A beautiful place for a day trip from NYC. It’s in the upstate NY and good for a summer barbecue or fun in the pool. There are also a zoo and trails for hiking. A lot of trees and mountains for the peace of mind and natural serene. There is a gift shop that sells unique collections and a hotel to stay in the night. There is also a restaurant and a few vending machines to buy snacks from. However, it’s better to buy foods from outside as the prices are a bit high. Don’t forget proper dresses for the pool. The drive to the place was also enjoyable because of the zigzag road surrounded by plethora of trees.

Great place for a family. Phenomenal place to enjoy the outdoors. The park is well maintained with lots to see and do. The park keeps open the restrooms and they are very clean. Be sure to check out the river dock and the zoo as they are worth the extra steps. Aug 28 2023. Partially open. Great job to all the widowhood made it happen. Thanks Winter walk

This is a beautiful spot. It has hiking, a boat rental spot, a zoo, and a pool. You do pay $10 to go in but it's worth it. You get a lot for 10 bucks. Payment is separate for the boat rentals though. It's a big park so for the most part you can find a spot for you and you're family to do some BBQ. If you don't complete the hike or choose not to do it, you can still see the view by driving your car up the road.

We did the AllTrails version - 3.8 mile loop trail. The 1,154 ft elevation made a huge difference for us flat land Long Islanders. Took us about 4.5 hours to finish. Beautiful trails, a treat for photographers. Well maintained and clean. Appreciated the water vending machine at the Tower as by then we had finished all the water we started with.

Visiting Bear Mountain State Park in the fall is an enchanting experience that captures the essence of autumn's beauty. The moment you step into the park, you are greeted by a vibrant tapestry of red, orange, and gold leaves adorning the trees, creating a picturesque landscape that seems to be straight out of a painting. The crisp, cool air carries the scent of pine and leaves crunch beneath your feet as you explore the park's trails. The panoramic views from the summit are absolutely breathtaking, with the foliage below creating a mesmerizing mosaic of colors. Hiking enthusiasts will find the trails well-marked and diverse, catering to various skill levels. One of the highlights of Bear Mountain State Park in the fall is its wildlife. It's not uncommon to spot squirrels scurrying about, preparing for winter, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of a majestic bald eagle soaring overhead. The park's lake mirrors the surrounding foliage, doubling the visual delight. Additionally, the park offers excellent picnic spots. Imagine enjoying a warm cup of cider and sandwiches amidst nature’s vibrant canvas; it's an experience that lingers in your memory long after you've left. For those interested in history, a visit to the Bear Mountain Inn provides insight into the region's past. The rustic charm of the inn coupled with the backdrop of fall foliage makes for a delightful excursion. In conclusion, Bear Mountain State Park in the fall is a true gem. Its natural beauty, coupled with recreational activities and historical attractions, offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Whether you're an avid hiker, a nature enthusiast, or simply seeking tranquility amidst breathtaking scenery, this park delivers an unforgettable autumn experience.

Awesome state park & shines even more brightly during autumn. You can see the best NY foliage during late October. This place became a popular and frequent stopover to and from the Woodbury Premium Outlet, which is only 15 minutes away.

It’s a nice hike up with nice view. The lake is also beautiful with row boats when weather permits. And this park is very big too to just walk around for those who prefers or are unable to hike up.

My second trip to this fascinating place. Good family spot: lots of facilities for barbeque, spacious parking, pond with boat renting. And, of course, the mountain! You can choose trail difficulty according to your fitness level or simply drive right to the top!!! As an alternative (that’s the way I did it, though I strictly do not recommend this) you can go to the top using natural rocks instead of trails - will be some kind of a crazy hybrid of rock climbing and hiking. Trails are well-maintained and really pretty with all the swirly steps made of stone (see photos). You can see some butterflies and other insects, some birds maybe - fauna is not very luscious. But what truly deserves your attention are scenic views - these are magnificent. A pity that photo can never convey what you feel standing on the top of the mountain and staring down on tiny bridges and 200-meter barges that look children’s toys… And finally bear mountain Inn looked very impressive but was closed that day - I got only some sneak-peak throw-the-window photos for you.

What a great escape from the busy city life! Just a quick drive away and you can find yourself feeling like you're thousands of miles away. Tons of trails, ranging from easy to hard, short to long. Great for families or solo adventurists. All seasons activities are scheduled so check their website to see what's going on. Trails are well maintained and clean, you won't see piles of trash around the park.

Although the Hessen Lake and the views from Bear Mountain are beautiful, the park and the trails are overcrowded. You can’t find serenity walking there. Only crowds and numerous of stairs killing your knees.

Beautiful State Park. It was open when we were there (Oct 2nd). Lots of space for walking, events, kids play area, and the hotel was open with a snack shop, gift shop and restrooms for use. The trail area was closed.

Nice park with lots of picnic tables but no grills. Bring your own grill. Trails are moderately challenging but with good views throughout. Can also drive to the top if Bear mountain and soak in a great view. On a clear day you can see Manhattan.

Awesome piece of nature. It was a hiking experience to remember. So many great shots at the apex. You can get a real sense of what matters when you embrace something as simple and as free as this. It is often stated that beauty is in the eye of the beholder…well mother nature’s opinion of beauty must supersede our own!

Beautiful state park, lots of different trails, walk ways and picturesque views, both easy and difficult. There is Bear Mountain Inn where you can spend the night and a restaurant on the property. Definitely lots of walking and hiking uphill so pack a sandwich and drinks and you will be good to go.

We have been visiting since 1976. We stayed at Overlook lodge. My husband David, daughter Alexis and myself! The rooms were spacious, very clean and the beds were very comfortable. Overlook lodge has a spacious lounge with rustic furniture, and a small deck, with spectacular views looking across Hessian lake and the Hudson River Valley. Highly recommend for a family trip.

Beautiful views. If you are not for a hike you can always bring food and have a Barbacue by the lake. Some trails are not very well defined and are high Difficult so make sure to choose the trail that suits you.

Beautiful spot! There looks to be two main ways up the mountain. We took the more vigorous way up. You definitely need some conditioning to make it up that way. The other side is mostly stairs. Paths are clearly marked and the views were gorgeous!

The famous Bear Mountain is so famous that it is always crowded. We went on a Friday morning and yet the parking lot was already full. We can understand as it is so beautiful up there, and it is the peak fall foliage, cars just arrived non-stop, both at the foot or on top of the mountain.

Very beautiful zoo that houses Local animals from around the Northeastern region of USA, with a very picturesque view of the Hudson River and the Historic Bear Mt. Bridge. Good hiking trails going up to the top with majestic view of the Hudson Valley. Beautiful during Autumn, jam packed with tourists, traffic jams and long lines but the view is worth it. Enjoy 🤙

We ended up hiking the bear mountain loop trail. Trail will take about 2-2.5 hours. It is best to do this hike counter clockwise. Start of the trail will be strenuous (climbing rocks) which will eventually lead you to the Perkins Memorial Tower. Here we rested & had a quick luck before heading down to the parking lot. The park is filled with so many families & small events. Enjoy your time & be patient with others around you.

The hiking areas are incredible. But the parks and picnic areas area a bit of a mess. It's crowded on the weekends and a lot of garbage. I'd only come here to hike. There are plenty of seating areas to grill so that's an option but I'd get here early.

This well kept state park is a gem close to NYC. The trails are well marked out and the park offers many ammenities like pool, barbecue spaces, huge lawns, good parking, visitor center, an inn, and friendly staff. When we went last, it was spring, we did the Bear Mountain Loop Trail. Well worth it, if you start to the east of the mountain. The lake near the parks HQ is also lovely. Parking is paid and visitors do not pay. The park is dog friendly.

Perfect weather; good season starter hike. Definitely recommend counterclockwise; stairs first then down to lake. Stunning views at the top. It was so clear, that far NYC skyline was visible. Small patches have bugs and mosquitoes, little muddy and heavy rock scramble downside.

This is a great place for hiking. And it's only 1 hour from New York City. Bear Mountain State Park opens every day at 8:00 am. You only pay $10 for parking. There are 4 trails and they are not difficult. Here you can also walk around Hessian Lake or rent pedal boards. If you walk the trails to the top of the park, you can see the Purple Hear Memorial Bridge, the Hudson River Valley, the Perkins Memorial Tower. Also in this park there is a zoo, a swimming pool, a carousel, a playground and a picnic area. In general, this is a popular place, so there are a lot of people here.

Awesome place for one day teip to just disconnect and be with nature. They also have logging if you want to stay for more then one day. The spot is clean and parking is good too. Great place for hiking and picnic. They have seperate places for grilling and for playing, nice lawn if you just want to relax in the sun. I liked that. They have boating and swimming pool. Pool entrance is $5 per person. I like the smal cafe area they have in case u did not bring food you will find food there. They also have mary go around for the kids it by the reast rooms. The rest room were no good but i understand so many people come there. They should make new rest rooms as there is only one restoom with 10 stalls. It gets crowded. That is the reason i gave 4 stars.

Beautiful place. Opened the day we visited for the first time after devastating storm. Would love to visit again. Loved the roundabout and environs. Great that it was under cover and can just imagine how warm it would be in winter with that great fireplace going.

I have been to Bear Mountain State Park since I was a child, & always loved it. It's absolutely beautiful there! I went with my Mother, Father, Brother, & one of my Niece's in 2018 for my 27 year old birthday. That's exactly where I wanted to go, & enjoy the outside. Had a wonderful time, & happy that my Niece got to see Bear Mountain State Park for her first time. It's always been very well taken care of. The State Park Police are always making sure it's safe as well. Forest Rangers are a plus to. It's A Wonderful State Park. 🙂

It’s closest mountain to NYC and probably it’s the only plus. I was there off season, half of the parking was empty, but place was full of people. Can’t imagine how crowded it is in summertime. There is just few points with nice view. Pretty hard hikes (one hike is just never ending steps and another one is very steep road), not for everyone. Pretty dirty restrooms. Very loud. Even if you will find not crowded place, you will still hear the crowd. In mu opinion you can find a better hikes upstate NY. Yes, I’ll be a longer drive, but you will get more positive feelings.

Our first time going there and we absolutely loved it. Great place to go hiking. One thing I didn't like is that it's overcrowded at the picnic area and people throwing garbage at random places not cool.

Amazing place with lake, walking around Lake, boating, huge camping barbecue place with huge parking. An excellent 2 hours one way mountain hiking, it take 1 hour climb down. 10$ car parking is the only fee, advised to take your own food as food cart is not visible anywhere.

Beautiful state park that is about 40 mins away from the hustle and bustle of NYC. A 25 min walk from the parking lot will take you to the beautiful bridge that offers great view. I’m definitely going back to see fall colors from this bridge. The drive to this state park is beautiful, they also have couple of restrooms, ice rink, a lake and a huge covered area with picnic tables. Definitely recommend

This is a great park for a day trip out of the city. You can go on the paddle boat for 50 dollars an our or 30 dollars for half an hour for two people. They are tiring but you have to do it at least once. The park is spacious, food is a little pricey and limited so I would bring something packed or cook in the park. I would recommend maybe eating in the evening in many of the local towns like Beacon.

Great place to walk around. I took my kids, and we drove up the mountain to see all the incredible views as the trails were close. Saved us time and energy to drive back down to the lake and to walk around the small zoo, where we saw a few animals and bears. It was a fun family trip. I will most definitely came back during the summer.

Hazardous boat dock for Circle Line Cruise boat. Tide came in while we were hiking. The already flooded walk area covered in water. We had to walk on a wall. When we returned to the boat, half the wall was covered in water. To get on & off the wall, we had to walk thru water almost to our knees. There was 1 blind guy & several senior citizens with canes. Circle Line makes this trip several times a day, several days of the week. They know this happens, as does Bear Mountain Park. It is hard to believe they put people in this much danger. There was a lot of fear. We were not warned.

Bear mountain park is a fantastic place to spend the time with plenty of trails and lookouts. Only an hour away from NYC but it can get pretty busy on the weekends because of that. I did the Popolopen Torne Loop and i highly recommend it, the are couple strenuous parts but with some rest anyone can do it.

  • 2/5 Nora W. 2 years ago on Google
Nice park however I have been to better parks along the Palisades. I don't like crowded parks where everything goes.

  • 5/5 Cindy B. 2 years ago on Google
Nature at its best! Took a walk around the the lake, enjoyed the scenery and fresh crisp air. This place it pretty clean, as it should because there's quite a few trash cans made available. Lots of picnic tables and nice lawn to just relax and enjoy nature.
