Dhakuria Lake is a self-sustained part of the large, prominent Rabindra Sarobar Lake located in South Kolkata. It is actually a lake created artificially from a patch of marshy wetlands located to the south of the borders of the original British Calcutta. This lake was excavated with an aim to develop a recreational and residential landscape around it, and also to use the soil as landfill to level up the lowlands of South Kolkata such as Dhakuria, which later emerged to be one of the developed and progressing landmarks of the city. The lake was renamed in 1958 after Rabindranath Tagore, the late Nobel laureate. Today, the lake hosts a variety of of flora and fauna, as well as the base of various rowing clubs in this part of the city. The lake is surrounded by a vast recreational park that is a popular place for many Calcuttans, to have morning or evening strolls.
