will be still on the reminesence of what it used to be. But there's private residences and traffic lights inside!. We couldn't access to the museum as it was closed. But I understand the tickets are free.

I was in the Army here before It became a national monument. Makes me feel a bit old. Used to drive a big box truck through the tiny tunnel. It's a really neat fort. Edgar Allen Poe was there too.

It was a great time driving around the Fort. I would recommend just exploring on your own. The visitor center was also very nice, that has a nice open rooftop to look over the fort. I would also recommend early spring for a visit. Less crowded and nice weather.

I have visited quite a few National Monument Forts and this is the most impressive in my opinion. Museum was very well done. Grounds are well maintained and there are a lot of plaques and a walking tour.

Called the "Freedom's Fortress" this is a huge fort with incredible engineering so stoutly built. This place is so diverse in history tracing its roots all the way back to 1600s. its unfortunate we picked a day when the casemate museum was closed. Great view of Chesapeake bay atop the ramparts. it's nice driving through the streets within the fort. would love to be back and take the walking tour. Admission is free.

This is a hidden gem that much of the public isn't aware of. A nice pleasant drive through history with beach, sand and unusually clear waters. Picnic pavilions available for rsvp. Use to be a favorite for July 4th celebrations, hopefully that will rekindle!

Such a cool nostalgic place to visit and I would highly recommend taking the time to drive through and maybe hang around a little while at the coffee shop or the beach. Going over the mote and through the tunnel was pretty cool.

Many buildings and unique one way entrances and exits with stoplights to the fort proper as it was when it was built. This with Fort Wool across the channel protected the entrance to the bay system during the civil and second world war. Full day can be spent here.
