Unfortunately, we didn't even have a chance to visit our Grandmother's grave because 3 suspicious cars were speeding through when we arrived. 2 of the cars circled back and got behind us. We came to a fork in the road and I could see the 3rd car waiting up the hill to the right, so I made a left and exited the Cemetery. The thugs in the cars behind us could be seen hand gesturing to the car ahead after we made that left turn, a turn that potentially saved our lives. This area of St. Louis is drug-infested and crime-ridden. Please be alert and safe if you visit. Call the Cemetery and find out best/safest times to visit.

My father just passed away and I called Calvary Cemetery to find out about getting a plaque placed next to his parents, who are memorialized there on, or near, the grave of my great grandfather. The person I spoke with told me that I had to prove I was a direct descendant of the person who held the account for the family plot. He gave me her name, but I have never heard of her before. I mentioned that if my great grandfather and both my grand parents are either buried or memorialized there, how could I not be a direct descendant of the person whom he claimed held the family plots? Well, It turns out she is my great, great grandmother. So, I need to contact her to get permission. Does anyone know of a good app to communicate with those existing in the great beyond? As I've been taking care of the odds and ends of my father's passing, I've been greeting with nothing but empathy from people at organizations I've contacted β€” with this one exception. I suppose the man who I talked with could have been having a bad day β€” although, I don't see how it can be worse than the past few days I've had. My advice to people who run Calvary Cemetery is to at least act like you care. It seems like that's your business. And the guy who I spoke to was very, very bad at his job.

Historic cemetery with lots of statues and beautiful stones. I have family here so I like to visit a few times a year. The neighborhood is a little sketchy so just be aware of that, once you're inside the gates though I would say you're fine (I've never had a problem). They don't keep up with maintenance as well as they could (like Bellefontaine does) but it's still lovely and a great spot if you enjoy taking pictures - just be respectful.

Very sad. Found out my grandmother had a mausoleum there, great, no not great at all. One of the bronze doors had been pried off and stolen. Not the first one, probably the sixteenth different one, along with the huge cooper pipe for the air conditioned cremation room. I was told I had to pay to fix the mausoleum. My grandmother also had bought lots of lots around her so our family would be buried there, none of us have been,,,,, but we can’t sell the lots she bought only donate them to the cemetery. I was promised that security cameras would go up, 3 years later nothing. Funny how Bellafont cemetery has had no problems, oh yeah, they have security. Only the tip of the problems I had with the cemetery. Very sad since my grandmother also paid for eternal care.

Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum is an amazing place to take a walk and learn some history, especially if you pair it with Bellefontaine Cemetery next door. There are quite a few famous names like Dred Scott, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Tennessee Williams and standing next to their graves is incredibly powerful. I recommend pulling up their Wikipedia pages and reading them aloud while next to their graves.

Calvary Cemetery is in the very top for cemeteries in St Louis and the 2nd oldest in the Archdiocse. Its beauty surrounds you the minute you drive through the gate. There are some of the most unique and spectacular monuments you'll want to see. Bring your walking shoes because it's huge, over 400 acres. There are also several well known families buried here. Beautiful in all seasons to visit.

The Cemetery has great history & many absolutely lovely sculpted headstones. HOWEVER, the neighborhood surrounding the cemetery is terrible and a high-crime area. It is best to go in a group or also carry your own protection buddies of Smith & Weston with tou!! The Disose also MUST start doing a better job at grounds upkeep and security to prevent theft and vandalism.

This cemetery has ornate metal signs posted everywhere, overhanging the curb. If you pull over to let another car pass, as I did, you can very easily end up with a deep scrape on your car, as I did. Totally unnecessary and should be replaced with round signs slightly set back from the road, like Bellefontaine. A 5 minute visit to the Garden of Innocents costs me $500+ in auto body repair.

πŸ‘πŸ‘ The only regret I had was not being able to read the stories on every gravestone in the Bellefontaine Cemetery. The cemetery is very well maintained and the most beautiful cemetery I've ever been! I can't wait to come visit again.
